Holiday Bowl Betting Preview: California Golden Bears vs. Texas Longhorns

Holiday Bowl
California vs. Texas
Wednesday, 5 pm PT
CRIS Opener: Texas -3 O/U 47
CRIS Current: Texas -4 O/U 47.5
Rob Veno Power Rating:  Texas -1.5

Marty Otto’s Betting Take: Cal has not produced many wins away from home over the past two seasons and I question whether they’ll get one here on Wednesday. The Golden Bears were lucky to sneak past Colorado early this season when on the highway, lost outright to Washington and Oregon in back-to-back weeks while traveling, got blasted by a bad UCLA team in Los Angeles, and couldn’t rebound from a 15-point deficit at Stanford. They did close with a win at Arizona State but that’s hardly worth hanging their hats on after the Sun Devils went 0-5 to finish the season.

While I like some of the individual pieces for Cal’s offense – Keenan Allen, Isi Sofele and Read more

Belk Bowl Betting Preview: Louisville Cardinals vs. NC State Wolfpack

Belk Bowl
Louisville vs. NC State
Tuesday, 7 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener: NC State -1.5 O/U 45.5
CRIS Current: NC State -1.5 O/U 44
Rob Veno Power: NC State pk

Erin Rynning's Betting Take: Positive momentum has been a popular theme in handicapping tonight’s Belk Bowl.  After a slow start, both Louisville and NC State were clearly playing their best football down the stretch.  The Cardinals were at one point 2-4 with losses to non-BCS Conference Marshall and Florida International but rallied to win five of their final six games.  One could argue there could be a letdown after the surge was good for a share of the Big East title but short of a BCS Bowl berth.  But I don’t feel that with head coach Charlie Strong in charge we’ll witness any massive letdown.  Strong has done a phenomenal job in two short years, Read more

Little Caesars Bowl Betting Preview: Western Michigan Broncos vs. Purdue Boilermakers

Little Caesars Bowl
Western Michigan vs. Purdue
Tuesday, 1:30 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener: Purdue -2.5 O/U 60
CRIS Current: Purdue -2.5 O/U 60

Teddy Covers’ Betting Take: Western Michigan has not stepped up in class well at any point during the Bill Cubit era. The Broncos entered the season in the midst of an 0-5 SU and ATS run against BCS conference competition. They did knock off one BCS foe this year – UConn – but the Huskies were not a bowl team and they scored 31points against Western Michigan’s defense, just shy of their season high.  The Broncos did not fare well against other bowl teams. They gave up 66 points in a loss to Toledo; 51 in a loss to Northern Illinois. Michigan and Illinois beat the Broncos by a combined margin of 57-30. Starting quarterback Alex Carder is expected to be fully healthy for this bowl game after missing Read more

Hawaii Bowl Betting News and Notes: Nevada vs. Southern Miss

Nevada vs. Southern Miss -8.5 O/U 63

News and notes for Saturday's Hawaii Bowl between Nevada and Southern Miss. Larry Fedora and staff have remained with the team despite Fedora recently inking a deal with North Carolina. USM hired South Carolina assistant Ellis Johnson some players and coaches preferred offensive coordinator Blake Anderson. Based on a few quotes, Fedora looks to be taking his final game seriously.

Nevada is hoping to avoid a repeat performance of the 2009 Hawaii Bowl when it lost to SMU 45-10. Head coach Chris Ault noted that his team is as healthy as it has been since Week 1 and that Southern Miss is better than any WAC team they've Read more

Independence Bowl Betting Preview: North Carolina Tar Heels vs. Missouri Tigers

Independence Bowl
Missouri vs. North Carolina
Monday, 1 pm PT - ESPN2
CRIS Opener: Missouri -3.5 O/U 53.5
CRIS Current: Missouri -5 O/U 53
Rob Veno Power Rating: Missouri -3

Rob Veno's Betting Take: This is a very intriguing matchup from many angles including motivational, fundamental, key personnel losses and recent bowl history. North Carolina would figure to play this game with great energy and emotion for well liked, interim head coach Everett Withers. But with Larry Fedora stepping in next season, Withers may be somewhat distracted having already landed a gig with Urban Meyer at Ohio State. Add to that the recent suspension of star wide receiver Dwight Jones (status up in the air now as UNC has asked the NCAA for re-instatement), and you have a pair of off-field disruptions less than a week before kickoff. Missouri meanwhile concluded Read more

College Football Gambling: List of bowl game suspensions

12.21.2011     07:29 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Consider this the Sportsmemo College Football Bowl Game Police Blotter. North Carolina's Dwight Jones wanted to celebrate his birthday but did so by sending out fliers with his picture on it. The NCAA apparently doesn't like that sort of thing and the Tar Heels are without 79 catches, 1,119 yards and 11 touchdowns. Iowa leading rusher Marcus Coker was suspended for unspecified rule violations. The team's second leading rusher has just 18 carries. TCU's No. 3 receiver Antoine Hicks won't play in the Poinsettia Bowl. If you've ever been to West Lafayette, Indiana, you already know that drinking and stealing stuff is pretty damn popular. So much so that a couple of Purdue players, including starting linebacker Dwayne Beckford, got suspended for it. Someone from Arizona State got suspended? You don't say. Sun Devils down a defensive starter. Georgia Tech suspended starting cornerback Louis Young. Oklahoma defensive end Ronnell Lewis (5.5 sacks, 13 TFLs) was suspended for the Insight Bowl. Auburn running back Michael Dyer was suspended as well.

NCAAF Betting Notes: Virginia Cavaliers giddy for postseason appearance

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Virginia vs. Auburn -2 O/U 49

As expected, motivation doesn't seem to be a problem for Virginia as it prepares for the Chick-fil-A Bowl against Auburn.

"Growing up this is something you dream of in playing on New Year’s Eve on National TV in Atlanta.  I mean that's just going to be an awesome experience for everyone,” said Linebacker Steve Greer.

"This game can't come quick enough.  I know our guys are real anxious right now to get back on the field and to kind of redeem ourselves from our previous loss,” said starting Quarterback Mike Rocco, a Liberty Christian Academy graduate.

"I’m looking forward to just running out of the tunnel, just representing Virginia for the last time against an SEC team.  On a stage like this it's definitely an honor,” said Hurd.

Las Vegas Bowl Betting Preview: Arizona State Sun Devils vs. Boise State Broncos

Las Vegas Bowl
Arizona State vs. Boise State
Thursday, 5 pm PT – ESPN
CRIS Opener: Boise State -11.5 O/U 65
CRIS Current: Boise State -14 O/U 66.5
Rob Veno Power Rating: Boise State -15.5

Andrew Lange’s Betting Take: I was talking with Teddy Covers on Tuesday's Sportsmemo Podcast and asked him that if we eliminate all of the distractions and potential motivational issues for this matchup, is Boise State truly two touchdowns better than Arizona State on a neutral field? The clear answer was no, but unfortunately, as with most pre-Christmas bowl games, all of the "extra" stuff can have an enormous impact. The fact that ASU didn't represent the PAC-12 South in the conference title game speaks volumes to how much this team underachieved this year. Heading into November, the Sun Devils were 6-2 with road loses to Oregon and Read more
