College Football Handicapping: Additional official could allow Big XII teams to play faster

07.22.2013     01:04 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
According to reports, the Big XII plans on adding an extra official this season for the purpose of spotting the ball quicker after the end of a play. Oklahoma State, who is no stranger to up-tempo play, welcomes the addition. Baylor, OSU, Oklahoma, and West Virginia all ran over 1,000 offense plays during their 13-game schedules last season.

“The majority of the teams are playing up tempo, and the game changes over time,” said OSU coach Mike Gundy. “They added an official years ago because of more forward passes, I believe. They had to have an official to where they could see down the field more because people start throwing more passes.

“Well, now a number of teams are up tempo. And this allows the officials to get the ball set where an offense can play and a defense can play, and they can still officiate the game.

“What that does, it allows one person to get the ball and get it set and get out of the way, instead of a person trying to do that and also look at what he’s supposed to be Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Tips on how to bet post-All-Star break MLB

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
I wrote a similar article to this one last year at this time.  At the risk of plagiarizing myself, I thought many of the points I made last year are still extremely pertinent when it comes to post All-Star break baseball in 2013.

NFL training camps open up around the country this week.  The start of fall practice for college football isn’t far behind.  Wiseguy bettors are spending a good portion of their time focusing on football right now.  We’ve got a maturing NFL Season win total marketplace, both here in Vegas and offshore.  Odds to win the NFL Divisions are up.  Week 1 numbers are available at multiple sportsbooks.  College football season win totals are up as are odds to win the various conferences.

So what happens when the betting markets shift their focus towards football?  After all, we’re less than a week out from the All Star break, with more than two full months of regular season baseball still to play.  There isn’t a team in either league that has completed more than 100 games of their 162-game schedule as I write this.

Yet any sportsbook director in town will tell Read more

College Football Gambling: Colorado already having QB issues

07.22.2013     08:50 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
When trying to rebuild a program it typically helps to have at least some stability at the quarterback position. There doesn't look to be much of that for Colorado who finished near the bottom nationally in nearly every passing category last season. The storyline this summer has been the loss of three signal callers including last year's starter Jordan Webb who tore his ACL during the spring. The de facto starter looks to be Connor Wood who started one game last season. Back-up Joe Dorman was the only other active QB to practice during the spring.

College Football Betting: Auburn's season hinges on quarterback play

07.22.2013     08:33 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Nowhere to go but up for Auburn's offense after finishing dead last in the SEC in total offense (305 ypg) last season. Gene Chizik was shown the door and Gus Malzahn was brought back after a successful one-year stint at Arkansas State. Malzahn brought with him offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee who recently said the team would name a starting quarterback by mid-August. As of now it's a four-man race between returnees Jonathan Wallace, Kiehl Frazier, and newcomers Jeremy Johnson and Nick Marshall.

"There's no cutoff line," Lashlee said Friday morning. "We have in our mind a date that, hey, we'd like to know by now, or be pretty quick. As quick as we can make that decision, we're going to make it. When it becomes evident that this is the individual who needs to lead our football team and gives us a best chance to win, I don't think you wait. I think you make that call, and you give your team as much time leading up to that first game as you can to develop continuity, get them all the reps with the right Read more

College Football Betting: Mountain West Conference preview

Mountain West Conference Preview

Quarterback Driven League: The starting quarterback play in this conference is as deep and as talented as it has ever been. Returnees Derek Carr (Fresno State), David Fales (San Jose State), Cody Fajardo (Nevada), Chuckie Keeton (Utah State), Brett Smith (Wyoming), Nick Sherry (U.N.L.V.) Joe Southwick (Boise State) and Conner Smith all figure to either equal or increase their team’s offensive production of last season.

New Head Coaches: Nevada, San Jose State and Utah State will all have new head coaches this season. Utah State promoted from within as last season’s OC Matt Wells takes over and their transition should be seamless. The schemes remain in pace on each side of the ball and play during the spring practice session drew solid reviews from HC Wells. While the base systems will remain the same, the coordinators are new. OC Kevin McGiven was the OC at Montana State LY while DC Todd Orlando held the same position at Florida international LY.

At Nevada, Brian Polian takes over for Wolfpack legendary HC Chris Ault. Read more

College Football Betting: Take a closer look at home field advantage

07.13.2013     07:27 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Submitted by Stat Intelligence

When I ran an early estimate of market ratings for college football a few weeks ago, I noted that I generally use a standard 3 points for home field advantage, just like I do in the NFL. A few people have asked me about that, the most recent being by way of twitter early today when @BigDings asked “Shouldn’t HFA be different for a lot of teams, and not always just a standard three points?”

There are different schools of thought about this. And those schools have some contempt for each other. In a nutshell:

*One school says that OBVIOUSLY some teams enjoy much bigger home field advantages than others, so you should account for that in your process. Teams with bigger home field edges should get 4 or even 5 points. Teams who gain little advantage could get as little as 0 or even 1 if they don’t have much talent and don’t draw home Read more

College Football Gambling: With Golson out, Notre Dame goes with 2011 starter Rees

07.11.2013     01:31 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Notre Dame second-year offensive coordinator Chuck Martin discusses the team's quarterback situation. With Everett Golson out for at least a year, the Irish will go revert back to Tommy Rees who started for much of the 2011 season (2,871 yards, 65.5%, 20 TDs, 14 INTs) and played last year when Golson was injured.

“We can definitely develop in some areas,” Martin told Blue & Gold. “You’re in the second year with this offensive staff intact and the kids kind of get what’s going on, so there’s going to be some growth. There were some things we would have liked to do last year; we just couldn’t do them, or weren’t ready to do them.”

College Football Handicapping: Big XII league play schedule breakdown

07.11.2013     07:42 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
On yesterday's Sportsmemo Podcast, handicapper Rob Veno gave his initial thoughts and opinions on the Big XII (listen here). Rob noted that because of the 10-team format, team plays nine conference games, meaning some will play five home games while others will obviously play only four. Note that Texas vs. Oklahoma and Baylor vs. Texas Tech are neutral site games (thanks to "Crow" for the tip). Here's a quick breakdown of the splits.

Home: Baylor, West Virginia, Iowa State, TCU, Oklahoma
Road: Texas, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Kansas

Article on the Oklahoma Sooners starting over at the quarterback position after the departure of Landry Jones. It looks as if Blake Bell will get the starting nod after serving as a goal line specialist last season (11 TDs).

College Football Gambling: Wisconsin's Andersen wants more from QB

07.10.2013     01:03 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Interesting article about Wisconsin's quarterback situation and the plan of attack under first-year head coach Gary Andersen. Anderson is seeking more mobility from the position but it doesn't appear that Wisky will stray too far from the pro-style, power run game of old.

And you wonder if Stave, who does not possess a lot of mobility, will be the type of quarterback Andersen wants going forward. At Utah State the past two years, he started Chuckie Keeton after handing him the reins as a true freshman. Keeton ran for 618 yards and eight touchdowns last year for the Aggies.
