College Football Gambling: Texas' Strong says it'll take time to build a contender

04.22.2014     12:35 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Before you plunk down $100 to win $6,000 (available at 5Dimes) on Texas to win the 2015 BCS National Championship, you may want to read first-year head coach Charlie Strong's take on his team's chances. Success? Probably. Title game berth? Umm, no.

"We have everything available, and I don't know why we can't be successful," Strong told fans in Fort Worth during the first stop on his bus tour, according to the Austin American-Statesman. "There's no reason for us not to be. Now, I can't tell you how soon it's going to be. Don't hold me to that. Don't say, 'Ooh, coach said next year we'll be in the national ...' We will not be in the national championship game."

McQueary at center of questionable ending in 1995 blowout win

03.06.2014     07:36 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Well researched and entertaining article by Betting Talk's David Purdum on former Penn State quarterback/assistant coach Mike McQueary. It was recently revealed by ESPN the Magazine that during McQueary's playing days he was a bit of a sports bettor. Purdum calls into question the ending of PSU's 59-34 blowout win over Rutgers back in 1995.

Facing 2nd-and-7 at the Rutgers’ 42-yard line, most observers—including the TV announcers—were expecting McQueary to call a time-killing run up the middle. Instead, McQueary faked a handoff, dropped back and threw a deep pass to receiver Chris Campbell for a touchdown that put the Nittany Lions ahead by 25.

Former Penn State quarterback like to bet, wasn't very good at it

03.04.2014     12:40 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Most of you know former Penn State assistant Mike McQueary as a key witness to that you-know-what ordeal. But did you also know McQueary liked to gamble? Like a lot, and did so while he was playing quarterback for the Nittany Lions.

According to several of his classmates and teammates, McQueary developed a compulsive gambling habit at Penn State. He bet and lost thousands of dollars on poker and sports wagering, mostly on pro football, though he also bet, several of his former teammates say, on Nittany Lions games. One former teammate specifically recalls that Big Red bet and lost on his own team in a November 1996 game against Michigan State at Beaver Stadium. With McQueary serving as a backup on the sideline, favorite PSU won on a late field goal 32-29 but didn't cover the eight-point spread.

As his losses mounted, McQueary owed thousands of dollars to a bookie, a debt that was eventually erased by his father, several people say. A college friend recalls urging McQueary to slow down. "It got pretty bad," the friend says, "and

College Football Betting News: NCAA rule change could have massive impact on game

02.13.2014     08:36 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Not content to leave well enough alone, the NCAA is proposing a rule – supposedly with players’ safety in mind – that college football defenses will have 10 seconds to sub after each snap. Pretty much every up-tempo coach in the country is pissed, including Arizona's Rich Rodriguez, Ole Miss' Hugh Freeze, and Baylor's Art Briles.

South Point's College Football Bowl Contest came down to BCS Championship

01.10.2014     07:32 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

According to The Vegas Parlay, no one managed to go 16-for-16 in South Point's College Football Handicapping Contest. Picking games straight up, two contestants were 13-for-15 heading into the BCS Championship – one had Florida State and one had Auburn. The end result was a nice $50K payday.

Bettor didn't hedge on Auburn to win BCS Championship ticket

01.07.2014     07:25 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The dude who bet $100 on Auburn to win the BCS Championship at 500-1 odds reportedly didn't hedge his bet and instead let it ride. According to Pinnacle's in-game odds, at its peak, Auburn was -7.5 (or roughly -325). Following the Tigers' go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter, they were priced at -200.

"I regret nothing," Skiba said after the game. "At the end if the day, I was playing with house money for the last two months. This was not supposed to happen in so many ways. It's the whole experience and the story. That's what I will remember.

"It was a bit of a life-changing experience just from the exposure standpoint and tonight it definitely peaked."

BCS Championship Betting Recap: Florida State wins but Auburn gets the cash

01.07.2014     07:16 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Submitted by Stat Intelligence

Great game! You probably watched. No need to rehash the play-by-play. Let’s see what the numbers say about the evening…

Florida State 34, Auburn (+11) 31

Florida State: 385 yards, 5.8 per-play, 1 turnovers, 17% third downs

Auburn : 462 yards, 5.8 per-play, 1 turnovers, 56% third downs

Other Numbers

Florida State: 148 rush, 20-35-0-237 passing, 17 drive points, 24 stat score, 20 sloppiness

Auburn: 232 rush, 14-27-1-230 passing, 17 drive points, 31 stat score, 18 sloppiness

Auburn got the best of it when it was offense vs. defense, which was a big surprise. In fact, they scored exactly what they were supposed to based on stat score (2 times rushing, plus passing, times 0.67, divided by 15). Florida State’s kickoff return TD saved the day for the Seminoles. Throw that in, and stat score becomes a 31-all tie in a game that ended 34-31.

On Sunday Tampa Bay authorizes took down a local bookmaking operation involving former Florida and NFL wide receiver Reche Caldwell. In the raid, the cops confiscated cash, handguns, and drugs. Not the first Gator to run into trouble with gambling. Anyone remember Teddy Dupay?

College Football Betting: Florida State steamed up to -10.5 for tonight's BCS Championship

Auburn vs. Florida State -10.5 O/U 68

You knew that the pointspread on tonight's BCS National Championship was going to move at some point with most sportsbooks sitting in that “dead number” range of 8/8.5 since early December. Over the course of the last 24 hours, Florida State appears to be the more attractive of the two sides according to the betting markets. The Seminoles have climbed to as high as -10.5 while the total has clicked up to 68 after an opener of 65. Yet despite the line move, Bookmaker is reporting that 65.5% of bets have been place on Auburn.

Floyd Mayweather has been busy this bowl season

01.03.2014     12:58 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It's been over three months since we last heard from our favorite sports bettor, Floyd Mayweather. Floyd has apparently been crushing bowl games with a moneyline win (+225) on Michigan State in its Rose Bowl win over Stanford and a somewhat random second half play (-4 adjusted) on Oklahoma in its Sugar Bowl upset of Alabama.
