College Football Betting: Former Florida State OC takes same position at Miami

08.05.2013     10:59 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article on Miami Hurricanes first-year offensive coordinator James Coley. Coley, who is noted for being an excellent recruiter, held the same position at Florida State but head coach Jimbo Fisher called the plays.

“It wasn’t frustrating,” Coley said of his FSU career. “I knew when I took that job the head coach was the play-caller. I have a great relationship with Jimbo. Calling the plays is his passion.”

“We’ll be multiple: spread, fullback, one or two tight ends, four receivers. … And tempo meaning we’re in a no-huddle mode and can go as fast as we want or as slow as we need.”

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Here are the details on William Hill's football contests for this season. You can sign up at any WH location.

The Pro Pick ‘em Contest costs $25, and players can enter 25 times. Entrants pick the winners each week of Sunday and Monday NFL games. The weekly top prize is $10,000, and the overall season top prize is $25,000. The contest runs from Sept. 8 to Dec. 29.

The College Pick ‘em Contest costs $100, and players can enter 10 times. Entrants pick seven games against the point spread from a designated list. The top weekly prize is $5,000, and the top overall prize is $10,000. The contest runs from Sept. 7 to Nov. 9.

The Three ‘n Out Pro Football Contest costs $25, and players can enter five times. Each week, entrants pick a winning team or total from any Thursday, Sunday or Monday game. If the pick is correct, the player moves to the next week. After three losing picks, the player is eliminated. A player with five entries has 15 lifelines to use over the 17-week season.

College Football Betting Alert: Hawaii fires offensive coordinator

Well this isn't good. Hawaii head coach Norm Chow just fired offensive coordinator Aaron Price. Price was hired back in February. Chow said "some issues have arisen" and the team was moving forward. Hawaii opens the season as a 22.5-point underdog vs. USC.

College Football Betting: Indiana sees up-tempo as key vs. Big Ten

08.02.2013     01:15 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Not every team in the Big Ten likes to play at a pedestrian pace and grind out games. Indiana and Penn State ranked in the top 25 nationally in terms of plays per game last season. In Kevin Wilson's second season, the Hoosiers ranked second in the Big Ten in yards per game (442.0). According to Wilson, playing up-tempo is the best way to level the playing field against the rest of the conference.

"We understand that when we substitute, the referee gives the other team a chance to match that substitution," he said. "We also understand that when we don't substitute, we can go fast. I believe in playing fast. I believe in different tempos."

"Fans want to see points," Wilson said. "With HD TV, every league and the professionals, everyone’s worried about fan experience. Great defense, you want it, I don’t think every game’s gotta be a 42-40 shootout, but I don't think anybody wants a 1-0 shutout. I don’t think we're playing 7-3 football."

College Football Betting: Cal's Dykes walking into a tough situation

08.02.2013     07:47 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Good article on Cal first-year head coach Sonny Dykes and the current state of the program. He's got some work to do with only 11 returning starters, no experience at the quarterback position, and a brutal schedule. According to 5Dimes, Cal is lined at 4un-145 regular season wins. The Golden Bears are also an 8.5-point home favorite to Northwestern for Week 1.

“Our whole emphasis is always on speed. We want to do everything fast. We want our players to think fast, react fast and play fast. We want to recruit fast kids. We want to transition fast. When guys are thinking and unsure, that results in them being a step slow. By design everything's pretty simple.”

On offensive coordinator Tony Franklin: “He'll call the plays. I'll do a lot of the situational stuff — 'We've got the ball at midfield. It's third and 7.' I'm going to tell him, 'Hey you've got two downs,' that type of stuff. There are times I'll say, 'Let's run the ball here. Take a shot here.' It's more game management than specific plays. We've been around each other 16 Read more

College Football Handicapping: 2012 Matchups vs. 2013 Week 1 Lines

08.02.2013     07:20 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Below is a list of Week 1 college football games that feature rematches of contests played last year. This is a good tool for seeing how much has changed in the betting markets over the last calendar year. For example, on a neutral site Colorado State was +6 vs. Colorado and won outright 22-17. This year, at the same venue, the Rams are -1. Needless to say, not many folks are bullish about the Buffaloes in 2013. While Hawaii is expected to improve, oddsmakers and bettors aren't nearly as giddy with USC as they were heading into last season. The Trojans were preseason No. 1 and opened as 37-point home favorites over the Warriors before closing as high as -44 at some shops. They won the game by 39, but finished a dismal 7-6, and lost quarterback Matt Barkley to the NFL. Now, no one is talking about the Men of Troy as they enter the season ranked 24th and are 22.5-point road favorites in Honolulu.

College Football Handicapping: American Athletic Conference Stat Day

08.01.2013     08:09 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Submitted by Stat Intelligence

Our final look at a mid-major conference features the new American Athletic Conference. It’s a 10-team league that currently features six teams from last year’s Big East, and four teams from last year’s Conference USA. You can see an emphasis on markets in the CUSA invitees. SMU and Houston bring Dallas and Houston into the fold. Central Florida is based in Orlando...in the heart of a sports-loving state and near the massive amusement park complex run by the company that owns ESPN. Memphis isn’t a megaplex, but it’s in a great football state while also being in an NBA city. The conference is hoping to grow into a big deal given that strategy.

It’s not really a big deal yet. Though, Louisville sure did the conference proud last year in the Sugar Bowl when they stunned Florida. The most surprising thing to me about the numbers you’ll be reading today is that Louisville didn’t look all that dominant by Big East standards. They played a lot of close games in a mediocre (or worse) conference before catching arrogant Florida napping and Read more

Reno sportsbook shades line for local team

08.01.2013     07:46 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Reno's Peppermill Sportsbook opened Nevada's regular season over/under wins at 4.5 – a very opinionated numbered compared to other books. Due to the influx of over money, they've since moved their number to 5.5. According to Peppermill's sportsbook director, the low opener was by design so that local fans could bet their team over. 5Dimes has the Wolf Pack lined at 6.5un-185 or 5.5ov-165.
