College Basketball Betting Free Play: NC Central Eagles at Maryland Terrapins

12.10.2014     10:21 AM     Rob Veno     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Rob Veno

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
NC Central +11 at Maryland O/U 122
Recommendation: NC Central

Preseason projection of Maryland being a “bet on” team has taken a bit of a back seat right now due to key injuries. I felt that the Terp’s blend of solid trio of veterans combined with incoming class of potential stars (especially PG Melo Trimble) could be molded into a profitable side by Mark Turgeon. Trimble has been as advertised thus far leading Maryland in scoring (16.4 ppg), minutes played (31.0 mpg), free throw percentage (88.6%), and assists (2.9 apg). The support staff is still formidable with Jake Layman (15.2 ppg) and Richaud Pack (team’s 4th leading scorer) but losing centerpiece Dez Wells for the next four weeks and having starting forward Evan Smotrycz still out is concerning. With four freshman now in the seven man rotation, have to expect some uneven performances this early as they get acclimated. Figure tonight to be one of those spots as veteran NC Central group comes into the Comcast Center in game with great measuring stick significance to them. NCC has a trio of pesky backcourt veterans who defensive can give Trimble difficulty over 40 minutes. Read more

College Football Betting: Nevada faces UL-Lafayette in the New Orleans Bowl

12.09.2014     02:41 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
This time of year it's always nice to get a beat on what type of focus teams have while preparing for their bowl games. Some will take a business-like approach, some will turn it into a vacation, while others simply won't show up (see: USC's infamous Sun Bowl appearance). Nevada is headed to the New Orleans Bowl to take on UL-Lafayette. Early reports indicate that Wolf Pack head coach Bill Polian wants his kids to enjoy the experience even going so far as to allow them a night on the town. That doesn't mean Nevada is going to suffer a three-day hangover and get blasted by 40. But couple the lax atmosphere with the 8 am PT start and it's easy to see why bettors took Nevada down from -3 to a pick 'em/+1.

"They deserve one night to go out and experience the city," said Polian, who added that he met with his leadership council Sunday night. "Now, I'm not condoning knucklehead behavior, but they ought to have one chance to walk around in groups and look around New Orleans and experience it a bit. There will be

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Bowl season has history of controversy

12.08.2014     08:08 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
There was always going to be controversy.  The system is designed to produce controversy or in 21st century parlance, to generate buzz.  And from the beginning, the college football playoffs were fraught with difficult decisions about which schools deserved to play for the title, and which ones would be on the outside of the process, looking in.

1998 was the beginning of the BCS Bowl era.  The 1998 Fiesta Bowl was the first official national title game; coming on the heels of the split national title between Michigan and Nebraska the previous season.  And while there wasn’t much controversy involving the two teams that played for the title (Tennessee and Florida State), the system itself was under fire from the get-go.  One loss Kansas State finished third in the final BCS standings, but the Wildcats were passed over by all the BCS Bowls, relegated to an Alamo Bowl matchup against Purdue.  To the surprise of no one, the system for choosing the BCS Bowl teams was tweaked the following year.

In 1999, Kansas State finished sixth in the BCS standings, yet they were passed over again.  Michigan got a BCS bowl bid over Michigan Read more

College Football Gambling: Sportsbooks post lines on semifinal playoff matchups

12.08.2014     07:11 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The college football four-team playoff is set with top seed Alabama facing fourth seed Ohio State in New Orleans and second seed Oregon taking on third seed Florida State in Pasadena. Once the matchups were announced, various offshore and Las Vegas sportsbooks were quick to post lines. Cantor was one of the first with Alabama -9.5 O/U 56.5 and Oregon -9 O/U 70. CRIS's openers were very similar with Alabama -9.5 O/U 58 and Oregon -8 O/U 71. The only significant move thus far has been on the Crimson Tide with the line now -10 across the board offshore. It will mark the first time since September 2011 that Florida State will play as an underdog.

College Football Betting Preview: Missouri Tigers vs. Alabama Crimson Tide

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Missouri vs. Alabama
Saturday, 1 pm PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
Alabama -14 O/U 48.5
CRIS Current: Alabama -15 O/U 49
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Alabama -11.5
Paul Stone's Recommendation: Missouri

On most of the previous 365 days, the Alabama Crimson Tide had probably heard at least one person reference the improbable "Pick 6," 109-yard missed field goal return by Auburn's Chris Davis which abruptly halted their 2013 national title hopes.

Last weekend, the Tide rallied from a 12-point, second-half deficit to exorcise those demons of the past, scoring a record-setting 55-44 victory over bitter rival Auburn in their regular season finale.

The victory kept Alabama's goal of another national championship in clear focus, but there's one order of business remaining before the Crimson Tide can punch its ticket as one of the entries in college football's inaugural version of the Read more

College Football Handicapping: Fresno tries to ramp up defense vs. Boise

12.03.2014     02:21 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article of Fresno State's defensive preparation for Saturday's Mountain West Conference Championship at Boise State. In the first meeting, also in Boise, the Broncos put up nearly 500 yards on 5.93 yards per play in a 37-27 win. It was actually not that bad of a performance considering FSU allowed 6.22 ypp on the season and 500+ yards on four different occasions. They did however hold their last three foes (San Jose, Nevada, and Hawaii) to an average of 380.6 ypg; all of which resulting in wins and thus a berth in this weekend’s title game.

"They're playing much more efficiently than they did early in the year, which is to be expected. You have a new coaching staff, new terminology, at first it takes a little while. They're into it now and they're just playing at a much higher rate. The quarterback is playing really well and (Jay) Ajayi is really running the ball fiercely. I mean, he's getting after it. Last week against Utah State, the No. 1 rush defense in the conference, he runs for about 230. He's going to be a

College Football Conference Championship Betting: Bettors show early support for favorites

12.02.2014     02:51 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Seen a fair amount of betting market activity for this weekend's college football conference championships. We'll start first with Friday's PAC-12 title game (at Santa Clara) where Oregon opened -13.5 and got popped up to -14.5. Saw a similar move in the SEC Championship with Alabama opening -14 at CRIS, -13 at Pinnacle, but bet up to -14.5 across the board. Per usual, there was anti-Florida State money off the opener of -4. But the Seminoles at -3 was just too attractive to some bettors with the current number back to the original opener of -4. And another favorite being supported with Boise State hit up from -19.5 to -21 in the Mountain West title game vs. Fresno. Still a few -20.5's available both offshore and in Las Vegas. Also looks like Northern Illinois could be headed to -7 vs. Bowling Green after an opener of -6.
