College Football Handicapping: Louisiana Tech reloads along offensive line

08.15.2013     07:24 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Tough situation for Louisiana Tech as first-year head coach Skip Holtz inherits only seven returning starters. One unit in particular that could have issues is the offensive line. Tech attempted over 500 passes last season but behind a very experienced o-line allowed only 10 sacks. This year’s group has only 15 career starts under its belt and will be working with a new quarterback and obviously a new system.

“We’re running a little bit different scheme, but we’re running the same type of stuff,” Shepperd said. “It’s with a little twist ... and I definitely think it could be good for us.

“It’s been a grind, but we’re still staying focused and keeping positive attitudes,” Banks said. “The competition has been pretty good, and we look at it like we’re pushing ourselves to become better athletes.”

College Football Gambling: Pitt names Savage starting quarterback

08.15.2013     07:14 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Pittsburgh Panthers second-year head coach Paul Chryst announced that Tom Savage will be the team's Week 1 starter vs. Florida State. Savage replaced Tino Sunseri who when not taking sacks was fairly effective (21 TDs, 3 INTs). Savage started as a true frosh for Rutgers back in 2009 but then struggled with injuries, transferred to Arizona but sat out, and now finds himself as the starter despite not having played in a game since November of 2010.

Also today we’ve told the players that Tom [Savage] is going to be our starting quarterback. We like what he has done to this point. It’s a reflection of where Tom is at. We still think that Chad [Voytik] has made really good progress, but we feel really good and confident with Tom.”

College Football Gambling: BYU down to three returning defensive starters

08.13.2013     11:15 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
BYU posted some strong defensive numbers (14.0 ppg allowed) in 2012 but lost seven starters from that unit including first round pick Ezekiel Ansah. The Cougars were obviously slated to return four starters but that number is down to three after starting defensive back Jordan Johnson tore his ACL Monday.

NCAA Football Gambling Update: Kentucky attempts to go up-tempo with suspect o-line

08.13.2013     07:45 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

We talked earlier this summer about Kentucky's move to a more up-tempo offense under first-year offensive coordinator Neal Brown. It's unlikely to be a smooth transition in part because the Wildcats look thin along the offensive line. UK ranks 106th nationally in terms of o-line returning starts (39). According to one article, Kentucky still doesn't know who will start at center.

"We do try and alleviate some pressure off the quarterbacks with the center," says offensive coordinator Brown. "As far as cadence, as far as calling protections. Those type of things."

"Just getting depth with the O-Line is a big deal right now," says Stoops. "We need to get more bodies and more guys ready. We're working hard in moving some guys around and getting them some experience. "

College Football Betting Notes: Trench play a key for Rutgers-Fresno State matchup

08.13.2013     07:33 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Rutgers at Fresno State -10

An in-game matchup to consider for Week 1’s Rutgers-Fresno State game. FSU's offensive line reportedly struggled during a recent scrimmage allowing 15 tackles for loss and seven sacks (some of which by the second and third string). Last season the Bulldogs allowed 29 sacks though attempted over 500 passes. They went the entire regular season without allowing more than three sacks in a game before surrendering seven against SMU in the Hawaii Bowl.

"Do we need to move a tackle in to guard? What do we need to do to get our best five out there?" DeRuyter said. "We're going to get together, look at this tape really hard and make some tough decisions about who are those guys."

College Football Handicapping: Wisconsin switches to 3-4 defense

08.13.2013     06:02 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Under first-year defensive coordinator Dave Aranda (Utah State), the Wisconsin Badgers will switch from a 4-3 defense to a 3-4 this season.

"There are only a handful of teams in the NCAA that run a 3-4, so it will be hard for teams to imitate us in scout team. Offensive lines aren't really accustomed to blocking 3-4s, so I think that will be nice for us."

"We're so much more attack oriented," added DL Ethan Hemer. "We attack and come off the ball and we make offenses dictate to what we do instead of dictating to what offenses do."

College Football Gambling Update: Virginia names Watford starting QB

08.12.2013     02:15 PM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

More news out of Virginia camp. Head coach Mike London announced sophomore quarterback David Watford will be the Cavs' Week 1 starter vs. BYU (-3.5). Watford saw action as a true frosh (246 yards, 3 TDs, 4 INTs) but redshirted last season.

College Football Betting: Illinois' defense not the same without DC Koenning

08.12.2013     12:36 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Illinois' defense is hoping for better results in the second year under defensive coordinator Tim Banks. As mentioned in this article, when Tim Beckman took over, he decided not to keep defensive coordinator Vic Koenning. The transition from Koenning to Banks wasn't a smooth one as the Illini went from allowing 286.2 ypg (2nd Big Ten) to 387.6 ypg (10th Big Ten) last season.

“We just couldn’t put the pieces together,” he said. “Transition is hard. I had a special relationship with him and change is really difficult. But you just have to buy into a new system, which we’ve done.

“Improvement is expected in the second year.”
