Fairway on the Felt: Poker in Las Vegas

Submitted by

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
I’ve been playing profitable poker for years, and with more recent success, I may write and post more on poker. I’ve had to limit my poker coverage due to various commitments along with sports handicapping, but after playing in recent months some of the stories and follies from the felt may have to be brought forward. As you can image, there is often plenty of sports betting talk at the poker table, as poker player’s talk about the games and betting lines. Yet much of the poor reasoning and thought processes of the recreational sports bettor is also found in poor play and decisions at the poker table.

Living in Las Vegas affords us great opportunities to play poker, and for those with patience, discipline and a solid understanding of the ‘fundamentals’ of poker play, there can be plenty of profit and reward.  As I’ve mentioned in the past, there is a strong correlation between sports bettors and poker players. I’ve played and covered events at the Palms in Las Vegas, and they will soon have a new poker room and sports book run by Cantor Gaming. Note recent comments from the new Palms Hotel President, “We wanted the Read more

Palms Casino nears completion of new sportsbook

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Las Vegas' Palms Casino is close to finishing its new Cantor sportsbook.

“First and foremost, it’s going to be improved aesthetically,” Magliarditi said during an interview at the Palms executive offices last week. “It will look like a complete new book. … It’s the first big step where we say, ‘Here are the beginnings of the changes at the Palms.’ Let’s face it, the sports book was pretty beat up. It was hard to even see the TV screens. Now we’ll see state-of-the-art video technology, what you see every time Cantor does a book.“

Los Angeles to Las Vegas high-speed train project in the works

03.26.2012     07:25 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
DesertXpress, a high-speed train that is expected to lure visitors from California to Las Vegas, is close to receiving a massive $4.9 billion loan from the federal government. There are questions though as to whether or not the project makes financial sense (they rarely do). For starters, it is a park-and-ride, meaning residents of Los Angeles will have to drive to about an hour outside the city and then jump aboard the train, which would take about an hour and a half. Once passengers get to Las Vegas, they must then find transportation to a hotel/casino. You can also fly roundtrip from LA to Vegas for about $100.

"It's insanity," says Thomas Finkbiner of the Intermodal Transportation Institute at the University of Denver. "People won't drive to a train to go someplace. If you are going to drive, why not drive all the way and leave when you want?"

March Madness just as big as Super Bowl for Las Vegas bettors

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article from Sports Illustrated on how Las Vegas' oddsmakers view March Madness.

“Four days together,” says Todd Fuhrman, senior race and sports book analyst at Caesar’s Palace, “it’s as big as the Super Bowl for Las Vegas.”

“Yeah, I would say as big as the Super Bowl,” says Jay Kornegay, vice president, race & sports operations at the Las Vegas Hotel & Casino — LVH, as it is now known.

“It’s hard to compare, but it’s probably as big as the Super Bowl,” says Ed Malinowski, director of race & sports book at Stratosphere Casino.

“Bigger than the Super Bowl,” says Johnny Avello, executive director, race & sports operations at the Wynn.

Cantor Gaming creates new fantasy-like betting option for the NBA

03.14.2012     07:37 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Las Vegas' Cantor Gaming is set to unveil a new wagering option for bettors, The Cantor Five.

Cantor will choose a team of five NBA players every day and allow bettors to do the same.

Based on a scoring system similar to fantasy basketball, Cantor’s computer will then formulate a line on the matchup. Bettors can wager on either Cantor’s team or their own against the spread.

“I think it’s a revolutionary product that’s going to blow people away,” Cantor Race and Sports Book Director Mike Colbert said. “It’s fantasy with real money.”

“We shot for March Madness because we knew that’s when everybody was going to be in town,” Colbert said. “There’s no better time to debut this stuff than right now.”

Oddsmakers say that Kentucky to win it all is a bad bet

03.12.2012     06:37 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Local Las Vegas oddsmakers weigh in on this year's NCAA Tournament. A few noted that there is little to no value in supporting tournament favorite Kentucky. The Wynn has the Wildcats at 9-to-5. Offshore, The Greek has +185 and Pinnacle +240.

“It’s an awful price,” said Johnny Avello, director of Wynn’s race and sports book. “I want to raise it, but we’ve taken money on this team the entire year. They bet them at the beginning, they bet them in the middle and they bet them at the end.”

“They are definitely deserving as the top team,” said Jay Rood, sports book director for MGM Resorts. “(Kentucky coach) Calipari has mastered the system of getting top young talent and getting them to buy in by playing impactful and meaningful games right off of the bat. This is one of his best teams yet.”
