MLB Handicapper Free Play: Oakland A's at Toronto Blue Jays

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oakland (Kazmir) -125 at Toronto (Hendriks) O/U 9
Recommendation: Oakland

Big enough starting pitching mismatch where we can come in with a play on the road favorite Oakland A's. Yes, Toronto's Liam Hendriks has put up good numbers in Triple-A (1.48 ERA) and you'd like to give guys who struggled early in their careers and chance to "figure things out" after being sent down. But the problem is Hendriks has never shown the ability to miss bats and faces a squad that is noted for pounding mediocre right-handed pitching. In 33 games against right-handed starters, the A's are averaging over five runs per game. Oakland's Scott Kazmir should be rested and ready after being ejected from his last start for arguing balls and strikes. His seasonal numbers, as a result of good health, have been sharp with a 2.39 ERA and impressive 52% groundball rate. If he can keep the ball in the yard like he has all season then Oakland's lineup will plate enough runs vs. Hendriks to cash our Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Cincinnati Reds at Philadelphia Phillies

Cincinnati (Bailey) at Philadelphia (Hamels) -120 O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Under

Cincinnati's Homer Bailey looks to be rounding into form after a shaky start to the season. Over his last five outings he owns a 3.24 ERA and 27-11 K-to-BB ratio in 33.1 innings. His last outing was particularly sharp as he held Colorado to four hits and one run in 7.1 innings. The Rockies had a whopping 15 swinging strikes which points to Bailey's stuff being extremely sharp. He’ll face a Phillies lineup that hasn't scored in two games and for the month is averaging a paltry 2.8 runs per game. Philadelphia's Cole Hamels is coming off of his best outing of the year as well: 7 IP, 1 ER, 10 Ks vs. the Mets. He's been hit around some since coming back from injury but was a bit unlucky (.408 BABIP) and his strikeout numbers (9.14 Ks per 9) are actually right in line with some of his stellar past seasons. And like Bailey, he is pitted up against a soft offense as the Reds' slugging percentage in down Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Pittsburgh Pirates at New York Yankees

Pittsburgh (Volquez) at NY Yankees (Phelps) -130 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Yankees

It looked as if a new surrounding was going to be the elixir for Edison Volquez after a disastrous 2013. In his first four starts, Volquez posted a sharp 2.02 ERA but some of his success was no doubt fortunate. He wasn't missed many bats (14 Ks in 26 innings) and his BABIP was well below .250. Since then we've witnessed more of the old Volquez with a 9-8 K-to-BB ratio and 8.80 ERA over his last three starts – one of which came against the Toronto Blue Jays. He faces another American League team tonight in a ballpark that isn't an ideal fit for right-handed pitchers. The Yankees are far from potent offensively but I expect them to stack their lineup with left-handed bats tonight. Over the last two years Volquez has had a very difficult time keeping lefties in check. New York's David Phelps is starting out of necessity and I typically wouldn't be looking to support him unless the situation was Read more

MLB Handicapping: King Felix looks to bounceback from K-less outing

05.12.2014     02:08 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
As discussed on today's Sportsmemo Podcast with host Andrew Lange and Rob Veno, bettors should keep an eye on Felix Hernandez’s start tonight against Tampa. Last time out against Oakland, King Felix didn't record a single strikeout in 6.1 innings of work and posted a season-low six swinging strikes after averaging 13 his first seven outings. Hernandez did lose some weight after a recent bout with the flu and admitted his stuff was pretty much non-existent. It was also his third start in a month against the platoon-heavy A's. His velocity appeared right in line with his seasonal averages but we'll be watching him closely this evening to see if there are any more red flags.

“No strikeouts,” he said. “Not a good breaking ball. Not a good changeup. That's what happens when you don't have good stuff.”

“I felt fine,” Hernandez insisted. “I just made a lot of mistakes. I was really in the middle of the plate, and they were able to hit it. No excuse. That Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: New York Yankees at Milwaukee Brewers

NY Yankees (Sabathia) +125 at Milwaukee (Lohse) O/U 8
Recommendation: New York

We appear to be getting a fair amount of value with CC Sabathia and the New York Yankees tonight in Milwaukee. It's well documented that CC's velocity is down and he isn't the pitcher he was three years ago however his decline has been well accounted for in the betting markets. This year's raw numbers don't look good but Sabathia has pitched significantly better than his 5.75 ERA. His strikeout rate is 9.74 per 9 innings and his xFIP is among the league leaders at 2.89. He'll definitely benefit from facing a National League lineup that is without a power bat in Ryan Braun. Hard to say much bad about Kyle Lohse who continues to thrive in the National League. Some of his numbers lean towards fortunate and unsustainable – and he's typically weaker against left-handed bats which the Yankees have plenty of. Off a poor outing and returning to his old stomping grounds I think Sabathia is sitting on a Read more
