Boston -140 at Detroit O/U 5
Recommendation: Boston

Boston heads to Detroit tonight with the series knotted up at one game apiece. The Bruins played their typical grind it out game throughout Game 1, but couldn't seem to break through offensively.  It took a great individual effort from Detroit's Pavel Datsyuk late in the third period to get the Red Wings the 1-0 win.  Game 2 was much different as Boston was able to take advantage of its chances and put some goals on the board.  They went to the net hard and they were rewarded.  They didn't deviate from their plan and they stifled Detroit's offense once again allowing just one goal in a 4-1 win. Detroit's home ice advantage has been virtually nonexistent the past two seasons as they were a meager 18-13-10 at Joe Louis this regular season and just 4-4 over the past two postseason. Boston owned the best road record in the Eastern Conference this season at 23-12-6 and in the past three postseason the Bruins are 6-3 away from home in the first round.  Going into Detroit will be just another day at the job for the big bad Bruins.  Boston has the confidence and swagger back Read more

Tampa Bay (Odorizzi) at Baltimore -105 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Over

Tampa Bay and Baltimore get together tonight for their second game of the series.  Last night saw the Orioles lay the lumber on young Tampa Bay starter Chris Archer.  The O's strung together 12 hits over his five innings and the result could have been much worse than the 7-1 final.  Baltimore has been swinging the bat well to start the season as they are second in the AL with 121 hits, but their main problem has been discipline at the plate.  They should be able to see plenty of pitches tonight from Rays starter Jake Odorizzi.  Odorizzi had a terrible outing in Kansas City last week giving up 10 hits and 7 earned runs in just 5 innings.  He's struggled to find the plate in both his starts averaging over 17 pitches per inning.  Baltimore counters with Miguel Gonzalez on the mound who hasn't been much better.  In fact Gonzalez has given up 10 earned runs already in just his 9.1 Read more

Philadelphia -165 at Florida O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Under

As we come upon the last 6 days of the NHL regular season, most of the "must win" teams are priced heavily with juice.  I don't mind laying juice now and then as long as I feel I'm getting value.  As most of my clients and followers know, I play the majority of my NHL totals Under and last night all three games easily cashed with a combined five goals scored in those games!  Hockey is a difficult sport for the books since the totals can really only be one of three choices 5, 5.5, or 6.  The amount of juice they attach to the total is where they try and make up for their deficiencies, but even then we find lots of value in say taking the Under 5.5 -145 instead of Under 5 +110.  Five is such a key number that getting that hook when you have the Under is sometimes worth .50 to .60 cents in my opinion.  Most professional handicappers would scoff at laying that kind of juice on a total, but in the NHL it is how I've grinded out profits for years.

With all that being said, we find lots of value in tonight's Flyers and Panthers Under.  -125 is Read more

Dallas at Washington -115 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Washington

The smell of playoff hockey is in the air as teams stare down the last 6-8 games in the regular season.  Despite what always appears to be a log jam in the standings come this time of year, we see that only a couple teams are legitimately fighting for the last playoff spots.  In the Eastern Conference there are eight teams fighting for four spots (Detroit, NY Rangers, Philadelphia, Columbus, Washington, Toronto, New Jersey, and Ottawa).  It really comes down to Columbus, Washington, Toronto, New Jersey, and Ottawa in my estimation.  The other teams have separated themselves enough to control their own destiny.

In the Western Conference we see much of the same as the top teams (St. Louis, Anaheim, Chicago, San Jose, and Colorado) have already clinched playoff berths.  The Los Angeles Kings are in that group as well with one more win needed to secure a playoff spot and Minnesota having a big enough lead for me to send them into the postseason.  That leaves just one spot open in the Western Conference with Phoenix and Dallas battling it out for all the Read more

Colorado Rockies Season O/U Wins
Recommendation: Over 76.5

All of the talk in the National League West has undoubtedly centered on the Los Angeles Dodgers contending for a World Series title and the San Francisco Giants bouncing back after last year’s 76-win campaign.  The Colorado Rockies (74-88) meanwhile are lined as the worst team in the division and while there are plenty of holes, I see upside with this squad as well as value with the price. This is a .500 ball club when Troy Tulowitzki, Carlos Gonzalez, and the pitching staff are healthy.  Tulowitzki played in only 126 games last season while CarGo was even less at 110. Their starting pitchers are not the envy of most teams, but if guys like Brett Anderson can stay healthy and Juan Nicasio can pitch to his potential they will get more than their share of wins.  Nicasio has been the wildcard in their rotation for some time and with his fastball improved during spring training we could see big results. The addition of Anderson, coupled with Nicasio and Jorge De La Rosa, gives the Rockies three solid arms that while not as high profile as some of the aces in the division, Read more

Dallas at Chicago -205 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Under

I've mentioned this before on the podcasts and in writings about the Chicago Blackhawks; no team in the league endures more extended totals trends. The Blackhawks can beat you 6-5 or 2-1 and they seem to do it in bunches either way. Chicago has now played eight straight games under the total and I see no reason for an offensive explosion tonight against Dallas.  The loss of scoring sensation Patrick Kane has lowered scoring for the Blackhawks and made them focus more on defensive efforts to win games. Dallas is coming off of a tough 2-1 victory against Winnipeg and appear happy with their efforts the past two contests following a four-game losing streak.  Forward Tyler Seguin said, "We're just trying to find a way to win games, we had a tough stretch there a few games ago. We just want to walk away every night being the most competitive team."  Competitive teams play a tight checking style as seen by the Stars’ last two games going under the total. This is a very important game for both teams as we near the end of the regular season.  I expect a defensive battle Read more

Minnesota -120 at NY Islanders O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Under

Anytime you see a total of 5.5 in a Minnesota Wild game you must really look hard at the Under.  Minnesota comes onto Long Island tonight to face the Islanders in a situation where they must right their ship heading into the final playoff push.  Last night in Boston the Wild fell 4-1 to the Bruins marking their fifth loss in six games.  Playing the tail end of a back-to-back for Minnesota has been an Under bettor's dream as they are 5-1-3 in this situation – only once in those nine games did the teams combine for more than five goals.  In fact, the Wild have seen totals of 5.5 eight times this entire year with the Under going 6-2 in those contests.  These two teams met earlier in the year and went Over the total of 5, but this is a very different situation tonight.  New York is without the majority of its offense with John Tavares finished for the season and the loss of Matt Moulson to the Wild at the trade deadline.  We are nearing the final weeks of the NHL season and teams are starting to tighten up.  I expect a well-disciplined road game Read more

Detroit +115 at Columbus O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Detroit

Columbus travels home in what was supposed to be a back-to-back situation for them.  Instead the Blue Jackets played a little over six minutes in last night’s game at Dallas before a medical emergency was declared and the game postponed. Dallas forward Rich Peverley collapsed on the bench with an irregular heartbeat and was saved by doctors before heading to the hospital.  Both teams were visibly shaken and the NHL decided not to continue the game.  Columbus boarded their plane and headed home with no doubt heavy hearts and drained emotions.  Detroit has been waiting to redeem themselves after a 3-0 loss to the NY Rangers on Sunday afternoon.  Detroit has gone 3-3 since the Olympic break without their star forward Pavel Datsyuk.  The Red Wings and Blue Jackets are in a dog fight for the last Eastern Conference playoff spots and I expect nothing less than a full 60 minute effort from the road side.  One has to wonder if Columbus left their minds back in Dallas last night.  At a plus price it is easy for me to back the Red Wings in a spot where Read more

Tampa Bay at St. Louis -180 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Under

Much has been made of the blockbuster trade that sent Buffalo Sabres goalie Ryan Miller to the Stanley Cup contending St. Louis Blues and rightfully so.  Miller is the type of goalie that can carry a team on his back deep into the playoffs.  Put him on a defensive minded team that is third in the league in GAA at 2.27 and the Blues are the favorites in the Western Conference at this point.  Miller took one game to settle into his role with the new club as the Blues came back to beat the Phoenix Coyotes 4-2 on Sunday night.  I fully expect Miller to get the start on Tuesday night and for him to get the bulk of the starts as the new #1 moving forward.  This is not just a play on the Blues feeling more comfortable with Miller in net or Miller winning this game on his own; Tampa Bay has been involved in many low scoring games away from home this season (5.06 goals per game). The Lightning will be playing their third road game in four nights and I look for them to try and keep it very simple against the more talented and deep Bluee. Teams seem to be settling down Read more
