MLB Betting Preview: Cincinnati Reds at Washington Nationals

04.13.2012     10:49 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Cincinnati (Arroyo) at Washington (Zimmermann) -140 O/U 7
Recommendation: Washington

Washington’s momentum – taking two out of three in Chicago to open the season, then taking two out of three against the Mets prior to last night’s win over Cinci – is very real.  The Nationals are legitimate contenders; something they haven’t been at any point since the franchise left Montreal for Washington, DC.  The Nats refuse-to-lose attitude in early season play has been particularly impressive.  They’ve rallied from behind to win twice, and won twice (including yesterday’s affair) – on their final at-bat.

Cincinnati is on the other end of the positive momentum spectrum, dropping below .500 with yesterday’s defeat.  The Reds offense isn’t clicking at all right now, producing only eight runs in their last four games.  Starter Bronson Arroyo was lit up by the ice cold Marlins lineup in his debut last Read more

MLB Gambling Notes: San Francisco's Wilson not likely to pitch vs. Pittsburgh

04.13.2012     06:58 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Pittsburgh (McDonald) at San Francisco (Cain) -170 O/U 6.5

San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy is concerned with closer Brian Wilson after Wilson needed 32 pitches to record his first save of the season last night in Colorado. Wilson's velocity was down and he also turned his ankle. Bochy said he would prefer not to throw Wilson tonight.

MLB Betting Update: Seattle's Hernandez struggles with velocity and command

04.13.2012     06:48 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Oakland (Colon) at Seattle (Hernandez) -145 O/U 6.5

Update on Seattle's Felix Hernandez and his lack of velocity in the early going. Also a concern in his groundball-to-fly ball ratio. King Felix hasn't had a season with more fly balls than groundballs but through two starts he's allowed 28 fly balls to only 14 grounders.

The key for him to remain an elite starter will be figuring out how to keep getting the necessary sink and location to remain a ground ball pitcher, and use the secondary stuff to rack up the strikeouts. If he keeps pitching up in the zone like he did on Saturday, he might not be as King-esque as he has been in prior years.

MLB Handicapping: LA Angels already the least profitable team in baseball

04.13.2012     06:39 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
High expectations and multiple flaws have the Los Angeles Angels as the least profitable team in baseball at -4.50 units. According to ESPN, some of those flaws include Jered Weaver and Ervin Santana not being able to duplicate their 2011 numbers. The bullpen has already looked shaky with a 5.40 EA and .311 BA against. The Angels open up a three-game series in New York this afternoon.

MLB Gambling: Boston Red Sox starting to sour in the betting markets

04.13.2012     06:19 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Boston's rough start to the season (1-5) has bettors shying away from the normally popular ball club according to Las Vegas oddsmakers.

“We’re seeing significantly less Red Sox action this year compared to last year. It’s the least amount of Red Sox action we’ve taken in a while. They’re kind of an afterthought,” said Matthew Holt, director of race and sports at Cantor Gaming in Las Vegas.

“There are longer odds this year than the past couple of years due to the man-ager and GM change, and the fact that some of the other teams have added some key players to their teams,” Rood said.

MLB Gambling Free Pick: Miami Marlins at Philadelphia Phillies

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Miami (Buehrle) -105 at Philadelphia (Blanton) O/U 8
Recommendation: Miami

The Marlins lineup is significantly more potent than the Phillies lineup without Ryan Howard and Chase Utley these days.  Philadelphia managed just two runs per game for the first week of the season prior to last night’s breakout seven run performance.  The likes of John Mayberry, Lance Nix and Freddy Galvis aren’t exactly terrifying opposing staffs.  Meanwhile, Miami’s rebuilt ‘speed and power’ lineup had scored 19 runs in their three games prior to facing Roy Halladay last night, with a significant statistical edge over the Phillies in nearly every key offensive category.

The Marlins have a significant pitching edge in this ballgame as well.  Veteran southpaw Mark Buehrle is primed for early success in the NL after dominating the AL for the last decade.  The Phillies were completely stifled by Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Miami Marlins at Philadelphia Phillies

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Miami (Buehrle) -110 at Philadelphia (Blanton) O/U 8
Recommendation: Over

Well aware that Philadelphia's offense can no longer be regarded as potent but with two hittable pitches and a total of 8 in Citizens Bank Park, we'll take a look at the OVER. Joe Blanton hasn't started a game since May of last season and is nothing but a stop-gap at this point in his career. He made one appearance out of the bullpen last Saturday and proceeded to take the loss after allowing two hits and a run in 0.2 innings. After a few decent years for Oakland and the Phillies, Blanton has been in steady decline. Since 2010, he's combined ERA is 4.88 with a 1.43 WHIP. Miami's Mark Buehrle was solid in his first National League start, allowing two earned runs in six innings in a loss at Cincinnati. The Phillies should be able to run out a fairly right-hand heavy lineup tonight. Umpire Jeff Nelson has trended towards the OVER at nearly a 60% clip the last three seasons. The wind is expected to be blowing in Read more

MLB Betting News: Lincecum pounded again, velocity remains down

04.12.2012     06:46 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
FanGraphs tries to explain Tim Lincecum's early season struggles. He was pounded last night in Colorado for six runs and nine hits in 2.1 innings.

With his diminished velocity, Lincecum has also seen his peripherals drop. In his first full season, Lincecum struck out 28.6% of the batters he faced. That number dropped to 24.4% last year. That’s still pretty exceptional, but the number is declining. What’s more concerning is Lincecum’s walk rate. Lincecum’s BB% fell to a career low 7.5% in 2009, but it jumped to 9.6% last year. And even though he has lost velocity in the past and succeeded, you have to wonder how long he can be effective if his fastball averages 90 mph the whole season.
