Gamblers continue to show support for Conor McGregor

07.25.2017     11:20 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
If you want some Floyd Mayweather in your pocket, now may be a good time to grab some as a few bets on Conor McGregor have driven the line down to as low as -550 (-672 at Pinnacle).

One adventurous bettor wagered $35,000 on McGregor to win by KO at 6-1 odds. That bet would win $210,000 if McGregor pulled off the shocker.

College Football Betting News: Utah brings in new OC to spark stagnant offense

07.24.2017     10:05 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
One of the constants for the Utah Utes program has been Kyle Whittingham who took over in 2005. Under his watch, the Utes are 104-50 including a stellar 10-1 in the postseason. The one inconsistency has been offense as the Utes ranked 11th of 12 in total offense in the PAC-12 five out of the last six years. Whittingham has tried out a lot of different offensive coordinators and schemes. He gave Norm Chow a shot as well as former quarterback Brian Johnson. Hell, even Dennis Erickson got a turn. This year, Whittingham is going with former high school and Eastern Washington coach Troy Taylor. In one season as EWU's passing game coordinator, the Eagles put up some sick numbers including 5,766 yards of total offense which was an FCS record. Since joining the PAC-12, Utah is 33-41-1 O/U. Perhaps this is the season the Utes produce better than average offensive numbers.

“I’m just big on trying a lot of different things," Taylor said. "If it works, great. If it doesn’t, there’s no harm

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Boston Red Sox at Texas Rangers

Boston (Fister) at Texas (Cashner)
Recommendation: Over 6 1st 5-innings

There a reason this 5-inning total is sitting at 6: Two above average offenses that rank in the top four in runs scores in the American League going up against two very suspect starting pitchers in a ballpark that has a tendency to play "small" during the summer months.

Boston's Doug Fister has been serviceable since being called (11 IP, 6 ERs) up but the 33-year-old veteran wasn't pitching in The Show for a reason. After parlaying his success in Detroit for a big pay day in Washington, Fister's stuff started to diminish. North of 30-years-old, Fister was then shipped to the Astros and thus the American League where he was pounded around throughout the 2016 season (4.64 ERA, 32 starts). The Red Sox are hoping he can chew up a few starts but it's not likely he'll produce much long term.

On the other side is Andrew Cashner, who after a strong April and May, saw his numbers skyrocket. While only recording 22 IP in June, Cashner gave up 33 hits. Cashner's new pitch-to-contact style got him through the first two months of the season but his stats Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: New York Yankees at Houston Astros

New York (Pineda) at Houston (McCullers) -165 O/U 8
Recommendation: Houston

The Astros are 12-2 in Lance McCullers 14 previous starts this season, making him #2 in MLB in profitability among big league starters this year, behind only Clayton Kershaw. And there’s absolutely no reason to think that McCullers won’t be a bet-on hurler against the Yankees again tonight.

McCullers dominated this lineup in the Bronx last month, throwing six strong innings of four hit shutout ball. This isn’t new or different – McCullers advanced metric numbers are right there with Chris Sale and Alex Wood, two of the best pitchers in baseball this year. With a strikeout rate of more than 11 K’s per nine innings and a ground ball rate of higher than 60%, McCullers is in truly elite territory. Pitching behind one of the most potent lineups in baseball (21 runs in their just concluded three game set against the A’s), with a rock solid bullpen to close out the game behind him, McCullers is in prime positon to continue his winning ways.

Michael Pineda has one fatal flaw that has doomed him to mediocrity Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Chicago Cubs at Washington Nationals

Chicago (Lester) at Washington (Ross) +100 O/U 9.5
Recommendation: Chicago

We’re seeing a near pick em price range in this matchup where the home team has some significant edges . Let’s start with the fact that the Chicago Cubs just aren’t very good in 2017; a bottom five team in profitability and a .500 team on the field through the first half of the campaign. To make matters worse, the injury bug has been biting, with Kris Bryant sidelined today, joining big bats Ben Zobrist and Jason Heyward on the bench. For a squad that has averaged less than three runs per game over the past week, the loss of Bryant certainly isn’t a good thing!

Jon Lester won 19 games last year with a 2.44 ERA. This year, he’s only notched five wins and his ERA is nearly a run and a half higher. What gives? Simple – the Cubs defense behind him is a shell of what it was last year; and that defense is notably worse without Heyward or Zobrist on the field. Last year, his BABIP was .254. This year, when opponents make contact, they’re hitting .304, and much of that difference can be attributed to a defense that Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Boston Red Sox at Philadelphia Phillies

Boston (Johnson) -125 at Philadelphia (Hellickson) O/U 10
Recommendation: Boston

Despite being 21-42 as a team, the Philadelphia Phillies are 9-4 when Jeremy Hellickson toes the rubber. Hellickson started the season strong (1.80 ERA first five starts) but has been exposed in a big way of late. Over his last eight outings, Hellickson has been pounded to the tune of a 6.43 ERA and 12 home runs allowed. He also sports an alarming 22/17 K-to-BB ratio. He's simply not fooling anyone and is tasked with facing an above average American League lineup tonight.

Boston is priced rather cheaply tonight because unproven rookie Brian Johnson is on the bump. Johnson, a former first round pick, has been serviceable with a 3.44 ERA and 16/4 K-to-BB ratio in three starts. And his Minor League stats (2.61 ERA over 471 IP), suggest he'll be able to get MLB hitters out at a decent rate. My issue with Johnson is that he's not a big swing-and-miss arm and tends to give up a lot of fly balls. That's not ideal tossing in Fenway against the American League but in this spot, even in a hitter friendly park, he has a good chance to post a Read more

NBA Playoff Betting: LeBron James poised for success following Game 3 stinker

05.23.2017     09:45 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In a rare occurrence, LeBron James "pooped the bed" in Cleveland's infamous Game 3 loss to the Boston Celtics. James finished with 11 points and six turnovers. One would expect James to fire back with a solid showing for tonight's Game 4. His current prop bet point total is 32.5. Prior to Game 3, James averaged 34.3 ppg. He also had a seven-game stretch where he netted 33 or more -- it would have been eight straight had he not been pulled in Game 2's blowout. There's the potential tonight with the Cavs currently -15 chalk but it wouldn't shock us to see James post big numbers.

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Colorado Rockies at Minnesota Twins

Colorado (Chatwood) at Minnesota (Berrios) -127 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Minnesota

I don’t normally get involved with Game 2 of a doubleheader from a service standpoint, in large part because of the inability to gauge the effects of Game 1 on the two bullpens. But this game stands out as an exception to my basic ‘no doubleheaders’ rule for two reasons. First, we want to be on Jose Berrios RIGHT NOW, before the markets catch up. Second, both bullpens should be in decent shape after yesterday’s rainout.

Let’s start with Berrios who led the minor leagues in strikeouts in 2015. Last year, he dominated at Triple-A but struggled mightily in his transition to the majors; only notching an 8.2% swinging strike rate while nibbling around the corners instead of challenging hitters with his best stuff. The end result was downright ugly: 14 starts, an 8.02 ERA and a 1.87 WHIP, with the Twins going 3-11 in those games. Berrios stuff wasn’t the problem. His ability to harness his nasty stuff effectively was.

Well, that was last year. Berrios opened this season dominating Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: New York Mets at Milwaukee Brewers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New York (Harvey) at Milwaukee (Garza) -102 O/U 9
Recommendation: Milwaukee

It’s not hard to make a case for betting against Matt Harvey and the Mets right now. Let’s start with Harvey! You all know the headlines already -- Harvey getting drunk and going on a bender instead of showing up at the ballpark last week after his ex-girlfriend went on a date with the Patriots Julian Edelman, resulting in a team suspension and plenty of New York media hype.

But what hasn’t made as many headlines is the fact that Matt Harvey is not the same pitcher he was two years ago, not even close. Since throwing a gem against the light hitting Braves in his 2017 debut, the Mets are 1-4 in Harvey’s subsequent five trips to the hill. His 5.14 ERA is no aberration, considering his 5.76 FIP. Many of his advanced metric stats are down compared to his career numbers, like strikeouts and swinging strike percentage, while his walk rate has gone up significantly.

So, we’re talking about a guy still being priced like a former ace, coming off a 10-day layoff, enmeshed in an off-field personal crisis Behind him, the Read more
