MLB Betting News: Halladay not in top form this season

05.04.2012     07:42 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
When a top-tier starter is off of his game, bettors have to be ready to pounce. Practically everyone has been aware of Tim Lincecum's struggles and those who have played against him have been rewarded. Another big name pitcher that may not be right is Philadelphia's Roy Halladay. On Wednesday, Halladay had one of the worst outings of his career, allowing eight earned runs and 12 hits against Atlanta. Following the outing, Halladay took a non-baseball related leave of absence from the team and is scheduled to return today. His next start is slated for Monday. Prior to the outing vs. Atlanta, Halladay's ERA of 1.95 made it seems as if nothing was wrong. But his strikeout numbers are down and his walks are up. There may not being anything wrong with the soon-to-be 35-year-old but he is certainly worth keeping an eye on.

“I was good, honestly,” Halladay said after the game. “I wish I had a better reason, but I don’t. It was just a lack of execution on pitches in key Read more

Betting odds on who will win the 2012 NBA Lottery

05.02.2012     12:42 PM     Printer Friendly
The NBA Lottery will be selected May 30 followed by the actual draft on June 28. The lottery is weighted, giving more "chances" for the weaker teams to earn a higher draft spot. But despite the favorable odds, teams with the worst record have won the lottery only three times since 1990 – Orlando was the last team in 2004. If you like betting on events like these, The Greek posted odds on who will win the lottery. We broke down the moneyline, the odds percentage of the moneyline and actual percentage based on the NBA's sliding scale. Since Orlando's "win" in 2004, the following worst records have won the lottery: 6th-worst, 5th, 6th, 9th, 2nd, 5th and 8th.

MLB Handicapping: Verlander's workload remains a non-issue

05.02.2012     11:37 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article from Sports Illustrated on the amazingness of Justin Verlander. The innings continue to accumulate as do the high pitch counts but it doesn't seem to matter. It has been documented countless times that few if any work as hard not only during the offseason but in between starts which is where a lot of guys fail late in the season. Perhaps Verlander's biggest strength is his ability to pace himself throughout a game. The first few innings you'll commonly see his "batting practice" fastball (low 90s) rather than the 99 he hits in the 8th. Bettors won't get rich supporting Verlander and his big price tags but it’s a much better option than betting against him – he's working on a fourth straight profitable season.

"Research has shown that fatigue is a critical signal to stop pitching," Fleisig said. "If a pitcher is pitching as hard or harder at the end of the game and if he does not alter his mechanics and doesn't feel fatigued, then I don't think he's at any increased risk of injury. But Read more

Deadspin tries to uncover truth behind bettor/columnist Sarah Phillips

05.01.2012     02:37 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We don't even know where to begin with this one but kudos to Deadspin for trying to tackle it. Some of you have probably heard of Sarah Phillips, a young 20-something female hardcore sports bettor (because there are a ton of them out there these days) who went from Covers.com posting forum member, to featured columnist, to snagging a gig with ESPN's Page 2 within the span of about a year. If you bet on a daily basis and read her stuff, it is obviously scripted in some manner. She'll go from sounding like a college chick who likes flavored vodka to an Andrew Lange-Brent Crow Sportsmemo Podcast conversation about a mid-week Sun Belt college basketball total – no one is THAT talented. Anyway, Phillips' online presence started to draw the attention of some folks and well, we'll let you soak in the rest...

A few days later, Phillips asked Matt for his advice on a Cardinals-Brewers game. The over/under for the game was 7.5 runs. Matt told her to take the Read more

MLB Handicapping: Pittsburgh's Morton shows improvement vs. lefties

05.01.2012     07:14 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Pittsburgh (Morton) at St. Louis (Wainwright) -180 O/U 7

The book on Pittsburgh's Charlie Morton has always been that he can't get lefties out. Last season, they hit .364 BA/.806 OPS against the righty. The year before that; .329 BA/.840 OPS. This year, though the sample is small (48 batters faced), Morton has dramatically improved his numbers (.227 BA/.582 OPS). According to this article, Morton made some pitch selection adjustments that have helped. Also note Morton's solid groundball-to-fly ball ratio (39-10). Expect tonight's opponent St. Louis to have at least five lefties in the lineup.

"He's starting to do all of it a little better," Hurdle said. "Even though it's a small sample size, we're looking for improvement. He's looking for improvement. He's gotten some."

"To me, it's kind of like Read more

NBA Gambling: Los Angeles Clippers were at one point +22.5 live wagering

04.30.2012     06:02 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Down by as much as 27 points in the third quarter, the Los Angeles Clippers rallied back to beat the Memphis Grizzlies last night. Things were so out of hand that Pinnacle, known for offering live wagering on virtually every televised event, stopped posting a moneyline during timeouts. According to Sports Options' line history archive, the highest moneyline offered on the Clippers was +1026 (+14.5 was the pointspread at that exact time). LA's pointspread progressions was +22.5, +15, +11, +4, pk (+185), and pk (-180).

“At the end of the third quarter Coach took me out and I went nuts,” Paul said. “I said, 'Coach give us a chance! Give us a chance!' He puts us back in there and [Eric] Bledsoe got going, Nick Young was amazing and Reggie Evans gets the game ball, he was unreal.”

NBA Playoff Free Betting Pick: Utah Jazz at San Antonio Spurs

Recommendation: First Half Under 102

Sunday’s NBA Playoffs tips-off with an interesting noon start time between Utah and San Antonio. Of course this will also equal an 11 am tip for the Mountain Time Zone based Jazz.  I expect both teams to slowly get accustom to playoff basketball, while a very sloppy first half could be on the docket.  The Spurs were downright explosive offensively throughout much of the campaign, while all eight of their games went OVER the total to close the season.  However, it’s important to remember this is now a completely different season and the Spurs understand they’ll need to step it up defensively in the postseason.  Keep in mind, over the Spurs’ last eight games they only played just one playoff team.  In addition, the Spurs trended UNDER the total on their home floor in the first half this season with 13 OVERS and 20 UNDERS.  Meanwhile, the Jazz will focus on pounding the ball down low, while slowing the tempo in this series.  The Spurs can be thin along Read more

NBA Gambling: Spurs remember last year's injury to Ginobli

04.25.2012     11:31 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
San Antonio at Phoenix -2.5 O/U 205.5

Last season, with the top seed in the Western Conference locked up, San Antonio's Manu Ginobli got hurt in what was essentially a meaningless regular season game and missed Game 1 of the playoffs. The Spurs lost that game to Memphis and the eighth seeded Grizzlies went on to win the series 4-2. Similar situation tonight against Phoenix with little to nothing to play – except the top record in the league and home court throughout the playoffs. According to Sports Options, is looks as if Popovich won't risk another snafu with Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobli and Tony Parker all listed as "doubtful" due to rest. The Suns meanwhile are unlikely to put much emphasis on this game after being officially eliminated from the postseason following last night's loss at Utah.
