Politicians of Missouri and Wisconsin get to drink crappy beer if their team wins

10.12.2011     02:43 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
They say if you’re not betting money they you really aren't betting. But what about when the outcome of a wager is decided by beer? Maintaining the recent trend of state politicians betting against one another on sporting events, the Cardinals-Brewers series just got serious with a case of Bud Light and Miller High Life riding on the outcome.

"There is no doubt that the Brewers will win the next three games, but I need to call Brewers Manager Ron Roenicke right away and tell him just how dire this situation is," Rep. Moore said. "I am loathe to purchase Budweiser. The only beer I ever buy or drink is High Life."

"The Cardinals are on a roll; Albert is awesome; Chris Carpenter is warming up; and the Rally Squirrel is ready, said Congressman Clay. And I am surprised to learn that they actually brew beer in Milwaukee!"

MLB Handicapping: Playoff races come down to the final day

09.28.2011     06:24 AM     Printer Friendly
Usually the final day of the regular season is an afterthought but this year bettors are treated to multiple games involving postseason implications. Here is a link explaining all of today's situations.

The AL Wild Card remains a deadlock between the Red Sox and the Rays for a second day, with the AL East foes holding identical 90-71 records after Boston won at Baltimore and Tampa Bay beat New York on Tuesday. Tampa Bay earned home field for the potential Thursday tiebreaker by winning the season series between the two clubs, 12-6. The Yankees can't play either one of their division foes in the Division Series, so that means the No. 2 seed will draw the Wild Card -- but we still don't know the No. 2 seed in the AL.

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Baltimore Orioles at Detroit Tigers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Baltimore (Britton) +130 at Detroit (Turner) O/U 9
Recommendation: Baltimore

The betting markets are simply too hot on the Tigers these days.  Detroit has won 15 of their last 18 overall and 25 of their last 32, including last night’s come-from behind win at Kansas City.  But don’t expect maximum intensity from the Tigers on their final homestand of the season following their latest successful road trip.  Manager Jim Leyland brought Doug Fister in for a relief role last night, looking to set up his rotation for the playoffs already. “We have to get everything lined up for the playoffs.”  Slugger Miguel Cabrera echoed that sentiment: “It’s going to be nice going home and getting ready for the playoffs.”  This team is, quite simply, not fully focused on tonight’s affair.

Meanwhile, the Orioles are playing inspired baseball down the stretch.  In the last two weeks, they’ve beaten the Yankees twice, the Rays twice, the Angels twice and the Red Sox three times.  Baltimore has a 7-2 mark in its last nine games, cashing as a big underdog in Read more

Taking a break from the football for a minute, we feel required to mention the current meltdown taking place with the Boston Red Sox (87-65) who are on a 4-13 run and seen their wild card lead over Tampa Bay (85-67) dwindle to just two games. Both teams have 10 games remaining.

Third straight winning week for the Sportsmemo Crew with a solid 3-2 effort today. That ups this year's record to 13-6, 68% and our two-year mark to 56-35, 62%. Thanks again for following.

Boston (Miller) at Toronto (Romero) -130 O/U 9.5
Recommendation: Over

I’ve been betting the Red Sox Over the total on a consistent basis in recent weeks, cashing far more often than not!  Last night’s game was a classic example of why Boston is such a good Over team – they went Over the total by themselves and still lost, an easy ‘right side’ winner that was cashed by the top of the fourth inning.  There’s absolutely no reason to expect a dramatically different result tonight. Toronto’s Ricky Romero has spent his entire career getting lit up by the Red Sox.  In 11 previous starts against Boston, Romero has an 8.08 ERA, a 2.18 WHIP while allowing the Red Sox lineup to hit .357.  Those aren’t exactly confidence inspiring numbers.  Romero faced Boston twice this year, failing to finish the fifth inning in both outings: 17 hits and 11 runs allowed in just 8.2 innings of work.  Toronto’s lineup broke out of their funk with an Read more

MLB Betting: Cooler temps in the midwest

09.05.2011     06:54 AM     Printer Friendly
It has been raining here in Nashville for the past 36 hours and the temperature has dropped from 100 on Saturday afternoon to a projected high of 67 here on Monday.

We've tracked the weather across some of the more northern areas, particularly in the midwest where we see similar cool temperatures. Check out this baseball schedule and keep in mind the significant drop on the thermometer.

Detroit at Cleveland: 65, high wind in from center, rain

Houston at Pittsburgh: 66, moderate/low winds out to right-center, rain

Chicago White Sox at Minnesota (double header scheduled today): 65, virtually no wind, clear

Arizona at Chicago Cubs: 62, high wind in from center, rain

Philadelphia -3 at New York Jets O/U 36

Danny Watkins is expected to be the only starting offensive lineman to play in Thursday's preseason finale at the New York Jets. "I asked for it," Watkins said. The question is whether the rookie right guard beat his coaches to the punch. Watkins has struggled in three preseason games, and there's only one more game opportunity before the season opener Sept. 11. Center Jason Kelce, also a rookie, isn't expected to play Thursday.
