College Football Betting News: Florida says all three quarterbacks could see time vs. Michigan

08.24.2017     09:29 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
When a team says it plans on playing two quarterbacks, it generally means neither signal caller is good enough to earn the full-time job. When a team says it plans on playing three quarterbacks, it without question means no one is currently good enough to earn the full-time job. Of course, Florida could be (is probably) playing it somewhat coy as it preps for its Week 1 matchup vs. Michigan. Luke Del Rio, who was lackluster at best last year (118.6 QB Rating), even when healthy, is in the mix. So is Notre Dame transfer Malik Zaire. Then there is Feleipe Franks who is poised to be the starter of the future. The Gators haven't ranked in the top six of the SEC in team QB rating since 2009 when a guy named Tebow was taking snaps.

"Ultimately the guy that the team moves with the best," he said. "The guys that create positive plays on third down and get the ball in the end zone. That's kind of where we're at."

NFL Preseason Free Betting Pick: Baltimore Ravens at Miami Dolphins

08.17.2017     01:18 PM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Baltimore +2.5 at Miami O/U 37.5
Recommendation: Baltimore

The Miami Dolphins have no business as favorites in this ballgame. One of the biggest ‘red flags’ in preseason for any team – let alone a favorite – is when a coach starts whining about his injury situation. That’s exactly what Adam Gase has done this week. When a coach can’t handle any more injuries, the entire team seems to feel it, and you tend to see significantly less intensity for a meaningless August game. And Gase has been dealing with the cumulative effect of the injury bug all week, even cancelling practice on Tuesday to go through a ‘no pads’ walk through.

Gase has every reason to whine considering the state of his offensive line right now. Jay Cutler is supposed to get his first game action with Miami here, but how long he’ll be on the field is very much in question, especially given the state of the Dolphins offensive line right now. Center Mike Pouncey (hip) isn’t likely to play. Right tackle Ja’Wuan James (shoulder), has missed practices all week as has guard-center Kraig Urbik (back). Read more

College Football Gambling: Pitt will try to revive defense with youth

08.15.2017     08:25 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Pitt's defense was probably a shade better than the 35.2 ppg it surrendered last season but make no mistake, there were issues. One of the biggest was coughing up big plays. The Panthers allowed 24 plays of 40 yards or longer which ranked 121st nationally. Third-year had coach Pat Narduzzi will attempt to shore up a unit that is projected to be extremely young this season. Pitt manages to avoid Clemson and Florida State but plenty of challenges await. After opening with Youngstown State, the Panthers travel to Penn State, home vs. Oklahoma State, and then open up ACC play at Georgia Tech. Those three squads averaged 39.3 ppg in last year's meetings. Pitt squeeked out two of the three but also went 0-3 ATS.

If you listen to coach Pat Narduzzi and defensive coordinator Josh Conklin, there are 13 young players who they believe are practicing well enough or will eventually compete for spots on the two-deep depth chart. Nine of the 13 are freshmen or redshirt freshmen, nine are shy of their 20th birthday and six are serious

College Football Handicapping: Virginia Tech goes with redshirt frosh quarterback

08.15.2017     08:07 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Virginia Tech has named redshirt freshman Josh Jackson its Week 1 starter. Under first-year head coach Justin Fuente, last year's starter, Jerod Evans, broke a handful of single-season school records as the Hokies finished 10-4. Tech is currently a -4.5/-5 favorite for its season opener against West Virginia. The game will be played at FedEx Field in Landover, Md.

"Day in and day out he's been more consistent in terms of the things that we've talked about, the three criteria we've talked about before this camp started, and what we are looking for. Taking care of the football, expected outcomes, and how we feel. And in those three categories we feel the best about Josh," Fuente said.

"His execution, his level of understanding the offense, his ability to get out there play after play, and do exactly what he's supposed to do and protecting the football. He showed us that that's really important to him and those factors combined altogether," added Hokies offensive coordinator Brad

College Football Betting News: Florida suspends seven for season opener vs. Michigan

08.14.2017     07:05 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
One of the disadvantages of playing an actual game in Week 1 and not some patsy from the Sun Belt is that there's always a chance for some good old fashion offseason suspensions. Florida announced that it will be without the services of seven players including the team's top offensive weapon, wide receiver, Antonio Callaway. Frustrating situation for summer bettors as there was a lot of pro-Gator money. Michigan opened -5 and was bet down to -2.5 before sportsbooks took the game off the board.

"We have a small group of players that have made some choices that are extremely disappointing," head coach Jim McElwain said in a statement, though he did not elaborate on the reason for their suspension. "Action has been taken they have missed some practice and will miss the Michigan game. We will use this as a learning opportunity and we will have some players step up as we move forward."

College Football Betting: Rutgers looks to go more traditional route on offense

08.02.2017     09:19 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In terms of yards per play, no team averaged fewer (4.13) than the Rutgers Scarlet Knights last season. This after posting a respectable 5.61 ypp in 2015. Changes of course were made, the most notable being the somewhat odd hiring of former Minnesota head coach Jerry Kill to serve as offensive coordinator. It's hard to label exactly what system Rutgers was attempting to run a season ago. Articles here and here suggest Kill will attempt to go the more traditional route by utilizing the run game and tight ends. There however remain lots of questions as to who will be in charge of taking snaps and blocking up front. The good news is the Scarlet Knights can lose by four touchdowns in their season opener vs. Washington and still cover the pointspread.

When asked about the state of the offensive line, Kill smiled and said, “Talk to me in three weeks (and)

College Football Gambling: Big Ten Crossover Games

07.31.2017     08:54 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Quick breakdown of the Big Ten's scheduling partners. Last season, the conference moved to nine games which caused obvious home/road imbalance. The East Division received the 5 home/4 road split which the West Division will now enjoy this season. Out of the East's top contenders (Penn State, Michigan, and Ohio State), the Wolverines draw the most favorable crossover slate with easy wins at Purdue and vs. Minnesota. They do however travel to Madison the week prior to taking on Ohio State. Penn State must travel to Iowa and Northwestern while playing home vs. Nebraska. Ohio State gets cupcake Illinois at home but goes to Lincoln and Iowa City. In terms of the West's crossover SOS, we'll grade it on the following questions: Do you play Rutgers? How many games to you play against Michigan, Penn State, and Ohio State? By those parameters, Iowa caught no breaks with home games vs. OSU and PSU as well as a road trip to East Lansing. Illinois does travel to Columbus but the rebuilding Illini get winnable home games vs. the East's two weakest teams in Rutgers and Indiana. Similar situation for fellow bottom feeder Purdue with Michigan at home and both the Scarlet Knights and rival Read more
