College Football Gambling: Missouri fires defensive coordinator

09.12.2017     08:19 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Another situation where when things go south, shore it up by canning a coordinator. After last week's 31-13 home loss to South Carolina, Missouri parted ways with defensive coordinator DeMontie Cross. Ironically, it was one of the Tigers' betting showings defensively as it held the Gamecocks to a respectable 359 total yards (5.28 ypp). Head coach Dave Odom claimed the decision to fire Cross was based solely on "philosophical differences." We'll take a guess at what those difference were: Cross pleads with OC to slow down the pace and give his defense a fighting chance. Odom says, quit bitching and deal with it. Saturday's total vs. Purdue was peppered up from 71 to 78.5. Mizzou is currently -7.5 home chalk.

“I don’t know if you ever can say it’s the right time or the wrong time,” Odom said. “I know that the staff we have in place, I’m confident that we can go do what we need to do in order to give ourselves the chance to be successful.”

College Football Handicapping: Illinois goes young, starts season 2-0

09.12.2017     08:10 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Looks like Illinois head coach Lovie Smith is doing everything in his power to NOT play players left over from the Tim Beckman regime. To his credit, the Illini are off to a 2-0 start including last week's 20-6 outright win over Western Kentucky as +6 home chalk. Illinois is currently a +18 road underdog for Friday's game at South Florida.

The nine freshmen Illinois has used in its starting lineup through two games are more than any team in the country. So far, 17 true freshmen, nine redshirt freshmen, two first-time sophomores and two first-time juniors have played, making it 30 players who have made their Illini debuts in the first two games.

College Football Betting Preview: Stanford Cardinal at USC Trojans

Stanford at USC
Saturday, 5:30 pm PT - FOX
CRIS Opener: USC -5.5 O/U 54.5
CRIS Current: USC -5.5 O/U 54.5
Recommendation: USC

Key early season conference tilt in the PAC-12 with Stanford heading to USC. The Cardinal got the better of the Trojans last season, 27-10, in a similar conference opener setting. The results should reverse on Saturday as Stanford has the dubious task of coming in off of what I believe to be an unproductive bye week after opening the season with a 62-7 blowout win in Australia over weakling Rice. Last season, Stanford opened with a win over Kansas State, had a bye week, and they dispatched the Trojans in Palo Alto. While that appears similar situation-wise, there are some distinct differences. For one, Stanford never left campus. Their win over Kansas State was at home, followed by a bye, and then another home game vs. USC. And the Wildcats served as a "real" opponent, one that no doubt helped better prepare Stanford for its looming matchup against the Trojans. There was no resistance whatsoever in Week 1 as Rice grades out as one of the worst Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Florida Atlantic Owls at Wisconsin Badgers

Florida Atlantic at Wisconsin
Saturday, 9 am PT - Big Ten Network
CRIS Opener: Wisconsin -33 O/U 57.5
CRIS Current: Wisconsin -31.5 O/U 60
Recommendation: Wisconsin

It was a nightmare matchup in Week 1 for Florida Atlantic as offensive-minded first-year head coach Lane Kiffin was tasked with game planning for Navy's option. The Owls managed to take a 10-7 lead midway through the second quarter but proceeded to be outscored 35-9 the rest of the way. The Midshipmen finished with 526 yards at 6.7 yards per clip. Now, FAU must figure out a way to stop an even more potent offense that can not only run the football but pass as well.

The Badgers struggled early on in Week 1 against Utah State and didn't score their first points until less than two minutes to go in the first half. Despite that, Wisconsin rolled up 59 points and and an ultra-balanced 234 yards on the ground and 244 yards through the air. While game planning for Navy is tricky, at least FAU could focus most of its efforts on stopping the run. The Owls' porous pass defense won't be able to hide on Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Pittsburgh Panthers at Penn State Nittany Lions

Pittsburgh at Penn State
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener: Penn State -17 O/U 67
CRIS Current: Penn State -21.5 O/U 64
Recommendation: Under

Last season, Pittsburgh was involved in exactly one "under" against FBS competition; a 31-24 bowl loss to Northwestern that had plenty of chances late to cash an "over" late. There were a number of reasons behind such a strong trend. For starters, the Panthers scored big both literally and figuratively with the hiring of offensive coordinator Matt Canada who is one of the brightest minds in the game. He took a below average offensive (82nd, 377.5 ypg) and helped produced one of the bigger spikes in production in the country (38th, 446.8 ypg). Pitt averaged more yards per play (6.71) than Alabama, Oregon, and Florida State and was one of only 11 teams to net more than 40 ppg. But that scoring output didn't necessarily equate to whom Pitt really was. Based on Pitt's total yardage, the offense "should" have averaged closer to 30 ppg but if you remember anything about the 2016 season you're well aware that craziness was the Read more

College Football Handicapping: Bettors are all over Oregon Ducks

09.05.2017     11:47 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
After a disastrous 2016 that saw just two pointspread covers in 12 tries, the Oregon Ducks appear to be back in the good graces of bettors. Last Saturday, Oregon rolled up 703 totals yards en route to a 77-21 win over FCS Southern Utah. Oregon opened -31 but closed -39.5. This week, more betting support with the Ducks opening -10 vs. Nebraska and immediately bet up to -14. The Cornhuskers won last year's meeting in Lincoln, 35-32. The game pushed.

College Football Betting Preview: Nevada Wolf Pack at Northwestern Wildcats

Nevada at Northwestern
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT
CRIS Opener: Northwestern -23 O/U 52.5
CRIS Current: Northwestern -24 O/U 60.5
Recommendation: Northwestern

Nevada has been in steady decline since the departure of of longtime head coach Chris Ault. Brian Polian managed to take the Wolf Pack to two bowl games but make no mistake, he wasn't going to take the program to Ault-like levels. And it'll be a tall task for first-year head coach Jay Norvell as well. Norvell inherits a squad that was far worse than its 5-7/3-5 record a season ago. Playing in the far weaker MWC West Division, the Wolf Pack were outgained by 1.4 ypp in league play. As for this year's squad, there are 43 new players that must digest completely new systems on both sides of the ball. One such "system" will be the famed/doomed "Air Raid" offense. Offensive coordinator Matt Mumme, son of Hal, says he wants to run 85-90 plays per game. That's a dangerous recipe for a squad that still doesn't have a clear cut starter at quarterback, lost it's top running back, and projects to have one of the weakest defenses Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Ohio State Buckeyes at Indiana Hoosiers

Ohio State at Indiana
Thursday, 5 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener: 53
CRIS Current: 56.5
Recommendation: Under

The Indiana Hoosiers certainly weren’t an Under team in the Kevin Wilson era. Wilson emphasized pushing the pace on offense, and the Indiana defense paid the price, allowing at least 33 points per game in the first five years that Wilson was in Bloomington.

That all changed last year. First year defensive coordinator Tom Allen actually had some talent to work with and he crafted a truly dramatic improvement . After allowing 38 points and 510 yards per game in 2015, the Hoosiers allowed only 27 points and 380 yards per game last year.

The Indiana defense is primed to be even better in 2017. Allen is now the head coach, and the team has taken a ‘defense first’ mentality throughout camp. Indiana returns nine starters on their stop unit, seven of them seniors. Expect the Indiana defense to be improved once again in 2017; their best defense in more than a decade.

Kevin Wilson is now Ohio State’s offensive coordinator, Read more

College Football Handicapping: Wisconsin's offenses wants to be more dynamic

08.29.2017     12:49 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
You don't generally think of "explosiveness" when handicapping Wisconsin's offense. Last season, the Badgers recorded only 23 plays of 30 yards or longer; similar to that of Vanderbilt, South Carolina, and Kansas. This year's group vows to create more "big plays." Saturday's opponent, Utah State, was one of the better teams nationally in 2016 at not allowing big gainers (only 45 plays of 20+ yards).

“We need to get back to being explosive, not just being a defensive team,” redshirt junior offensive lineman Michael Deiter said. “We need to take games over (offensively) and that is something we’ve been working at for two years.”

“Obviously, you can take a defense’s will away by driving 18 plays,” Deiter said. “But you can also take a defense’s will away by going out (scoring) in three plays.
