MLB Betting News: Halladay not in top form this season

05.04.2012     07:42 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
When a top-tier starter is off of his game, bettors have to be ready to pounce. Practically everyone has been aware of Tim Lincecum's struggles and those who have played against him have been rewarded. Another big name pitcher that may not be right is Philadelphia's Roy Halladay. On Wednesday, Halladay had one of the worst outings of his career, allowing eight earned runs and 12 hits against Atlanta. Following the outing, Halladay took a non-baseball related leave of absence from the team and is scheduled to return today. His next start is slated for Monday. Prior to the outing vs. Atlanta, Halladay's ERA of 1.95 made it seems as if nothing was wrong. But his strikeout numbers are down and his walks are up. There may not being anything wrong with the soon-to-be 35-year-old but he is certainly worth keeping an eye on.

“I was good, honestly,” Halladay said after the game. “I wish I had a better reason, but I don’t. It was just a lack of execution on pitches in key Read more

Free MLB Betting Pick: Texas Rangers at Cleveland Indians

Texas (Lewis) -140 at Cleveland (Gomez) O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Under

Two of the hottest pitchers in the American League match up tonight in Cleveland with Colby Lewis taking on Jeanmar Gomez.  Possibly the best kept secret in the AL this season is Jeanmar Gomez.  A young pitcher out of Caracas, Gomez has shown considerable growth after his first two seasons in the majors and he has been lights out for the Indians to start the young campaign.  In his first start this season he was thrown out of the game in the 2nd inning for throwing at a Kansas City batter prompting the benches to clear.  Since then, he has two quality starts posting an overall WHIP of 0.85 and an ERA of 2.35.  He is definitely a young pitcher to keep your eye on as this is by no means the same Gomez from past seasons, and I'm being proactive with him until the marketplace catches up despite the probable return of Josh Hamilton and Adrian Beltre to the Texas lineup tonight.  Texas hurler Read more

MLB Handicapping: Tigers try to pinpoint Scherzer's problems

05.04.2012     07:16 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Trying to get a beat on Detroit Max Scherzer is extremely difficult. When he's on, he performs like a front-of-the-rotation arm and when he's not, he looks like Rick Porcello on a bad day. Mechanical flaws seem to be Scherzer's biggest enemy and after five starts and a 7.77 ERA, the Tigers have apparently caught what he is doing wrong. We recommend a wait-and-see approach. Scherzer is slated to throw at home on Saturday against the White Sox.

Scherzer and Tigers pitching coach Jeff Jones believe they’ve found a flaw in the righty’s mechanics, the Detroit Free Press reports. “We’re trying to get him to keep his hands more in the middle of his body as opposed to taking them behind him,” Jones said. “He’s gotten into a little bit of a habit of carrying them behind his body too far. That affects his lead arm getting on the target and staying there long enough.”

MLB Gambling News: Yankees lose Rivera for the season

05.04.2012     06:31 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Now don't go getting all teary eyed on us but Mariano Rivera is going to be out for a while. We know, we know, the guy is a warrior and still one of the best relievers in the game. Don't worry, the Yankees have some decent arms that can fill his spot. David Robertson hasn't given up a run all season. Rafael Soriano has closed games before. No, neither one is as trustworthy and you can bet someone is going to blow a save here in the next week or so causing the earth's crust to shift. We can't wait either.

Cleveland (Masterson) at Chicago WS (Danks) -120 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Over

Justin Masterson made a few adjustments prior to his last start and got better results in allowing only two runs in 8.1 innings – albeit against the soft hitting Angels. But his velocity remains down and his command is very erratic. In his last three outings, Masterson has walked 15 batters. This after walking less than two per start last season. Like Masterson, John Danks hasn't been "right" at all this season and a lack of command has been the main culprit. Danks walked only 46 batters last season and has already issued 15 in five starts including four in each of his last two outings. As a result, he's allowed three or more runs in every outing. These struggles were apparent from both pitchers in an early season meeting where the duo combined for seven earned runs, 15 hits, six walks and five strikeouts with neither pitcher lasting past the sixth inning. Unseasonably warm weather with gusty Read more

MLB Betting News: Milwaukee Brewers banged up, Braun injures Achilles

05.03.2012     11:33 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Injuries are starting to mount for the Milwaukee Brewers. Ryan Braun left yesterday's game against San Diego with an Achilles strain. He's questionable for tomorrow's opening game series against San Francisco. Matt Gamel is out with an ACL tear. Gamel hadn't done much with the bat this season but the Brewers were banking on him eventually turning things around. Now they are considering moving Corey Hart to first base. And two weeks ago, Chris Narverson was lost for the season with rotator cuff injury.

MLB Handicapping: Walks and lack of change-up hurt Chicago's Danks

05.03.2012     06:43 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Cleveland (Masterson) at Chicago WS (Danks) -120 O/U 8

Chicago's John Danks has always been a notoriously slower starter but this season has been particularly rough. His command has been very spotty (15 walks) which is uncharacteristic for a guy who issued just 46 free passes in 170 innings last season. Danks himself commented that his normally effective change-up has been off and on.

"Walks have bit me in the ass all year to this point," Danks sighed. "[It's] definitely something we're going to have to focus on, that and keeping the ball in the ballpark. It's frustrating, it sucks. It sucks to go out there and get your hat handed to you. We're all competitive, we don't want that to happen, and what are you gonna do? Try to be ready for the next one."

MLB Gambling News: Beckett shelved for at least one start, Red Sox call up Cook

05.02.2012     02:22 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Anytime you see an article about a pitcher relying on command rather than velocity (except for Jamie Moyer) you should be suspicious. Take Boston's Josh Beckett who hasn't had much in the way of a true fastball this season. On Sunday, prior to Beckett's start, an article in the Providence Journal came out title "Beckett relying on movement and command, not velocity, to get outs". In it Beckett talks about change-ups, cutters and not always needing to strike guys out.

"Sometimes I think I'd rather have that speed differential be smaller so I get a ground ball or a weak pop-up or something," he said. "It's cool to strike guys out when you need to strike guys out. Other than that, you'd rather get guys in the dugout with a five- or 10-pitch inning rather than a 13- or 16-pitch inning."

Fast forward to Sunday night. And this is where it gets comical. Despite having a history of back problems, a loss in velocity and let's be honest, no longer Read more
