Mountain West Conference Tournament Odds: UNLV hosts, SDSU earns No. 1 seed

03.05.2012     12:23 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Mountain West Conference Tournament odds courtesy of The Greek. The event kicks off on Thursday at Las Vegas' Thomas & Mack Center. Since 2007, there have been three No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchups. No seed below No. 4 has made the finals since 2006 when No. 7 Wyoming lost to No. 1 San Diego State. That also marked the last time a No. 1 seed won the tournament with No. 2 winning four times and No. 4 once. Interesting that the No. 6 seed has upset the No. 3 seed three of the last five years. Despite hosting the tournament over the last few years, UNLV is 3-3 SU and 2-4 ATS its last four games.

Mountain West Tournament Odds
UNLV +125
San Diego State +175
New Mexico +200
Colorado State +1000
Wyoming +1500
Field (TCU, Boise, Air Force) +800

Matchups
Thursday
#1 San Diego State vs. #8 Boise State
#2 New Mexico vs. #7 Air Force
#3 UNLV vs. #6 Wyoming
#4 Colorado State vs. #5 TCU

Who has what it takes to win the 2012 National Championship Part II

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In Part I of this article last week, I took a basic look at the profile of the past 14 NCAA champions. From that profile, I was able to make a short list of potential champs in 2012, consisting of the following 14 teams: Duke, North Carolina, Syracuse, Marquette, Georgetown, Louisville, Michigan State, Ohio State, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Baylor, Kentucky and Florida.

I’ll wager dollars to donuts that the 2012 champion is one of these teams. The next step, of course, is to eliminate teams one by one, slowly but surely working our way towards the eventual national champ.

The first step in the elimination process is to look at the team’s records away from home. The NCAA championship is not won on a team’s home floor. Even with a favorable location one weekend, a team is still going to have to win four ‘neutral site’ games in order to cut down the nets in New Orleans on the first Monday in April. And the best predictive evidence for future Read more

NCAA Basketball Gambing: Drexel and VCU meet for CAA Championship

Drexel vs. VCU

VCU and Drexel meet in tonight's Colonial Athletic Association Championship in Richmond, Va. The two teams met once during the regular season with Drexel winning at home 64-58 as a 1-point underdog. VCU shot 9-of-20, 45% from the free throw line in the loss. After starting the season 2-4, Drexel has won 25 of 26. VCU has won 16 of 17. The loser of this game will likely be put squarely on the NCAA Tournament bubble.

College Basketball Betting News and Notes 3-4-2012

03.04.2012     08:31 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Here are some news and notes for Sunday's college basketball action.

Purdue's 78-61 loss to Indiana back on February 4 has served as a turning point with the team going 5-2 since and playing itself into position for a postseason berth.

"I just got tired of begging people to play hard,'' said Painter, who was openly critical of the Boilermakers' effort after that game. "If you're not going to play hard, we're going to play other guys. That's just the way it is."

Florida tries to keep Kentucky from a perfect SEC season. The Gators lost a Rupp Arena 78-58 back on February 7.

NCAA Basketball Betting Update: Missouri Valley Tournament now 1-5 Over/Under

03.03.2012     07:52 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

How tight are the rims at St. Louis' Scotttrade Center you ask? So much so that a fan received a black eye from an errant three-point shot during the Northern Iowa-Illinois State game. We made that up but the tight rims and historical nature of the Missouri Valley has UNDERS cashing at and almost comical rate. Last night's final game between Missouri State and Evansville snapped a 14-game streak of UNDERS at the MVC Tournament dating back the last two years. And note that these games are going under despite some very significant line moves.

First Round
Southern Illinois-Indiana State O/U 124
Final Game Score: 117 UNDER

Bradley-Drake O/U 126.5
Final Game Score: 114 UNDER

Quarterfinals
Indiana State-Wichita State O/U 131
Final Game Score: 120 UNDER

Drake-Creighton O/U 137.5
Final Game Score: 129 UNDER

Northern Iowa-Illinois State O/U 123
Final Game Score: 96 UNDER

Missouri State-Evansville O/U 128.5

Wyoming at UNLV -10.5 O/U 127
Recommendation: Over

In the war against meaningless games, scoring often wins out and that is where we will look for tonight’s UNLV-Wyoming matchup. While UNLV may apply on-ball pressure, after a few extra passes this defense is very susceptible. Just look what took place at Colorado State – the Rams just wore UNLV down with 40 points in the second half. Wyoming isn't that type of team but they'll get more that their fair share of open looks. As for UNLV's offense, we can certainly expect bigger things (it's Senior Night!) than what we saw in Fort Collins with a season long average of 82.8 ppg at the Thomas & Mack Center. The first time these two teams met, Wyoming was for the most part able to control tempo with only 63 possessions but the game still got to 134 points. These two teams could very well face one another in the opening round of the Mountain West Tournament which has Read more
