College Football Betting Preview: Ole Miss Rebels at Alabama Crimson Tide

09.15.2015     09:14 AM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange blog entry.
Ole Miss at Alabama
Saturday, 6:15 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Alabama -8 O/U 49.5
CRIS Current: Alabama -5.5 O/U 50.5
Recommendation: Under

The Ole Miss Rebels talked all offseason about becoming a high-power, up-tempo offense and through two games, they've been true to their word with back-to-back 70+ point efforts. The competition obviously comes into question with FCS bottom feeder UT-Martin and rebuilding Fresno State as the two victims. Saying this weekend's trip to Tuscaloosa will be a step up in class is an understatement. Alabama did a number on both Wisconsin (268 yards) and Middle Tennessee (275 yards) in its two victories.

Ole Miss pulled off the upset in last year's meeting, 23-17, in Oxford. Alabama had a slight edge in the box score but two Crimson Tide turnovers proved costly. Not sure we can put a lot of stock in that game as both quarterbacks and a number of key skill position player have since left.

My biggest question about Ole Miss is its offensive line. They return virtually everyone from last season and obviously looked good in Weeks 1 and 2. However, I go back Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: How the NFL betting markets have changed

Submitted by Teddy Covers blog entry.
When I first moved to Las Vegas just prior to the 1998 football season, I was not an experienced, seasoned bettor.  There was a TON to learn, and for my first few years in town, I made sure to consume every bit of handicapping material I could find, primarily through books, newsletters and radio.  And just about all of that source material referenced some key NFL concepts for winning.

“Don’t play road favorites; they’re a low expectation wager.”  “Week 1 in the NFL is the lowest scoring week until the cold weather hits – look for Unders, especially with the highest totals.”  “Beware the public teams; you’re laying a premium price to support them.”  “There’s more value in underdogs than in favorites.”  “The key numbers of ‘3’ and ‘7’ are crucial to have working in your favor.”  I could go on and on, but you get the point.  I’m quite confident that 18 years later, many relative newbies continue to rely on very similar concepts.  The conventional wisdom in the sportsbetting world, even for a sport as popular to Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Pittsburgh Panthers at Akron Zips

Pittsburgh at Akron
Saturday, 3 pm PT - ESPN3
CRIS Opener:
Pittsburgh -13.5 O/U 52
CRIS Current: Pittsburgh -11.5 O/U 50
Recommendation: Under

Last year, when the Zips and Panthers squared off, we saw a defensive struggle from start to finish; a 21-10 Zips upset.  Neither team moved the ball consistently, and both squads relied on a dink-and-dunk offense that resulted in a complete dearth of big plays.

It’s one year later.  Akron’s defense is head and shoulders ahead of where it was last year based on talent alone.  Pitt is in their second game under defensive minded head coach Pat Narduzzi, the former Michigan State defensive coordinator, and he’s got the team’s attention coming off a dismal defensive showing Week 1.  Neither team has an elite QB, and Pitt just lost their best offensive weapon, Heisman candidate RB James Conner, to a season ending injury.  Yet this total is still sitting above 50 in most locations, thanks to an influx of Over money on Thursday morning.  That’ll get me into action with a wager on the Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Oklahoma Sooners at Tennessee Volunteers

Oklahoma at Tennessee
Saturday, 3 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Tennessee -1 O/U 61
CRIS Current: Oklahoma -1.5 O/U 64
Recommendation: Oklahoma

Impressive pointspread covering wins posted by each of these teams last week leads into critical early season affair. Bandwagons have been hitched to both Oklahoma and Tennessee since spring practice with the Vols a sexy pick to contend in the SEC East.

Despite the fact that these teams combined to win their respective Week 1games by a combined 100-34 score it stands to reason there were portions of both playbooks that were saved for this matchup. Conference affiliation means next to nothing here since personnel gap in size and speed is slim to none. Matchups inside the schemes, execution of plays, special teams, and number of breaks are going to be the difference makers here so let’s take a look at the on field fundamentals.

Bob Stoops brought in “Air Raid” guru Lincoln Riley to be the Sooners’ new offensive coordinator with games like this in mind. The 32-year-old Riley learned under Mike Leach while at Texas Read more

ESPN's gambling coverage starting to irk folks

09.09.2015     10:26 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
With football season underway terms like "pointspread", "underdog", and "cover" get tossed around pretty loosely by bettors and non-bettors alike. ESPN -- and others -- continue to find ways to interject gambling angles into their coverage because let's be honest, there isn't much to talk about when a four touchdown SEC favorite takes on a team from the Sun Belt. But even if the majority embraces the additional way to look at a game, there are still those who don't find it all that amusing -- particularly those affiliated with the schools we bet on and of course the NCAA.

“Coverage of sports betting has been carefully considered over a long period of time,” the ESPN statement said. “We recognize that fans are increasingly interested in this conversation and that millions engage in legal sports betting. Our coverage has mirrored that larger trend in recent years and this is another step. We will approach this subject the way we do any beat we cover

College Football Betting Preview: Boise State Broncos at BYU Cougars

Boise State at BYU
Saturday, 7:15 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Boise State -2 O/U 56.5
CRIS Current: Boise State -3 O/U 54.5
Recommendation: Under

A lot of angles to consider with this matchup as Boise State travels to BYU. The biggest of course is the season-ending injury to BYU's Taysom Hill. No doubt Hill was a special player but the Cougars have plenty of experience playing without him and during his absence last season, there wasn't a significant drop off in offensive production. In four games with Hill, BYU averaged 450 ypg and 37.5 ppg. In eight games without Hill, BYU averaged 470 ypg and 39 ppg. Freshman Tanner Mangum is slated to take over for hill. Magnum, who just turned 22 years old, comes in highly regarded.

I have my concerns with Boise State's quarterback Ryan Finley who didn't look particularly comfortable in Week 1's narrow win over Washington. Finely threw for only 129 yards on 26 pass attempts including an interception. It was clear in the second half when the Huskies narrowed the margin that head coach Bryan Harsin didn't have a lot of confidence in his sophomore signal Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Iowa Hawkeyes at Iowa State Cyclones

Iowa at Iowa State
Saturday, 1:45 pm PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
Iowa -4.5 O/U 54
CRIS Current: Iowa -3.5 O/U 52.5
Recommendation: Under

From a historical perspective, it's interesting that this weekend's Iowa-Iowa State game is totaled at 52.5 (opened 54). The two squads obviously play one another each season and over the last 10 seasons, not one game was lined above 49.5. Taking it a step further, of those 10 games, not once did the score top 48 in regulation. And there's a logical reason for this: Iowa, who is usually the stronger of the two teams, tends to play at a slow pace with a focus on running the football.

The question now becomes, has anything changed with either squad to warrant the inflated total? Neither squad is tremendous defensively, though as we saw last season, when healthy and at full strength, the Hawkeyes have the ability to be above average. Over its first five games last year, Iowa allowed 17.2 ppg. It wasn't until they started playing capable and sometimes dynamic offenses that the unit was exposed. I'm not sure Iowa State qualifies as dynamic. Despite playing in a number Read more

College Football Betting Update: Penn State shows no sign of o-line improvement

09.08.2015     07:47 AM     Printer Friendly

So much for an improvement. Penn State made shoring up its offensive line a top priority after 2014's disaster. We won't lay all the blame on the unit during Week 1's loss to Temple, but it certainly was as major issue. The Owls completely dominated the Nittany Lions in the trenches with 10 sacks and only 2.9 yards per carry allowed. PSU has now allowed 54 sacks over its last 14 games.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NFL Power Ratings 1-32

09.07.2015     08:57 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
The NFL regular season starts on Thursday.  Here’s how I have the 32 teams ranked heading into the campaign, with a quick blurb each squad.

1. New England Patriots - With Tom Brady set to open the season as the starting quarterback, the defending champs are the team to beat, worthy of my #1 ranking heading into the regular season.

2. Seattle Seahawks - Seattle enjoyed the best yards-per-rush differential between offense and defense last year, but they’ve got significant offensive line question marks as they head to St Louis for Week 1.

3. Green Bay Packers - The Packers passing game was second to none in the NFL last year, but the loss of Jordy Nelson leaves Aaron Rodgers without his top target for the entire season.

4. Indianapolis Colts - Most elite contenders face a tougher than average schedule because they’ve got to face other contending teams.  Indy, however, plays only four games against playoff teams from last year.

5. Denver Broncos - Peyton Manning is the oldest starting quarterback in the NFL by a wide margin, and he’s coming off a season where his arm strength noticeably declined down the Read more
