College Football Betting Preview: Louisville Cardinals at Clemson Tigers

10.08.2014     08:58 AM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Louisville at Clemson
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ESPNU
CRIS Opener:
Clemson -10 O/U 48
CRIS Current: Clemson -9.5 O/U 50.5
Rob Veno’s Power Rating: Clemson -9
Andrew Lange’s Recommendation: Over

Check the national rankings for total defense and you'll see Louisville perched atop at no. 1. The Cardinals have allowed a staggering 231 ypg and 12.7 ppg. This is a very talented and active stop unit but if you look at their results you'll notice a common theme. The Cards have had the luxury of playing four underclassmen/first-year quarterbacks (Miami, Virginia, Florida International, and Wake Forest). The only "veteran" they've faced was Syracuse's Terrel Hunt who has all of a full season under his belt. And Hunt isn't a very good quarterback to begin with and played under and offensive coordinator that was recently demoted mid-season. The theme continues this week with Clemson Read more

College Footbal Gambling: Oklahoma State offense lacking potency

10.08.2014     08:22 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The stats don't look all that different but in watching Oklahoma State it is clear this isn't a high powered, dynamic offense. Quarterback Daxx Garman has played well but is still rather "green." And he's not getting much help from the run game with the Cowboys averaging  3.5 ypc vs. FBS opponents. Iowa State came into last week allowing over 5 ypc but held OSU to 3 ypc on 42 attempts. Head coach Mike Gundy says that the team's "vanilla" approach on offense will likely remain until sizable gains are made. Note that the total for Saturday's game at Kansas was bet down from 53.5 to 50.5.

"There's three things now," Gundy said. "One is Daxx. Two is the offensive line. And three, we can't run the ball very well. So we're basic vanilla for the most part.

"Until we improve in some areas, it's difficult to really get out of our box. We have to do the best we can with the inexperience we have at those positions."

College Football Betting Preview: USC Trojans at Arizona Wildcats

USC at Arizona
Saturday, 7:30 pm PT - ESPN2
CRIS Opener:
USC -2.5 O/U 63
CRIS Current: USC -2.5 O/U 68
Rob Veno's Power Rating: USC -3
OTTO Sports' Recommendation: Under

The biggest thing I took away from the USC's game against Arizona State was that despite all the preseason talk about playing up-tempo the Trojans are actually looking to slow things down, especially in the second half of games when their defense is gassed due to a lack of depth. They've been suiting up a limited amount of players and the lack of depth was certainly exposed against the Sun Devils.

Defensively, with the exception of the somewhat flukey Boston College game (425 rushing yards allowed) and the two big plays from ASU late in the fourth quarter, USC's defense has been pretty good. They've gotten progressively better against the run holding Oregon State and Arizona State to 89 yards the last two weeks. That bodes Read more

College Football Gambling: Syracuse demotes offensive coordinator

10.07.2014     12:56 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
For every team that switches to "up-tempo" and thrives, there are two that fail. One of those would be the Syracuse Orange which spent the entire offseason preparing to play in offensive coordinator George McDonald's high octane offense. But after scoring 41 points in losses to Maryland, Louisville, and Notre Dame AND losing quarterback Terrel Hunt for the season, head coach Scott Shafer announced the demotion of McDonald. Quarterback coach Tim Lester will assume OC duties as the Orange play host to top ranked Florida State on Saturday.

"I've had to make a tough decision that has been less difficult to make because of the unselfishness of our teammate and coach George McDonald," Shafer said. "Let me start by saying I've Read more

10.07.2014     08:43 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Quick look at some of the early moves in the Week 7 college football betting markets.

Houston at Memphis
CRIS Opener: Memphis -7
CRIS Current: Memphis -9
Comment: Arguably the most popular team in the betting markets, Memphis has rewarded savvy supporters with a perfect 5-0 ATS record (at worst 4-0-1 ATS).

Washington at California
CRIS Opener: California -1
CRIS Current: California -3
Comment: Bettors not deterred by Cal playing three straight barnburners that featured 328 points and 526 plays.

Arkansas State at Georgia State
CRIS Opener: Arkansas State -14
CRIS Current: Arkansas State -9.5
Comment: GSU was competitive in losses to Air Force (48-38 loss) and UL-Lafayette (34-31 loss). ASU meanwhile can be turnover prone and has struggled to cash in inside the red zone.

Ole Miss at Texas A&M
CRIS Opener: Texas A&M -2
CRIS Current: Texas A&M -3.5
Comment: Classic letdown spot for the Rebels off win over Alabama. A&M in potential bounceback mode after blowout loss to Mississippi State. Read more

College Football Betting: Wisconsin goes with two quarterbacks vs. Illinois

10.07.2014     07:54 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Despite Melvin Gordon putting up nearly a season's worth of yardage in five games (871 yards, 8.3 ypc) Wisconsin finds itself 3-2 after last week's loss to Northwestern. The lack of production from the quarterback position has been beyond bad as head coach Gary Andersen announced both Tanner McEvoy and Joel Stave would play vs. Illinois. Keep in mind in 2013 Stave threw for 2,500 yards and had a respectable 22-13 TD-INT ratio. This season, in four games against FBS competition, UW's quarterbacks (mostly McEvoy) have completed 45% of their passes with three TDs and seven INTs.

“They could possibly be on the field at the same time. I’m hoping that happens because I think that it opens up a little can of worms for people to wonder what’s going to happen, so we’ll see if that can take place for a couple plays and then we’ll also play them in different situations,” Andersen said. “We’re best served to able to play both those quarterbacks.”

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NFL has longstanding relationship with gambling

10.06.2014     12:25 PM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Publicly, the NFL is among the staunchest opponents to legalized gambling in the United States.  Heck, the league famously refused an advertisement from the Las Vegas Visitors and Convention Bureau for the Super Bowl, in an effort to appear like they are really anti-gaming.

Former commissioner Paul Tagliabue and current commissioner Roger Goodell were instrumental in getting the anti gaming Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act attached to the Port Security Bill in October 2006.  The NFL has taken this stance despite the fact that it’s enormously popularity is, in no small part, due to the prevalence of betting on games.

The hypocrisy of the NFL in regards to betting is almost laughable.  The facts, as you will see, clearly show that the league was founded by gamblers for gamblers.  From the NFL’s first television appearance in 1939 through the current TV deals that pumps nearly six billions dollars per year into the league coffers, the NFL’s popularity rests upon the shoulders of those who wager on the outcome of the games.

Here in the 21st century, the NFL is the most popular and profitable sport in the Read more

College Football Handicapping: Golden Nugget GOY vs. CRIS - Week 7

10.06.2014     12:19 PM     Printer Friendly
Week 7's breakdown of Golden Nugget's Game of the Year lines vs. CRIS's current numbers. It's a great tool to spot changes in perception from oddsmakers and the betting markets. What's noticeable this week is the amount of respect road teams where getting during the summer. Alabama was -24 at Arkansas but now a modest -9.5. Same thing with USC -7.5 at Arizona but now only -3 and Auburn -9.5 to -3 at Mississippi State. LSU was -9 but now -1 in Gainesville against Florida. And remember when North Carolina had expectations attached to its name? How about +2.5 to +16.5 at Notre Dame? That's what another dismal start to the season can do to your power rating.
