Super Bowl XLVII Betting: Three straight scores prop bet history

01.22.2013     06:31 AM     Printer Friendly
One of many prop bets that always draws interest from bettors is Will There Be Three Straight Scores? We went back on got the results of every Super Bowl and found that three straight scores occurred 32 times (69.5%). There was a 22-year stretch where it occurred 20 times but the trend has cooled off of late with just four of the last nine Super Bowls featuring three straight scores. Most sportsbooks offer anywhere from -180 to -200 on the "yes" and +150 to +160 on the "no."

NFL Handicapping: Drive Points and Power Ratings for Super Bowl XLVII

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Submitted by Stat Intelligence

As promised, we’re back to look at the drive point numbers for the two remaining teams in the NFL brackets. If you’re new to the blog, drive points are those scored and allowed on drives of 60 yards or more. We’ve been using it through the regular season to try and get a read as best as possible on “true” offense and defense.

First, a reminder of the regular season averages for the Super Bowl bound San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens.

Regular Season Averages

San Francisco: 15.4 on offense, 11.6 on defense (#3 Sagarin schedule)

Baltimore: 15.7 on offense, 12.5 on defense (#18 Sagarin schedule)

The Niners get the nod in regular season numbers, with +3.8 vs. a killer schedule being better than +3.2 vs. what was roughly an average schedule. Is strength of schedule enough to bump them up to superiority by more than a field goal at a neutral site? Interesting that teams coached by brothers had such similar Read more

A perfect match: Gambling and the Super Bowl

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Publicly, the NFL is among one of the staunchest opponents of legalized gambling. Former commissioner Paul Tagliabue and current commissioner Roger Goodell were instrumental in getting the anti gaming ‘Illegal Internet Gambling Prohibition Act’ attached to the Port Security Bill. The NFL has taken this stance despite the fact that its enormous popularity is, in no small part, due to the prevalence of betting on games.

The hypocrisy of the NFL in regards to betting is almost laughable. The facts, as you will see, clearly show that the league was founded by gamblers for gamblers. From the NFL’s first television appearance in 1939 through the current TV deal that pumps more than three billion dollars per year into the league coffers, the NFL’s popularity rests upon the shoulders of those who wager on the outcome of the games.

Here in the 21st century, the NFL is the most popular and profitable sport in the. NFL owners are among the richest men in the world; franchises are bought and sold for more than half a billion dollars. However, the league’s humble origins were anything but the extravagant bonanza that is the NFL today. Read more

All-Time Super Bowl Betting Results 1967-2012

01.21.2013     08:17 AM     Printer Friendly
Here are you all-time Super Bowl results dating back to 1967. Only six times have we seen the team to win fail to cover the pointspread. Overall, favorites are 26-19 against the spread (the 1982 Super Bowl was lined as a pick 'em) but underdogs have been the play of late with eight of the last 11 taking the money. In terms of totals, the UNDER was the way to play it back in the late 60’s and early 70's. The 80's and 90's trended OVER the total but it has shifted back towards the UNDER with six of the last eight winning.

Sportsmemo's Teddy Covers featured in upcoming sports betting movie Life On The Line

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
I write about sports every week. Next week in this space, I’ll be writing about Super Bowl props. Two weeks from now, it’ll be all about college basketball through the end of March Madness. But not today. Today, I’m going to write about movies. Nobody needs two full weeks of Super Bowl hype!

There are no great sports betting movies –none. Hollywood has produced a handful of great gambling movies – The Sting, Casino, Rounders, The Hustler and Croupier certainly stand out. But when it comes to anything resembling realism in a sports betting movie, it doesn’t exist. Every bettor in a Hollywood sports betting movie is a compulsive addict; every bookmaker is evil and they always win.

There are no exceptions in this tried and true Hollywood formula. If Richard Dreyfuss isn’t uncontrollably gambling on every race in ‘Let it Ride’, then Matthew McConaughey is forcing his clients into bankruptcy and letting his entire career path depend on a coin-flip in ‘Two for the Money’. Even Bruce Willis, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Vince Vaughn couldn’t save last year’s ‘Lay the Favorite’; just Read more

NFL Betting News: Know your officiating crews for Sunday's title games

01.18.2013     12:29 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Worth a read as ESPN spits out some numbers on both officiating crews for Sunday's NFC and AFC championship games.

McAulay's 52 holding calls tied with Ron Winter for the most among the officials. As a result, McAulay's games average 44 points a game, 1.7 below the league average. Leavy tends to let the players play. His 13.9 penalties a game is the ninth fewest. His 22 holding penalties tied for the second fewest. But cornerbacks need to watch out. Leavy led the NFL with 20 pass interference penalties. His games tend to be higher scoring at 48.7 points, fifth highest among officials.
