Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: An early look at the Field of 68

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We’ve got brackets to break down! I’ll offer a quick take on the 28 matchups already set for Thursday and Friday. Games are listed in rotation order.

The A-10 got a handful of mediocre teams like Dayton into the NCAA Tournament mix, but the Flyers will certainly be looking forward to a matchup against an Ohio State team that has repeatedly avoided them in non-conference play. The Buckeyes enter the tourney on an 0-6 ATS run; just 4-11 ATS in their last 15 tries as chalk.

Syracuse, too, was a pointspread disaster area down the stretch, cashing only one winning bet in their last eight ballgames. But Western Michigan’s only win against an NCAA Tournament team came on the opening night of the season, back on November 8th, when they beat New Mexico State.

Phil Martelli’s Saint Joseph’s team hasn’t won an NCAA Tournament game since 2004, when Jameer Nelson and Delonte West were his starting guards. UConn is a Top 10 team for free throw shooting percentage; always key in this ‘short favorite’ pointspread Read more

NBA Handicapping: Portland Trail Blazers hold players-only meeting

03.14.2014     06:23 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Losers of four straight, the Portland Trail Blazers held a players-only meeting following Wednesday's loss at San Antonio. After a day off, Portland plays at New Orleans this evening. There is currently no line on the game. LaMarcus Aldridge is expected to miss tonight and Sunday's game vs. Golden State with a lower back contusion.

“I just felt like it was something that needed to be said,” Lillard responded when ask why he initiated the dialogue. “At some point, it’s up to the players.”

“It’s time for a players-meeting when we see a little slippage,” Wright said. “Every team has two or three a year. I love the fact that this was the only one this season where guys really had to step up and be vocal leaders.

NBA Handicapping: The Detroit Pistons probably don't even want to make the playoffs

03.11.2014     08:53 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It is high comedy watching these awful Eastern Conference teams lose on a nightly basis and yet technically remain in the "playoff hunt." The Detroit Pistons, losers of 10 of their last 12, are one of those squads. Following Sunday's 118-111 loss at Boston, it is abundantly clear that the only way the Pistons – or the Knicks for that matter – get into the postseason is by accident.

Defense is poor, transition defense especially so.  The Pistons are the worst free-throw-shooting team in the NBA, the second-worst 3-point-shooting team, and allow the fourth-most points, 103.8 per game.

"I think it's trust, guys trusting each other, guys willing to sacrifice for one another," he said.  "I think that's the main thing, trust and sacrifice."

"He was preaching every night, like, if we want to be great, we've got to hold each other accountable, if he ain't doing this, he ain't doing that, take him out," Jennings said of Billups.  "That's what he was mostly

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Brooklyn Nets at Boston Celtics

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Brooklyn -4 at Boston O/U 197.5
Recommendation: Brooklyn

The Nets have officially turned the corner, as they’re playing closer to the potential of their bloated payroll.  They’ve won four straight games, including two impressive performances against the Grizzlies and Bulls earlier this week.  In fact, they manhandled two of the toughest teams in basketball as they make a push towards the Eastern Conference playoffs.  The Nets are currently the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference, which is really the goal, in order to avoid the Heat and Pacers early in the playoffs.  Meanwhile, the 20-41 Celtics are officially going through the motions.  They’ve dropped 7 of their last 8 games, including a troubling blowout loss to the Warriors in their last contest.  The Celtics are an undersized team right now with little resistance at the rim.  Well, that’s the exact kind of team this Nets tend to thrive against with their size across the Read more

NBA Handicapping: Crucial five-game swing for Dallas Mavericks

03.07.2014     08:12 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Portland at Dallas -2.5 O/U 215.5

We've mentioned a couple of times that Dallas' post-All-Star break schedule was tough and thus far they haven't exactly responded well having dropped three straight. The Mavs' next five games could very well define their season: vs. Portland, vs. Indiana, at Golden State, at Utah, and at Oklahoma City. Dallas is currently the eighth seed in the Western Conference; a half game behind Phoenix and a game ahead of Memphis.

“I know we’re tougher than what we showed,” he said of their 115-110 loss at Denver on Wednesday. “And, yeah, this is the first time we’ve dropped three in a row all year, so it’s a time of great urgency.

“And we’ve got to step up, and we’ve got to respond. This is good. We need it. We need to
