Philadelphia (Halladay) -165 at Pittsburgh (Bedard) O/U 7

With injuries to Ryan Howard and Chase Utley as well as the departure of Raul Ibanez, Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel plans on toying with his lineup early this season. Below is today's slated lineup vs. Pittsburgh.

"I'm going to play a lot of different guys early in the season and see what our best lineup is," Manuel said.

MLB Betting Game Notes: Miami's Buehrle set to go after sluggish spring

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Miami (Buehrle) at Cincinnati (Cueto) -145 O/U 7.5

Nothing out of the ordinary but Miami's Mark Buehrle once again limped his way through spring training. The veteran is notorious for poor preseason performances. This afternoon he makes his National League debut in Cincinnati. Of today's lineup for the Reds, Scott Rolen, Brandon Phillips, Jay Bruce, Ryan Hanigan are a combined 4-for-26 lifetime against Buehrle. The rest of the lineup has never faced him.

"I feel like I've thrown terrible, as always, but it's not all about results, it's about getting your work in, innings up, pitch count up, get ready for opening day," Buehrle said.

I made a couple of mistakes, I had the ball up," Buehrle said. "Whenever I'm good and my ball is moving the way I want it to we get a lot of groundballs. When they're hitting the ball in the air it just Read more

MLB Handicapping: Miami's Johnson makes first start since last May

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
St. Louis at Miami -180 O/U 7

Miami's Josh Johnson will make his first start since May 16 of last year after being shut down due to shoulder inflammation. At the time of his injury, the Marlins were 24-16. They finished the season 48-74. Johnson's injury didn't require surgery – something he endured back in 2007 with Tommy John. When healthy, few have been able to match his numbers: 2.64 ERA in 453 IP dating back to 2008.

“With Tommy John, that first week is really hard,” Johnson says. “Your elbow is three times the size it’s supposed to be. You have those thoughts, Will I ever throw again, all that stuff? But after the swelling goes down, then it’s pretty normal. You have a plan. You have everything set out for pretty much the next Read more

MLB Gambling News and Notes: Opening Day success

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The full schedule of opening day games begins tomorrow and no surprise that last year’s top teams are showing a favorite betting bias. Last year’s division winners were the New York Yankees, Detroit Tigers, Texas Rangers, Philadelphia Phillies, Milwaukee Brewers and Arizona Diamondbacks. All division winners finished with at least 94 wins in the regular season, which is a .580 winning percentage or better.

The Yankees and Phillies were the two teams that finished with at least a .600 winning percentage. However, in Spring Training 2012, only the Yankees and Tigers had a winning record. Does spring training success carry over to positive regular season results?

Here’s some historical data for teams that won at least 60% of their spring training games the past six years. Of those 39 teams that accomplished that level of spring training success, only 15 of those teams went on to make the playoffs. However, those 39 teams still averaged nearly 90 wins, so a winning season is still a positive projection. This year’s top spring training Read more

MLB Handicapping: Chicago Cubs thinking like a real ball club

04.03.2012     12:02 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Holy cow! Based on this article, it is almost as if the Chicago Cubs are starting to buy into what it takes to be a successful organization.

“It’s almost like cheating the way they have it down to be able to advance the other team,” Sveum said. “You can see black and white where guys weaknesses (and) strengths are. You can put data to video instead of just watching (it). It’s cheating that the Cubs haven’t had before – (and) a lot of other teams have had.

“We adopted the same two-man rotating advance team that we had in Boston,” Epstein said. “Most teams have either no advance scouts on the road or one. But when you have one advance scout on the road, there’s a risk of becoming kind of isolated and that advance scout never gets any face time with the manager or coaching staff or players. He’s simply an e-mailed report in and it’s really easy for that information to get ignored.
