NCAAF Betting Notes: Auburn staff gutted as Malzahn leaves for Arkansas State

12.14.2011     07:27 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Last week, Auburn defensive coordinator Ted Roof left for Central Florida. Today it was announced that offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn accepted an offer to become the head coach at Arkansas State. No word on whether or not Malzahn will stick around (unlikely) for the Chick-fil-A Bowl against Virginia on January 1. That means Auburn may be down both coordinators and running back Michael Dyer who was suspended. Arkansas State plays Northern Illinois in the GoDaddy.com Bowl on January 8.

NCAAF Betting Notes: UL-Lafayette gets true home field thanks to ticket sales

Louisiana-Lafayette vs. San Diego State -4.5 O/U 58

All aboard the UL-Lafayette bandwagon! If you want a ticket the New Orleans Bowl you had been hop on Craigslist because these things are HOT! ULL received an initial allotment of 6,000 tickets. After those sold, they got 6,000 more. Too bad that wasn’t enough as 6,000 more were sold and only 500 remain. Last season, the Ragin Cajuns went 3-9 and averaged about 17,000 fans per game. This year, as a result of a massive turnaround (8-4), ULL averaged just under 30,000 per game. Not bad for a Sun Belt team. Wonder how many San Diego State fans will be in attendance?

College Football Gambling: UCLA adjusts to uncertain coaching situation

UCLA vs. Illinois -2.5 O/U 47

Update on the current coaching situation for UCLA at it prepares for its bowl game against Illinois on December 31. The Bruins hired Jim Mora Jr. who expects to meet the team today. Mike Johnson was named the interim coach though is currently being courted for the Akron job. Jim Mastro, the run-game coordinator, just accepted a job at Washington State. Johnson was actually fired by Mora during his stay with the Atlanta Falcons.

"The last couple weeks have been weird," quarterback Kevin Prince said. "You just had to go with the flow and try to do your job."

"You find out your coach got fired, and you remember they always say not to pick a school because of the coach," cornerback Randall Carroll said. "You have to be a little selfish. It's not me getting fired. I can't be too Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Cincinnati's Collaros may return for Liberty Bowl

Cincinnati vs. Vanderbilt -2.5 O/U 48.5

Looks like there is a chance Cincinnati quarterback Zach Collaros will play in the Liberty Bowl against Vanderbilt. Collaros broke his ankle back in mid-November but may start to practice this week. Collaros' replacement, Munchie Legaux, was performed adequately the final three games of the season but wasn‘t much of a passer (108.9 QB rating). We would imagine Collaros would be given every chance to return but facing a tough Vanderbilt defense on a bum ankle may not be a good thing. The Commodores ranked 19th nationally in total defense (324 ypg allowed) and recorded 24 sacks.

"That is still a possibility that he'll play in the bowl game," Jones said. "He's taken tremendous strides in the rehabilitation effort. He's about two weeks ahead of Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Ugly divorce between Texas A&M and Mike Sherman

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Texas A&M -10 vs. Northwestern O/U 65

It is bad enough trying to handicap a team in the postseason that just fired its head coach but Texas A&M is in a league of its own. A&M decided to part ways with head coach Mike Sherman yesterday. It wasn't so much that they fired Sherman but instead how it went down. Sherman was on a recruiting visit when AD Bill Byrne called to break the news. According to Sherman, there was no indication he would be let go. Apparently, Sherman's family knew of the firing before he did (thanks of course to the wonderful world of social media). Defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter will take over on an interim basis. DeRuyter said that offensive line coach Jim Turner will be in charge of the play Read more

Handicapping College Football Bowl Games: A look at motivation

Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Taking a look at the motivational factors for each matchup this college football bowl season. In most cases, the chance to play another game is all these kids and coaches need, but every postseason we see plenty of teams fail to show up.

Temple vs. Wyoming - Both sides should be excited to be in the postseason. The Cowboys are looking to cap off a big turnaround (3-9 to 8-4) while Temple searches for a bowl victory after losing last year to UCLA – the program’s first postseason since 1979.

Utah State vs. Ohio - The Aggies haven't been in the postseason since 1997 so you know they are excited. Ohio meanwhile is 0-3 SU in bowl games under Frank Solich and blew a 20-point second half lead to Northern Illinois in the MAC Championship.

UL-Lafayette vs. San Diego State - Complete motivational mismatch. The Ragin Cajuns' last postseason appearance was 1970 in the Grantland Rice Bowl. They also get to play in their home state. San Diego State meanwhile gets shipped east to face a Sun Belt team? As a favorite no less.

Florida International vs. Marshall - Postseason Read more

College Football Betting Notes: Toledo's Beckman headed to Illinois

12.09.2011     07:31 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Toledo -3 at Air Force O/U 70

More coaching shakeups with Toledo's Tim Beckman headed to Illinois. Offensive coordinator Matt Campbell is expected to serve as interim (and potentially new head coach) for Toledo’s bowl matchup against Air Force. Of course there were mixed opinions on Beckman's departure as well as his new gig. No word on what role Beckman will have for Illinois' bowl game against UCLA.

"Wish ppl (sic) would practice what they preach," sophomore running back David Fluellen wrote. "Talk about finishing strong how are u (sic) finishing strong leaving before a bowl game."

"I respect Coach Beck for what he did!" sophomore defensive end Jayrone Elliott Read more
