NHL Handicapper Free Play: Anaheim Ducks at Los Angeles Kings

Anaheim at Los Angeles -140 O/U 5
Recommendation: Los Angeles

The Anaheim Ducks played fairly well in Games 1 and 2 of this series yet they trail the Los Angeles Kings 2-0 heading into the Staples Center in for tonight’s Game 3. Anaheim held the lead for most of Game 1 but Marian Gaborik scored the tying goal with several seconds left in the third period to force OT where eventually the Kings won. In Game 2, Anaheim poured on the pressure and outshot the Kings 37-17 but could not score the timely goal required to tie the game in the third and LA was able to pull away 3-1. Anaheim didn’t play very well on the road in its first round series against Dallas going 1-2 – the lone win was fortunate as the Stars coughed up a late 4-2 lead with less than two minutes left. Los Angeles is a veteran team with Stanley Cup winning experience and I trust them to step on the throat of the opposition. The Kings jumped out to four straight 3-0 series leads in the 2012 Playoffs. They did the same in the first round last year against St. Louis. LA is the better of these two teams and it has shown in the fact they’ve won two games without playing Read more

Pro sports teams partnering with gambling entities

05.07.2014     12:17 PM     Printer Friendly
Article in Sports Illustrated about to evolving relationship between professional sports teams and casinos and online gambling sites.

Earlier this year the New Jersey Devils and the Philadelphia 76ers signed sponsorship agreements with PartyPoker, an online portal owned by bwin, operator of a large Internet sports book. Around the same time Major League Baseball -- having last year dismissed fantasy leagues as "a flip of the coin" akin to gambling -- quietly partnered with DraftKings, which bills itself as "Daily Fantasy Sports for Cash." In 2012 the NFL lifted its ban on teams accepting some advertisements from casinos. The WNBA's Phoenix Mercury have a jersey sponsorship deal with an Arizona casino, while the Connecticut Sun play home games at Mohegan Sun.

Boston -130 at Montreal O/U 5
Recommendation: Boston

Rarely in the NHL playoffs do you see both road teams favored, but that is what we get tonight as Boston travels to Montreal for Game 3 in a 1-1 series while Chicago travels to Minnesota with a 2-0 series lead.  Despite losing serve on home ice Boston takes the momentum of Game 2 with them on the road where they sport the best road record in the Eastern Conference.  Boston once again came back from a two goal deficit to defeat Montreal 5-3.  The Bruins are a team of momentum; once you wake the sleeping giant there is no going back and the mental mindset of that team is righted and it's all she wrote.  I saw this transformation by the Bruins after they scored to cut Montreal's lead to 3-2 on Saturday.  You could sense at that instance the Bruins regained their confidence and began believing again.  This is the most important game of the series in my mind.  Boston will win Game 3 and will win the series in 5 games.  I've seen momentum and confidence with great teams in hockey for a long time, and I know when a series is over.  The Bruins win this one and Read more

NHL Handicapping: Advanced stats big part of Chicago Blackhawks success

05.02.2014     11:22 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Great article on the Chicago Blackhawks and their usage of advanced analytics. The Blackhawks have won two Stanley Cup titles in the last four years and are currently a heavy favorite over Montreal in the Western Conference semifinals.

“Stats are what they are,” Bowman said. “There’s no disputing who scored the goal, or who was on the ice for the goal. That’s fact. What you do with that is sort of the real value. And I think there’s an art to it. The analytics themselves are very objective. But then you have to do something with them and draw conclusions.”

“What we do is different,” Bowman said. “I think it’s better, but I guess it’s a matter of opinion. It’s also a competitive advantage. That stuff’s readily available, but what we have is more proprietary. Which is why I’m really trying not to talk about it. I think what we do gives us an advantage over other teams. They might say

NHL Playoffs Handicapper Free Play: San Jose Sharks at Los Angeles Kings

San Jose at Los Angeles -110 O/U 5
Recommendation: Over

This series is 3-0 to the Over so far and it’s not by accident. Los Angeles has been unable to keep San Jose’s speed through the neutral zone in check which normally isn’t an issue for the Kings’ historically strong defense. LA has been running around in its own zone for minutes on end in this series and that has resulted in a lot more quality scoring chances and goals. A venue shift to their home ice at the Staples Center in Game 3 didn’t change things and I’m not expecting any sort of drastically different result tonight either. The Kings have yielded 33, 40 and 40 shots on goal in the three games and have made goaltender Jonathan Quick look rather ordinary. On the flip side, Los Angeles has been drawn into playing a more up and down game and has seen its scoring chances increase with 34, 26 and 31 shots on net in the first three games. The physical nature of this series has also resulted in a penalty parade with San Jose scoring a power play goal in every game and LA netting a pair of PP goals in Game 3. This total of 5 with minimal juice has been the Read more
