MLB Handicapper Free Play: Washington Nationals at Seattle Mariners

08.31.2014     08:34 AM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Washington (Roark) at Seattle (Iwakuma) -145 O/U 6.5
Recommendation: Seattle

Going to be proactive and play against Washington’s Tanner Roark in an American League setting as he’s shown small signs of regression of late. Back in June, Roark’s fastball and sinker hovered around the 92-94 mph mark. Of late we’ve see Roark sitting 90-91 mph. As a result, he’s fanned only four batters in his last two starts and 17 in his last 32 IP. Note that this is his first full season in The Show and he’s already surpassed his career high in professional innings (166.2). And as we know, MLB innings are a lot more stressful and demanding. Lastly, while not ultra-potent, the Mariners have the ability to stack their lineup with 7-9 lefties which matches up well vs. Roark’s soft-tossing ways from the right-hand side. Nothing flukey about Seattle’s Hisashi Iwakuma who owns near identical ERA (2.83) and xFIP (2.89). He’s off his worst start of the season Read more

College Football Betting Preview: California Golden Bears at Northwestern Wildcats

California at Northwestern
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Northwestern -12 O/U 61
CRIS Current: Northwestern -11 O/U 60
Andrew's Recommendation: Northwestern

The thing to remember about Cal is if we go back to the early portion of head coach Sonny Dykes' first season there were signs of potential. In Week 1 Cal had Northwestern on the ropes in Berkley before two costly second half interceptions gave the far more experience Wildcats the 44-30 win. And in Week 3, Cal was eventually blown out but hung over 500 yards on a 12-win Ohio State squad. Then the wheels came off as injuries set in, their lack of depth was exposed, and Dykes' pedal-to-the-metal offense put a ridiculous amount of pressure of what would end up being one the worst defenses in the country. My point? If Cal was good enough to play with Northwestern and move the ball vs. Ohio State then a year later (wiser, stronger, and healthier) Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Pittsburgh Pirates at Milwaukee Brewers

Pittsburgh (Worley) at Milwaukee (Fiers) -140 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Milwaukee

The Milwaukee Brewers try to avoid a sweep this afternoon as they send upstart Mike Fiers to the hill. Since being called up, Fiers has been nothing short of phenomenal with a 3-0 record and 0.86 ERA. In no way is this sustainable but Fiers is essentially pitching for a job at this point so bettors are getting his A-game everytime he takes the bump. Vance Worley is very similar to Fiers; soft-tossing right-hander, better suited for the National League, needs deception and some good fortune to survive. Worley's time as a sub-3.00 ERA pitcher are quickly coming to an end. His velocity its start to dip and he's been hit extremely hard his last two starts allowing 18 hits and 8 earned runs. And the opposition this season for Worley has been extremely favorable with only one Interleague start and today marking his first vs. the Brewers who obviously grade out as one of the best offenses in the NL. Overall, Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: San Diego Padres at Arizona Diamondbacks

San Diego (Despaigne) at Arizona (Collmenter) -115 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Over

I don't know how it is possible but Josh Collmenter's velocity continues to trend in the wrong direction. He's almost like a knuckballer where velocity is secondary to movement and location but the proof is in the pudding as Collmenter has allowed 17 earned runs over his last four starts. Kirk Gibson has his concerns about whether or not the funky right-hander is breaking down. Bottom line is if Gibson is spotting something, then we should probably take notice. San Diego's Odrisamer Despaigne burst onto the scene with a handful of stellar starts but like Collmenter, he isn't fooling many hitters these days. He's fanned 37 batters in 60.1 innings and isn't built for much beyond pitching at night in Petco Park. The concern here is obviously two suspect offenses with multiple key bats on the bench. I'l however put my faith in the fact that there will be a lot of balls put in play tonight and both bullpens grade Read more
