NBA Gambling News: Brooklyn's mess of a season continues

12.04.2013     07:46 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Another no-show for the Brooklyn Nets last night as they were smoked on their home court by Denver, 111-87. Now reports are out the head coach Jason Kidd and assistant Lawrence Frank apparently weren't on the same page and Frank will now have a reduced role with the team. Looking ahead, Brooklyn's schedule is favorable (tough to say for a 5-13 team) with games against New York, Milwaukee, Boston, Detroit, Washington, and Philadelphia (twice).

"This is the decision that I had to make, and we made it and we move on," Kidd told reporters before the Nets were routed 111-87 at home by the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday night. "This is my decision in the sense of what I had to do. It's about basketball. That's it."

"[We're] soul-searching here," Kevin Garnett said after the loss. "We were trying to figure out how to patch this thing up, how to get this thing together; there's a lot of moving parts to this. ... I don't think anyone around here is having fun, and losing is definitely not

NBA Handicapping: 76ers continue to play fast despite glaring deficiencies

12.03.2013     12:36 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
If you're looking for a blueprint of how to trend over the total in the NBA, read this. The Philadelphia 76ers are 13-5 O/U, play at the fastest pace in the league (102.8), and rank 26th in defensive efficiency (104.4).

"When you choose to play at a pace that we're trying to play at, the problems can really start there," Brown said following practice yesterday at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. "We turn it over a lot, and they run at us. We take quick, bad shots and they run at us. A lot of our transition defensive problems are coming from turnovers and quick, bad shots, because we're so adamant on playing at a speed. Somewhere out there, down the road now, there needs to be a better understanding for how you responsibly play that style of play. Then, when you just get into basic halfcourt defense, it's a whole other story about accountability, define a team, all those things. And me doing a better job coaching some rotations. But our defense is most definitely a problem, and I think some of that spins

NBA Handicapping: Wizards close out tough November slate strong

12.02.2013     08:39 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Orlando at Washington -6.5 O/U 196.5

Nice way to close out November as the Washington Wizards played eight games in 12 nights and went 6-2 SU (5-3 ATS). For the month, the Wiz played 10 of 17 games on the highway and were also involved in four overtime contests. December looks a much more manageable with only 11 games and one back-to-back situation. And over the next 11 days, Washington plays only three games, all of which at home.

NBA Handicapping: Western Conference vs. Eastern Conference

11.29.2013     07:55 AM     Otto Sports     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Western Conference is certainly the deeper side this year by a wide margin and it's showing up in the betting numbers. Home favorites have been predictably hit or miss due to what I think is a bit of a  heavy tax. However, when you get a Western team as a dog against the Eastern foe and you've got a money maker.

Western home dogs vs. Eastern: 5-1 SU/ATS
Western road dogs vs. Eastern: 6-11 SU but 10-7 ATS (assuming you got +5.5 on Lakers at Washington the other day)

There's also a great subset with Western teams laying points against the Eastern conference foe away from home. The average line in those games is about -4.5 while they are averaging a nearly 7 point per game winning margin.

Western road favorites vs. Eastern: 11-4 SU/ATS

Couple of teams qualify for these subsets on Black Friday:

San Antonio -8.5 at Orlando
LA Lakers +5.5 at Detroit

One more will likely qualify once it opens:

New Orleans at Philly

One would have qualified but the line has moved:

Dallas was +1 at Atlanta and is now favored at -1

NBA Handicapping: 76ers are the league's best OVER bet

11.27.2013     07:06 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Philadelphia 76ers have been the strongest "over" team in the NBA thus far at 11-4 O/U thanks to a quick pace, better than expected offensive efficiency, worse than expected defensive efficiency, and little to no bench. It’s not a profile first-year head coach Brett Brown is fond of with the team already making various roster moves as Brown seeks to build towards the future. Philly travels to Orlando tonight with a total of 208.5.

"That won't change," Hinkie said. "It doesn't mean there will be lots of changes. It just means our job is to keep looking. Keep looking all the time. Keep looking internally and keep looking externally.

"Keep comparing all the time, who can help move us forward."

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Phoenix Suns at Miami Heat

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Phoenix +12 at Miami O/U 201
Recommendation: Phoenix

Phoenix has been the single best pointspread team in the NBA this year; suffering only two ATS losses in their first 13 games. The Suns were widely expected to tank this season; priced as a true bottom feeder. But that simply hasn’t been the case – they’re tied for the #8 seed in the West with Memphis right now.

Suns forward Channing Frye summed it up: “We're just having fun out there….When you start losing everything you start to get real tight, so we can't be like that. We just have to get out there and have fun."

The Suns opened this road trip with a pair of SU wins on the highway.  They’ve also won SU at New Orleans, and lost at Portland by a single point; a team I have no hesitation supporting in this ‘road dog’ role.  Phoenix is happy, confident and still undervalued going into Miami tonight.

When the Heat bring their a-game, they can beat a team like Phoenix by margin.  But Miami isn’t playing to win games against second tier foes in November – they’re playing for a fourth Read more

NBA Handicapping: Estimated Market Power Ratings 11/21/2013

11.21.2013     12:22 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Submitted by Stat Intelligence

Haven’t had a chance to update these in awhile. And, the market is struggling to figure out exactly what’s going on for the disappointments in New York and Brooklyn, and the pleasant surprise in Phoenix. So…trying to do these is kind of like chasing something that’s chasing something else. Let’s give it a shot.

Same format as in the NFL. Home court advantage counts for three points. You should usually allot an extra point against a team with a back-to-back disadvantage in a game. Injuries to star players count at least 1 points most of the time too.

Estimated NBA Market Power Ratings

85: Miami

84: LA Clippers, Oklahoma City, San Antonio, Golden State with Curry, Indiana

83: Minnesota, Golden State without Curry

82: Houston

81: Dallas, Memphis

80: Portland, Chicago

79: New Orleans, Toronto

78: Brooklyn, Atlanta

77: Detroit

76: New York Read more
