Sun Bowl Betting Preview: Virginia Tech Hokies vs. UCLA Bruins

Virginia Tech at UCLA
Sun Bowl - El Paso, Texas
Tuesday, 11 am PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
UCLA -7.5 O/U 47
CRIS Currrent: UCLA -7 O/U 47
Rob Veno's Power Rating: UCLA -7.5
Rob Veno's Recommendation: 1st half UNDER 23.5

Unlike last year’s Sun Bowl where USC was immediately pegged by bettors as a team with zero interest in playing the game, this matchup figures to draw each team’s best effort. The motivation here for UCLA is a 10-win season which would be their first under the direction of head coach Jim Mora Jr. He immensely helped the Bruins’ focus and continuity for this game and beyond by signing a six-year contract extension just a couple of weeks ago. UCLA has exhibited an extreme upbeat attitude since arriving in El Paso. For Virginia Tech, the extra practice sessions and game are being taken seriously as a springboard toward a return to their former status as an ACC Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: How to bet College Football Bowl Games Part II

Submitted by Teddy Covers blog entry.
I wrote an article in this space prior to bowl season (link) detailing my personal strategies for turning a profit during these three weeks of high stakes affairs.  But as I do my research for the upcoming games, I continue to find a bevy of outdated information widely available on the internet; strategies that haven’t worked in years, yet they’ve become a part of the gambling lexicon.

I did a national radio spot last week with a well-known host.  He brought up three strategies as the sharp Vegas method.  None of them work.  In fact, none of them have worked in years. I don’t think the host was an idiot – there’s just a bevy of bad information out there!

So my goal for this week’s column is to poke holes in the outdated information.  The betting markets are not a static entity; always morphing and evolving.  What worked five, ten or twenty years ago doesn’t necessarily work as 2013 shifts to 2014.  And when it Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Cal State Fullerton Titans at UNLV Rebels

12.28.2013     07:58 AM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange blog entry.
Cal State Fullerton at UNLV -13
Recommendation: UNLV

The schedule has been favorable but I've really been impressed with UNLV's play of late. Defensively, the Rebels are extremely talented with the ability to apply pressure and contest shots from all over the court. Their style essentially limits the opposition to one means of scoring and that's the two-point shot as UNLV defends the three extremely well (25.3%) and doesn't foul (15% of opp. points from FTs). Against lower-tier competition, the Rebels have posted wins of 19, 22, 19, 32, 21, and 16. And tonight's opponent Cal State Fullerton isn't far removed from that group of foes. The Titans don't have much of a resume with losses to Seattle (twice), San Jose State (by 22), and College of Charleston (by 13). When asked to step up in class, CSF was handled by USC (76-62) and Marquette (86-66). Fullerton did fall to Miami by two at home but the Hurricanes are a shell of their former selves. On the court, CSF is going to have a difficult time with UNLV's front court as the Titans don't have much of any size. Defensively, the Rebels have a massive edge and if they can continue to knock down outside Read more

Pinstripe Bowl Betting Preview: Rutgers Scarlet Knights vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Rutgers vs. Notre Dame
Pinstripe Bowl - Bronx, NY
Saturday, 9 am PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Notre Dame -15.5 O/U 53
CRIS Current: Notre Dame -14 O/U 53.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Notre Dame -18.5

Instead of playing for a BCS Championship like last year, Notre Dame finds itself in the Bronx at Yankee Stadium facing a .500 team. Sportsbooks have the Irish (8-4 SU, 5-6-1 ATS) favored by -14 or -14.5 with a total of 53.5. Gamblers can back the Scarlet Knights on the money line for a +475 payout (risk $100 to win $475). For first-half wagers, Notre Dame is a 7.5-point chalk with a total of 27.

Brian Kelly’s team had several solid victories this season, including scalps of Southern Cal, Michigan State, Arizona State, and BYU. The Irish lost at Michigan, vs. Oklahoma, at Pitt, and at Stanford.

Senior quarterback Tommy Rees threw for 2,938 yards with a 27-13 touchdown-to-interception ratio. T.J. Read more

Texas Bowl Betting Preview: Syracuse Orange vs. Minnesota Golden Gophers

Syracuse vs. Minnesota
Texas Bowl - Houston, Texas
Friday, 3 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Minnesota -4.5 O/U 47.5
CRIS Current: Minnesota -4.5 O/U 47.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Minnesota -7.5

Motivation is always a key in handicapping bowl games, and that force will be pretty equal in tonight’s Texas bowl matchup between Minnesota and Syracuse.  The Gophers dropped their final two games and are looking for their first nine win season since 2003.  In addition, the Gophers arrive in Houston failing to score an offensive touchdown in their last 10 quarters of play.  Meanwhile, the Orange was fortunate to even go bowling with a season finale victory over Boston College.  However, at 6-6, Syracuse will look to make it back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 2001 when the program was just tailing off as a force in the college football world.

The Gophers have a long history Read more

Michigan vs. Kansas State
Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl - Tempe, Ariz.
Saturday, December 28, 7:15 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Kansas State -3 O/U 56
CRIS Current: Kansas State -4.5 O/U 55.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Kansas State pk
Teddy Covers' Recommendation: Michigan

Michigan’s starting QB Devin Gardner has been sidelined throughout the Wolverines bowl practices, suffering from a nasty case of turf toe.  According to a pre-Christmas report from the Detroit News, Gardner is not likely to play in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl against Kansas State.

Head coach Brady Hoke’s quote upon arriving with the team in Arizona on Monday: “It’s kind of day to day. But right now, if we were playing tonight he would not play. We’re going into it that Shane (Morris) will be the guy.”

While Gardner had a very up and down campaign, he only Read more

College Football Betting: Northern Illinois still irked by poor D vs. Bowling Green

12.20.2013     08:29 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Utah State vs. Northern Illinois -1.5 O/U 58

Northern Illinois picked a bad time for a defensive letdown as Bowling Green racked up 574 yards (8.57 ypp) in the Falcons' 47-27 win in the MAC Championship. The Huskies are calling for a better defensive showing in their upcoming Poinsettia Bowl matchup against Utah State.

"We want to get out there and prove we're better than that," linebacker Michael Santacaterina said. "That would be a long offseason ending (without a win)."

"Communication breakdowns between the secondary and linebackers and linebackers to the D-line," Santacaterina said. "We had mental breakdowns, assignment breakdowns."
