MLB Betting News: Detroit's Fister returns from DL to face Seattle

05.07.2012     07:16 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Detroit (Fister) -130 at Seattle (Beaven) O/U 7

A month ago to the day was the last time we saw Detroit's Doug Fister make a pitch. He'll make his return tonight in Seattle after a stint on the DL due to a side strain. Fister reportedly looked good during a recent rehab start but never top 90 mph with his fastball.

"There's been nothing like that," he said of a pitch-count plan. "We're going to take it -- have to dictate it by (how) the game's going and how I'm feeling and that's just kind of the way it always goes."

MLB Betting Notes: Houston Astros on fire after winning five straight

05.06.2012     06:51 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Don't look now but the Houston Astros have won five straight and are just a game under .500 at 13-14. Interesting that Houston's Pythagorean Win-Loss record is 16-11 – the second best mark in the National League. One key for the Astros has been the bullpen with owns the third-best ERA (2.85) in the NL. Leading the charge is veteran Brett Meyers and his 1.04 ERA and perfect 7-for-7 mark in saving opportunities. If the Astors where smart, they'd ship Meyers out ASAP while he's still a hot commodity.

"This team is hot right now," added Cardinals manager Mike Matheny. "They're swinging the bats well. They've got a lot of confidence when they walk up to the plate and it shows.."

"We're not really surprised," said Wight. "We just thought we could keep our heads down, keep Read more

MLB Gambling Notes: White Sox move Sale to bullpen, call up Axelrod

05.05.2012     08:05 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Chicago's Chris Sale, who showed a lot of (bet on) promise as a starter, is being placed back in bullpen because of what team officials are calling a "slightly tender elbow." The White Sox claim he is not hurt. The move likely eliminates any season-long workload issues and it also upgrades an at-times shaky bullpen. Dylan Axelrod will start in Sale's place Sunday against Detroit.

MLB Betting News: Cook makes Red Sox debut vs. Orioles

05.05.2012     07:49 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Baltimore (Hammel) at Boston (Cook) -115 O/U 9.5

With Josh Beckett's spot in the rotation being skipped, the Red Sox called up veteran Aaron Cook from Triple-A. Cook had a pedestrian 13 strikeouts and 11 walks in five starts for Pawtucket. He did however allow just one home run and posted a 1.89 ERA meaning his sinker was fairly effective.

“One thing I give Bob McClure a lot of credit for is teaching me how to pitch to contact and trusting that I can get guys out with groundballs,” said Cook. “Swings and misses, for me, are more of a timely thing – certain situations with guys on, less than two outs, less than one out, that’s the time I really try to go for the strikeouts. But other than that, I really try to make guys mis-hit the ball, hit pitches that I’m trying to make.

Free MLB Handicapping Pick: Toronto Blue Jays at Los Angeles Angels

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Toronto (Alvarez) +115 at LA Angels O/U 8
Recommendation: Toronto

Erwin Santana is in quite a rut these days.  The Angels are 0-5 in his five starts, picking up right where they left off last year when the Halos closed out the season losing each of Santana’s last four starts.  And it’s not like Santana is getting outdueled on a nightly basis.  His spent September struggling with his control, and he spent April getting lit up to the tune of a 6.16 ERA.  During LA’s 0-9 run with Santana on the hill, they’ve been favored seven times, dropping games to weaker foes like the Mariners, A’s and Royals.

While the Angels have been the single worst team in all of baseball from a ‘money earned or money lost’ perspective so far this season (down a whopping -12.4 units through their first 26 games), the Blue Jays have been consistent moneymakers for their supporters so far in 2012.  Toronto has proven their mettle on the Read more

MLB Betting Trends with Low Totals

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We cashed our top-rated 20* Big Drive over/under Game of the Month yesterday and provided our thoughts and written analysis of the Cardinals/Pirates over the total winner. While I noted the strong current hitting of the Cardinals and pitching performances and match-ups, my research and noted totals trends below may have you searching out more UNDER the total plays in the next few months.

On May 1, the Padres beat the Brewers 2-0 at Petco Park. The over/under line was 6 runs and both starting pitchers Shawn Marcum and Edison Volquez threw seven shutout innings of three-hit baseball. The Padres were a home underdog in that contest and I’ve noted some solid UNDER the total results on home underdogs with low posted totals below.

There have been 17 games played at Petco Park this season and we have yet to see a posted total above 7 runs. Despite the low posted totals, Padres home games have still gone 7-9-1 over/under.

Through the month of April, MLB teams were batting a combined .249. The last time MLB teams combined to hit under .250 for an entire season Read more

MLB Betting News: Halladay not in top form this season

05.04.2012     07:42 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
When a top-tier starter is off of his game, bettors have to be ready to pounce. Practically everyone has been aware of Tim Lincecum's struggles and those who have played against him have been rewarded. Another big name pitcher that may not be right is Philadelphia's Roy Halladay. On Wednesday, Halladay had one of the worst outings of his career, allowing eight earned runs and 12 hits against Atlanta. Following the outing, Halladay took a non-baseball related leave of absence from the team and is scheduled to return today. His next start is slated for Monday. Prior to the outing vs. Atlanta, Halladay's ERA of 1.95 made it seems as if nothing was wrong. But his strikeout numbers are down and his walks are up. There may not being anything wrong with the soon-to-be 35-year-old but he is certainly worth keeping an eye on.

“I was good, honestly,” Halladay said after the game. “I wish I had a better reason, but I don’t. It was just a lack of execution on pitches in key Read more

Free MLB Betting Pick: Texas Rangers at Cleveland Indians

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Texas (Lewis) -140 at Cleveland (Gomez) O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Under

Two of the hottest pitchers in the American League match up tonight in Cleveland with Colby Lewis taking on Jeanmar Gomez.  Possibly the best kept secret in the AL this season is Jeanmar Gomez.  A young pitcher out of Caracas, Gomez has shown considerable growth after his first two seasons in the majors and he has been lights out for the Indians to start the young campaign.  In his first start this season he was thrown out of the game in the 2nd inning for throwing at a Kansas City batter prompting the benches to clear.  Since then, he has two quality starts posting an overall WHIP of 0.85 and an ERA of 2.35.  He is definitely a young pitcher to keep your eye on as this is by no means the same Gomez from past seasons, and I'm being proactive with him until the marketplace catches up despite the probable return of Josh Hamilton and Adrian Beltre to the Texas lineup tonight.  Texas hurler Read more

MLB Handicapping: Tigers try to pinpoint Scherzer's problems

05.04.2012     07:16 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Trying to get a beat on Detroit Max Scherzer is extremely difficult. When he's on, he performs like a front-of-the-rotation arm and when he's not, he looks like Rick Porcello on a bad day. Mechanical flaws seem to be Scherzer's biggest enemy and after five starts and a 7.77 ERA, the Tigers have apparently caught what he is doing wrong. We recommend a wait-and-see approach. Scherzer is slated to throw at home on Saturday against the White Sox.

Scherzer and Tigers pitching coach Jeff Jones believe they’ve found a flaw in the righty’s mechanics, the Detroit Free Press reports. “We’re trying to get him to keep his hands more in the middle of his body as opposed to taking them behind him,” Jones said. “He’s gotten into a little bit of a habit of carrying them behind his body too far. That affects his lead arm getting on the target and staying there long enough.”
