College Football Gambling: Auburn tabs JC transfer Marshall starting QB

08.19.2013     12:57 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Junior college transfer Nick Marshall was named Auburn's starting quarterback by first-year head coach Gus Malzahn.

“We’re always going to play to our quarterback’s strengths, but he’s very unique,” Malzahn said. “There’s no doubt, he’s a phenomenal athlete. One of the better athletes I’ve probably gotten a chance to coach at the quarterback position. He’s got a very strong arm, and he’s very calm. The day that we went live, they were flying around him and I was right back there with him and he seemed like it was 7-on-7 mode.”

“We do understand what Nick can do. We think he’s got a lot more upside, that he’ll get better and more comfortable with everything. He’s got some ability to make plays when things break down. And in this league things break down from time to time.”

NCAA Football Handicapping: Arkansas seeks balanced offense under Bielema

08.19.2013     07:16 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A lot of bettors are curious how Arkansas' offense will look under first-year head coach Brett Bielema and offensive coordinator Jim Cheney. Great quote from Bielema after seeing the Razorbacks in the shotgun during a short yardage situation last season.

"I certainly hope the first short-yardage play this fall, we aren't in the (shot)gun," Bielema said.

"A lot of times in recruiting, people take shots at us that we're just going to be four yards and a cloud of dust," Bielema said. "If you look back at our history, we were one of the few teams that averaged over 220 yards running and throwing the ball, which to me creates great balance, which makes quarterback a little easier to read defenses."

College Football Gambling Update: Texas Tech wants more variety on defense

08.19.2013     07:03 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

As noted earlier this summer, Texas Tech will be working with its fifth defensive coordinator in five years. Reports indicated that first-year DC Matt Wallerstedt wants a lot more variety and aggression from this year's unit.

“Our scheme was predictable (in 2012),” sophomore middle linebacker Micah Awe said, “but this year we’re coming from different angles, so teams can’t just get one play and continue to run it.

“We’re going to be coming from every direction, throwing different fronts at them, dropping the coverage, throwing different combinations at them,” Hyder said. “It’ll definitely be difficult, especially the other offenses, especially if they haven’t seen them yet.”

“We’re going to continue to adjust. I think that was our main problem last year. Read more

College Football Betting: Purdue names Henry starting quarterback

08.19.2013     06:38 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Purdue first-year head coach Darrell Hazell tabbed senior Rob Henry the team's starting quarterback. Henry started seven games in 2010, missed 2011 with a knee injury, and played sparingly last season. It will be interesting to see how Hazell utilizes Henry who earlier in his career showed a decent ability to run the football (547 yards, 5.26 ypc in 2010). During Hazell's last season at Kent State the Golden Flashes ran the ball nearly 62% of the time.

College Football Betting: Another long season awaits Tim Beckman and Illinois

08.16.2013     09:19 AM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
On a recent Sportsmemo Podcast (you can listen here) I had a great conversation with Brian Edwards about the Big Ten and in particular Illinois. Brian was pretty vocal about his distaste for Illini head coach Tim Beckman who is heading into his second season in Champaign. I'm not as anti-Beckman as Brian but I do agree that he appears to be over his head and will have a difficult time fielding a competitive football team this year. So much so that I recommend a play on the UNDER with their season over/under wins. Unfortunately, 5Dimes appears to be the only sportsbook I know of offering a line, so if you can't get a bet down consider this a "fade report" of the Illini.

If you do play at 5Dimes, there are multiple numbers available. The baseline number is 3.5 with -120 juice on both sides. Playing 3.5 under is a good play, however, you can also get 4un-175 which is even stronger. In order to lose, Illinois will obviously have to get to five wins which I simply don’t see. But paying the extra juice gives you a little wiggle room as four wins Read more

College Football Betting: Marshall's improvement hinges on defense

08.15.2013     08:35 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A lot of things line up for Marshall to have a strong season – Rakeem Cato under center, 15 starters back, Phil Steele anointing the Herd as this year's most improved team. But before everyone goes gag-gag for this squad there's that pesky issue of defense. Last season, Marshall had without question one of the worst defenses in the country. Some of that can be attributed to the offenses ultra-fast pace, but when you allow 43.1 ppg, there's a problem. Doc Holliday brought in a new defensive coordinator, Chuck Heater who by name alone should have this unit on the upswing. According to reports, this year's stop unit fared well against the offense during a summer scrimmage.

“They’re a confident group,”  Head Coach Doc Holliday said. “Chuck [Heater] and that whole staff have done a tremendous job and there are a lot more athletes out there than there have been in the past.”

“It’s coming together real well,” Sparrow said. “In my career here we’ve been pretty light at the Read more

College Football Handicapping: Louisiana Tech reloads along offensive line

08.15.2013     07:24 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Tough situation for Louisiana Tech as first-year head coach Skip Holtz inherits only seven returning starters. One unit in particular that could have issues is the offensive line. Tech attempted over 500 passes last season but behind a very experienced o-line allowed only 10 sacks. This year’s group has only 15 career starts under its belt and will be working with a new quarterback and obviously a new system.

“We’re running a little bit different scheme, but we’re running the same type of stuff,” Shepperd said. “It’s with a little twist ... and I definitely think it could be good for us.

“It’s been a grind, but we’re still staying focused and keeping positive attitudes,” Banks said. “The competition has been pretty good, and we look at it like we’re pushing ourselves to become better athletes.”
