MLB Betting Notes: Arizona calls up rookie lefty to face Miami

04.30.2012     06:53 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Arizona (Corbin) at Miami (Buehrle) -165 O/U 7.5

Arizona has been forced to juggle its pitching rotation due to the injury of Daniel Hudson and demotion of Josh Collmenter (now in the bullpen). The D-backs have two highly regarded prospects in Trevor Bauer and Tyler Skaggs but decided instead to call up lefty Pat Corbin for today's start in Miami. Corbin has put up great numbers at Double-A (1.67 ERA, 25 Ks in 27 IP) thus far. The reason for move appears to be situational with the Marlins really struggling against left-handed pitching (.169 BA, .212 OBP, .531 OPS).

"He probably pitched as well as anybody we have in camp this year and followed it up with a good start to his Double-A season," Towers said.

MLB Handicapping: Angels say hitter-friendly Santana not tipping pitches

04.29.2012     06:26 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
LA Angels (Santana) at Cleveland (Lowe) -105 O/U 8.5

It has been a disaster for Los Angeles' Ervin Santana with 10 home runs and 19 earned runs allowed in his first four starts. Of those 19 runs allowed, 10 have come in the first inning. In trying to figure out what is wrong, the Angels eliminated that he may be tipping his pitches. Santana’s velocity has been right in line with previous seasons, so it appears to be lack of location – a lot of it.

“We’re pretty confident that’s not the case — we didn’t see anything that stood out,” pitching coach Mike Butcher said. “It’s a matter of executing pitches and setting up hitters better.”

“When a guy checks off on a nasty breaking ball down and away, a ball he’d normally swing at, that’s an indication Read more

Free MLB Betting Pick: Milwaukee Brewers at St. Louis Cardinals

04.27.2012     11:22 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Milwaukee (Gallardo) at St. Louis (Westbrook)
Recommendation: Milwaukee +110 1st 5 innings

The Milwaukee Brewers (9-10) travel to Busch Stadium to open a three-game series against division rival St. Louis (12-7) tonight. The defending World Series champions are leading the NL Central division, but a correction is forthcoming for St. Louis and their worst starting pitcher, Jake Westbook. This looks like a solid spot to step in with a 5-inning play on the Brewers at a plus price.

Westbrook is overachieving through three starts with a 1.31 ERA and .189 BAA. A closer examination of his starts shows he faced three struggling offenses. With 10 strikeouts and seven walks in 20 innings and a very high strand rate, Westbrook’s numbers are going to go north very soon as indicated by his 4.25 career ERA.

Milwaukee’s bullpen is poor, but staff ace Yovani Gallardo (3.65 ERA) is the nuts. Slow starts are commonplace for him, but the power pitcher is performing Read more

MLB Betting News: Pujols struggles to adjust to new surroundings

04.27.2012     07:41 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
One theory as to why Albert Pujols is off to such a slow start (.224 BA, 0 HRs, .595 OPS) could be the change in venue. One scout noted how difficult it is to hit for power in Anaheim. And of his three road trips this season, two were in pitcher friendly Tampa Bay and Minnesota.

"He's very frustrated with that ballpark. The ball doesn't carry there,'' another scout said. "He probably underestimated the ballpark, and how tough it is to hit home runs there.''

"Anaheim is a tough place to homer at night,'' one Los Angeles-based scout said. "You better hit it in the early innings before the air gets heavier, and you better pull it.'' That scout, who seems to double as a meteorologist, said it's the "marine air'' that kills power hitters.

In case he's interested, our scout said, "He looks like he's trying to pull everything.'' (Although in Anaheim, that might be his best bet to hit one out.)

MLB Gambling Notes: San Francisco Giants and New York Mets go with spot starters

MLB Betting News: Tampa Bay Rays use defensive shift to their advantage

04.27.2012     06:53 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Very interesting article on the Tampa Bay Rays and how effective their defensive shift has been. Last year, it reportedly saved an MLB-high 85 runs.

"We talked about some things in Spring Training where the shift is becoming a little bit more unique to each player. Each shift is unique in its own way," Zobrist said. "It just varies depending on what they see on the spray charts with where these guys generally hit the ball."

"I just think it becomes more and more a game of who can make the adjustment first," Zobrist said. "We're trying to make the adjustment out in the field before they even hit the ball, because we know how we're going to pitch them, we know how they're generally going to hit the ball, and if we put ourselves in the right spot, we're going to catch a lot of line drives and balls that are normally hits for these guys."

MLB Handicapping: Boston Red Sox feasting on average right-handed starters

04.27.2012     06:44 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Boston Red Sox are slowly hitting their way back to respectability with 43 runs, 10 homes runs, a .363 BA and 1.010 OPS over their last five games (4-1). Prior to that, they produced a more modest 4.7 runs per game, 13 home runs and a .263 BA in 13 contests (4-9). The burst of productivity however is likely tied to the level of competition. During this five-game, run-scoring bonanza they've faced nothing but mediocre, soft-tossing, right-handed starters (31 runs in 19 IP vs. Garcia, Marquis, Blackburn, Hendriks and Humber). Check out what those five games did to Boston's lefty/righty splits vs. starting pitchers.

copy_redsox_split.JPG

We'll see how they fare tonight against Chicago lefty John Danks who has a good track record against some of Boston's key bats.

Boston vs. John Danks
David Ortiz 2-for-11
Dustin Pedroia 2-for-12
Kevin Youkilis 3-for-12

Free MLB Betting Pick: Toronto Blue Jays at Baltimore Orioles

Submitted by Rob Veno

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Toronto (Hutchison) -115 at Baltimore (Matusz) O/U 9
Recommendation: Over

There are numerous favorable conditions pointing toward extreme run production in this contest. Neither of the starting pitchers, Baltimore’s Brian Matusz or 21-year-old Toronto rookie Drew Hutchinson is currently demonstrating the ability to slow down opposing lineups. For Matusz, the run of poor pitching extends back to last season and the southpaw can’t seem to find positive answers. This season’s three starts have resulted in three game ERA’s of 7.20 or higher, three game WHIP’s of 1.94 or higher and three games of 18.7 pitches per inning or higher. To make matters worse, he’s been hammered by the Blue Jays going 0-3 in his four career starts and lasting only 11 innings total. He’s allowed 29 base runners in those 11 innings, six home runs and has a 13.09 ERA. Have to expect Blue Jays hitters who have a combined .904 OPS against Matusz to put up another explosive Read more
