Boston -140 at Detroit O/U 5
Recommendation: Boston

Boston heads to Detroit tonight with the series knotted up at one game apiece. The Bruins played their typical grind it out game throughout Game 1, but couldn't seem to break through offensively.  It took a great individual effort from Detroit's Pavel Datsyuk late in the third period to get the Red Wings the 1-0 win.  Game 2 was much different as Boston was able to take advantage of its chances and put some goals on the board.  They went to the net hard and they were rewarded.  They didn't deviate from their plan and they stifled Detroit's offense once again allowing just one goal in a 4-1 win. Detroit's home ice advantage has been virtually nonexistent the past two seasons as they were a meager 18-13-10 at Joe Louis this regular season and just 4-4 over the past two postseason. Boston owned the best road record in the Eastern Conference this season at 23-12-6 and in the past three postseason the Bruins are 6-3 away from home in the first round.  Going into Detroit will be just another day at the job for the big bad Bruins.  Boston has the confidence and swagger back Read more

Minnesota at Colorado -140 O/U 5
Recommendation: Over

Minnesota and Colorado played each other five times during the regular season and three of those games had five goals or more. We saw all three playoff games last night fly over the total and I think this game has high scoring potential as well. I'll give credit to goalie Ilya Bryzgalov for playing unexpectedly well late in the season but his career has been marred by awful playoff performances and I'm not ready to trust him to shut down a very potent Colorado Avalanche squad that ranked 4th in the NHL in goals scored this season. On the flip side, Minnesota is no offensive juggernaut (24th in the NHL at 2.43 goals per game) but they did show an uptick in offensive production late in the season scoring 3+ goals in six of their last eight games. As mentioned we saw a loose type of hockey in all three Game 1's last night and I think this game sets up for Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Play: Washington Capitals at Carolina Hurricanes

Washington at Carolina -125 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Carolina

I’m not expecting an inspired effort from the Washington Capitals tonight after being forced to watch the Detroit Red Wings and Columbus Blue Jackets clinch the final two playoff spots in the Eastern Conference last night – officially eliminating the Caps from the playoff chase. This is a major disappointment for a team with talent but defensive shortcomings and an inability to score goals. Alex Ovechkin failed to record a single point at even strength in the entire month of March with his damage coming via the power play. It just goes to show how one dimensional this team is offensively. If you shut down Washington’s power play, you can beat them. The Capitals thought acquiring Jaroslav Halak at the trade deadline would upgrade their goaltending but he has struggled mightily. I don’t expect Washington to bring a solid effort tonight playing their first game since being eliminated from the postseason. It has been a tough season for the Carolina Hurricanes, one filled with inconsistency and key injuries but the Canes continue to play hard. They were eliminated Read more

Philadelphia -165 at Florida O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Under

As we come upon the last 6 days of the NHL regular season, most of the "must win" teams are priced heavily with juice.  I don't mind laying juice now and then as long as I feel I'm getting value.  As most of my clients and followers know, I play the majority of my NHL totals Under and last night all three games easily cashed with a combined five goals scored in those games!  Hockey is a difficult sport for the books since the totals can really only be one of three choices 5, 5.5, or 6.  The amount of juice they attach to the total is where they try and make up for their deficiencies, but even then we find lots of value in say taking the Under 5.5 -145 instead of Under 5 +110.  Five is such a key number that getting that hook when you have the Under is sometimes worth .50 to .60 cents in my opinion.  Most professional handicappers would scoff at laying that kind of juice on a total, but in the NHL it is how I've grinded out profits for years.

With all that being said, we find lots of value in tonight's Flyers and Panthers Under.  -125 is Read more

Dallas at Washington -115 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Washington

The smell of playoff hockey is in the air as teams stare down the last 6-8 games in the regular season.  Despite what always appears to be a log jam in the standings come this time of year, we see that only a couple teams are legitimately fighting for the last playoff spots.  In the Eastern Conference there are eight teams fighting for four spots (Detroit, NY Rangers, Philadelphia, Columbus, Washington, Toronto, New Jersey, and Ottawa).  It really comes down to Columbus, Washington, Toronto, New Jersey, and Ottawa in my estimation.  The other teams have separated themselves enough to control their own destiny.

In the Western Conference we see much of the same as the top teams (St. Louis, Anaheim, Chicago, San Jose, and Colorado) have already clinched playoff berths.  The Los Angeles Kings are in that group as well with one more win needed to secure a playoff spot and Minnesota having a big enough lead for me to send them into the postseason.  That leaves just one spot open in the Western Conference with Phoenix and Dallas battling it out for all the Read more

Detroit -105 at Toronto O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Detroit

The Toronto Maple Leafs appeared to be a lock to make the playoffs but they have unraveled over the past two weeks and now find themselves in trouble. The enter tonight’s critical showdown vs. Detroit riding a 7-game losing streak; both teams are tied for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Mistakes and slow starts have plagued Toronto during their skid. They’ve taken bad penalties which they have been unable to kill. They’ve coughed up the puck in bad areas of the ice resulting in quality scoring chances and sometimes goals for the other team. And they have routinely been outplayed and outshot especially at the start of games. Even though they had a better effort last night against the Flyers, it was those same mental errors that cost them in a 4-2 loss. They are at a situational disadvantage here as the Red Wings have been waiting in Toronto since playing on Thursday night while the Leafs are playing the second of back-to-back games. The Red Wings have gone 0-2-1 in their last three games but they lost all three games by a combined 4 goals and have been Read more
