South Point's College Football Bowl Contest came down to BCS Championship

01.10.2014     07:32 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

According to The Vegas Parlay, no one managed to go 16-for-16 in South Point's College Football Handicapping Contest. Picking games straight up, two contestants were 13-for-15 heading into the BCS Championship – one had Florida State and one had Auburn. The end result was a nice $50K payday.

Cantor Gaming hit with $2 million fine

01.08.2014     01:46 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Looks like Cantor Gaming is being hit with a $2 million fine for not knowing and/or doing anything about former employee Mike Colbert's actions.

The complaint said the company or Lee Amaitis, chief executive of the Las Vegas-based sports-betting unit, known until this week as Cantor Gaming, knew or should have known that one of their top executives was taking illegal bets. According to the complaint, failure to supervise an employee sufficiently to prevent criminal activity violates Nevada gaming regulations. Cantor Gaming's failure to do so "tends to reflect poorly on the reputation of gaming in the State of Nevada" and could hurt development of the industry, the complaint said.

Vegas poker player tips cab driver $10K for returning forgotten $300K

01.02.2014     08:02 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In keeping with today's Good Samaritan theme, here's another gem. An unnamed Las Vegas poker player left $300K in a cab and had it returned courtesy of the cab driver. He "tipped" the cabbie $10K for his nice deed.

"It's good enough, I really appreciate it," Gamboa said about the reward. "I wasn't expecting anything from the people I help. I never expect anything from the people I do good for, but I really appreciate it and that he appreciated what I'd done for him."

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: Playoff bound, but Super Bowl XLVIII bound?

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last year, heading into Week 17, Atlanta was the team to beat in the NFC, having already clinched homefield advantage with their 13-2 (at the time) record.  Washington was the hottest team in the conference and Green Bay was considered very live for the title, with Aaron Rodgers just one year removed from his Super Bowl ring.  In the AFC, the playoff were expected to be an eventual battle between the Patriots and Broncos, with the other four teams (Baltimore, Cincinnati, Houston and Indy) largely considered to be fodder for the elites; non-factors.

What happened? A San Francisco-Baltimore Super Bowl, won by the Ravens; their third straight postseason win as an underdog.  Let’s not forget that Baltimore entered the playoffs in the midst of a late season 1-4 SU and ATS skid; a team that NOBODY expected to make noise in January and February.

In 2011, in the NFC, Green Bay was the unbeatable juggernaut with a 15-1 record as the defending champs, and the Saints weren’t far behind, just one year removed from a Drew Brees Super Bowl ring.  Meanwhile, the Giants were on the outside of the playoff picture, needing to beat Dallas just to get Read more

Former Vegas gambling exec runs into trouble for playing at Pinnacle

12.05.2013     07:59 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Because of his ties to Pinnacle Sports, former Golden Nugget owner Timothy Poster had his application to work in the gaming industry rejected by the Nevada Gaming Control Board. Funny that despite residing in Las Vegas, Poster placed bets at Pinny simply because its limits were higher.

Burnett told Poster, "I've heard you're a really good guy. I like you personally." But the board cannot ignore these violations.

Board member Terry Johnson said he could not approve the license because of "his associations with certain persons" and his online wagering with an illegal sports betting service.

Johnson said he had "trouble accepting that you (Poster) did not know it was an unlawful act."

Las Vegas casinos hope for the best when it comes to collecting debt

11.01.2013     07:12 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Interesting article in the Las Vegas Sun about how casinos deal with gambling debts from high rollers.

John Kempf, a casino industry analyst with RBC Capital Markets, says casino companies tend to set higher allowances for debt more because they are depending on a few individuals to pay up. In some cases, a single customer might make up a quarter or more of a casino company's outstanding debt.

Cantor Gaming still hoping to change sports betting industry

10.29.2013     06:46 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Good article in the Wall Street Journal about the ups and downs for Cantor Gaming. Topics include Mike Colbert, money laundering, the practice of taking big bets, wiretaps, and a canceled IPO.

“Maybe Lee [Amaitis] is right and everybody else has been wrong,” said Mark Lipparelli, a former head of the Nevada Gaming Control Board. “I think you have to get to yourself to a place that says you don’t believe in market theory to think it won’t work. I happen to believe in market theory.”

“They came into town with guns ablazing, saying there’s a new way to run sports books,” said Micah Roberts, a former casino sports-book director who writes about sports betting. “They believed that eventually, in the long haul, you will grind out a profit by taking all bets.”

Caesars Palace being investigated for money laundering

10.23.2013     01:55 PM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Caesars is the news again and this time it's a little more serious than walking away from a potential casino deal. Turns out Caesars Palace is being investigated for money laundering. Last week's Caesars' stock was hovering around $20-$22. When news broke of the alleged financial shenanigans it dropped to just above $17. So the stock market and betting markets really are one in the same. News breaks that Tom Brady's ACL is being held together by fishing line and the Pats go off as home dogs to the Dolphins!
