NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: New York Islanders at Winnipeg Jets

NY Islanders -130 at Winnipeg O/U 5.5
Recommendation: New York

My clients and I cashed a winner fading the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday night and there are still plenty of opportunities moving forward including tonight as they host the surging NY Islanders. Winnipeg is 7-15 in its last 22 games since early January including a 2-6 current run. This extended stretch of losing has basically taken them from the fringe of contending for a playoff spot in the Western Conference to completely out of the mix. They traded captain Andrew Ladd to Chicago before the deadline and their top center and second leading scorer Bryan Little is out for the rest of the season with a compression fracture vertebrae injury. More issues for a Winnipeg team not loaded with quality depth. They have struggled defensively and in goal as Mike Hutchinson (tonight’s starter) has been mediocre at best this season and Ondrej Pavelec has not regained any sort of good form since returning from injury. Winnipeg has very little home ice edge these days nor confidence winning in their own building with a dismal 1-8 record in their last nine home games. The Islanders have had a very Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Calgary Flames at Boston Bruins

Calgary at Boston -230 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Over

My clients and I have cashed a multitude overs involving the Calgary Flames since the All-Star break and that is a trend worth riding tonight as the Flames face the Boston Bruins. This is going to sound like a broken record but Calgary is struggling defensively and its goaltending regardless of whether it is Jonas Hiller or Joni Ortio isn’t at a high enough level to bail them out of their defensive shortcomings. Things are even worse now in terms of goal prevention after trading defenseman Kris Russell at the deadline yesterday. That leaves them without one of their best defensemen who is always in good position, a shot blocking machine, along with being a very strong penalty killer. Calgary has allowed 42 goals in its last 10 games. The Flames also have the suspension to Dennis Wideman in effect and Ladislav Smid is out due to injury -- bad news for an already struggling defensive unit which now has to rely on Deryk Engelland and a lot of youth and inexperience to eat up more minutes. They simply aren't up to the task and have been exposed defensively for a lack of positioning and speed in Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Calgary Flames at Philadelphia Flyers

Calgary at Philadelphia
Recommendation: Philadelphia -1.5 +180

The Philadelphia Flyers look to earn an important pair of points tonight as they host the Calgary Flames. With 67 points, the Flyers are third in the Wild Card race in the Eastern Conference with 21 games left and just four points behind rival Pittsburgh for that final playoff berth. Philly has earned at least 1 point in seven of its last 10 games and are 3-1-1 in their last five contests at home. Calgary has made some moves before the deadline, most notably trading away veteran Jiri Hudler to the Florida Panthers for a pair of draft picks; a sign that this Pacific Division club that just a year ago was making noise in the postseason, is now rebuilding for the future. Calgary has lost three of its last four games on the road and are 2-7-1 away from home versus Eastern Conference opponents this season. This is a clear cut case of one team looking to make a push into the playoffs against a squad that is looking forward to the offseason. The Flames have failed to cover the puck-line in five of their last seven losses as an underdog, and their defense has allowed 25 or more shots on goal in Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Winnipeg Jets at Dallas Stars

Winnipeg at Dallas -180 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Over

The Winnipeg Jets are a team that knows their fate. They won’t making the playoffs this year and will be active sellers at next week’s trade deadline. As a result, we’ve seen a noticeable lack of intensity from this team which has really shown up at the defensive end of the ice in recent games. Winnipeg has surrendered an alarming 36 goals in their last 10 games including a pair of games against this potent Dallas Stars team in which they allowed 5 goals in each game with both contests flying over the total. I see no reason to expect anything dramatically different from Winnipeg tonight as they once again face the Dallas Stars tonight for the third time in their last 11 games. Dallas has the high flying offense with a roster littered with top end skill players that can put the puck in the net with five players on the team: Jason Spezza, Patrick Sharp, John Klingberg, Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn all having more than 40 points. However, the defense has been an issue for them most of the season but especially in recent games with the Stars allowing 16 goals in their last three games. Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Nashville Predators at Chicago Blackhawks

Nashville at Chicago O/U 5
Recommendation: Chicago -1.5 +210

The Chicago Blackhawks will battle their division rivals the Nashville Predators tonight at the United Center. The Blackhawks should be refocused and ready to take out some anger after Sunday's embarrassing 6-1 loss to Minnesota in the Stadium Series game held outside at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. Despite losing three of their last four games at the "Madhouse on Madison", Chicago sports a stellar 22-7-2 overall home record. They also hold a 6-3-1 record against Central Division opponents including a pair of wins against Nashville this season. The Predators come into this contest winners of four of their last six games and 3-0-1 in their last four road games. Nashville currently holds the top Wild Card spot in the Western Conference with 69 points with fellow division foe Colorado trailing by only three points. These two teams always play each other tough, and while the Hawks have turned in some lackluster efforts since the All-Star Break, this club knows that they’ll have to bring their A-game versus a division rival. Chicago has covered the puck-line in six of their Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Calgary Flames at Los Angeles Kings

Calgary at Los Angeles -200 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Over

My clients and I have cashed a multitude of over-the-total winners involving the Calgary Flames since the All-Star break and that is a trend worth riding tonight as they head west to face the Los Angeles Kings. Calgary is struggling defensively and goalie Jonas Hiller has not been able to hold up since taking over the starting role for injured Karri Ramo. Hiller has allowed 22 goals over his last five starts in net. Flames defenseman Kris Russell is not a household name but he might be one of the more unsung injuries in the league. Russell is a plus defensive player in his own zone, a shot blocking machine, and also a very strong penalty killer. Calgary has allowed 18 goals to Anaheim (twice), Minnesota and Vancouver in its last four games without Russell on the ice as the penalty kill was ripped apart. He is likely to once again be out of the lineup for tonight's game. The Flames also have the suspension to Dennis Wideman in effect and they've lost another blue liner as Ladislav Smid went down with an injury in the loss to Minnesota and he has been placed on IR. That is bad news for an already Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Minnesota Wild at Edmonton Oilers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Minnesota -110 Edmonton O/U 5.5
Recommendation: See analysis

My clients and I cashed a pair of tickets with Minnesota and the over last night in its 5-3 win over Calgary and that is the same route I will take tonight as the Wild look to make it three straight wins since their coaching change. Minnesota has responded in a big way in its first two games under interim head coach John Torchetti having notched back-to-back wins over Vancouver and Calgary following a brutal 1-13 slide. They have played with a lot more energy and have been employing a more aggressive, attack minded style of hockey as they have burst out for 10 goals in their last two games. That is trouble for an Edmonton team that has struggled defensively most of the season especially of late as the Oilers have yielded 24 goals during their current 1-5 skid. It also doesn’t help that they’ve seen another defenseman go down with an injury as Eric Gryba suffered a knee injury in Edmonton’s last game against Anaheim and will be out for at least a month. That's not good for an Oilers team lacking quality depth on the blue line. This is not an optimal spot for Minnesota Read more
