MLB Handicapping: Walks and lack of change-up hurt Chicago's Danks

05.03.2012     06:43 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Cleveland (Masterson) at Chicago WS (Danks) -120 O/U 8

Chicago's John Danks has always been a notoriously slower starter but this season has been particularly rough. His command has been very spotty (15 walks) which is uncharacteristic for a guy who issued just 46 free passes in 170 innings last season. Danks himself commented that his normally effective change-up has been off and on.

"Walks have bit me in the ass all year to this point," Danks sighed. "[It's] definitely something we're going to have to focus on, that and keeping the ball in the ballpark. It's frustrating, it sucks. It sucks to go out there and get your hat handed to you. We're all competitive, we don't want that to happen, and what are you gonna do? Try to be ready for the next one."

"It was hit or miss. Read more

MLB Gambling News: Beckett shelved for at least one start, Red Sox call up Cook

05.02.2012     02:22 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Anytime you see an article about a pitcher relying on command rather than velocity (except for Jamie Moyer) you should be suspicious. Take Boston's Josh Beckett who hasn't had much in the way of a true fastball this season. On Sunday, prior to Beckett's start, an article in the Providence Journal came out title "Beckett relying on movement and command, not velocity, to get outs". In it Beckett talks about change-ups, cutters and not always needing to strike guys out.

"Sometimes I think I'd rather have that speed differential be smaller so I get a ground ball or a weak pop-up or something," he said. "It's cool to strike guys out when you need to strike guys out. Other than that, you'd rather get guys in the dugout with a five- or 10-pitch inning rather than a 13- or 16-pitch inning."

Fast forward to Sunday night. And this is where it gets comical. Despite having a history of back problems, a loss in velocity and let's be honest, no longer Read more

MLB Handicapping: Verlander's workload remains a non-issue

05.02.2012     11:37 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article from Sports Illustrated on the amazingness of Justin Verlander. The innings continue to accumulate as do the high pitch counts but it doesn't seem to matter. It has been documented countless times that few if any work as hard not only during the offseason but in between starts which is where a lot of guys fail late in the season. Perhaps Verlander's biggest strength is his ability to pace himself throughout a game. The first few innings you'll commonly see his "batting practice" fastball (low 90s) rather than the 99 he hits in the 8th. Bettors won't get rich supporting Verlander and his big price tags but it’s a much better option than betting against him – he's working on a fourth straight profitable season.

"Research has shown that fatigue is a critical signal to stop pitching," Fleisig said. "If a pitcher is pitching as hard or harder at the end of the game and if he does not alter his mechanics and doesn't feel fatigued, then I don't think he's at any increased risk of injury. But Read more

Free MLB Betting Pick: Baltimore Orioles at New York Yankees

05.02.2012     10:01 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Baltimore (Arrieta) at NY Yankees (Nova) -170 O/U 9.5
Recommendation: Over

Baltimore’s lineup is suddenly surging, pounding out 23 runs in their last four games.  The Orioles hit Ivan Nova hard, notching ten hits against him when they faced him last month.  Nova has suffered from a reverse home/road dichotomy, with a career ERA more than a full run higher when pitching in the Bronx.  He was lit up by the Tigers in his last outing: 14 baserunners and six earned runs in just 5.1 innings of work.  There’s absolutely no reason to expect a dramatic improvement here, and Joe Girardi’s bullpen behind him is not in great shape following yesterday’s early exit from Phil Hughes.

Nova has a strong winning record (20-6) throughout his tenure as a Yankee for one reason and one reason only – loads of run support.  The numbers don’t lie: in Nova’s last 20 starts dating back to last year, the Bronx Bombers have lived up to Read more

MLB Gambling News: Cleveland's Ubaldo Jimenez continues to falter

05.02.2012     08:38 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article from FanGraphs on the decline of Ubaldo Jimenez. He was pounded around for 8 hits and 4 runs in 4.2 innings last night against Chicago. His velocity and swinging strikes have dropped dramatically over the past two seasons. From a betting perspective, he's down nearly -14 units since 2011.

Quite succinctly, Ubaldo Jimenez is a mess. His fastball velocity continues to plummet, his swinging strike rate has followed suit, and opposing hitters are forcing him to throw strikes by not swinging at as many pitches out of the strike zone. That has resulted in a 6.32 FIP through the month of April.

MLB Betting Preview: New York Mets at Houston Astros

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
NY Mets (Niese) -130 at Houston (Happ) O/U 8
Recommendation: New York

Houston took Game 1 of this series last night, turning five hits and two walks into four runs thanks to some solid clutch hitting. Don’t expect an Astros lineup that has produced three runs or less in half of their ten home games so far this season to have much success tonight against under-rated Mets hurler Jonathan Niese.  The Astros are just 1-4 against lefties in five tries in 2012, hitting just .227 as a team against southpaws.

Niese has thrown four consecutive quality starts to open up the new campaign.  He dominated the Astros on his last visit to Houston, throwing seven innings of one run ball.  It was the exact same story in his previous start here at Minute Maid Park: seven innings of one run ball.  The Mets were huge profit makers on the highway last year, earning an MLB best 17.6 units of profit for their 81 road games.  And when we look at the profitability Read more
