Poinsettia Bowl Betting Preview: Louisiana Tech Bulldogs vs. TCU Horned Frogs

Poinsettia Bowl
Louisiana Tech vs. TCU
Wednesday, 5 pm PT – ESPN
CRIS Opener: TCU -11 O/U 55.5
CRIS Current: TCU -9.5 O/U 56
Rob Veno Power Rating: TCU -11.5

Marty Otto’s Betting Take: Before the season kicked off I suspected that TCU would struggle to duplicate some of the its recent results with so much roster turnover. While it certainly wasn’t a cakewalk they played better than I had anticipated. The offense in particular outperformed any projection I had coming into the season, ranking ninth nationally while scoring over 40 points per game. Quarterback Casey Pachall is having a phenomenal year and this ground game has been awesome with the three-headed attack of Waymon James, Matthew Tucker and Ed Wesley. But for a team that’s played in back-to-back BCS bowl games, winding up in the Poinsettia Bowl could be a real let Read more

Handicapper Teddy Covers: Week 15 NFC Betting News and Notes

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Welcome to Teddy’s unique look at the NFL. Teddy watches games all day on Sunday, typing furiously on his laptop while giving you the key info that the box scores and game recaps don’t necessarily have. This week: NFC News and Notes from Week 15.

Chicago
Mike Martz has made a concerted effort to pound the running game between the tackles on first and second down to keep struggling backup QB Caleb Hanie out of bad down and distance situations. That strategy didn’t work today, despite a steady diet of Marion Barber (the New Bartman) and Kahlil Bell carries. Hanie got worse and worse as the game progressed. His tipped pass INT in the end zone wasn't a great throw, but it certainly wasn't an awful one. I can’t say the same about his second INT (returned for a TD), where Hanie made an awful throw under duress. His second pick six was even uglier, a throw from a QB who was acting like he didn't care very much. Now Johnny Knox is hurt too, carted off the field on a stretcher. Devin Hester has a bad ankle, held without a catch. This team Read more

College Basketball Odds: Miami center Johnson could return vs. FAU

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Miami-FL vs. Florida Atlantic

Miami may get a boost on Saturday with reports indicating that center Reggie Johnson could make his 2011-12 debut after undergoing knee surgery during the offseason. Johnson averaged 11.9 ppg and 9.6 rpg last year. His return should have a big impact considering the Hurricanes hit only 42.7% of their two-point shots (288th nationally). Johnson had 14 points and 20 rebounds in Miami's 85-62 win over Florida Atlantic in last year's NIT.

"It's just that presence, his size. [Opposing players] are kind of scared to go in there and see him," Grant said. "We're all exciting and we're waiting for him.

"It will make everybody else's job a lot easier. We've showed great flashes without him, but with him back, hopefully we can really start getting this thing rolling and Read more

NCAA Basketball Betting: Mississippi State's Moultrie questionable vs. Detroit

12.16.2011     01:35 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Mississippi State at Detroit

Mississippi State was without two starters last time out against Florida Atlantic (75-68 non-covering win), with guard Brian Bryant suspended and forward Arnett Moultrie sitting because of knee tendinitis. Moultrie, a transfer from UTEP, has without question been the team's MVP thus far (17.1 ppg, 11.2 rpg, 54.7% FGs). Without him it puts added pressure on fellow big man Renardo Sidney who has been asked to play only 20 minutes per game – anything more and he becomes fatigued and foul prone. Also note that Detroit just returned 6-10 center Eli Holman (15 ppg, 8 rpg) giving the Titans a much need post presence. Detroit has the tendency to play to the level of its competition (ATS covers vs. Notre Dame, Alabama, St. John’s and Cleveland State). If Moultrie doesn’t play, Detroit is a live underdog for Saturday.

College Football Betting: San Diego State banged up, cuts practice short

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Louisiana-Lafayette at San Diego State -4.5 O/U 59

Forget lack of motivation, San Diego State has bigger fish to fry like finding enough healthy bodies. The Aztecs were forced to cut Thursday's New Orleans Bowl practice short due to injuries. According to head coach Rocky Long, half of his starters will be playing with some sort of ailment.

“We’re a beat up football team,” said head coach Rocky Long, whose team plays Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday in the New Orleans Bowl. “Half of our starters will be playing with some form of ailment. We’ve got a whole bunch of guys who played the last half of season or more beat up. And guess what. When they’re playing, they don’t get well.”

NFL Gambling: Late season home underdogs

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Regular Fairway Followers that read my weekly articles and Inside the Numbers blog know I review and recap statistics, rushing results and offensive performances, along with ATS numbers. Included is information on how home underdogs fare. This season, home underdogs are 22-42 SU and 32-31-1 ATS – hardly profit-producing results. But with the arrival of Week 15 through Week 17, we enter the three most profitable weeks of the NFL season for home underdogs.

Over the past 20+ years, home underdogs playing on Sunday have won just over 60% ATS. However, the past two seasons have produced losing results, so we’re either seeing slight line adjustments or the situations are just not as strong. Regardless, Week 15 features an amazing eight home underdogs with six of those teams getting at least +6.5!

I’m fairly certain that following this week’s results, we’re going to be talking about some surprising upsets. After all, do you think the betting public is going to rush to the window to bet on Tampa Bay (0-7 SU, 1-6 ATS run), Kansas City (1-5 SU, 2-4 ATS run), Minnesota (2-11 SU including 0-5 SU, 1-3-1 ATS run), Indianapolis (0-13 SU, 2-7 ATS Read more

Poker players are familiar with the name Doyle Brunson, a legend known as Texas Dolly and the Godfather of Poker.  On December 14, Sportsmemo’s Fairway Jay was in attendance at the Palms Casino and talked with Doyle, Epic Poker League Commissioner Annie Duke and other poker pros and media members as Brunson was given the first ever Lifetime Membership to the EPL. Brunson was appreciative of the honor – a nod to the struggles players have endured to make poker the game it is today.

"He just has this secret sauce of every accomplishment you can imagine, big generosity to the poker community, incredible longevity, amazing ambassadorship," Duke said. "And then on top of that he's just an easy guy to really like."

The $20,000 Main Event started Wednesday prior to the Brunson press conference and 100 players battle for a $1 million first place prize. There are 61 players remaining in the Tournament – the third series of season, one which includes four rake-free Read more
