College Football Betting Preview: Alabama Crimson Tide at Tennessee Volunteers

Alabama at Tennessee
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
Alabama -10.5 O/U 60
CRIS Current: Alabama -13 O/U 57
Recommendation: Over

The Tennessee defense is in a world of hurt right now, terrible news as they take on the Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday.  The Vols stop unit has, quite simply, been gutted with key injuries.  They’ve lost Cameron Sutton, Jalen Reeves-Maybin and Cortez McDowell from their secondary; Quar’te Sapp and Darrin Kirkland from their linebacking corps and Danny O’Brien from the defensive line.  Sutton, Sapp and O’Brien have all been lost to season ending injuries, losing top playmakers from all three defensive units.

Of that group, only McDowell has a chance to play this week, and even that’s very ‘iffy’.  No surprise, then, that the Vols surrendered ten plays of 20 yards or more in their double overtime loss at Texas A&M last Saturday.  And, after that wild A&M on the heels of the wild Georgia game and the wild Florida game; a Vols defense that hasn’t had a bye yet certainly could use Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Ohio State Buckeyes at Wisconsin Badgers

Ohio State at Wisconsin
Saturday, 5 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Ohio State -10 O/U 48
CRIS Current: Ohio State -10 O/U 44
Recommendation: Ohio State

The Wisconsin Badgers return to the gridiron off a much-needed bye week. The offense was exposed in a big way in their 14-7 loss to Michigan; 159 total yards for 3.0 yards per play. Quarterback Alex Hornibrook completed just 9-of-25 passes for 88 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. The no. 2 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes are coming off a non-covering 38-17 victory over Indiana. It was by OSU standards a flat performance after beating Rutgers 58-0. For the first time all season, the offense struggled as the Hoosiers held the Buckeyes to a season-low 383 yards. The storyline was the defense as Indiana managed only 281 yards and coughed up the ball twice.

Despite a poor offensive showing last week, the Buckeyes will have a significant edge this weekend. The offense has generated 28 plays of 20 yards or more and 12 plays over 30 yards this season. The Badgers meanwhile are one of the least explosive teams in the Big Ten with only six plays Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Michigan Wolverines at Rutgers Scarlet Knights

Michigan at Rutgers
Saturday, 4 pm PT - ESPN2
CRIS Opener:
Michigan -25.5 O/U 56
CRIS Current: Michigan -30 O/U 53
Recommendation: First half over

With the exception of last week's 14-7 win over Wisconsin, Michigan has played the role of bully this season with wins by 39, 17, 37, and 60. There were 149 points score in the first half of those four games (37.3 avg) with a vast majority courtesy of the Wolverines. Head coach Jim Harbaugh came into the season with a reputation of playing it vanilla with a big lead. This year, he's been far more aggressive. We've even seen multiple instance in which backup quarterback John O'Korn entered the game late during a blowout and proceeded to take shots down field.

This week's opponent, Rutgers, offers another opportunity to “name the score.” The Scarlet Knights managed just seven points against Iowa and were shutout last week in Columbus, 58-0. Chris Ash has his work cut out for him and it's tough to envision his squad having much success in this contest. And while much of the focus is on the offense's struggles, the Scarlet Knights' defense Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Oklahoma Sooners vs. Texas Longhorns

Oklahoma vs. Texas - Dallas
Saturday, 9 am PT - FS-1
CRIS Opener:
Oklahoma -10.5 O/U 72
CRIS Current: Oklahoma -10 O/U 73
Recommendation: Over

To say that the Longhorns new uptempo offense has paid immediate dividends is something of an understatement.  The Longhorns rank among the Top 10 teams in the country in pace ratings, averaging just shy of 85 plays per game.

Sterlin Gibert’s attack is averaging 38 points per game in regulation through their first four contests, behind the strong arm of Shane Buechele and the D’Onta Foreman/Chris Warren running back duo, combining to average nearly 6.5 yards per carry.  And these aren’t padded numbers against bottom tier FCS schools or Sun Belt squads either – three of the Longhorns first four opponents were Power 5 conference bowl teams last year (Notre Dame, Cal and Oklahoma State).

Oklahoma is no stranger to playing uptempo football, even though their full season pace rating isn’t quite as high as that of Texas.  The Sooners game against uptempo TCU last week produced 98 points, with both teams Read more

NFL Handicapping: Steelers respond, concerns continue for Buccaneers and Panthers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
For this week’s article, I will be discussing a trio of teams that suffered bad Week 3 losses and whether their response in Week 4 was a positive sign moving forward or a warning sign of further problems.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were one of a handful teams pegged for improvement by both the media and bettors during the preseason. After winning six games in 2015, Tampa was bet up from 7 to 7.5 wins in the futures market. And Week 1’s road win against Atlanta only strengthened that opinion. But since then, it’s been a disaster. After getting blown out in Week 2 at Arizona, the Bucs returned home to face Los Angeles in what was an optimal spot for a big effort. Instead, they coughed up 37 points in a loss. Amazingly, Tampa outgained the Rams by over 150 yards, had 12 more first downs, and were even in the turnover battle and still found a way to lose.

Fast forward to to this past weekend and instead of laying -5, Tampa was +3 home underdogs to Denver. Again, it was another situation that suggested a solid effort. But the Broncos dominated from start to finish as Jameis Winston threw two interceptions and posted a dreadful 40.1 QB rating. Winston Read more

NFL Gambling Preview: Buffalo Bills at New England Patriots

Buffalo at New England
Sunday, 10 am PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
New England -6.5 O/U 43.5
CRIS Current: New England -7 O/U 43
Recommendation: Buffalo

The Patriots have survived the Tom Brady suspension pretty darn well, going 3-0 SU and ATS without their four time Super Bowl winning QB. But with Brady on the way back next week, facing a divisional rival with a real chip on their shoulder, I’m expecting the Patriots to be tested on Sunday in a clear flat spot for the home favorite.

New England doesn’t have a healthy quarterback right now. Jimmy Garappolo has been upgraded to probable, but he’s dealing with consistent pain from his shoulder injury. Jacoby Brissett has a bad thumb, and if the rookie third stringer gets playing time here, it’s probably good news for Buffalo backers.

And the Pats are an overvalued commodity this week. Think about their season. They started with an upset win over Arizona, devalued now because Arizona hasn’t looked anything like the elite squad they were last year in early season play. The Pats nearly blew a big lead against Miami, Read more

David Stern softens stance on legalized sports betting

09.30.2016     10:18 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Former NBA Commissioner David Stern spoke about sports betting at the recent Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas. Stern has never been as gung-ho about legalized sports betting as current commish Adam Silver. And Stern seems to be missing the point by claiming that legalization would help curb the amount of gambling connected to organized crime. We've spoke about this before that just because there is legalization doesn't mean that offshore/offscreen world will dissolve. It isn't going anywhere, David. That said, Stern did recognize that interest would only increase with more Sunday afternoon couch bettors tuned in to the Cleveland-Washington game.

“There’s a lot out there that’s being bet illegally,” Stern said during a 50-minute talk with American Gaming Association President Geoff Freeman in front of about 500 show attendees. “If we can fix this, it would be a big hit to organized crime.”

“I believe there’s going to be a lot more competition for the sports viewers,” he said.

College Football Betting Preview: Florida Gators at Vanderbilt Commodores

Florida at Vanderbilt
Saturday, 9 am PT - SEC
CRIS Opener:
Florida -9.5 O/U 41.5
CRIS Current: Florida -10/5 O/U 40.5
Recommendation: Florida

Florida returns to the Volunteer State for the second week in a row, hoping for better results than last week’s 38-28 loss to Tennessee.  The Gators got off to a big 21-0 lead in the second quarter but after halftime, the wheels fell as Tennessee scored 35 straight points. The second half turnaround was amazing as Florida had outgained Tennessee 300-162 in the first half and averaged 8.8 yards per play.  Florida played very conservatively in the second half on offense while Tennessee came out ferociously and it showed, with the Gators having five straight three-and-outs.

I am going to overlook the second half of that game and focus on what Florida did in the first half and in their other games this season. They had allowed 14 points in the first three games prior to Tennessee and are made up of some solid NFL prospects. Vanderbilt does not pose anywhere near the threat that Tennessee did with quarterback Joshua Dobbs and his Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Baylor Bears at Iowa State Cyclones

Baylor at Iowa State
Saturday, 9 am PT - FS-1
CRIS Opener:
Baylor -16.5 O/U 59
CRIS Current: Baylor -17 O/U 60.5
Recommendation: Over

It's not too often you see Baylor involved in a game with a total in the low 60's. In fact, Saturday will mark the lowest total for the Bears since midseason 2014. Even last year's trip to Manhattan to face slow paced and ultra-conservative Kansas State State closed 67. Also interesting is the fact that last year's meeting against Iowa State closed 74.5; it landed just short with Baylor winning in Ames, 45-27.

ISU has shown no ability to stop the high octane offenses in the Big XII. Last season, against Texas Tech, TCU, Baylor, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State, the Cyclones allowed 48.6 ppg. And thanks to playing from behind in a majority of those contests, ISU proved capable of putting the ball in the end zone with scores of 31, 21, 27, 16, and 31. In the end, all five of those contests topped 61 points (73.8 average). Against TCU earlier this season, Iowa State coughed up 41 in just over three quarters as the Horned Frogs were content to sit on the ball late. Read more
