College Football Gambling: Texas' offensive line takes big hit

09.03.2014     11:28 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Not only will the Texas Longhorns be without quarterback David Ash (concussion) but the anchor of the offensive line, Dominic Espinosa (ankle), is also out indefinitely. Espinosa's injury now makes Texas on of the youngest and least experiences offensive lines in the country. Good article from burntorangenation.com on what to expect with UT's o-line moving forward. Still no widely available line on Saturday's game vs. BYU.

When Phil Steele released his annual list of the most experienced offensive lines around the nation this summer, the Horns were tied for No. 87 in the country with only 49 starts, most of them belonging to Espinosa.

Combined, the group would now rank No. 127 in the country in experience, in front of only Tennessee, which boasted six starts heading into the season.

College Football Betting Preview: Michigan Wolverines at Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Michigan at Notre Dame
Saturday, 4:30 pm PT - NBC
CRIS Opener:
Notre Dame -4.5 O/U 54.5
CRIS Current: Notre Dame -3.5 O/U 56
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Notre Dame -4
Teddy Covers' Recommendation: Over

Michigan has won and covered four of the last five meetings between these two teams, taking control of what had been a very competitive series in recent seasons.   In fact, prior to the Wolverines recent success, the taking the underdog plus the points had been the prevailing theme, winning outright in nine of the previous 12 meetings.   And, of course, with Michigan catching points in South Bend on Saturday, the trends clearly point towards the Wolverines as live underdogs here.

The Wolverines went through an ugly 0-5 SU and ATS run as an underdog heading into last November, but they covered three straight in that role down the stretch last year, finally showing success Read more

Sportsmemo Handicapper Rob Veno has been creating his own Power Ratings for nearly two decades. His numbers are very well respected and an excellent tool for discovering value. Rob’s PRs are a baseline and do not include key injuries or situations but they also don't overreact as much as the betting markets do week to week. Below is a chart of CRIS's current lines and Rob's College Football Power Ratings for Week 2.

College Footbal Betting Preview: Kansas State Wildcats at Iowa State Cyclones

CRIS Current: Kansas State -12 O/U 57
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Kansas State -10
Rob Veno's Recommendation: Over

Not an ideal start to the season for Iowa State who was slapped at home by defending FCS champion North Dakota State. They also lost premier offensive threat, wide receiver Quenton Bundrage (ACL) for the season. Suspended wide receiver D’avario Montgomery will be back from a one game suspension and they have enough depth at the position to ease the loss. But the health of starting center Tom Farniok, who left last week’s game with a knee injury, should be monitored. Farniok has been the lynchpin this offense the past two seasons and the unit struggles mightily when he’s not on the field. He is expected to play at less than 100% this week and the Cyclones will have their Read more

College Football Gambling Update: Stave didn't play vs. LSU due to a bad shoulder

09.02.2014     02:50 PM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Where there's smoke, there's fire, right? Some bettors were probably wondering why last year's starter Joel Stave didn't take a snap vs. LSU. Here's your explanation. It turns out Stave had a bum shoulder and will be out for the foreseeable future. Redshirt Bart Houston will serve as Tanner McEvoy's backup.

"Joel has been dealing with some issues with his throwing shoulder for the last couple of weeks and we have come to a decision, after talking with Joel, that the best thing for him right now is to shut it down and give him some rest," Andersen said Tuesday.

"It was a tough decision because Joel is a great competitor and has a tremendous desire to help this team," he added. "We will continue to monitor his progress, but we're not putting a timetable on his return at this time."

College Football Gambling: Wisconsin has a quarterback problem

09.02.2014     01:58 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Concerns about Wisconsin's quarterback situation following Saturday's second half meltdown vs. LSU. First-year starter Tanner McEvoy threw for only 50 yards on 8-of-24 passes. It raises the question should the Badgers revert back to last year's vanilla-but-for-the-most-part-effective starter, Joel Stave. Head coach Gary Andersen said both will undoubtedly be used throughout the year. UW plays host to FCS Western Illinois this weekend.

“We need two quarterbacks. Sooner or later, you’re going to have them both. Tanner’s the starter today, but Joel’s going to fight like crazy to get some reps and if there’s an opportunity that presents itself for Joel to be able to come in and play, then so be it.”

“Do we need better play (at quarterback)? Absolutely. Nobody’s going to sit there and debate that. We need better play out of the quarterback. We need better play in the throw game, period. There’s some

College Football Gambling News: Saban pleased with Kiffin's first game as OC

09.02.2014     07:35 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Alabama racked up 538 yards but settled for four field goals in Saturday's 33-22 win over West Virginia. It was offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin's debut for the Crimson Tide and Nick Saban wants everyone to know he "did a great job."

"You know, the guy is a really good coach now, all right," Saban said. "Y'all need to fess up to that. And most places that don't like him is because he left and they were mad because he left. They weren't mad about anything he did while he was there.  Just do a little research on that."

"Some people have a tremendous amount of knowledge, but you have to be able to articulate it to the players in a way they can understand it and it's simple for them to go out and execute it," Saban said earlier in the month. "Systematically, Lane does that with the players he coaches and with the entire offense, which I think is really, really important."
