College Football Gambling: Central Michigan running on fumes with no bye weeks

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Ohio -7 at Central Michigan O/U 59.5

Two weeks ago, we blogged about teams that don't have a bye week this season (notice the struggles). Heading down the stretch, injuries and fatigue are obvious concerns with this group. Central Michigan was one of those who qualified as the Chippewas head into Thursday’s game against Ohio playing their third game in 12 days.

"I think the physical part concerns you more than the mental part," Enos said of playing three games in 12 days.

"We are spending less time on the field and more time in the meeting room right now. We haven't had a bye week either, and we don't get one."

NCAAF Pointspread Notes: Oddsmaker explains Michigan-Illinois line

11.10.2011     09:11 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Michigan at Illinois -1

BoDog explains its own theory behind the Michigan-Illinois line. With all due respect to their oddsmakers, there is no "adjustment" for injuries or "big" Michigan following. They simply wait until Monday after CRIS and Pinnacle get settled in, copy their lines, and adjust accordingly. No shame in that. BoDog may be one of only a few shops currently showing Michigan -1, but that can hardly be considered off market. And if money continues to come in on the Illini, expect BoDog and others to follow suit.

"The biggest factor influencing this week's line is the injuries to the Michigan Wolverines at some key positions. Both Denard Robinson and Fitz Toussaint have been banged up this season and we believe will not be as effective as they could Read more

College Football Handicapping Tips: Power Offenses and the 200 Club

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Back in early October, I provided an update on college football teams that both run and pass for at least 200 yards per game. These strong, balanced power offenses have the ability to effectively move the ball both on the ground and through the air, making it more difficult for defenses to game plan and create stops.

At that time of the season, the following teams were members of the “200 club”: Alabama, Baylor, Clemson, Florida, Georgia Tech, Mississippi State, Missouri, Oregon, San Diego State, TCU, Texas, UCF, Utah State, Virginia Tech. Through the early portion of the season, those teams went 26-14 ATS. Many of those teams are still among our list, and I’ve included the updated information and stats for your review along with their ATS records in the chart below.

The ability to gauge statistical profiles more clearly at this stage of the season can help knowing that teams have played more conference games and their body of work is more meaningful. Still, review strength of schedule and match-ups, common opponents and other situational and scheduling spots before blindly betting on these strong offensive teams.

NCAAF Gambling: Oddsmakers have no idea how Penn State-Nebraska will play out

11.10.2011     06:19 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Nebraska -3.5 at Penn State O/U 43

What to do, what to do. Believe it or not, there will be a football game in Happy Valley on Saturday – assuming student don't set fire to the stadium. Oddsmakers readily admit that they have no clue how this one is going to play out. Money as trickled in on Nebraska throughout the week but following Joe Pa's official dismissal, few shops if any budged – not the Paterno has much of an impact from a game planning or X's and O's standpoint anyways. The players no question have been impacted by what has gone down. Whether or not they can process that into positive emotion remains to be seen.

“Those are rare, but they’re common compared to this,” White said. “You always want to have sample size when you’re Read more

NCAAF Handicapping Notes: Troy not ready to give up on the season

11.09.2011     11:58 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
North Texas at Troy -8 O/U 52.5

Troy is clearly down from past editions but if you stroll through the schedule you'll noticed that in a majority of their games they were either asked to step up in class or put in a difficult situational spot. The question though now becomes, can they rally with four games left? At 2-6, the Trojans are a long shot to make a bowl game even if they win out, and they are all but mathematically eliminated from the Sun Belt title race at 1-3. According to reports, the team is not giving up on the season and for the time being, the youth movement has been put on hold.

If you buy into Troy still having some fight, you are getting a discount at -8 against North Texas. The Trojans were -12 against MTSU earlier in the year and -8.5 at North Texas last year. North Texas meanwhile enters off a bye Read more

College Football Gambling News: Virginia Tech readies for Georgia Tech

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Virginia Tech -1 at Georgia Tech O/U 48.5

Some great notes on Virginia Tech's game plan for Thursday's showdown at Georgia Tech. The Hokies have made some personnel changes on defense and had a bye week to prepare for the different looks the Yellow Jackets will use. Head coach Frank Beamer noted that holding onto the football and cashing in at a high rate are critical.

“The defense is always known, but we’re always doubted as an offense,” Thomas said. “Yeah, I think it’s about that time that we go out there and show what we’re capable of. In the previous games we’ve shown we’re capable of putting up a lot of points, Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Northwestern knew what Nebraska's offense was running

11.09.2011     08:53 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Desperate for some sort of defensive turnaround, Northwestern was able to pick up on some of Nebraska's offensive signals and used it to its advantage in last week's 28-25 upset in Lincoln. The Wildcats weren't necessarily cheating, they simply picked things out from watching film on the Cornhuskers.

"I kind of caught on that every time we would look over (at Northwestern's defense), they were looking at me for the play or at the sidelines for the play," Martinez said at Nebraska's Monday press conference. "So during the game we kind of mixed up each signal."

"There were some things that we saw from our film study of them that (Martinez) gave away that we thought we could take advantage of," Fitzgerald said. "When they were confirmed I think we took advantage of some of those things."

Handicapper Fairway Jay cashes 20* College Football Game of the Year

11.08.2011     02:13 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We cashed our 20* College Football Game of the Year Saturday in dominating fashion as Virginia (-2.5) ran and rolled over Maryland 31-13. The Terps were held scoreless in the second half, and regular Fairway Followers that read my rushing guidelines in college football know that teams that outrush their opponent by at least a 2-to-1 margin have now covered the pointspread at a 75% clip this season. Virginia dominated at the point of attack, rolling up 527 yards offense at 6.5 yards per play. Running back Perry Jones took the opening play from scrimmage and ran 47 yards for a touchdown to lead the rout as the Cavaliers outrushed the Terrapins 220-84. Maryland’s problems at the point of attack played out perfectly, and we noted additional situations and stats that pointed to a Virginia victory.

Below was my game analysis provided to clients that cashed with our 20* College Football Game of the Year winner. Thanks for the support and we look forward to more winning action in the closing months of the football season with plenty of top play Big Drive’s finding the Fairway and Green.

Below is a conference-by-conference list of teams who are close to gaining bowl eligibility. I’ve included a pair of categories: 1) Teams that can get in with a win this week or 2) Desperate teams that need to win two of their final three games to qualify (marked with an asterisk). The team attempting to qualify has their current record in parenthesis next to their name and has their opponent this week with location and point spread. Their remaining games are in italics.

NCAAF Betting: Oklahoma State won't change offense despite weak Tech run defense

11.08.2011     10:46 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oklahoma State -17 at Texas Tech O/U 78.5

Despite Texas Tech’s struggles against the run the past two weeks (368 yards vs. Iowa State, 439 yards vs. Texas) don’t expect Oklahoma State to change its offensive game plan by going run first. Offensive coordinator Todd Monken, perhaps playing a little coy, said Texas Tech will be a challenge because what they see in practice is what they’ll see on Saturday. The Cowboys throw the ball nearly 60% of the time though when they do go to the ground, they’ve had above average results (169.8 ypg, 5.3 ypc).

"They've played two power-running football teams (the past two weeks), and there's no denying that presented some problems for them defensively," Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Todd Monken said Monday. "Unfortunately, we're not Read more
