NHL Handicapper Free Play: Florida Panthers at Ottawa Senators

Florida -110 at Ottawa O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Florida

If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em and right now the Florida Panthers are a team that can’t be beaten. The red hot Panthers head to Ottawa looking for their 11th consecutive win which has already been established as a franchise record winning streak. Three Florida players were named to the All-Star ame yesterday: Jaromir Jagr at the ripe age of 43, goaltender Roberto Luongo and 19-year-old defenseman Aaron Ekblad. I can’t think of three bigger reasons why Florida has surged to this 10-game winning streak and risen to the top of the Atlantic Division. Jagr has played like he is 20 years younger than he actually is registering 14 goals and 29 points in 37 game. Ekblad is a dominant defenseman already at his age at both ends of the ice and has a team leading +16 rating in plus/minus. Luongo has turned back the clock in between the pipes with one of his best seasons in recent memory. He enters tonight with sparkling numbers including a 2.06 GAA and .930 save percentage. Jonathan Huberdeau and Aleksander Barkov have also been integral components to Florida’s recent Read more

College Basketball Gambling: Purdue not pleased with offensive efficiency

01.07.2016     07:16 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Purdue may have arguably the best defense in the country but head coach Matt Painter ain't happy. Last week, the Boilermakers ran out to a 37-20 halftime lead against Iowa but proceeded to allowed 50 in the second half. It resulted in a 70-63 home loss. Painter said that it wasn't so much poor defense as it was poor offense that played a role in the meltdown. Purdue plays host to Michigan tonight.

"Our offense has been poor,"  Painter said. "We haven't taken care of the basketball and our shot selection hasn’t been great. Any time you're in transition more and you can’t set your defense, you're not going to be be as efficient."

"We had guys that didn’t play with poise; didn’t show their experience," Painter said. "Nothing that happened in the second half didn’t happen in the first half.  When there's something that needs to be adjusted, you make that adjustment at halftime. When you've held somebody to 20 points and

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Seton Hall Pirates at Villanova Wildcats

Seton Hall at Villanova
Recommendation: Over 66 1st half

Villanova's offense looked like a well oiled machine in Big East wins over Xavier and Creighton. The Wildcats hit a combined 51-of-64 from two and 19-of-43 from three. They can score from all over the court and have an endless array of offensive weapons. Seton Hall has been serviceable on the offensive end with 83 and 78 point efforts in wins over Marquette and DePaul. Both games also featured a fair amount of pace with 80 and 72 possessions respectively. What I don't buy is any of Seton Hall's defensive numbers as multiple metrics indicate the schedule has been extremely favorable in terms of its opponent's offensive potency. In fact, six of their foes are currently averaging less than a point per possession. The Pirates allowed 1.09 ppp in Big East play last season which means we can put little stock into their current output of 0.94 (32nd nationally). Tonight serves as a massive step up in class considering Villanova ranks sixth in offensive efficiency despite struggling from beyond the arc to start the season. You do have to be concerned about Villanova's ability on the defensive end which Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Clemson vs. Alabama Betting Preview

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
One thing has legitimately changed in the four team playoff era, compared to the BCS Championship era that just ended prior to last year.  Instead of having three weeks to prepare for the title game, teams now have three weeks to prepare for a semi-final game, with a much shorter turnaround time prior to the title game.  The three previous national titles that Nick Saban won at Alabama all came under at least somewhat different circumstances than the title game they’ll play in next Monday.

When we take a look back at the national championship teams over the last decade, we can get a decent idea of the commonalities between those teams and use that to project forward for this year. Texas in 2005, Florida in 2006, LSU in 2007, Florida in 2008, Alabama in 2009, Auburn in 2010, Alabama in 2011 and 2012, Florida State in 2013 and Ohio State in 2014 combine to give us a profile worth noting.

The #1 commonality the last ten champions had is elite level talent.  That may sound obvious – it is obvious – but there are metrics worthy of mention that give an advantage to Alabama over Clemson.  Each of the last ten champs had a recruiting Read more

Alamo Bowl Betting Preview: TCU Horned Frogs vs. Oregon Ducks

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Alamo Bowl - San Antonio, TX
TCU vs. Oregon
Saturday, January 2, 3:45 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Oregon pk O/U 75
CRIS Current: Oregon -7 O/U 73.5
Recommendation: Oregon

Oregon just lost offensive coordinator Scott Frost, who took the Central Florida coaching job.  But the transition to new coordinator Matt Lubick should be relatively smooth.  Frost was expected to get a head coaching gig; Lubick was the heir apparent, and he, too, has already attracted attention as a rising young assistant.  Some pre-bowl assistant coaching changes are very meaningful, but this isn’t one of those situations.

It’s a very different story when we start to talk about the key losses that TCU has suffered.  Gary Patterson’s Horned Frogs ranked among the best teams in the country with Trevone Boykin at quarterback and Josh Doctson at wide receiver.  But Doctson’s arm is in a sling; he’s not going to suit up for the Alamo Bowl.  Doctson is absolutely worth something to the pointspread, a playmaker with 14 TD’s and a 17.0 yard per catch average Read more

Fiesta Bowl Betting Preview: Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. Ohio State Buckeyes

Fiesta Bowl - Glendale, AZ
Notre Dame vs. Ohio State
Friday, Janaury 1, 10 am PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Ohio State -6.5 O/U 54
CRIS Current: Ohio State -6 O/U 56.5
Recommendation: Notre Dame

From tradition, competitive and ability standpoints, this is a terrific draw for the Fiesta Bowl. My power ratings suggest that these are two of the top eight teams in the nation so of the 38 non-playoff Bowls, it’s as close to a CFB Playoff caliber game as there is on the schedule. The game does not feature any real situational angle but you could make a small case that Notre Dame has a motivational advantage since the Buckeyes are a bit disappointed to not be in the four team playoff. However, this New Year’s Day stage and this opponent likely negate that. Fundamental matchups should determine the best way to play this one so let’s take a look at a couple keys.

It’s been a tough month for Ohio State which has seen some personnel losses due to injury and off field issues. A team imposed suspension will cost them starting sr. DT Adolphus Washington and combined with the injury Read more

Outback Bowl Betting Preview: Tennessee Volunteers vs. Northwestern Wildcats

Outback Bowl - Tampa, FL
Tennessee vs. Northwestern
Friday, January 1, 9 am PT - ESPN2
CRIS Opener
: Tennessee -8 O/U 45.5
CRIS Current: Tennessee -8.5 O/U 47

Tennessee should have a pretty good idea of what to expect against Northwestern having played in the SEC East. The division was peppered with pedestrian offenses and sub-par quarterback play which is exactly what the Wildcats bring to the table. They had three games where they failed to top 3 yards per play and only once topped 28 points against FBS competition.

Northwestern got to 10 wins thanks in large part to an above average defense that allowed 16.4 ppg and favorable schedule. They managed to duck Michigan State, Ohio State, and Indiana, and in step up game against Michigan and Iowa, the Wildcats allowed 78 points, 872 totals yards, and nearly 500 yards on the ground. And Tennessee is more capable with the ball than both the Wolverines and Hawkeyes. That said, Tennessee did play a handful of low scoring games. It was 17-17 before overtime against Oklahoma, the Read more

Holiday Bowl Betting Preview: Wisconsin Badgers vs. USC Trojans

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Holiday Bowl - San Diego, CA
Wisconsin vs. USC
Wednesday, December 30, 7:30 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
USC -3 O/U 51
CRIS Current: USC -3 O/U 50
Recommendation: USC

Wisconsin's strength of schedule, or lack thereof, is an obvious starting point with this handicap. The Badgers didn't play Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State, or Indiana this season. Instead they drew Iowa and Northwestern at home (lost both games) and got manhandled against Alabama in Week 1. Against its five opponents that reached the postseason (two of which, Minnesota and Nebraska, went 5-7 in the regular season), Wisconsin averaged only 319 ypg. You can make a strong argument that UW's 5.29 ypp vs. 4.39 ypp allowed is in fact extremely weak based on the level of competition.

USC meanwhile went through a meatgrinder of a slate (No. 3 SOS Sagarin) and managed to win eight games despite losing its head coach midseason. But just because you play a tougher schedule than your opponent doesn't always make you the better team. When asked to step up in class, the Trojans didn't always fare well. The last three games Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Narrowing down the Super Bowl 50 contenders

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
This is my last Wiseguy Report of the year.  That leaves me with two choices – a look back column or a look forward one. I’m a big fan of post-mortems following every NFL betting week; looking to learn from both winners and losers.  But when it comes to looking back over a whole season or a full year?  It’s harder (for me at least) to learn lessons in the aggregate; much easier when I condense those lessons down to individual games.

After all, that’s what a season is – dozens of individual betting decisions; made one at a time.  So, while I’ve enjoyed one of the best NFL seasons of my handicapping career, there’s no point in looking back.

Sure, we can identify the worst beat of the year, that’s always fun.  I’d nominate anyone who had Lions and Under when they led Green Bay wire-to-wire on Thursday Night Football….until Aaron Rodgers Hail Mary touchdown pass with no time left on the clock that turned Lions and Under into Packers and Over.  Apologies to anyone who had St Louis plus the points at Green Bay in Week 5, a close second on my list.  But the better way Read more

GoDaddy.com Bowl Betting Preview: Georgia Southern Eagles vs. Bowling Green Falcons

GoDaddy.com Bowl - Mobile, AL
Georgia Southern vs. Bowling Green
Wednesday, December 23, 5 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Bowling Green -7  O/U 65
CRIS Current: Bowling Green -7 O/U 63.5
Recommendation: Georgia Southern

This year’s GoDaddy.com Bowl in will feature the contrasting styles of Bowling Green and Georgia Southern. The Falcons boast one of the most potent passing games in the country with MAC Offensive Player of the Year Matt Johnson throwing to a foursome of receivers that caught a combined 294 passes.  The polar opposite will take place for Georgia Southern as the Eagles led the nation with 355.6 ypg on the ground at nearly 6.5 ypc.

Both teams must deal with the exit of their head coach as BG’s Dino Babers took off for Syracuse and GSU’s Willie Fritz made the odd choice to take over at Tulane. Dell McGee (former running backs coach) will call the shots for Georgia Southern and Brian Ward (former defensive coordinator) will do the same for Bowling Green.

It’s generally understood that Bowling Green will move the ball through the Read more
