NCAA Tournament Gambling: Using Power Ratings to reseed the matchups

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Here's a different way to look at the NCAA Tournament. We took the 68 teams that made the Big Dance and listed tournament style matchups (1 vs. 16, 2 vs. 15, etc.) based on Ken Pomeroy's power ratings. Looks just a tad different that what the selection committee chucked out there, no?

1. Gonzaga vs. 16. UC Davis/Mount St. Mary's
1. Villanova vs. 16. Texas Southern/South Dakota State
1. North Carolina vs. 16. New Orleans/North Dakota
1. Kentucky vs. 16. NC Central/Jacksonville State

2. West Virginia vs. 15. Northern Kentucky
2. Louisville vs. 15. Kent State
2. Virginia vs. 15. Troy
2. Wichita State vs. 15. Iona

3. Florida vs. 14. Winthrop
3. Kansas vs. 14. Florida Gulf Coast
3. SMU vs. 14. New Mexico State
3. Duke vs. 14. Bucknell

4. Baylor vs. 13. East Tennessee State
4. St. Mary's vs. 13. Vermont
4. Purdue vs. 13. USC
4. Oregon vs. 13. UNC Wilmington

5. Iowa State vs. 12. Princeton

College Basketball Gambling: Who Has What It Takes to Win the Big Dance Part I

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
History shows us many things about what it takes to be a champion.  I write this article every year, and in every year except for two, I have been able to identify the eventual NCAA National Champion among my elite level teams. Both exceptions were the same team – UConn – making miracle runs to win the title as prohibitive longshots.

Three years ago, Kevin Ollie’s Huskies were on the ropes in their tourney opener against St Joe’s, needing a late rally just to send the game to overtime.  Three weeks later, they cut down the nets as national champs at Jerry’s World in Arlington.  I didn’t see it coming.  Neither did the betting markets, with UConn priced in the 100:1 longshot range prior to the tournament.  And if a longshot like that wins every coinflip game in the tourney this year, I’m not likely to get it right either.

Here is a list of the last 19 NCAA champions and the teams they beat in the title game: Kentucky over Utah in ’98, UConn over Duke in ’99, Michigan St over Florida in 2000, Duke over Arizona in ’01, Maryland over Indiana in ’02, Syracuse over Kansas in Read more

College Basketball Gambling: How to bet Match Madness

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
College Basketball conference tournaments heat up this week with the power conferences getting underway. It’s the the perfect time to look at some of the key handicapping factors that can assist in bettors profiting during the postseason.

While everyone is obviously motivated during the postseason, there are situations where teams may be looking towards bigger and better things. Earning one of the four no. 1 seeds is something most teams seek but it isn’t always worth the emotional and physical drain of winning three games in three days. Then there are those teams who aren’t in the hunt for a top seed but also comfortably in the Big Dance. Their performance in the conference tournament has the ability to impact their seed but this profile is very vulnerable to upsets against lesser teams desperate for wins.

Depth and injuries is another key factor when handicapping March. Teams that make a run in the conference tournaments can play as many as four games in four days. There are going to be a handful of first round upsets in these conference tournaments and the first thing I’m looking at with the winner is how many minutes the starters Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Power conference tournament odds

03.06.2017     09:22 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Power conference tournaments get underway this week. Let’s take a quick look at each league’s future odds.

ACC - This year's tourney takes place at Brooklyn's Barclays Center. All 13 teams are in the first with the top four seeds (North Carolina, Florida State, Notre Dame, and Louisville) receiving byes to the quarterfinals. Top seed UNC is the betting favorite at +145 followed by Louisville (+270) and fifth seed Duke (+280).

PAC-12 - The league returns to Las Vegas but will play in the new T-Mobile Arena. Oregon is the top seed and the betting favorite at +125 followed by third seed UCLA (+140) and second seed Arizona (+210). The last three title games have featured a 1 vs. 2 matchup.

Big Ten - Oddly, the conference tournament will be held at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. Top seed Purdue is the favorite at +145 followed by Wisconsin at +190. Perhaps a good league to take a shot with an underdog as half the league finished 12-6, 11-7 or 10-8.

Big XII - Per usual, the tournament will be held at the Sprint Center in Kansas City and Kansas is the top seed and favorite at even money. Third seed Baylor appears to have Read more

NHL Handicapping: Targeting teams to make money on the second half of the season

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
As the NHL season approaches Wednesday’s trade deadline, it is time to take a look at some teams that I have targeted as “bet on” and “bet against” moving forward.

The Boston Bruins stand out as a potential “bet on” squad. Boston has enjoyed a rejuvenation of energy and team chemistry after dismissing head coach Claude Julien and handing it over to interim Bruce Cassidy. The Bruins are 6-1 since the coaching change and have scored 3+ goals in all but one of those games. Cassidy put an emphasis on wanting his team attack more offensively which explains why they over on a 4-2-1 O/U run under his watch. But while the offense has enjoyed an uptick in production, defense and goaltending that will determine just how far they go. The Bruins have an aging, slow of foot Zdeno Chara anchoring the blue line and a bunch of newcomers and youngsters on the back end. Adam McQuaid and Torrey Krug are solid defenders but this unit is still a work in progress.

The Nashville Predators have underachieved at times this season but have played their best stretch of hockey of the season with three straight wins. Their offense has been on fire of Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Houston Rockets at New Orleans Pelicans

Houston -3.5 at New Orleans O/U 227
Recommendation: Houston

New Orleans may end up being a force to be reckoned with in a month or two.  But tonight’s game against Houston is fraught with problems, leaving Alvin Gentry’s squad as a ‘bet-against’ squad as they try to work DeMarcus Cousins into the flow.

Cousins quote speaks volumes.  “I think it's a great opportunity. I think we both can learn from one another. Our games compliment one another. Being together, I think, is going to make our jobs a lot easier. I'm excited for the opportunity. I think we can wreak havoc on this league. Will it happen overnight? Probably not. But the potential is scary.”  Note his words: ‘Will it happen overnight?  Probably not!”

Alvin Gentry concurs: "It's just a matter of putting it all together and, obviously, there's a chemistry thing. But I don't see that as a problem at all I think their (Davis' and Cousins') games are very complementary and it gives us an opportunity. Also, one of the areas we've struggled in is the rebounding part of it, especially giving up offensive Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Northwestern Wildcats at Illinois Fighting Illini

Northwestern -1.5 at Illinois O/U 135
Recommendation: Northwestern

Second meeting of this in-state battle between Northwestern and Illinois. In the previous contest, two weeks ago in Evanston, the Illini walked out with a 68-61 victory so expect the NU group to be revenge-minded tonight. The Wildcats were minus star guard Scottie Lindsey in the initial matchup but he returned to the starting lineup Saturday and played 24 minutes. With Lindsay back, not only does Northwestern have the leading scorer (15.0 ppg) on the floor tonight but his presence also boosts their defense significantly. Lindsay combined with Vic Law gives NU arguably the best set of wing defenders in the Big Ten which should make life a bit tougher on the Fighting Illini’s perimeter shooting this time around.

Northwestern kept Illinois interior threat Maverick Morgan pretty quiet in the initial meeting holding him to 5-of-12 shooting and only two free throw attempts but the Illini nailed 42% (8-of-21) from three-point land. Have to believe Lindsay’s presence will help quiet the Illinois guards and wing players who accounted for 56 points last Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Washington Wizards at Indiana Pacers

Washington at Indiana +3 O/U 215
Recommendation: Indiana

I haven’t bet against Washington since the calendar turned to 2017.  But this is the spot to fade the Wizards, and the markets seem to be convinced that the Pacers are going to go into the All-Star Break in the midst of a six-game skid.  That gives us ample value to back Indiana as a home dog this evening.

In theory, this is a great spot for Washington.  The Pacers have lost five straight, including a defensive no-show in Cleveland last night; the fifth straight game that Indiana has allowed at least 110 points.  Meanwhile, the Wizards are rested and ready – they’ve only played once since last Friday, a blowout win over OKC that was garbage time by the middle of the third quarter.

But as we clearly saw last night with the Houston-Miami game, an extended rest BEFORE the All-Star Break is not necessarily a good thing – teams lose their focus.  The Rockets were in the exact same spot at the Wizards – coming off a rare, extended rest, having played only one game since last week, a blowout win.  Washington has been as Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Indiana's Crean calls out players

02.15.2017     09:36 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It's a fine line between constructive criticism and throwing your team under the bus. Indiana's Tom Crean appears to have accomplished a little of both following Sunday's home loss to Michigan. The Hoosiers have been hurt by injuries but it doesn't excuse the offense from failing to top 65 points in five of its last six games. IU heads to Minnesota tonight. They are currently +5 underdogs.

“I’ve never coach a team with this lack of maturity when it comes to being able to respond and rebound from when things aren’t going well for them personally. That includes the teams that have won six or eight games.” – Tom Crean, Indiana head coach

“Immaturity in the backcourt. We don’t play both ends of the floor with the same purpose that we have to play [with] when shots are not going down. That has to change” – Tom Crean, Indiana head coach

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Penn State Nittany Lions at Nebraska Cornhuskers

Penn State at Nebraska -4.5 O/U 141
Recommendation: Nebraska

Teams in this contest are on even footing from an overall talent standpoint but willing to take a stance with the home team Huskers tonight for a pair of reasons. Penn State has risen up the Big Ten power ratings ladder over the last couple of games registering an upset home win over Maryland followed an 83-70 win at Illinois on Saturday. However, their current 3-2 SU/ATS stretch could be more a product of a weak schedule rather than massive improvement. A close look shows four of the five recent Nittany Lions games have been against teams in the Big Ten’s bottom five. Maryland is the only team during this span with a record above .500 in league play. Contrary to that, Nebraska enters off of a difficult five game schedule where they faced four teams above .500 in conference action. Included in those contests are a home win over second place Purdue and a 70-69 OT loss at league kingpin Wisconsin. Tonight they get a very young Penn State team inside a sold out Pinnacle Bank Arena so figure Nebraska to play with extreme energy.

Fundamentally, Read more
