College Football Gambling Update: Extra official could help speed up ACC games

07.09.2014     08:59 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Follow up article to Syracuse's desire to push the tempo this season. The ACC is planning to add an eighth official whose main responsibility will be spotting the football after each play. On the surface this should help those teams that want to run the no-huddle.

"I think it's important that we emphasize he purpose of the center judge is not to make the game go faster but to better manage the game, which includes the pace of the game," Rhoads said.

"I feel the fast pace of the game and managing this pace with the eighth official makes sense," Syracuse head coach Scott Shafer said in a text message on Tuesday.

College Football Betting: Cal starts from scratch with new defensive coordinator

07.08.2014     02:11 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Cal's defense was historically bad last season (529.6) with only New Mexico State allowing more yards per game. The Golden Bears were thin on talent, hammered by injuries, and playing for a coach in Sonny Dykes who liked to run an up-tempo offense. Heading into his second season, Dykes obviously needed to make a change and hired former Texas Tech and Cincinnati defensive coordinator Art Kaufman. In 2011, Texas Tech's defense under Kaufman ranked 38th nationally in total offense (367.3 ypg) – nearly 120 ypg better than the previous year. Last season, Cincinnati ranked 9th nationally at 315.6 ypg. Here's a good article on what to expect scheme-wise from the Golden Bears under Kaufman.

College Football Handicapping: Syracuse readies no-huddle offense

07.02.2014     01:06 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
While not full-fledged up-tempo, Syracuse averaged in the upper third nationally in terms of plays per game (73.7 per game) in 2013. But with a first-year head coach and coordinator, the offense struggled for much of the season (21 points or less in eight games). Quarterback Terrel Hunt is back for his sophomore season after completing 61% of his passes (mostly dink-and-dunk) as well as 500 yards on the ground. He appears to be a decent fit for a no-huddle attack. This offseason, the focus has been conditioning as the team preps to play at a quicker pace in 2014.

"We normally do 45 seconds to a minute and a half (of rest), depending on the (length of the) runs," Hicks said. "We've tried to cut that back to 20 seconds in between. They want to run a play every 17 seconds or something like that. We've adjusted toward that. All the hurry-up offenses around the country do that. You can't run them unless you're trained to run them. That's what you hope happens, that you play a defense

College Football Betting: NC State's Brissett projected to be Week 1 starting QB

06.27.2014     12:28 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
NC State will have a new quarterback under center for head coach Dave Doeren's second season. Last year transfers Pete Thomas (Colorado State) and Brandon Mitchell (Arkansas) never panned out (11 TD, 15 INTs combined). This year the Wolfpack will go with another transfer as former Florida signal caller Jacoby Brissett steps in. Brissett has been on campus since January of 2013 and it the unquestioned starter heading into fall camp.

"Most people are going to say, 'Oh just do better than 3-9,'" Brissett said. "That's not a real thing to just say. ... You don't need to be better than every team every day. You just be better than them on Saturday, and make sure what you do Monday through Friday is what's going to make you better on Saturday."

College Football Gambling: Duke expected to contend again in ACC

06.26.2014     02:37 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Expectations have become relatively high for the Duke Devils off of last season's 10-win season (11-3 ATS) and ACC Coastal Division title. The Blue Devils should once again be potent offensively with a lot of key pieces returning. The schedule is favorable with four likely wins to open the season. They get a bye week before facing Georgia Tech and close out the regular season with three straight home games, including a potentially important showdown vs. rival North Carolina. According to The Greek, Duke is the third choice to win the ACC Coastal at +500. Miami is +125 followed by North Carolina at +150. 5Dimes currently has Duke lined a 8.5un-145 season over/under wins. And the Golden Nugget lined only one Duke game: +3 vs. UNC (11/20).

College Football Handicapping: Switching conferences

06.26.2014     07:19 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Good breakdown on ESPN.com of the history of college football teams switching to new BCS conferences – West Virginia (Big East to Big XII) and Texas A&M (Big XII to SEC) two recent examples. In most situations the step up in class resulted in poorer results the first year – Utah, TCU, and Missouri good examples. This year, Rutgers and Maryland join the Big Ten.
