Teddy Covers gives us the scoop on the 'official' College Football Week 1 opening numbers

08.07.2013     01:37 PM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Yesterday was the first meeting of the season for the legendary 'Tuesday Group' of professional bettors here in Las Vegas. We had a very spirited debate about what the 'official' college football Week 1 opening numbers actually are/were.

With different books posting very different numbers at different times, we decided a 'consensus' opening line was a better choice than using any one book. The initial variance is gone, and the spreads as of RIGHT NOW on 8/7 should be considered the 'market openers'. Track moves from today, not before!

Thursday, 8/29:

SOUTH CAROLINA -10.5 North Carolina
MINNESOTA -14 Unlv
BOWLING GREEN -4 Tulsa
UCF -21.5 Akron
UTAH -3 Utah St
Ole Miss -3 VANDERBILT
Fresno -10 Rutgers
Usc -21.5 HAWAII

Friday, 8/30:

MICHIGAN ST -26.5 Western Michigan
MIAMI-FL -32.5 Florida Atlantic
Texas Tech -6 SMU

Saturday, 8/31:

WISCONSIN -45 Umass
MICHIGAN -31.5 Central Michigan
OHIO ST -36 Buffalo

College Football Handicapping: Illinois hopes new OC can spark offensive turnaround

08.07.2013     07:13 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A common theme here in the blog this summer has been college football teams with crappy offenses that bring in new offensive coordinators. In the case of Illinois, calling last year's offense "crappy" is generous. We're talking about a team that averaged 11.8 ppg in conference play. When something like that occurs the next logical move is to bring in an up-and-coming OC who can quickly turn things around. But the Illini went a different route and hired former Western Michigan head coach Bill Cubit who this fall will turn 60 years old. Cubit's WMU teams were typically slightly above average by MAC standards but never prolific when it came to putting points on the board. According to Cubit, the main goal this season is to play faster (Illinois ranked 87th in plays per game last year, Western Michigan ranked 34th). Dating back to the Ron Zook era, U of I’s problem has not been talent but rather developing it. Nowhere is that more apparent than quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase who saw his QB ratings drop from 133.38 to Read more

College Football Handicapping: Early line moves common throughout summer

08.06.2013     07:55 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A lot of differing opinions on Florida State's Week 1 contest at Pittsburgh. Going back to early June, we saw the Golden Nugget open with the Seminoles a 13-point road favorite. In early July BetOnline opened FSU -10.5. Late that month, 5Dimes opened FSU -12.5. Last weekend, CRIS posted its openers and decided to hang a -7.5 which was hit immediately and bet up to its current number of -10. These types of "opinions" are common but over the last two months we've seen three different waves of numbers (Golden Nugget GOYs, small sportsbooks, and CRIS) which provides bettors with a good gauge of what oddsmakers and the markets are thinking.

College Football Betting: Tenuta takes over as Virginia's defensive coordinator

08.06.2013     07:42 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Virginia has never had much of an offense. Since 2006, the Cavaliers have averaged over 25 ppg and 400 ypg just once. During the offseason head coach Mike London brought in Steve Fairchild to serve as offensive coordinator but there aren't many projections that indicate UVA's offense will thrive. What Virginia needs to succeed (and cover pointspreads) is an above average defense. They're hoping to get there with first-year defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta who spent time at NC State, Georgia Tech, Ohio State, and Notre Dame. The theme this preseason under Tenuta has been aggression. UVA ranked 86th in tackles for loss (65) and 103rd in sacks (17) last season.

“Part of what Jon does is dictating to an offense about what we’re going to do and how we’re going to do it,” London said Friday. “It lends to creating aggressiveness. And it lends to creating turnovers. And that’s what we’re looking for as well.”

“We’re going to Read more

College Football Gambling: Nowhere to go but up for West Virginia's defense

08.06.2013     07:27 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Every bettor on the planet knows that West Virginia's defense was awful last season. And with only three returning starters on offense, the stop unit is going to need to improve if the Mountaineers plan on being competitive in the Big XII (lined at 6un-109 wins at Pinnacle). Keith Patterson will serve as the lone defensive coordinator after sharing duties last season. The stop unit returns seven starters but as Patterson noted, "having a lot of people back is not necessarily a good thing." The good news for WVU is that four of their first five conference foes will be breaking in a new quarterback (Oklahoma, Baylor, Kansas State, and Texas Tech). Those four teams combined for 1,676 passing yards and 54.3 ppg vs. WVU in 2012.

“(Defensive lineman Shaq) Rowell said he looks at the stats to remind him. He says it motivates him,” said returning cornerback Broderick Jenkins. “If it doesn’t motivate you, I don’t think you are in the right mode of thinking. If Read more

College Football Handicapping: Preseason Power Ratings

08.06.2013     06:42 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Submitted by Stat Intelligence

As most of you in the markets know, CRIS posted Week One lines for college football this past weekend. Those lines have had time to move…as sharp action has hit the offshore board. That’s helped solidify how “the market” sees the 2013 college football season in the days leading up to everyone’s openers.

I’ve used those “improved” lines (oddsmakers openers plus sharp influence) to update our first crack at estimated Power Ratings. First, I’ll run through the top 10 or so, which will give you a chance to compare them to preseason polls. Then, I’ll go through each board conference. Again, these aren’t how I would personally rate the teams. This is my guess at how “the market” as a composite has the teams rated on a standard Power Ratings scale. You regulars know that I typically stick “championship caliber” at 85 and work down from that. This year’s Alabama squad is seen as a bit better than Read more

The sports betting world reacts to potential suspension for Manziel

08.05.2013     12:50 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Egads! Johnny Football suspended? You know what that means – hours of discussion about how much he's worth to the pointspread. The general consensus among a few Las Vegas oddsmakers is a full touchdown. A lot of sportsbooks aren't taking any chances as Texas A&M's Week 1 game against Rice has been taken off the board.
