Poinsettia Bowl Betting Preview: Boise State Broncos vs. Northern Illinois Huskies

Boise State vs. Northern Illinois
Saturday, December 23, 1:30 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Boise State -8 O/U 56
CRIS Current: Boise State -8.5 O/U 56
Recommendation: Boise State

Two of the best non-Power Five Conference teams of the last decade will battle it out on Tuesday as Northern Illinois faces Boise State in the Poinsettia Bowl. NIU and BSU rank fourth and fifth, respectively, in wins since 2010. Only Alabama, Oregon, and Florida State have more victories within that span. The Huskies fell short of clinching the MAC title with a 34-14 loss to Bowling Green. The Falcons outgained the Huskies 501-259. Despite the defeat, Northern clinched its sixth straight MAC West Division crown and played in some tight road contests against then No. 1 Ohio State and Boston College. Head coach Rod Carey led the school to an 8-4 record and will be coaching his third straight bowl game, losing the previous two. Boise State was looking to improve off of its Fiesta Bowl win in 2014 but had a bit of a drop off this season. After opening the campaign with a 5-1 record, the Broncos lost three of their last five games and Read more

Las Vegas Bowl Betting Preview: BYU Cougars vs. Utah Utes

Las Vegas Bowl
BYU vs. Utah
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Utah -2.5 O/U 54
CRIS Current: Utah -2.5 O/U 51.5
Recommendation: BYU

Utah has been drawing significant support in recent bowl games, in large part due to Kyle Whiitingham’s impressive track record: 7-1 SU, 6-2 ATS in his eight bowls with the Utes.  They blew out Colorado State 45-10 last year.  And bettors certainly haven’t forgotten outright bowl upsets against the likes of Alabama, Cal, and Georgia Tech (twice) in the Whiitingham era.

The Utes have also enjoyed great success in recent seasons against their in-state rival.  The Utes have won each of the last four meetings since 2010 – three tight victories by a touchdown or less, and a 54-10 wipeout in Provo back in 2011. The two teams didn’t meet in the regular season this year, making this matchup a highly anticipated revenge meeting for the slight underdog.

For many of these minor bowls, motivation is a key element of the handicap.  That’s most assuredly not the case in this game.  These two programs Read more

College Football Betting: Texas A&M has issues heading into Music City Bowl

12.17.2015     07:16 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Where there's smoke, there's the potential for a dumpster fire. Something sure smells funny in College Station with quarterback Kyle Allen transferring and Kyler Murray close to doing the same. Murray reportedly wasn't at practice the other day and is currently mulling over his future. Keep in mind former QB Kenny Hill bailed on A&M and took off for TCU last season. There's also rumblings that offensive coordinator Jake Spavital is on the chopping block. Sportsbooks don't know what to think about A&M's Music City Bowl matchup vs. Louisville. The Aggies opened -3 but a number of offshore shops have taken the game off the board.

“I don’t know that I would call it considering. We had a discussion about all kinds of things. I’ve talked to a number players since we got back for the dead period. I’ve been gone for two weeks, we had an official visit weekend, and Kyler is one of many players I’ve talked to in the last few days about a lot of different issues. Like I said today, he is going through some personal things

Potato Bowl Betting Preview: Akron Zips vs. Utah State Aggies

Potato Bowl
Akron vs. Utah State
Tuesday, December 22, 12:30 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Utah State -6 O/U 50
CRIS Current: Utah State -6.5 O/U 48
Recommendation: Utah State

Akron really capitalized down the stretch due to a favorable schedule. They closed out the year with four straight wins against the likes of UMass, Miami, Buffalo, and Kent. And when asked to step up in class, the Zips repeatedly failed with losses to Ohio and Central Michigan at home and a blowout loss at Bowling Green. Keep in mind, Akron was stationed in the far weaker MAC East and avoided playing bowl bound Western Michigan, Toledo, and Northern Illinois. They did post the best defensive numbers in the MAC in league play (4.88 ypp and 326.1 ypg allowed) but again, didn't play three of the top four offenses.

Utah State had an up-and-down season overall but comes in with a far more impressive resume. The Aggies finished a respectable 5-3 in Mountain West play and outgained league opponents by over a year per play. And they didn't "duck" anyone as San Jose State, UNLV, and Hawaii (11-26 combined) were the Read more

College Football Gambling: North Carolina without an OC vs. Baylor

12.16.2015     09:05 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
One of many schools dealing with coaching departures, North Carolina heads into its Russell Athletic Bowl matchup vs. Baylor without an offensive coordinator. Seth Littrell recently took the head gig at North Texas. UNC head coach Larry Fedora did not say who will call plays against the Bears though he indicated he'll have a big hand in the offensive game plan. North Carolina is currently a +2.5 underdog with a total of 69.5.

“We’re game planning the same way we always have as an offensive staff,” UNC head coach Larry Fedora told reporters on Tuesday. “Right now, I haven’t really finally decided how it’s going to go down in the game. I think that I will probably be more involved than I have been, but that doesn’t mean that I will be making all of the calls. I’ve got guys on our staff that can handle it without a problem, so I just need to make the final decision on how we’re going to do it.”

College Football Gambling: Georgia Southern OC and DC remain for bowl game

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Georgia Southern announced that both offensive and defensive coordinators will stay put for the team's bowl games despite the departure of head coach Willie Fritz (Tulane). The Eagles square off with Bowling Green in the GoDaddy.com Bowl on December 23. The Falcons are -7.5 favorites with a total of 66.5.

“All our coaches remain (through the bowl game),” McGee said. “From a coaching standpoint, nothing changes except for me leading the team.”

College Football Betting: LSU seeks better passing game vs. Texas Tech

12.15.2015     10:29 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
LSU's passing game was pretty shoddy this season as Brandon Harris completed only 53% of his passes for 173 ypg. Obviously the Tigers are going to run right at Texas Tech's soft defense with Leonard Fournette but Les Miles, as he seemingly always says, wants more production from the passing game. LSU is currently a -7 favorite over the Red Raiders for its December 29 Texas Bowl matchup.

“Well, we throw the ball at practice all the time, but we want to specifically have a greater, efficient passing game,” Miles said after the Tigers opened bowl practice on Monday evening. “More completions, more yards, more, more. And so I think we’ve got a nice start to the game plan, and I think coach Cam Cameron (offensive coordinator) has kind of got us headed in the right direction.”

College Football Handicapping: Georgia coaching staff gutted prior to bowl

12.15.2015     10:21 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Interesting coaching situation for Georgia with Mark Richt headed to Miami and both offensive and defensive coordinators no longer with the program. It looks like tight ends coach John Lilly will call plays for the offense; he did so during last year's 37-14 bowl win over Louisville. Linebackers coach Kevin Sherrer will be in charge of the defense. The Dawgs have plenty of time to get acclimated with their bowl matchup vs. Penn State not taking place until January 2. UGA is currently a -6.5 favorite with a total of 41.5.

College Football Gambling: Miami looks to end bowl win drought

12.14.2015     07:55 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It's been a long time since Miami won a bowl game. You'd have to go back to the Larry Coker era when the Hurricanes defeated Nevada in the 2006 MPC Computers Bowl. Last season, they lost to South Carolina, 24-21, as -3 favorites. And the year before that they were woodshedded by Louisville, 36-9. Miami is currently a +3 underdog for its Sun Bowl matchup vs. Washington State. Note that the Cougs are also hungry to get into the bowl win column. They've been to the postseason once since 2003; a 48-45 loss to Colorado State in the 2013 New Mexico Bowl.

"We have to change that, definitely. It looks bad for our bowl record," quarterback Brad Kaaya said of the Hurricanes' postseason losing streak.

"We've just got to change it this game. I mean, that's the plan right now. … Miami's been known in the past for winning big games and postseason games. We have to bring that tradition back and hopefully, this starts it off for the next however many decades."
