ACC Championship Betting Notes: Clemson Tigers vs. Virginia Tech Hokies

11.28.2011     09:40 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
ACC Championship @ Charlotte, NC
Virginia Tech vs. Clemson
CRIS Opener: Virginia Tech -6.5
CRIS Current: Virginia Tech -7.5

Notes: Didn't take long for bettors to clear out the key number of -6.5. It has been over a month since Clemson put together a solid outing. Only a last second field goal over Wake Forest kept the Tigers from entering this one on a four-game slide. Quarterback Tajh Boyd looks to be breaking down with seven interceptions his last four games (3 INTs his first eight games). The Tigers lead the ACC in most offensive categories but Virginia Tech isn't too far behind. The Hokies averaged 419.3 ypg and 6.03 ypp vs. ACC foes and are clearly peaking at the right time. These two teams met back on October 1 with Clemson (+7) winning outright 23-3 in Blacksburg. Since then, the Hokies have averaged 31.2 ppg. Trench play appears to heavily favor Virginia Tech. Against ACC opponents, the Hokies allowed 126.5 ypg on the ground (3.8 ypc) while Read more

C-USA Championship Betting Notes: Southern Miss Golden Eagles at Houston Cougars

C-USA Championship
Southern Miss at Houston
CRIS Opener: Houston -13
CRIS Current: Houston -13.5

Notes: The last time Houston was involved in a competitive game was late September; a 49-42 win at UTEP. Since then, the Cougars have won by margins of 32, 30, 56, 43, 39, 35, and 53. But it seems like we go through this every year – C-USA West teams put up monster offensive numbers but falter in the championship game over the more defensive-minded East. The East has won the last four titles (3 of those 4 were at East site) and Southern Miss ranks No. 1 in the total defense (323.6 ypg allowed) in conference play. Over the last four seasons, only one of USM's 10 league losses came by double-digits (1, 1, 6, 13, 7, 5, 3, 3, 5, 6). The last time these two teams met, Southern Miss won 59-41 in Hattiesburg. Houston quarterback Case Keenum did not play. The line shot up to Houston -14 but has settled in at Read more

College Football Handicapping: Breaking down the Big East race

11.26.2011     07:38 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With Louisville's win over South Florida yesterday, the race for the Big East crown got a bit clearer thanks to this explanation. The Cardinals are in the best spot (5-2) and just need Cincinnati to lose one of its final two games (at Syracuse, vs. UConn). Louisville's players seem pretty confident as a few were comfortable posing with oranges following yesterday's win – hello Orange Bowl berth? Rutgers and Cincinnati are still alive but need various things to happen to one another. West Virginia needs a three-way tie and hope for a higher BCS ranking (game vs. LSU?) to earn a bid.

College Football Gambling Pick: Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. Baylor Bears

Texas Tech +13 vs. Baylor O/U 80
Recommendation: Texas Tech

Remember when Texas Tech upset Oklahoma earlier this season? They next time out the Red Raiders lost at home by 34 as 15.5-point underdogs. In fact, they've played only one competitive game since. Last week, Baylor joined the party and took down the Sooners on the strength of Heisman candidate Robert Griffin. It was the Bears' first-ever win in 21 tries over the Sooners. Today's game will take place at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas and Baylor closes out the regular season next week at home against another high profile team it doesn't have much of a track record against in Texas. Texas Tech is still going to need to show up for this one. Last week, we finally saw some fight from this bunch in a four-point loss at Missouri. At 5-6, the Red Raiders obviously need a win to go to the postseason. For how dynamic Baylor can be, let's not forget that this isn't a very good defense. In fact, in conference play, Texas Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: East Carolina offense forced to tap into depth chart

UPDATE

East Carolina at Marshall -2.5 O/U 53.5

We reported on East Carolina's injury last week and here is an update. According to coaches, as much as 75% of the team’s current offensive players were not expected to see playing time this season. The Pirates opened 3-point favorites at CRIS but Marshall is now a 2.5-point favorite and looks to be headed to -3 with multiple shops showing -115 juice.

“Having to use guys that, honestly, we never really even thought of using, it’s tested us,” said Riley, whose unit shattered several school records when it was healthy last season. “It’s been tough, but it’s been exciting to see the new, young talent rise up and do a lot of good Read more

Arkansas at LSU -11.5 O/U 53.5

No. 1 vs. No. 3 hook in Baton Rouge this afternoon with a trip to the SEC title game on the line. LSU leads the nation with a +17 net turnover differential and the Tigers are 18-0 SU their last 18 games when they win the turnover battle. LSU has also won 10 games by double-digits this season. In the one game they faced a true passing attack like what they‘ll see this afternoon, the Tigers allowed 463 passing yards to West Virginia. LSU still won the game 47-21 thanks to, you guessed it, turnovers! These are the league’s top two scoring offenses at over 34 ppg in SEC play, and Arkansas averages 423 ypg to lead the league. Arkansas quarterback Wilson averages 317 passing ypg, but will face a superior LSU defense that leads the SEC in passing ypg (120) allowed in league play and just 47% completions. Along with solid special teams and kicking game, LSU doesn’t look like it will be denied in the quest for berths in the SEC and BSC Read more

Pittsburgh at West Virginia -6.5 O/U 57

The Backyard Brawl always brings back fond memories, as we cashed our biggest outright underdog winner ever in 2007 when Pittsburgh (+29) went to Morgantown and beat No. 2 West Virginia, 13-9. We had a top play 20* Big Drive play on the side and also cashed the under as West Virginia blew its chance to play in the BCS Championship. Last year the Panthers were pounded in Pittsburgh in a 35-10 West Virginia win. The Big East is balanced this year with no team showing superior strength. These are the league’s top two scoring teams and West Virginia is the Big East’s strongest offense averaging 462 ypg in conference play including 361 passing ypg. But Pitt can run the ball and clock with 183 rushing ypg against Big East foes and have the league’s No. 2 pass defense to try and slow what the Mountaineers do best. Two first-year coaches lead their teams in the final edition of the Backyard Brawl, and Pittsburgh Read more

NCAAF Gambling News: Cincinnati not worried despite two-game slide

Cincinnati -2 at Syracuse O/U 49.5

Cincinnati quarterback Zach Collaros is out, the team has lost two straight, and a once first place lead has diminished into a three-way tie for third in the Big East. That is the current situation for the Bearcats as they travel to Syracuse this weekend. Back-up quarterback Munchie Legaux didn't play particularly well (12-of-31, 158 yards, 0 TDs, 1 INT) in last week's 20-3 loss at Rutgers but the defense also surrendered 203 yards on the ground. With their backs up against the wall, Cinciannati claims it isn’t panicking just yet. Helping their cause should be a step down in class defensively. While Rutgers ranked 15th nationally in total defense, Syracuse ranks 72nd. Also a little bit of revenge after the Orange won at Cinci last year 31-7 as six-point Read more

Teddy Covers offers his opinion on the Hawaii point shaving allegations

UPDATE

I just did some research on this story.  Not to say that it didn't happen, but some “facts” in the Covers piece tonight are false.  Wynn's lines don't count as opening numbers – they take opinions, they open first, their limits are low, and they are not market numbers.

CRIS opened -4, closed -3.5…the number bounced back and forth between 3.5 and 4 all week.

I also watched the game – the whole game – and if that game was “fixed” in any way, I sure as hell didn't see it.

It's worth noting that in most point shaving scenarios we see the favorite win but not cover...the classic “nobody gets hurt, we make money” scenario; an easy sell for kids who don't have any “walking around” money in their pockets.  Hawaii is 2-6 ATS as favorites this year, but they've been LOSING those games in SU fashion (four times) – very, very atypical of what we would expect to see from a pointshaving situation.

College Football Betting Notes: Five-win Vanderbilt favored at Wake Forest

Vanderbilt -1.5 at Wake Forest O/U 49.5

Interesting situation with Vanderbilt (5-6) vying for a bowl berth but favored on the road following a disheartening overtime loss to in-state rival Tennessee. Wake Forest has already hit the six-win plateau but claims this week's game is just as important as any other. The Demon Deacons won last year's meeting in Nashville, 34-13.

"Nobody likes to lose, especially the way that we did," defensive tackle Rob Lohr said. "We have to bounce back, get it back this week and make it to a bowl game. It's definitely a one-game season. We have to be ready."

“That’s the thing we can’t do (is act relieved to get to Read more
