College Football Gambling: Nowhere to go but up for West Virginia's defense

08.06.2013     07:27 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Every bettor on the planet knows that West Virginia's defense was awful last season. And with only three returning starters on offense, the stop unit is going to need to improve if the Mountaineers plan on being competitive in the Big XII (lined at 6un-109 wins at Pinnacle). Keith Patterson will serve as the lone defensive coordinator after sharing duties last season. The stop unit returns seven starters but as Patterson noted, "having a lot of people back is not necessarily a good thing." The good news for WVU is that four of their first five conference foes will be breaking in a new quarterback (Oklahoma, Baylor, Kansas State, and Texas Tech). Those four teams combined for 1,676 passing yards and 54.3 ppg vs. WVU in 2012.

“(Defensive lineman Shaq) Rowell said he looks at the stats to remind him. He says it motivates him,” said returning cornerback Broderick Jenkins. “If it doesn’t motivate you, I don’t think you are in the right mode of thinking. If Read more

College Football Handicapping: Preseason Power Ratings

08.06.2013     06:42 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Submitted by Stat Intelligence

As most of you in the markets know, CRIS posted Week One lines for college football this past weekend. Those lines have had time to move…as sharp action has hit the offshore board. That’s helped solidify how “the market” sees the 2013 college football season in the days leading up to everyone’s openers.

I’ve used those “improved” lines (oddsmakers openers plus sharp influence) to update our first crack at estimated Power Ratings. First, I’ll run through the top 10 or so, which will give you a chance to compare them to preseason polls. Then, I’ll go through each board conference. Again, these aren’t how I would personally rate the teams. This is my guess at how “the market” as a composite has the teams rated on a standard Power Ratings scale. You regulars know that I typically stick “championship caliber” at 85 and work down from that. This year’s Alabama squad is seen as a bit better than Read more

The sports betting world reacts to potential suspension for Manziel

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Egads! Johnny Football suspended? You know what that means – hours of discussion about how much he's worth to the pointspread. The general consensus among a few Las Vegas oddsmakers is a full touchdown. A lot of sportsbooks aren't taking any chances as Texas A&M's Week 1 game against Rice has been taken off the board.

College Football Betting: CRIS posts Week 1 lines, rest of market reacts

08.05.2013     11:41 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Over the weekend, CRIS posted its Week 1 college football lines. For most bettors, CRIS's numbers are considered "ground zero" for the betting markets. Sportsbooks like BetOnline and 5Dimes will often times post early numbers with lower limits to drum up business, but once CRIS posts its lines, everyone else rushes to copy them. Below you can check out some of the discrepancies between 5Dimes (a fairly respected sportsbook) and CRIS (a very respected sportsbook). That doesn't mean that the numbers 5Dimes had prior to CRIS’s were "bad" nor does it mean CRIS's numbers are "good" – more than a few got hammered pretty hard. In fact, there were a couple instances where CRIS's opener moved towards 5Dimes' original number – before of course they copied CRIS. We're just illustrating the point that when it comes to football numbers offshore, offscreen, and Las Vegas, CRIS drives the market.

CRIS Opener: Bowling Green -3 vs. Tulsa
5Dimes Opener: Tulsa -1 at Bowling Green

CRIS Opener: Texas Tech -7 at SMU
5Dimes Opener: Texas Tech -4 at SMU

CRIS Opener: Michigan -34.5 vs. Central Michigan

College Football Gambling: Cameron ditches NFL for LSU offensive coordinator gig

08.05.2013     11:19 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Despite all their success it's been a long time since LSU had an above average passing attack. There was more production last season (200.5 ypg) but the team's QB Rating ranked 79th nationally. Quarterback Zach Mettenberger has a full season under his belt though there was a change at offensive coordinator with Cam Cameron stepping in for Greg Studrawa. Cameron was abruptly fired from the Baltimore Ravens during the 2012 regular season. There reportedly won't be an overhaul to LSU's offense – power rushing, quick-hitter passing game. Cameron's last college gig was as head coach at Indiana from 1997-2001.

Year - SEC Rank, Passing Yards Per Game
2012 - 11th, 200.5 ypg
2011 - 10th, 152.2 ypg
2010 - 12th, 155.6 ypg
2009 - 9th,  181.8 ypg

“We’ve always wanted to be a balanced team,” head coach Les Miles said. “Cam has certainly allowed us to do that more. I think he throws the ball down the field extremely well. I think those are things you’ll see in the offense as we go Read more

College Football Betting: Former Florida State OC takes same position at Miami

08.05.2013     10:59 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article on Miami Hurricanes first-year offensive coordinator James Coley. Coley, who is noted for being an excellent recruiter, held the same position at Florida State but head coach Jimbo Fisher called the plays.

“It wasn’t frustrating,” Coley said of his FSU career. “I knew when I took that job the head coach was the play-caller. I have a great relationship with Jimbo. Calling the plays is his passion.”

“We’ll be multiple: spread, fullback, one or two tight ends, four receivers. … And tempo meaning we’re in a no-huddle mode and can go as fast as we want or as slow as we need.”

College Football Betting: Indiana sees up-tempo as key vs. Big Ten

08.02.2013     01:15 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Not every team in the Big Ten likes to play at a pedestrian pace and grind out games. Indiana and Penn State ranked in the top 25 nationally in terms of plays per game last season. In Kevin Wilson's second season, the Hoosiers ranked second in the Big Ten in yards per game (442.0). According to Wilson, playing up-tempo is the best way to level the playing field against the rest of the conference.

"We understand that when we substitute, the referee gives the other team a chance to match that substitution," he said. "We also understand that when we don't substitute, we can go fast. I believe in playing fast. I believe in different tempos."

"Fans want to see points," Wilson said. "With HD TV, every league and the professionals, everyone’s worried about fan experience. Great defense, you want it, I don’t think every game’s gotta be a 42-40 shootout, but I don't think anybody wants a 1-0 shutout. I don’t think we're playing 7-3 football."
