College Football Betting Preview: Auburn Tigers at LSU Tigers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Auburn at LSU
Saturday, 4:45 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
LSU -14 O/U 57
CRIS Current: LSU -16.5 O/U 55
Rob Veno's Power Rating: LSU -19
Brent Crow's Recommendation: LSU

Auburn has used a very favorable schedule to get off to a 3-0 start under first-year head coach Gus Mahlzan. The Tigers’ victories have come against Washington State, Arkansas State and Mississippi State; none of which are anywhere near the class of this week’s opponent. The fast start has calmed down the Auburn fans after last year’s disaster under Gene Chizik. While three wins is definitely better than three losses, I am not sure there is much difference between this year’s team and last year’s group. The defense is still a big question mark as Auburn has allowed at least 400 yards of offense in all three wins to offenses that have been subpar otherwise. They were able to force three turnovers against Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Arizona State Sun Devils at Stanford Cardinal

Arizona State at Stanford
Saturday, 4 pm PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
Stanford -6.5 O/U 52
CRIS Current: Stanford -5.5 O/U 51
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Stanford -11
Rob Veno's Recommendation: Over 1st Half

It was good for the Sun Devils to play Wisconsin last week since the Badgers are a near mirror image of Stanford offensively. ASU’s defense had to deal with the power style rushing attack of Wisconsin and the subsequent play-action passing that goes with it. The problem is, Arizona State didn’t fare all that well at stopping the Badgers who rolled to 441 total yards on 7.0 per play which included 232 rushing yards and 7.2 per carry. That’s a major problem as Todd Graham’s team leaves the cozy confines of Sun Devil Stadium for the first time this season to play at Stanford in their PAC-12 opener.

Another fundamental problem will likely be the Stanford defense which Read more

College Football Handicapping: Week 4 Injury Report

09.19.2013     11:44 AM     Brian Edwards     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Brian Edwards

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Texas QB David Ash remains a question mark (concussion) this week vs. Kansas State. In a 44-23 home loss to Ole Miss, back-up Case McCoy completed 24-of-36 passes for 196 yards and one TD without an interception.  Also, the Longhorns’ best WR Mike Davis is questionable due to a sprained ankle. Davis has hauled in 20 catches for 222 yards and four TDs in just three games.

Mississippi State senior quarterback Tyler Russell is doubtful for Saturday’s home game vs. Troy. Russell threw for 2,897 yards with a 24-to-10 touchdown-to-interception ratio last season, but he might have a difficult time getting his starting job back. In his absence, Dak Prescott has played well. Prescott provides more of a running dimension, rushing for 134 yards and two touchdowns in last week’s heartbreaking loss at Auburn. He completed 15-of-28 passes for 213 yards on The Plains.

Minnesota quarterback Philip Nelson is questionable vs. San Jose due to a strained hamstring. Nelson is an excellent scrambler so a hamstring issue could diminish his effectiveness more than it would most other quarterbacks. He has rushed for 221 yards and three TDs in leading Read more

Sportsmemo Handicapper Rob Veno has been creating his own Power Ratings for nearly two decades. His numbers are very well respected and an excellent tool for discovering value. Rob’s PRs are a baseline and do not include key injuries or situations but they also don't overreact as much as the betting markets do week to week. Below is a chart of CRIS's current lines and Rob's College Football Power Ratings for Week 4.

College Football Betting: Alabama 3-point chalk vs. Oregon for BCS Championship

09.19.2013     07:49 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
According to Twitter, Las Vegas' Golden Nugget sportsbook posted Alabama -3 (-120) vs. Oregon should the two teams meet in the BCS National Championship. The Crimson Tide was -10 vs. Notre Dame in last year's tile game (42-14 win). The year before that they were -2.5 vs. LSU (21-0 win). The Ducks were 1-point chalk in their 22-19 BCS title game loss to Auburn in 2010.

College Football Betting: Will Wake Forest's under the total trend continue?

09.19.2013     07:10 AM     Rob Veno     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Rob Veno

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
For many teams across the nation, 25% of their season is already complete. Three weeks ago as fall practice sessions ended and teams began preparing for their season opening games, those of us who follow college football routinely had opinions set on all 126 FBS teams. Since teams only play 12 regular season games, the quarter pole has always been a time to proactively adjust to teams if need be or stay firm with initial judgments that were made. In this week’s article I’ll take a look at one team specifically from a totals perspective which has thus far performed differently than what the original outlook may have been.

It’s not that Wake Forest's schemes have turned into something we don’t associate with them. After all, this team has had the exact same on-field style for each of head coach Jim Grobe’s 12 seasons here. The difference right now is the extent to which their game scores have diminished. Through their first three games, Wake Forest totals have opened and closed as some of the lowest we’ve seen each week. To see closing totals of 51, 47.5 and 50 in this day and age can definitely be categorized as lower than average. Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Tennessee Volunteers at Florida Gators

Submitted by Brian Edwards

Tennessee at Florida
Saturday, 12:30 PT – CBS
CRIS Opener:
Florida -15.5 O/U 48
CRIS Current: Florida -16.5 O/U 47.5
Rob Veno’s Power Ranking: Florida -16.5
Brian Edwards’ Recommendation: Under

Florida will be seeking its ninth consecutive win over Tennessee when these bitter SEC East rivals square off Saturday at The Swamp in Gainesville.

Most books opened Florida (1-1 straight up, 0-2 against the spread) as a 14.5-point favorite Sunday night. However, by late Wednesday morning, most shops had the Gators favored by -17 with a total of 47.5. Gamblers can take the Volunteers on the money line for a +600 return (risk $100 to win $600).

Will Muschamp’s team has had two weeks to shake off a gut-wrenching 21-16 loss at Miami as a three-point road favorite. UF nearly doubled up the Hurricanes in total offense but went down nonetheless due to five turnovers, Read more

College Football Betting: Oregon State not willing to give up on ground attack

09.18.2013     07:55 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oregon State -11 at San Diego State O/U 54.5

Because of all their injuries along the offensive line, Oregon State has had a very difficult time running the football. Against Hawaii and Utah, the Beavers rushed 61 times but produced only 105 yards. According to offensive coordinator Danny Langsdorf despite the team's success throwing the football (1,316 yards, 12 TDs, 1 INT) they aren't going to give up on the run game just yet.

“When we’re not running the ball very well, you’re going to get a lot more coverage looks, tougher to throw the ball, more drop-eight,” offensive coordinator Danny Langsdorf said. “You’re going to get more guys in coverage taking away those receivers. If you can’t run the ball Read more
