College Basketball Gambling: NCAA reveals science behind tournament selection

03.06.2012     11:23 AM     Printer Friendly
The NCAA normally doesn't like to show its card but it for whatever reason decided to release a seven-page document titled: PRINCIPLES AND PROCEDURES FOR ESTABLISHING THE BRACKET. One of the more interesting notes was that the committee tries to avoid sending teams cross country two consecutive years. They also want to avoid situations where "home crowd disadvantage" could take place; i.e. shipping Michigan to Columbus. None of this is really groundbreaking stuff, but it is always nice to hear from the man behind the curtain.

While every league has a full listing of team odds, a few sportsbooks are daring bettors to fade the Kentucky Wildcats in the upcoming SEC Tournament. Check out of the plus prices The Greek and Pinnacle are offering on the field.

Mountain West coaches none too pleased about UNLV hosting tourney

03.06.2012     07:20 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Various Mountain West Conference coaches voiced their displeasure over the perceived advantage host UNLV has over the remainder of the field. The Rebels enter this year's tourney with a 16-0 mark on their home floor. But despite the complaints, the postseason results historically show that the Thomas & Mack Center hasn't been the death trap some are making it out to be. After a three-year stretch in Denver, this will mark the sixth straight year the MWC Tournament will take place in Las Vegas. The Rebels have won only two of the last five titles – the last coming back in 2008. Interesting the San Diego State head coach Steve Fisher is one of those complaining – his Aztecs have won two straight titles with two wins over UNLV.

“I think it’s absolutely unfair,” San Diego State coach Steve Fisher said during Monday’s MW coaches’ teleconference. “It’s not done in any other major conference. ... It makes no sense, other than it’s good for the TV when it pans to the crowd and shows all those Read more

College Basketball Betting: Western Kentucky battles North Texas for Sun Belt crown

Western Kentucky vs. North Texas

The No. 5 seed will take on the No. 7 seed in tonight's Sun Belt Conference Championship. North Texas defeated Arkansas State while Western Kentucky pulled off another upset with a victory over No. 3 Denver. The once proud Western Kentucky program hit near rock bottom earlier in the year and went so far as to fire head coach Ken McDonald after a 5-11 start. Ray Harper took over but the losing continued. The Hilltoppers were at one point 6-15 overall and 2-6 in Sun Belt play. But things started to turn around after a few wins, including a big victory over Middle Tennessee in the season finale. From there, three straight coin-flip wins in the conference tournament and they find themselves Read more

College Basketball Betting Tips: Points per possession scored and allowed

03.05.2012     02:23 PM     Printer Friendly
John Gasaway's final regular season points per possession scored and allowed differential. Worth a bookmark for handicapping these upcoming tournaments. One team that stands out is Memphis' +0.22. The next closest team in C-USA is Tulsa at +0.07. Since mysteriously losing to UTEP at home, the Tigers closed out the regular season with wins by 23, 20, 29 and 12. Memphis hosts the C-USA Tournament and is a -200 favorite according to The Greek.

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Odds to win the Atlantic-10 Tournament courtesy of The Greek. For the sixth straight season, the event will take place in Atlantic City. Temple had won three straight titles prior to last season's Richmond win. The tournament is notorious for upsets with the No. 1 seed reaching the finals only once in the last five years. The last five title game matchups in terms of seeds have been: No. 4 vs. No. 3; No. 5 vs. No 2; No. 4 vs. No. 7; No 1. vs. No. 3; and No. 9 vs. No. 3. The better seed however won all five contests.

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Gonzaga Bulldogs vs. St. Mary's Gaels

Gonzaga vs. St. Mary's
Recommendation: Over 61.5 1st half

I respect the defensive numbers Gonzaga has posted this year (0.93 points per possession vs. WCC) as well as St. Mary's lower-the-usual pace numbers over the past month (56-64 possessions in eight straight games) but were also dealing with the top two offenses in the conference and both are not shy about taking advantage of fast break opportunities. In the last 10 games in this series, only once did we see a halftime score fall below 63 points. And two of those contests where in this exact setting; the conference championship title game (39-34 and 38-25). This is the fourth straight year at this venue, the Orleans Arena, so both teams are obviously comfortable with the rims and backdrop. And both factors that often tell bettors there are tight rims – free throw and three-point shooting – have been fairly average with six games producing a combined 66% from the foul line and 38% from three-point land. This projects to be a close game so there is always the potential for it to turn into a grind late so let's take advantage of the low total and play over first half.

Big East Conference Tournament Gambling Preview

Big East Conference Tournament
Madison Square Garden / New York, NY / Host: St. John’s

Favorite - #1 Syracuse
The Orange have been the class of the league from start to finish. On a neutral court, my power ratings have them three points better than the next closest Big East team (Marquette) which gives them the third highest differential of the six BCS conferences. They’re going to be difficult to beat in this tournament because of their ability to adapt to any style. They’re not a great half court offensive team but they’re good enough and their 2-3 zone defense is so long and active that it can win games for them. In a transition style they’re as fast and efficient as any conference team including Marquette. The best way to defeat them is to force them into playing half court offense, allow just one shot and then rebound and play aggressive transition offense. It’s easier said and very difficult to do, but slowing them down and getting easy baskets before their defense can set up is necessary. All that said, and as good as Syracuse is, they do enter this tournament on a poor 4-8 ATS run Read more
