MLB Handicapping Free Play: Houston Astros at Tampa Bay Rays

Houston (Keuchel) +105 at Tampa Bay (Bedard) O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Houston

The Houston Astros will send southpaw Dallas Keuchel and his 2.63 ERA to the hill this afternoon. There’s nothing fluky about Keuchel’s stellar ERA this season (2.95 xFIP). He also sports a 3.6:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio and an MLB-best 63.7% groundball rate among qualified starters. The major reason for his massive step forward has been the development of a plus slider which has been his go-to strikeout pitch. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay’s Eric Bedard was roughed up in his last start against Baltimore – a common theme and one that can be expected to continue this afternoon.  Bedard obviously doesn’t have the stuff he once possessed with a fastball that barely tops out at 90 mph and a slider with minimal bite. He’s currently showing a 4.33 ERA but that number is really iffy moving forward. Note too that Bedard has been a fly ball pitcher for much of the season and yet Read more

Milwaukee (Gallardo) -115 at Arizona (Anderson) O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Over

It has without a doubt been a struggle for Yovani Gallardo this season but even after a pair of good outings against Pittsburgh and Cincinnati, I'm not ready to declare that he's righted the ship. Gallardo has an overall ERA of 3.51 but a FIP of 4.28 which is almost a run higher. His performance against the Pirates in particular where he threw 7 scoreless innings needs to have an asterisk placed next to it because both teams that day were rushing at the plate because the game was threatened to be delayed due to rain. Gallardo allowed 4 runs or more in back-to-back road starts prior to that outing in Pittsburgh and he's allowed 34 hits and struck out just 22 in 35 innings pitched on the road. Arizona scored 7 runs on 13 hits in 12 innings in the two times they faced Gallardo last season and should be in for some offensive success today. On the flip side, Chase Anderson gets the call for the Diamondbacks and he's Read more

Cincinnati (Simon) at Pittsburgh (Volquez) -115 O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Over

At this stage of the campaign, the betting markets have more than enough data to concentrate on full-season numbers.  But the full season numbers for both Cincinnati and Pittsburgh offensively don’t tell the story of the appropriate current form of these two lineups today.  That leaves legitimate value betting the Over on ‘baseline’ totals for both squads; two teams that are consistently lined in the same 7 or 7.5 range where we find them today.

The Reds couldn’t hit their way out of a wet paper bag for the better part of the first two months of the season.  Their aggregate numbers show Cinci ranked #29 out of 30 MLB teams in runs scored this year – only the Padres have gotten less production from their lineup.  But with Joey Votto off the DL, the Reds bats have come to life, pounding out 36 runs in their last six games.   As a team, Cinci Read more

World Cup Gambling: First round matchups feature plethora of goals

06.17.2014     08:35 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Favorites and the OVER have been the theme of the World Cup thus far. That's not to say there haven't been upsets with the Netherlands crushing defending champ Spain, Costa Rica knocking off Uruguay, and the USA of course taking down Ghana as small underdogs. Scoring has been way up (3.14 gpg) with only two games featuring less than three goals.

“The World Cup is more popular than ever with bettors,” said Jimmy Vaccaro, a legend in our business. “The perfect example was a parlay that was written Sunday, where the guy said ‘Jimmy, give me a $200 three-team parlay. I’ll take the Spurs, and Jimmy, let’s go with the Braves, and give me Bosnia too.’

“It was just a unique sign of how things have transformed over the years with betting on the World Cup being bigger than ever.”

Colorado (Matzek) +170 at LA Dodgers (Ryu) O/U 7
Recommendation: Colorado

Hyun-Jin Ryu's overall numbers look good (3.33 ERA, 2.90 FIP) but since returning from injury he's been hit around some and faced a very favorable schedule with games against the Mets, Reds (twice), and the Pirates. In two starts against Colorado, Ryu allowed 17 hits in 11 IP with only five strikeouts. I've also noticed a small drop in velocity with Ryu. The Rockies will be getting a third look against him and should be able to plate some runs. Colorado rookie Tyler Matzek looked very good in his MLB debut – 7 IP, 2 ERs, and 7 Ks in Coors Field against Atlanta. I'm a big fan of first-time lefties and while the Dodgers do have right-handed power, Matzek at night in Dodgers Stadium presents a good opportunity for success. Ultimately this is a value play. Ryu is being priced as a dominant starter vs. a lower-tier pitcher and team but I don't think that is the case. The Rockies aren't the same team away from Read more

NY Yankees (Nuno) at Kansas City (Vargas) -130 O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Kansas City

The Yankees have sunk back down to .500 with seven losses in their last ten games.  The biggest culprit in their recent slump has been an anemic lineup, particularly their struggling ‘middle of the order’ bats.  The Bronx Bombers haven’t been bombing, held to four runs or less in each of those last ten contests.  For the season, the Yanks now rank #13 out of 15 AL teams in runs scored, a bottom tier lineup despite their enormous payroll.

Carlos Beltran has only one hit in 14 at bats since coming off the DL. Mark Teixeira was scratched yesterday with a sore wrist, hitting only .176 in his last 16 games.  Brian McCann is hitting just .225 for the season, well below his career norms.  And Derek Jeter is in the midst of a 3-23 slump over his last six games.   Jeter’s quote speaks volumes: “When guys are scuffling it seems like Read more

Milwaukee (Lohse) -106 at Pittsburgh (Cumpton) O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Milwaukee

The Pirates return home from an extended ten game road trip that saw them play on both coasts; a classic flat spot for any squad, especially a team with a losing record that just earned series wins in San Diego and LA.  And they’ll face a very tough matchup against Kyle Lohse tonight, in the midst of another dominant campaign.

Lohse is coming off a complete game three hit shutout, needing only 93 pitches to dispense of the Cubs.  He’s thrown five consecutive quality starts on the highway and has dominated the Pirates lineup twice already this year: eight hits and two earned runs allowed in 15 innings of work. The Brewers are 9-3 in Lohse’s first dozen starts; 20-8 in his last 28 starts overall.  Very quietly, way underneath the radar Kyle Lohse is a Top 10 starting pitcher in terms of profitability to support here in 2014!

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Preseason NFC Betting News and Notes

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week, I wrote that “the NFL offseason, at least for sports bettors, is essentially over.  Numbers are up, and they’re moving!”

“My first step in assessing the upcoming NFL season begins with a thorough look back at last year.  Every team’s power rating is set, in large part, based on where they finished the previous campaign.  Obviously, adjustments are made for injuries, luck, offseason improvements or declines, coaching changes and the like, but those base power rating numbers factor in what happened in 2013 very heavily.”

Last week, I focused on the 16 teams from the AFC.  In this week’s Vegas Wiseguy Report, I’ll pass along a tidbit or two from each of the 16 NFC teams in regards to last year.  My focus is on things that are NOT likely to repeat the same way in 2014.  And this week, I’ll do my absolute best to avoid egregious errors like my ‘San Diego didn’t make the 2013 playoffs’ Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Los Angeles Angels at Oakland A's

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
LA Angels (Weaver) at Oakland (Gray) -135 O/U 7
Recommendation: Oakland

Afternoon start in Oakland as the A's go for the three-game sweep of the Angels. The first two games of the series were all Oakland with 9-5 and 11-3 victories. We'll throw our support the A's way as young gun Sonny Gray takes on veteran Jered Weaver. In looking through Weaver's game log this is arguably his toughest test of the season – on the road vs. left-handed heavy Oakland. Let's also not forget the day time environment at Oakland Coliseum which tends to help the ball carry more. Weaver of course a fly baller suited more for night games in Anaheim. Overall Weaver has been very solid this season with a 2.99 ERA. But he's also been a tad fortunate with a .225 BABIP. On the flip side, Oakland's Sonny Gray is a less than ideal matchup for the Angels. Gray is first and foremost a groundballer (56.95%) and second, filthy against right-handers (.205 BA/.304 SLG) – a key with the big bats of Mike Trout (? Read more
