College Football Betting Notes: Illinois undecided on playing in postseason

12.01.2011     12:47 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Couple articles out of Champaign on whether or not Illinois feels up for the postseason following the dismissal of head coach Ron Zook. If they do decide to play, the Illini could find themselves in a bowl game as early as December 17 which doesn't leave a lot of time to prepare. Defensive coordinator Vic Koenning has been named the interim head coach and following a Tuesday meeting, the players seemed split on whether or not to give it a go. And official announcement will be made at a press conference Sunday evening.

“We’ll have a player’s meeting here in the next few days and discuss it amongst our teammates and find out what everybody’s feeling,” Mercilus said. “After what happened in the last 24 hours, there’s a lot of discouragement. Read more

NCAAF Gambling: In-depth stats show Oklahoma State's defense is underrated

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oklahoma at Oklahoma State -3.5 O/U 72.5

Interesting article on how underrated Oklahoma State's defense has been when you account for the fast paced nature of its games and the amount of offensive production opponents put up with the game out of reach.

According to generic NCAA stats, the Cowboys rank 107th in yards per game allowed (453.6) and 62nd in points per game allowed (27.3). Football Outsiders' S&P+ Ratings rank OSU's defense 19th nationally.

On 132 opponent non-garbage drives, Oklahoma State has surrendered 24 touchdowns (18.2 percent of drives) and 30.5 yards per drive. On 22 opponent garbage drives, the Cowboys have given up nine touchdowns (40.9 percent) and 41.5 yards per drive.

NCAAF Handicapping: Weather could get nasty for Oklahoma-Oklahoma State

11.30.2011     12:01 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oklahoma at Oklahoma State -3.5 O/U 72.5

Weather expected to be cold and rainy for this year's edition of the Bedlam Series between Oklahoma and Oklahoma State (game time at 7 pm local). The total opened 74 but has crept down to 72.5 (71.5 at Pinnacle). Local reports point out that Boone Pickens Stadium drains extremely well while OSU quarterback Brandon Weeden said that playing with gloves won't be a problem if the weather turns bad.

The forecast for Saturday is not positive - a game-time temperature in the upper 30s, with a probability of rain. During the great majority of his two seasons as OSU's starting quarterback, Brandon Weeden has played in favorable conditions. The Boone Pickens Stadium turf drains Read more

College Football Handicapping: Teams potentially playing for exercise

11.30.2011     08:33 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The final week of the college football regular season and we take a look at those teams in "playing for exercise" situations. Note that final games (especially at home) can sometimes provide a boost in effort. Also factor in the inflated pointspreads with many of these games projected to be significant mismatches.

UNLV +38.5 at TCU - The Rebels have been halfway competitive at home with wins over Colorado State and Hawaii. They also were tied with San Diego State last week in the third quarter only to allowed 17 unanswered points and miss out on the pointspread cover (+16.5). But back on the road however, where they are on an 11-37 ATS run, it is hard to imagine much of an effort. TCU can clinch the Mountain West title with a win so the Horned Frogs will be at least somewhat motivated. TCU has won the last three games in the series by scores of 48-6, 41-0 and 44-14.

Idaho +20 at Nevada - The Vandals may have given their best effort of the season last week in a demoralizing 49-42 OT home loss to Utah State. Concerns here though for the home side as Nevada saw its WAC title hopes come crashing down with back-to-back Read more

Bettor complains about USC-Utah outcome and it somehow pays off

11.29.2011     08:54 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A disgruntled bettor fought the sportsbooks and surprisingly the sportsbooks didn't win. Some dude who bet $100 on the infamous USC-Utah game complained to the Nevada Gaming Control Board about not being able to cash his 2nd half ticket on the Trojans. Last week he got a check in the mail for $200.

“I’ve lost plenty of money in casinos over the years,” Frith said. “It seems only fair that they actually pay on the occasions I do win.”

College Football Handicapping: Michigan State comfortable with underdog role

11.29.2011     08:22 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Michigan State vs. Wisconsin -9.5 O/U 54.5

Michigan State isn't fazed by its underdog status for Saturday's Big Ten Championship against Wisconsin. The Spartans have beaten the Badgers each of the last two years – both as underdogs. MSU has been installed as an underdog four times this season and posted two outright wins (Wisconsin and Ohio State). The two losses came at Notre Dame and Nebraska.

“No, it doesn’t surprise me,” Michigan State senior safety Trenton Robinson said of the point spread. “Every game we go into, it’s been the same thing for as long as I can remember. Every game that we go into, we are the underdogs. Everybody says that Michigan State’s going to lose by this and that amount.

“We just go out Read more
