College Football Handicapping: Duke embraces underdog role vs. Cincinnati

Duke vs. Cincinnati -7 O/U 59.5

Appearing in the postseason for the first time since 1961, Duke welcomes the underdog role for its Belk Bowl matchup against Cincinnati.

“Doesn’t that just fuel anybody?” coach David Cutcliffe said. “That’s kind of life. You love people telling you you can’t. And when somebody tells you you’re the underdog, they’re telling you you can’t win. I’ve always liked that role.”

“We won’t get rusty with the practices we’ve had,” wide receiver Jamison Crowder said. “We’re going hard and in full pads.”

New Orleans Bowl

East Carolina vs. Louisiana-Lafayette
CRIS Opener:
UL-Lafayette -4.5 O/U 63
CRIS Current: UL-Lafayette -5 O/U 65.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: UL-Lafayette -4.5

UL-Lafayette makes its second straight trip to the New Orleans bowl after defeating San Diego State 32-30 as 6-point underdogs last season. It was a pro Ragin' Cajuns crowd but the Superdome was only about half full and East Carolina should travel much better than the Aztecs. ECU returns to the postseason after finishing 5-7 last year. They were blown out by Maryland, 51-20, in the 2010 Military Bowl.

The turning point for UL-Lafayette was its road win over UL-Monroe. They benefited from the Warhawks losing quarterback Kolton Browning to injury late in the first half, but it was still a significant victory. The following week they nearly Read more

CRIS Current: Fresno State -12.5 O/U 59.5
Rob Veno’s Power Rating: Fresno State -11

It was another up and down season for head coach June Jones the SMU Mustangs. They were the perfect definition of mediocre at 6-6 overall and 5-3 in C-USA play. They won back-to-back games only once but by all reports are motivated and excited to be traveling to the island for the Hawaii Bowl to take on the Fresno State. Jones on his team’s postseason berth: "Having been affiliated with this bowl since its inception, I know that it is one of the best bowl experiences in college football. I'm very excited for our players, staff and fans. This is a special experience." SMU has been to three previous bowl games under Jones going 2-1 SU Read more

College Football Handicapping: West Virginia wants revenge vs. Syracuse

West Virginia -4 vs. Syracuse O/U 74

Trying to draw inspiration from somewhere, West Virginia is using last year's 49-23 loss at Syracuse (as 14-point favorites) as means of motivation.

"I think we're going to be motivated to play based on what happened there last year," Holgorsen said. "Went up to Syracuse, and they outcoached us and outplayed us. There's going to be a lot of familiarity. ... [That] was not very pleasant for West Virginia when Syracuse got the best of us. Our kids will be fired up about playing."

And if you are wondering what the Pinstripe Bowl's executive director is betting, here's your answer.

"We have one of the best bowl matchups in the country. Our game will be as exciting as any game you want to see," Read more

College Football Gambling: Texas names Ash starting QB vs. Oregon State

Oregon State -2 vs. Texas O/U 57

Texas has named quarterback David Ash the starter for its Alamo Bowl matchup against Oregon State. Ash did not play in the season finale against Kansas State. During the regular season he completed 67.7% of his passes for 2,458 yards, 17 TDs and 7 INTs.

"The offensive staff talked about it and David did a really good job until he got hurt, so I think that is where we are headed," said Texas coach Mack Brown.

Beef O'Brady's Bowl - St. Petersburg, Fla.

Ball State vs. Central Florida
CRIS Opener:
Central Florida -7.5 O/U 63
CRIS Current: Central Florida -7 (-115) O/U 62
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Central Florida -8

There’s an interesting but not uncommon dilemma for Ball State heading into this contest. Some players have openly addressed the very disjointed schedule they’ve been on since their regular season finale against Miami (OH). Final exams, the long layoff between games, sporadic practices, coaches intermittent appearances on campus due to recruiting trips, and talk of hitting the beach are all distractions from Ball State’s normal in-season routine. However, when you get down to the root of the team mindsets for this game it seems pretty clear. This invite is a great post season prize for Ball State and a Read more

College Football Gambling: Ball State tries to overcome tricky bowl prep schedule

Ball State vs. Central Florida -7 O/U 61.5

Ball State's preparation for the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl has been a bit discombobulated. There were finals, a limited amount of practices, and what will end up being nearly a full month in between games. There is also little to no bowl experience with the players and staff. Central Florida meanwhile played in the C-USA Championship on December 1 and is less than two hours from St. Petersburg.

“It’s tough because now you really have to grind for your finals and practices are on days you have class, so it’s like hard,” cornerback Eric Patterson said a week ago. “You know you could study after practice so that’s the big thing.”

“It’s different,” tight end Dylan Curry said. “I’ve never Read more

College Football Betting Update: BYU's Lark likely to start Poinsettia Bowl

UPDATE

BYU -3 vs. San Diego State O/U 48

The latest reports from BYU hint that quarterback Riley Nelson is still not fully healed and James Lark will start Thursday's Poinsettia Bowl. The team however did not rule out Nelson seeing the field at some point.

"In my opinion, Riley's still not at 100 percent," Mendenhall said. "The good news is, we still have three more days. But they're both getting work. There's a good chance that you could see both (quarterbacks). I'm not sure how it's going to play out nor can I predict the next three days."

Poinsettia Bowl - San Diego, Calif.
Thursday, December 20, 5 pm PT - ESPN
BYU vs. San Diego State
CRIS Opener:
BYU -3 O/U 50
CRIS Current: BYU -3 O/U 48
Rob Veno's Power Rating: BYU -3

This was somewhat of a down year for BYU off last year's 10-3 season as Bronco Mendenhall's squad found more ways to lose tight games than to win them. Four of their five losses came by six points or less, and the lone blowout defeat (at the hands of Oregon State) was a tight game into the fourth quarter before things got ugly. Much of their mediocrity can be blamed on quarterback injuries and ineffectiveness.

Mendenhall has not yet named a starter for the bowl game, and he's not expected to choose between multi-year starter Riley Nelson and late season sensation James Lark until game day. Lark, a senior, was buried on the QB depth chart for most of his career, but he started the Read more
