NFL Gambling Alert: Tennessee's Locker questionable vs. Indianapolis

09.26.2014     09:15 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It wouldn't be an NFL season without seeing Tennessee quarterback Jake Locker hurt before Week 5. Locker (wrist) didn't practice Thursday but still has a shot at playing on Sunday. If Locker is unable to go, Charlie Whitehurst would get the starting nod. The Colts were bet up from -7 to -7.5/-8. The total also moved from 45.5 to 46.5.

That’s left Whisenhunt hopeful that Locker “has a chance” of playing against their AFC South opponent and that Saturday will be the big day when it comes to determining his status. With a wrist injury on his throwing arm, Locker’s ability to grip the ball will be one of the questions that the team has to answer when making their call for Sunday.

College Football Betting Preview: Arkansas Razorbacks vs. Texas A&M Aggies

Arkansas vs. Texas A&M (Arlington)
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
Texas A&M -10 O/U 72
CRIS Current: Texas A&M -9 O/U 71.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Texas A&M -14
Paul Stone's Recommendation: Arkansas

In a renewal of an old Southwest Conference rivalry, the sixth-ranked Texas A&M Aggies (4-0) and the vastly-improved Arkansas Razorbacks (3-1) bring contrasting offensive styles to Saturday's SEC West showdown at Arlington's AT&T Stadium.

On one hand, Kevin Sumlin's Aggies spread the field, depending heavily on sophomore quarterback Kenny Hill to distribute the ball to a host of talented receivers utilizing a scheme designed to fatigue the defense and prevent substitutions.

Meanwhile, second-year Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema has brought his old-style smashmouth ground game to the Ozarks from Wisconsin. After going winless in SEC play in his Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Oregon State Beavers at USC Trojans

Oregon State at USC
Saturday, 7:30 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
USC -10 O/U 51.5
CRIS Current: USC -9.5 O/U 55.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: USC -10
Ian Cameron's Recommendation: Over

The USC Trojans will be looking to bounce back strong following their bye week as they host Oregon State in this PAC-12 matchup. It’s the first game for USC since its shocking 37-31 loss at Boston College which should provide a requisite level of focus and intensity. USC was shredded for 506 total yards (425 of them on the ground) by Boston College and I expect the defense to perform better this week with extra time to prepare. But Oregon State’s offense should still be able to score some points with senior quarterback Sean Mannion at the controls. Mannion has had another good start to the season throwing for 301 ypg and 8 yppa and Oregon State should benefit from having more balance in their offense this Read more

College Football Betting: Iowa State tries to tame Baylor's up-tempo offense

09.25.2014     07:55 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Baylor -21 at Iowa State O/U 68.5

Easier said than done but Iowa State appears to have the right mentality heading into Saturday's game vs. Baylor. The Cyclones want to slow the pace of the game down and keep Baylor's offense off the field. In last year's 71-7 win, the Bears ran 92 plays to ISU's 60.

“We have to shorten the game,” Rhoads said.

“I think it has been evident through three games this far of the season that we are not operating at a fast tempo,” Rhoads continued. “(We haven’t) had a lot of snaps where we are above 20 seconds (on the play clock) or not even above 10 when we are snapping the ball.”

College Football Betting Preview: Maryland Terrapins at Indiana Hoosiers

Maryland at Indiana
Saturday, 10:30 am PT - Big Ten
CRIS Opener:
Indiana -2.5 O/U 64.5
CRIS Current: Indiana -5 O/U 69.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Indiana -0.5
OTTO Sports' Recommendation: Maryland

Is Indiana ready for primetime? Bettors seem to think so as they bet Saturday's game from -2.5 to -4.5. What's fresh in everyone's mind is the Hoosiers' monumental upset win at Missouri. But let's not forget that IU is two weeks removed from getting bet as a road favorite and losing outright to Bowling Green. And while Indiana is a program on the upswing, bettor should no doubt approach with caution as prosperity can be a difficult thing to handle following years of ineptitude.

Maryland is off a great showing of its own with a 34-20 win at Syracuse. The box score tells as different story as the Terps were outgained 589-369. But Maryland played it conservative in the second half and was content Read more

College Footbal Betting Preview: Northwestern Wildcats at Penn State Nittany Lions

Northwestern at Penn State
Saturday, 9 am PT - Big Ten
CRIS Opener:
Penn State -10 O/U 44.5
CRIS Current: Penn State -10.5 O/U 45
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Penn State -12
Andrew Lange's Recommendation: Penn State

Without a large margin for error, we're starting to see Northwestern's multiple "issues" heavily impact the play on the field. It is hard to say how much internal damage was caused by the offseason players' union. Certainly not a positive. There have also been rumblings that Pat Fitzgerald's vocal frustration has irked various players. The play on the field has been lacking due to the loss or injury of multiple "playmakers." And as mentioned in yesterday's blog, quarterback Trevor Siemian College Football Northwestern Wildcats Penn State Nittany Lions Big Ten Andrew Lange

College Football Betting: Minnesota's inept offense prompts Michigan money

09.24.2014     06:32 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We had no idea a negative QB rating was even possible at the collegiate level. But that is exactly what Minnesota registered in last week's 24-7 win over San Jose State. Freshman Chris Streveler completed 1 of 7 passes for 7 yards. Boasting a ratio that would make any Service Academy jealous, the Gophers ran the ball 58 times for 380 yards. Streveler will get the nod again this weekend at Michigan if Mitch Leidner (turf toe, MCL) can't go. The Wolverines aren't exactly a "bet on" team these days but have been steamed up from -8 to -12. And if there has been one positive for UM this season it's stopping the run (80.3 ypg allowed).

“We’re not going to be able to compete against a Big Ten school completing one pass,” coach Jerry Kill said.

“If Mitch is healthy, he’s going to play, as usual,” Streveler said. “I go in every week, preparing like I’m the starter, and if I have to be ready, I’ll be ready.”

College Football Gambling: Northwestern offense stuck in neutral

09.22.2014     02:38 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Bettors should keep an eye on Northwestern quarterback Trevor Siemian who has been dealing with an ankle injury that clearly impacted his play in last week's lackluster 24-7 win over Western Illinois. Siemian completed 15-of-25 passes for only 177 yards (4.7 ypa). This week's opponent, Penn State currently ranks 10th nationally in total defense (270.8 ypg allowed).

“He’s coming off an ankle injury. He didn’t drive off his back foot. He was lazy with his feet, and he didn’t drive the ball. I’m proud of him for being out there. The reason why he played is he needed to be out there," Fitzgerald said. "We don’t have rhythm and timing right now as a skill group. Conventional wisdom would say, ‘Sit him down, you’re playing an FCS team.’ Well that’s why convention is convention and reality is reality. If we’re clicking and scoring 500 points a game, maybe that’s what we do. But we’re not in rhythm, and we’re not doing what we need to do."

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NFL Week 3 Betting Recap

09.22.2014     07:51 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We’re three weeks into the new NFL season and I’ve already got some pointspread and totals streakers to write about.  Three teams are 3-0 ATS, four more have yet to cover a pointspread. Four teams are 3-0 to the Over; five more are 3-0 to the Under. Who are these teams and why are they trending early? Most importantly, can we expect them to continue to trend in the same direction moving forward? Read on to find out.

I’ll focus here on the pointspread streakers, saving the totals streakers for a thorough look next week. That being said, I will list the early season totals streakers here, so you don’t have to go through the trouble of looking them up. 3-0 to the Over: Browns, Jaguars, Colts and Eagles. 3-0 to the Under: Bengals, Cardinals, Bills, Vikings and Titans.

The NFL is a parity filled league, and pointspreads can adjust rather dramatically based on a single early season performance. A big Week 1 or Week 2 victory, therefore, makes it more difficult to cover the spread the following week. Only three teams have managed to avoid an ATS defeat through the first three weeks of the season. All three of those squads were less than Read more
