NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Tampa Bay Lightning at New York Islanders

Tampa Bay at NY Islanders -110 O/U 5
Recommendation: New York

The New York Islanders head back home to Brooklyn for Game 3 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Isles picked up a 5-3 road win in Game 1, chasing Lightning goalie Ben Bishop out of the contest as he allowed four goals on just 13 shots. Tampa rallied back to win Game 2 by a score of 4-1. Both contests have been very physical at both ends of the ice and the Islanders have done well to draw penalties and score on the power play this postseason. New York has scored at least one goal on the man-advantage in both games of this series and in five of its last six games overall. They’ve also gone 12-6 in their last 18 games at the Barclays Center and have won five of their last eight games overall while Tampa Bay has lost eight of their last nine road meetings against the Isles and four of their last six games overall as a visitor. The Lightning went off around -160 series favorites but it’s clear this is a far more even matchup. To get the Islanders at a pick ‘em on their home ice offers solid betting value.

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Anaheim Ducks at Nashville Predators

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Anaheim at Nashvile +100 O/U 5
Recommendation: Nashville

The Western Conference Quarterfinal series between the Anaheim Ducks and the Nashville Predators shifts scenes from Orange County to the Music City starting with tonight's Game 3. The Predators pulled off a pair of stunning 3-2 wins to jump out to a 2-0 series lead. Forward Filip Forsberg and defenseman Roman Josi lead all Preds scorers with 3 points, but the star of this series has been goaltender Pekka Rinne who has made 54 saves on 58 shots over his last 120 minutes. The 33-year-old netminder has won each of his last four starts and now returns home to Bridgestone Arena where he has won five of his last seven starts.

Anaheim has won four of its last five games on the road but the Ducks' offense has had trouble converting as of late scoring two goals or fewer in six of their last eight games overall. The stellar  goaltender efforts of John Gibson has been wasted in the last two games because of their inefficiency to find the back of the net. The Ducks are 0-6 all-time when trailing 0-2 in a series while Nashville is Read more

NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs Betting Preview: Detroit Red Wings vs. Tampa Bay Lightning

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Detroit Red Wings (A3) vs. Tampa Bay Lightning (A2)
Series Price: Tampa Bay -155/Detroit +135
Game 1 Price: Tampa Bay -155 O/U 5

The Detroit Red Wings didn’t play their best down the stretch but still managed to slip into the playoffs. They get a rematch with the Tampa Bay Lightning who took down the Red Wings in seven games in last season’s first round en route to a Stanley Cup Finals appearance. The chances of Tampa Bay repeating a trip to the Finals are dubious as the Bolts are dealing with key absences to captain and pending free agent Steven Stamkos, defenseman Anton Stralman, and Tyler Johnson. Stamkos and Stralman are out indefinitely and Johnson is questionable at best to for Game 1. The good news for Tampa Bay is it should have defenseman Victor Hedman and forwards Nikita Kucherov and Ryan Callahan ready for tonight. I was looking to bet against Tampa Bay in the first round from a series price and game-by-game perspective but I did not see enough consistency from the Red Wings late in the season. Yes, Detroit is the much healthier team entering this series but the Red Wings lost their last two regular season games Read more

NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs Betting Preview: New York Rangers vs. Pittsburgh Penguins

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New York Rangers (M3) vs. Pittsburgh Penguins (M2)
Series Price: Pittsburgh -175/New York +155
Game 1 Price: Pittsburgh -145 O/U 5

The injury list is long for both squads entering this series. The New York Rangers have several key players listed as questionable including Eric Staal, Mats Zuccarello, Dan Girardi and captain Ryan McDonagh. None of them are a sure thing to be in the lineup for Game 1 tonight. The Pittsburgh Penguins also have multiple players listed as questionable too including both of their goalies Marc-Andre Fleury and Matthew Murray. It appears Fleury (concussion) has been upgraded to probable.

Pittsburgh closed the regular season as the hottest team in the NHL going 14-2 in its last 16 games. The run was impressive considering they were without Evgeni Malkin who will remain out for the beginning of the postseason. The Penguins put together a strong second line with Nick Bonino, Phil Kessel and Carl Hagelin late in the season. It was a nice compliment to the first-line trio of Sidney Crosby, Patric Hornqvist and Chris Kunitz.

New York knocked off Pittsburgh in five games in the first round of the playoffs Read more

NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs Betting Preview: New York Islanders vs. Florida Panthers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New York Islanders (WC) vs. Florida Panthers (A1)
Series Price: Florida -150/New York +130
Game 1 Price: Florida -140 O/U 5
Series Recommendation: Florida

The Florida Panthers were an afterthought heading into the season but have been one of the biggest surprise stories in the NHL as they captured the Atlantic Division title and home ice advantage the first two rounds. Florida has a nice mixture of veterans and future stars: Jaromir Jagr turned back the clock to have a phenomenal season with a team-leading 66 points in 79 games and Aleksander Barkov, Jonathan Huberdeau, Reilly Smith and Nick Bjugstad are some of the team’s very impressive young talent. The Panthers will miss the services of Vincent Trocheck who suffered a season ending ankle injury last month. The team however showed no drop in performance in his absence as they finished the regular season 7-2.

The New York Islanders are a bit banged up entering the playoffs with question marks everywhere. Top goalie Jaroslav Halak is still out; one of their best defensemen, Travis Hamonic, has a lower body injury and is questionable for the start of this series; and Anders Read more

NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs Betting Preview: Philadephia Flyers vs. Washington Capitals

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Philadelphia Flyers (WC) vs. Washington Capitals (M1)
Series Price: Washington -300/Philadelphia +250
Game 1 Price: Washington -215 O/U 5

The Washington Capitals will finally look to make their first Stanley Cup Finals in the Alex Ovechkin era. They are well positioned to do so with the deepest team they’ve had in recent years and home ice advantage throughout the playoffs. Washington has six 20-goal scorers led by Ovechkin’s incredible 50-goal campaign along with Evgeny Kuznetsov, Nicklas Backstrom, Justin Williams, T.J. Oshie and Jason Chimera. This team has great scoring balance and a strong blue line with John Carlson, Matt Niskanen, Karl Alzner, Nate Schmidt, Dmitry Orlov and Brooks Orpik. Braden Holtby had the best season of any goalie in the NHL from start to finish and tied Martin Brodeur for most regular season wins in a single season.

Philadelphia is very top heavy with its forwards and defense. They have a solid top six led by Wayne Simmonds (32 goals), captain Claude Giroux (team leader in points), Brayden Schenn and Jakub Voracek. However, they have had difficulty receiving scoring from outside that group. The Read more
