Friday MLB Free Play: Texas at Milwaukee

06.11.2010     06:58 AM     Printer Friendly
Courtesy of Brent Crow and the Sportsmemo Newsletter   Texas (Harden) at Milwaukee (Narveson)
BEST BET: #972 Over 9.5

With Rich Harden on the mound for the Rangers, the Brew Crew should have little trouble putting up some runs. I have played against Harden for most of the season and he continues to struggle with a 5.34 ERA and a league leading 43 walks allowed in just 64 innings. Instead of playing against Texas here, however, we will go over the total as Milwaukee starter Chris Narveson is also struggling and the Brewers’ bullpen is obviously not very good. Narveson has made eight starts and 17 appearances and owns a 5.83 ERA overall. He has just two quality efforts on the Read more

Tuesday MLB Free Play: Chicago at Milwaukee

06.08.2010     09:35 AM     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange   Chicago (Lilly) at Milwaukee (Gallardo) O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Over

Chicago’s Ted Lilly has been effective but far from flawless, walking three or more in each of his last four starts and benefitting from three games against the Pirates. He also cashed in with the wide strike zone of John Hirschbeck on his April 24th start against the Brewers – it was Doug Davis’ only quality start of the season! – throwing six scoreless innings. Milwaukee’s right-handed power should be able to push across a couple of runs tonight in Miller Park. Yovani Gallardo has been the lone bright spot for the Milwaukee pitching staff with a 2.64 ERA. He however could be a tough position tonight coming off back-to-back high effort outings.  He threw a season-high 121 pitches in a complete game effort against the Mets on May 28th and then threw 114 pitches last time out against Florida. Prior to those two outings, six-innings and less than Read more

Capuano and Brewers hope to buck 22-game losing streak

06.03.2010     02:22 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Milwaukee’s Chris Capuano is scheduled to pitch tonight for the first time since 2007. The last game he threw a pitch was on September 28th. The last time the Brewers won a game when Capuano pitched was May 7th. Unfortunately, there were 22 games in between. Capuano started 18 games and threw four more in relief during the 22-game span and Milwaukee went 0-22. Now not all of the blame should be place on Capuano as he was responsible for only 78 of the 161 allowed runs. And we'll also point out that the Brewers averaged only 3.2 runs per game during that stretch. Still, it is an impressive run. He’s a +200 underdog against the Marlins and Josh Johnson tonight.

Capuano makes first appearance for Brewers since 2007

06.02.2010     02:44 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
When your team ERA is 5.53 for the month of May, bringing back guys who haven't thrown since 2007 doesn't seem like that bad of an idea. Milwaukee left-hander Chris Capuano will pitch for the first time since 2007 tomorrow against the Florida Marlins and Josh Johnson. Capuano unfortunately had to endure not one but two Tommy John surgeries. The Brewers removed him after just 59 pitches in his last start for Triple-A Nashville in anticipation of the call-up. In 2009 Capuano threw just 18 Minor League innings. This year, in seven starts for Single-A and Triple-A, Capuano had a 1.59 ERA with four walks and 33 strikeouts in 39.2 innings. Like a lot Brewer pitchers, he'll probably be limited in terms of effectiveness past a certain point which leaves the dreaded bullpen as a likely participant when he throws. Manny Parra will be sent back to the bullpen.

Early Start MLB Free Play: Houston at Milwaukee

05.27.2010     08:44 AM     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Fairway Jay

Houston (Myers) at Milwaukee (Bush)
Recommendation: Astros +120 5-inning
Early start for the National League’s two worst teams. We’ve actively been playing against Milwaukee starter Dave Bush including a huge over the total winner at Minnesota when the Twins crushed him for seven runs in the first inning of 15-3 win his last start. Now Bush is favored while sporting a home ERA of 6.75, a BAA of 3.41 and a May ERA over 7.20. His WHIP is 1.76 and he’s obviously struggling while also showing a 24:24 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Bush also sports has a negative BPV (Base Performance Value). This is a formula that combines the individual raw skills of dominance, control and the ability to keep the ball on the ground – all characteristics that are unaffected by most external team factors. This is a key stat in determining which pitchers are in trouble and which are throwing great. A BPV of 50 is the minimum level required for long-term success. Read more

Interleague News and Notes: A look back at the weekend

05.24.2010     07:16 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Atlanta (23-21) played in the only non-Interleague series of the weekend, quietly taking two of three from Pittsburgh to move into sole possession of second place in the National League East. The Braves have won 10 of 13 as the offense has started to pick things up. During the 13-game stretch, their splits read: .284/.366/.496/.862.

The Kansas City Royals moved to 2-8 with starter Zach Greinke on the hill after Greinke was pounded by Colorado for seven runs in 3.1 innings. It was the first non-quality start for the ace right-hander since April 16th.

The New York Mets may have saved manager Jerry Manuel’s job for the time being by taking two of three from the Yankees. The Bronx Bombers have lost 10 of 15 and travel to Minnesota on Tuesday for a three-game set. The Mets have also lost 10 of 15 but only one win separates second and fifth place in the NL East.

Brewers running out of arms for Sunday tilt against Twins

05.22.2010     10:04 PM     Printer Friendly
The Sportsmemo Blog has been your No. 1 source for all that is Milwaukee Brewers' pitching failures. We certainly commend Saturday's effort as the Brew Crew put up five runs in the ninth to take a one-run lead over the Twins only to give up the tying run in the bottom of the inning. That run prolonged the game to 12 innings and took Sunday's slated starter Manny Parra out of the mix as he was forced to throw – and eventually got tagged with the loss. As for Sunday, Milwaukee goes to battle with Marco Estrada who has made exactly one career start and sports a lifetime ERA of 6.38. Overnight lines currently list Estrada as a +160 underdog against Carl Pavano.

The Twins led 4-0 in the first, but Milwaukee (16-27) scored five times in the ninth, taking the lead off Jon Rauch who blew his second save in 12 chances. However, Minnesota scored in the Read more

Milwaukee Brewers Update: It offically got worse

05.21.2010     08:36 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Milwaukee starter Dave Bush recorded just one out as he allowed seven earned runs in the first inning of tonight's game against Minnesota. Not only has Milwaukee's bullpen been bad but they've been worked extremely hard of late and aren't exactly built to pitch seven plus innings. Jeff Suppan relieved Bush and was torched for five runs in 3.2 innings. Claudio Vargas gave up a run in his two innings of work. Mitch Stetter, currently the team's only left-handed option out of the pen, tried to duplicate Bush and recorded one out and allowed two earned runs before getting pulled. His ERA is now well north of 13.00. Todd Coffey finally stopped the bleeding by getting the last five outs without somehow surrendering a run.

When the smoke cleared, the Twins scored 15 runs on 17 hits. Amazingly Minnesota had only four extra base hits – all doubles. Nearly all of the damage came from singles...and walks as Milwaukee issued Read more

Milwaukee bullpen causes problems even when not pitching

05.20.2010     07:00 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Heading into yesterday's start, Milwaukee's Randy Wolf had pitched into the seventh inning only three of his eight starts. During those eight starts he averaged 104.5 pitches. Of course much has been made of not only the Brewers' losing streak but the cause of their frustration – the bullpen. Last night in Pittsburgh, the Brewers had a 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning and Wolf was at 100 pitches. He had labored through the sixth inning, recording two outs before getting out of a bases loaded jam. They sent him out there to face the top of the order in the seventh. Here is the play-by-play of the inning:

- L. Milledge singled to center
- B. Crosby sacrificed to pitcher, L. Milledge to second
- A. McCutchen walked
- G. Jones singled to shallow right center, L. Milledge scored, A. McCutchen to third
- R. Doumit singled to shallow center, A. Read more

Brewers bullpen tanks again; This is not a duplicate post

05.18.2010     01:10 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The picture on your left is not what Milwaukee fans did to Miller Park after yet another blown save by Trevor Hoffman today -- though we promise there are a few who contemplated the move. Milwaukee’s bullpen is so bad that we might as well put today’s earlier blog post on an infinite loop. Last Thursday, the bullpen’s ERA was 5.87; this morning it was 6.16. After today’s implosion, the number jumped to 6.24. On a positive note, those Cincinnati Reds just continue to win ball games. And as bad as things have been for Brewers, keep in mind that they won their last two games on the 5-inning line; an angle worth considering until the bullpen gets fixed.

Marty Otto passes along these numbers regarding Read more
