NBA Handicapping: Indiana Pacers somehow back in lead of Eastern Conference

04.10.2014     08:08 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Just when looked like Indiana was waving the white flag (i.e. sitting starters) in its quest for the Eastern Conference's top seed, they went ahead and beat Milwaukee 104-102 and regained the East lead by a half game over the Miami Heat who have lost three of four. The two teams meet in South Beach on Friday.

We have to point out that while the results (-1 closing number) say the Pacers covered vs. the Bucks, keep in mind that game opened -3.5, went to -5, dropped to -2 and only an hour before game time did the line drop to -1.5/-1. In their last 23 games, the Pacers really have only one legitimate pointspread cover (91-79 as 6.5-point favorites vs. Chicago). The other two were last night’s miraculous victory and an OT win as 5-point chalk vs. Detroit.

“We accomplished the purpose,” said George, who spent the game in warm-ups after getting in some conditioning and shooting. “We felt very comfortable with the group we had, that they were going to go out there and get us a win. It wasn’t like we were sacrificing the game.

NBA Gambling Alert: Indiana Pacers sit starters vs. Milwaukee

Indiana -2 at Milwaukee O/U 183

Always an adventure betting late regular season NBA. The Indiana Pacers opened -3.5 for tonight's game at Milwaukee. Earlier today they were bet up to -5. Then news broke that head coach Frank Vogel was going to sit his starters. They'll instead go with Donald Sloan, Evan Turner, Rasual Butler, Ian Mahinmi, and Luis Scola. That drove the line from -5 to -2.

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Detroit Pistons at Cleveland Cavaliers

Detroit +6.5 at Cleveland O/U 207
Recommendation: Detroit

I used the Cavs +6.5 as a free play when they travelled to Detroit less than two weeks ago and emerged with a one point SU victory.  In the rematch tonight, once again this pointspread is out of whack with current realities, but this time it’s Detroit offering legitimate value for their supporters.

The Cavs suffered brutal back-to-back losses last weekend; blown out by a Hawks team that they were chasing for the final playoff spot in the East, then knocked off at home in OT by the Bobcats.  While the Cavs remain technically alive for that last berth, they’ll need to win every game while the Hawks and Knicks lose every game; an extremely unlikely proposition.  For a squad with major chemistry issues that haven’t dissipated as the season has progressed, it’s hard to picture a circle-the-wagons level of effort this evening.

Here's a quick breakdown of teams that have yet to officially clinch a playoff berth.

Atlanta (34-43) - Currently the 8th seed in the Eastern Conference. Following last night's loss to Detroit, the Hawks' led over the New York Knicks is 1.5 games. Atlanta plays host to Boston tonight.

New York (33-45) - After winning four of five, lost back-to-back games to Washington and Miami. Don't play until Friday. Close with Toronto twice, Chicago, and Brooklyn.

Golden State (48-29) - Currently the 6th seed in the Western Conference but yet to officially clinch. One game lead over seventh seed Dallas. Favorable schedule down the stretch: vs. Denver, at LA Lakers, at Portland, vs. Minnesota, at Denver.

Dallas (48-31) - One game behind Golden State, one game ahead of Phoenix. Winners of four straight road games. Close the season vs. San Antonio, vs. Phoenix, and at Memphis.

NBA Handicapping: Does Indiana's late season slump lessen it postseason chances?

Interesting article on the Indiana Pacers and whether or not "peaking" impacts a team's ability to make a postseason run.

The Pacers are minus-5.6 in their last 20 games in point differential, which has consistently proven to be a good predictor of postseason success. Only one team in the past ten years has even made the playoffs with a point differential of minus-5 or worse in their final 20 games: the 2011 Atlanta Hawks who finished 7-13 in their last 20 with a minus-5.9 point differential.

Betting on the WWE is apparently a thing

04.08.2014     07:58 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Why beat yourself up trying to tackle March college hoops or the last week of the NBA regular season when the value clearly lies in the WWE betting markets? According to Bovada, it got drilled when underdog Brock Lesnar "upset" the Undertaker in last weekend's WrestleMania. Not that we condone cheating but for the intern who happened to overhear the details during "dress rehearsal", that seems like an easy way to pick up a few extra bucks, no?

NBA Gambling Update: Another Golden State assistant fired

04.07.2014     01:40 PM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Where there is smoke, there is fire? Another Golden State Warriors assistant was let go – this time due to what is being called "a violation of company policy." The off-court issues haven't (yet) impacted the team's results with the Warriors playing solid of late and headed to the postseason. But two assistants in two weeks and plenty of talk about head coach Mark Jackson's future aren't exactly positives.

"Believe it or not," Jackson said, "I am absolutely convinced that my future is just fine."

"There's no friction at all," Jackson said. "I humbly submit to you, if you've got a problem with me as a person, then it's your problem. I'm low maintenance. What you see is what you get, and I'm going to be a fun-loving enjoyable guy that's easy to talk to. I have no issues with anybody in this organization and it's been that way from

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: The Indiana Pacers' historic ATS slide

04.07.2014     08:02 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Indiana Pacers have been a remarkable pointspread story this year, worthy of a Wiseguy Report to examine in detail what has happened and why.  To be thorough, this story starts last year when the Pacers flexed their collective muscles, developing into a title contender for the first time in a decade.

Indiana was good, not great, in the 2012-13 regular season.  They won 49 games, tied for the third best record in the (much) weaker of the two conferences.  Here’s an excerpt of what I wrote about the Pacers heading into the playoffs last year:

“A month ago, I would have listed the Pacers as Miami’s toughest Eastern Conference potential test.  Indiana’s defensive numbers rank among the best in the NBA, and low post behemoth Roy Hibbert is a very tough matchup for the Heat in the paint.  Indiana beat Miami twice during the regular season, and the Pacers were the last team to give the Heat real trouble in the playoffs last year, taking a 2-1 series lead in the Eastern Conference semi’s before the Heat closed out the series with three straight wins.

But the Pacers have not Read more
