College Football Betting: Adjustments have Syracuse's defense on the upswing

10.24.2012     12:20 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Syracuse at South Florida -2.5 O/U 52

A few adjustments along the defensive line have resulted in significantly better numbers for the Syracuse Orange.

“Coach Daoust did a great job of working with Coach Shafer and getting us in position and lined up so we wouldn’t have to play that many double-teams and combo blocks,” senior defensive tackle Deon Goggins said. “We had to make it hard on them (opposing offensive lines) and not let them make it harder on us.”

The results have been dramatic. The Orange (3-4, 2-1 Big East) defense allowed 176.25 rushing yards per game during the 1-3 stretch prior to the bye week. It has allowed 105 rushing yards total in its 2-1 run since, an average of only 35 yards per game.

College Football Betting Preview: UCLA Bruins at Arizona State Sun Devils

CRIS Current: Arizona State -6.5 O/U 57.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Arizona State -3

College football has certainly changed over the last decade with the popularity of spread and pass-happy offenses. But one thing that remains constant is that teams who are sound in the running game tend to be much stronger bets than teams who don't. When I handicap the college football card this time of year, one of the things I'm looking for are underdogs with better ypc and ypca allowed numbers than the favorite. It doesn't happen often because that type of discrepancy is usually accounted for in the betting markets.

In the case of UCLA-Arizona State, our ACCU-Stats show that the Bruins are over a yard per carry better than the Sun Devils. Considering both teams have nearly identical Read more

College Football Gambling Update: Bettors continue to pound Texas A&M Aggies

10.24.2012     08:13 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Texas A&M -15 at Auburn O/U 52.5

Texas A&M continues to get bet like the outcome of Saturday's game at Auburn has already been determined. We mentioned yesterday that the Aggies opened -9 and were quickly bet up to -14. Yesterday, all of the -14's got taken out with A&M is now as high as -15.5. For the season, betting the opening number (in this case, Texas A&M -9) on games that moved three points or more is a very positive profile (48-28, 63% ATS). Betting the closing line of those games (trying to chase steam) is not nearly as profitable (38-35-3, 52% ATS).

As for the matchup, Auburn defensive coordinator has concerns about Texas A&M's up-tempo offense. The Tigers haven't fared well in games against fast-paced squads (1-2 SU, 0-3 ATS vs. Clemson, UL-Monroe and Ole Miss).

"I think the biggest concern is tempo," VanGorder said after Read more

College Football Gambling: Penn State has been a great first quarter bet

10.24.2012     07:35 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Ohio State at Penn State pk O/U 50.5

Good article on Penn State's fast starts. The Nittany Lions have outscored their opponents 66-0 in the first quarter thanks in part to their up-tempo offense. On the flip side, Ohio State has been very sluggish out of the gates. Last week the Buckeyes trailed Purdue 13-7 and also fell behind to Nebraska (14-7) and UAB (6-0) before rallying back. OSU has been outscored 56-51 in the first quarter. Perhaps a trend to consider if you play at a sportsbook that offers first quarter lines.

“We’re just getting more and more comfortable with it each week. I couldn’t even tell you the amount of plays we have in there,” McGloin said. “Everybody knows the plays, everybody knows the formations and that’s just what we do throughout the week. It’s not just Read more

College Football Betting: Stanford looks to back-up QB for offensive spark

10.24.2012     07:19 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Washington State at Stanford -24.5 O/U 51

With quarterback Josh Nunes' continued struggles, Stanford has found ways to get back-up Kevin Hogan on the field. Hogan's skill set is more suited for the spread-option. He threw a touchdown in last week's win over California and may see more time this weekend with the Cardinal a sizable favorite over Washington State.

"It's kind of like having, excuse me for saying it, but like a Tim Tebow on our team," fullback Ryan Hewitt said. "He relishes the role. He likes it."

"This is not a wildcat. This is not a running back that's just a running back. He's an athletic guy that can pass," Shaw said. "Those are things that we can take advantage of as an offense."

College Football Handicapping: BYU's offensive line in shambles

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
BYU at Georgia Tech -2.5 O/U 50.5

Major offensive line concerns for BYU heading into Saturday's matchup at Georgia Tech.

"It's absolutely huge," quarterback Riley Nelson said of losing Hansen. "A senior, a leader and the center, someone who has basically started every game he's played here. So it's humongous, but we're going to do our best to try to fill it."

"This year's been crazy. We have guys who have legitimate injuries — some season-ending, some career-ending," said senior right tackle Braden Brown. "Every year we battle bumps and bruises, but it's unfortunate to lose guys that way. We've got to find five guys that are capable of Read more

College Football ATS Trends: South Florida 4-13 ATS vs. Big East under Holtz

10.23.2012     11:51 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Syracuse at South Florida -3 O/U 52.5

Skip Holtz may have been pointspread gold during his time at East Carolina but he certainly didn't bring that magic with him to Tampa. In three years under Holtz' watch, South Florida is 4-13 SU/ATS vs. the Big East. Dating back to the 2010 season, the Bulls have exactly ONE conference win in their last 13 tries. In Week 3, South Florida was a 7.5-point home favorite over Rutgers. A month later, they are laying three at home against Syracuse (opened -6).
