College Football Handicapping: Oklahoma make tone down up-tempo with new QB

07.24.2013     07:42 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
We could see a more controlled pace out of the Oklahoma Sooners this season with quarterback Blake Bell the leading candidate to take over for Landry Jones. Despite being noted for its up-tempo play, over the last four seasons OU has trended OVER the total only once (7-5 O/U in 2012). Combined they went 23-29 O/U.

“Well, it’s something to consider, definitely, how fast you are going, how effective it is, how it is affecting the defense? So it’s something to look at,” Stoops said. “There is a lot of experience back. The one thing I think, no matter who the quarterback is, there’s a lot of experience around the quarterback — three senior running backs, an experienced receiver corps, experienced line.

“So hopefully we can stay on the field, eat some clock. Even if we are going no-huddle sometimes, there’s opportunity to still use up some of the clock.”

College Football Gambling: Eastern Michigan's English to also serve as defensive coordinator

07.23.2013     01:30 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
In the final year of his contract, Eastern Michigan head coach Ron English will pull double duty and serve as the team's defensive coordinator. Defense has obviously been a sore spot for the Eagles under English. Last season the unit ranked 115th nationally in yards per game allowed (478.9). EMU is slated to return five defensive starters.

Points Per Game Allowed Under English, MAC Rank
2009 - 38.3 ppg, 13th
2010 - 43.9 ppg, 13th
2011 - 24.3 ppg, 4th
2012 - 37.6 ppg, 12th

“I can’t find a better one,” English said today at MAC football media day. “I enjoy the challenge. I want to see if I’m still good at it. We’ll play fast. We’ll be strong. We’ll be physical.”

College Football Betting: Former BYU QB Jake Heaps steps in at Kansas

07.23.2013     07:45 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
After the Dayne Crist experiment failed miserably, second-year head coach Charlie Weis is hoping former BYU quarterback Jake Heaps can kick start the Kansas offense. In two seasons in Provo, Heaps threw for 3,768 yards with 24 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. He spent last season with the scout team. The Jayhawks were one of only two teams (UMass) to post a QB rating below 100 in 2012.

“The problem I have, is that was the same thing we went through with Dayne Crist last year,” Weis said. “So Dayne comes walking in the door — and though I do not put the situations the same — one of the problems was, as bad as we were last year … people had this idea that ‘this kid’s gonna be the savior.’ And maybe I’m partially guilty for people feeling that way.”

“I’m not saying I’m trying to lower the expectations,” Weis said. “I expect us to be significantly improved at the quarterback position, which gives us a better chance to compete and win more games in the Read more

College Football Gambling: Maryland's offense primed for improvement

07.23.2013     06:31 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Remember last year when Maryland was so depleted at the quarterback position it was forced to start a linebacker? Things look significantly better heading into fall camp with CJ Brown back after a torn ACL as well as Perry Hills and Caleb Rowe who both saw time as freshmen. Brown's ability to run (574 yards, 7.27 ypc in 2011) would certainly help and offense that averaged only 103 ypg on the ground last season.  Overall, things set up well for the Terps' offense in 2013. Their top nine rushers from a year ago were underclassmen. All three quarterbacks were freshmen. And their top two pass catchers were also underclassmen. They also return three starters along the offensive line. Not a stretch to assume Maryland will improve on last season's 20.1 ppg.

College Football Gambling: Kentucky to test the waters with Brown's up-tempo offense

07.22.2013     01:43 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
The theme of SEC Media Days was up-tempo offenses and whether or not they put players at a higher risk for injury. With so many teams having success playing up-tempo it’s doubtful that we'll see a change in philosophy anytime soon. But with Kentucky going from a conservative and slow-paced 65.8 plays per game in 2012 to first-year offensive coordinator Neal Brown’s high-octane offense, it will be interesting to see if the Wildcats can survive in the SEC with sub-par personnel and depth. More offensive plays mean more plays/possessions for a defense that allowed 36.4 ppg in league play. New head coach Mark Stoops has a strong defensive pedigree having served as Florida State's DC from 2010-12 and Brown's offenses have rarely had a problem scoring. On the surface, most bettors would agree that those two are an upgrade. But the SEC is a completely different animal and in UK’s case, faster may not be better in 2013.

"We really strive to be the fastest-playing offense in the country," Brown said in a story on Texas Tech's Read more

College Football Handicapping: Additional official could allow Big XII teams to play faster

07.22.2013     01:04 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
According to reports, the Big XII plans on adding an extra official this season for the purpose of spotting the ball quicker after the end of a play. Oklahoma State, who is no stranger to up-tempo play, welcomes the addition. Baylor, OSU, Oklahoma, and West Virginia all ran over 1,000 offense plays during their 13-game schedules last season.

“The majority of the teams are playing up tempo, and the game changes over time,” said OSU coach Mike Gundy. “They added an official years ago because of more forward passes, I believe. They had to have an official to where they could see down the field more because people start throwing more passes.

“Well, now a number of teams are up tempo. And this allows the officials to get the ball set where an offense can play and a defense can play, and they can still officiate the game.

“What that does, it allows one person to get the ball and get it set and get out of the way, instead of a person trying to do that and also look at what he’s supposed to be Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Tips on how to bet post-All-Star break MLB

Submitted by Teddy Covers blog entry.
I wrote a similar article to this one last year at this time.  At the risk of plagiarizing myself, I thought many of the points I made last year are still extremely pertinent when it comes to post All-Star break baseball in 2013.

NFL training camps open up around the country this week.  The start of fall practice for college football isn’t far behind.  Wiseguy bettors are spending a good portion of their time focusing on football right now.  We’ve got a maturing NFL Season win total marketplace, both here in Vegas and offshore.  Odds to win the NFL Divisions are up.  Week 1 numbers are available at multiple sportsbooks.  College football season win totals are up as are odds to win the various conferences.

So what happens when the betting markets shift their focus towards football?  After all, we’re less than a week out from the All Star break, with more than two full months of regular season baseball still to play.  There isn’t a team in either league that has completed more than 100 games of their 162-game schedule as I write this.

Yet any sportsbook director in town will tell Read more

College Football Gambling: Colorado already having QB issues

07.22.2013     08:50 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
When trying to rebuild a program it typically helps to have at least some stability at the quarterback position. There doesn't look to be much of that for Colorado who finished near the bottom nationally in nearly every passing category last season. The storyline this summer has been the loss of three signal callers including last year's starter Jordan Webb who tore his ACL during the spring. The de facto starter looks to be Connor Wood who started one game last season. Back-up Joe Dorman was the only other active QB to practice during the spring.

College Football Betting: Auburn's season hinges on quarterback play

07.22.2013     08:33 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Nowhere to go but up for Auburn's offense after finishing dead last in the SEC in total offense (305 ypg) last season. Gene Chizik was shown the door and Gus Malzahn was brought back after a successful one-year stint at Arkansas State. Malzahn brought with him offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee who recently said the team would name a starting quarterback by mid-August. As of now it's a four-man race between returnees Jonathan Wallace, Kiehl Frazier, and newcomers Jeremy Johnson and Nick Marshall.

"There's no cutoff line," Lashlee said Friday morning. "We have in our mind a date that, hey, we'd like to know by now, or be pretty quick. As quick as we can make that decision, we're going to make it. When it becomes evident that this is the individual who needs to lead our football team and gives us a best chance to win, I don't think you wait. I think you make that call, and you give your team as much time leading up to that first game as you can to develop continuity, get them all the reps with the right Read more

College Football Betting: Take a closer look at home field advantage

07.13.2013     07:27 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Submitted by Stat Intelligence

When I ran an early estimate of market ratings for college football a few weeks ago, I noted that I generally use a standard 3 points for home field advantage, just like I do in the NFL. A few people have asked me about that, the most recent being by way of twitter early today when @BigDings asked “Shouldn’t HFA be different for a lot of teams, and not always just a standard three points?”

There are different schools of thought about this. And those schools have some contempt for each other. In a nutshell:

*One school says that OBVIOUSLY some teams enjoy much bigger home field advantages than others, so you should account for that in your process. Teams with bigger home field edges should get 4 or even 5 points. Teams who gain little advantage could get as little as 0 or even 1 if they don’t have much talent and don’t draw home Read more
