College Football Betting Preview: Texas Tech Red Raiders at Kansas Jayhawks

Texas Tech at Kansas
Saturday, 9 am PT - FS-1
CRIS Opener: Texas Tech -17 O/U 77
CRIS Current: Texas Tech -16 O/U 79
Recommendation: Kansas

Two weeks ago, Kansas played arguably its best game of the season. Trailing early to West Virginia, the Jayhawks battled back and were within one score midway through the fourth quarter before two turnovers let to two Mountaineer scores and a somewhat deceiving 56-34 final. Kansas still covered the number (+23.5) giving them five straight Big XII pointspread wins dating back to last season but I'm far more interested in what they were able to do on the ground. There was a lot of preseason talk about Kansas going to more of an "Air Raid" style offense but they simply don't have to personnel, particularly at the quarterback position, to chuck the ball around 50 times a game and have success. Against WVU, Kansas ran the ball 50 times and finished with 367 yards on 7.3 ypc. This against a team that coming in was allowing 4.4 ypc. Don't expect that type of success on a weekly basis but keeping the ball on the ground, especially in Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Memphis Tigers at UConn Huskies

Memphis at UConn
Friday, 4 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener: Memphis -14 O/U 70
CRIS Current: Memphis -13.5 O/U 72
Recommendation: Over

Things have not broken right for Memphis in the early going. The Tigers played their opening game against Louisiana-Monroe in the midst of the remnants of Hurricane Harvey – a torrential downpour throughout most of the contest. They had to cancel their game the next week because of Hurricane Irma in Florida. Following the wild upset win over UCLA, the Tigers looked flat against Southern Illinois the following week. Last week, facing UCF, the Tigers got whipped, turning the ball over four times on offense while allowing more than 600 yards on defense.

Make no mistake about it – Memphis is loaded with the type of skill position talent that UConn can’t cover. With QB Riley Ferguson returning for his senior year, 103 career starts back on the offensive line and the likes of RB’s Darrell Henderson and Patrick Taylor (combined more than 6.5 yards per carry) WR’s Anthony Miller, Phil Mayhue and Tony Pollard (37 Read more

College Football Betting Preview: SMU Mustangs at Houston Cougars

SMU at Houston
Saturday, 4 pm PT - CBSC
CRIS Opener: Houston -8.5 O/U 61
CRIS Current: Houston -6.5 O/U 61.5
Recommendation: SMU

SMU is one of the few teams who has yet to suffer a pointspread defeat (4-1 SU/5-0 ATS). The Mustangs offense has been rolling under the guidance of head coach Chad Morris and second-year starting quarterback Ben Hicks. Hicks has thrown 14 TDs and just 3 INTs and while at times erratic (54% completions YTD) he enters off of a season-best 73% in last week’s blowout win over UConn. Overall, SMU has scored 36+ points in every game including against a solid TCU defense. Their balanced attack, which is averaging just shy of 200 ypg on the ground and slightly over 300 ypg through the air, can cause some havoc against Houston. Defense is a strength for the Cougars but they have only faced one real good offense so far in Texas Tech and the Red Raiders rolled up 521 total yards. It’s also worth noting Houston’s terrific standout defensive tackle Ed Oliver may not suit up in this game due to a sprained ankle injury which he sustained Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Wisconsin Badgers at Nebraska Cornhuskers

Wisconsin at Nebraska
Saturday, 5 pm PT - Big Ten Network
CRIS Opener: Wisconsin -13.5 O/U 49
CRIS Current: Wisconsin -12.5 O/U 45.5
Recommendation: Under

Feeling the heat of an 1-3 start, including a home loss to Northern Illinois, Nebraska head coach Mike Riley is well aware his days in Lincoln could be numbered. Said "heat" has cooled off a little bit thanks to back-to-back wins to open Big Ten play. The competition Rutgers and Illinois was far from imposing and it really ramps up moving forward starting with a home tilt vs. Wisconsin. One noticable change during Nebraska's two recent wins was a far more conservative game plan. The Cornhuskers ran the ball 85 times vs. only 45 pass attempts. Check out some of the quotes following NU's win over Rutgers:

“Running the ball to win at the end is a good thing to be able to do,” Riley said. “That mentality as we go Read more

College Football Gambling: UTEP brings back Mike Price because of course it did

10.03.2017     11:50 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In today's That's About Right news we have UTEP deciding to bring back Mike Price after Sean Klugler resigned. For whatever reason, Price is viewed as some sort of "favorite son" despite not doing much of anything outside of an 8-win season his first year on the job. UTEP got progressively worse under his watch yet he managed to stick around for nine (!) years. Price, however, made it clear he's not sticking around and he's there just to provide someone to talk to the press after a blowout loss. Perhaps Price can use last week's pointspread cover vs. Army as motivation; UTEP's first of the season. The Miners are currently +18.5 home underdog vs. Western Kentucky for Saturday.

UTEP Sagarin Ratings since 2004
Price
2004 - 42nd
2005 - 85th
2006 - 103rd
2007 - 130th
2008 - 90th
2009 - 113th
2010 - 121st
2011 - 92nd
2012 - 138th

College Football Betting News: LSU nears full-on dumpster fire status

10.03.2017     11:19 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
You can't make this stuff up. Already feeling the heat after a loss to Mississippi State and a lackluster showing vs. Syracuse, LSU head coach Ed Orgeron felt the need to stick his nose where it clearly didn’t belong and admitted to "offering suggestions" on how LSU should run its offense in the second half of last week's loss to Troy. This of course after Orgeron brought in highly respected offensive coordinator Matt Canada and told Canada the offense is all yours heading into the season. The offense, while far from smooth, hasn't been that bad (6.4 yards per play). And despite being under constant pressure, quarterback Danny Etling has been serviceable (150.8 QB Rating, 35th nationally). Yet, they (we assume Orgeron), insist on inserting QB of the future Myles Brennan at seemingly inopportune times. Add it all up and voila, a home loss to a Sun Belt team. Orgeron now claims he won't intervene with Canada who we'd love to hear from but won't because LSU coordinators haven't spoken to the media since the preseason. Next up for the Tigers, a Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Nevada Wolf Pack at Fresno State Bulldogs

Nevada at Fresno State
Saturday, 7 pm PT
CRIS Opener: Fresno State -9 O/U 55
CRIS Current: Fresno State -9.5 O/U 61
Recommendation: Fresno State

If you want to be proactive instead of reactive as any serious sportsbettor should strive to do – the time to jump on the Fresno State Bulldogs is right now! The betting markets don’t have a strong sense of where Jeff Tedford’s squad should be power rated right now. Fresno was truly a bottom feeder by the end of the Tim DeRuyter era. They went 20-6 in DeRuyter’s first two years on the job with Derek Carr at QB, but dropped to 4-20 in his last two seasons with two of those four wins coming against FCS level competition. The markets did what they do slow to adjust, but eventually adjusting Fresno waaaaay down from where the program had been for the better part of the previous two decades.

DeRuyter, mercifully, was relieved of his duties by the time November rolled around, and Tedford took over as head coach. Read more

College Football Betting Preview: UTEP Miners at Army Black Knights

UTEP at Army
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - CBSC
CRIS Opener: Army -24 O/U 54
CRIS Current: Army -23.5 O/U 48
Recommendation: Army

You can make a strong case UTEP is the worst team in the country right now and oddsmakers are having a real difficult time pricing them. The Miners have not only failed to cover a pointspread in four tries but have come within 10 points of cashing a ticket just once. Last year’s matchup in the Sun Bowl was a blowout from start to finish as the Black Knights put up 600 yards of offense en route to a 66-14 victory. Given the pace and style in which Army plays, it’s extremely difficult to produce that many points and yards which speaks volumes about UTEP’s ineptitude. Has anything changed over the course of a calendar year to suggest the Miners can be competitive? Considering UTEP is being outgained by over three yards per play this season, the answer is emphatically, “no.” There’s been plenty of rumblings that UTEP put no effort into prepping for last year’s contest as Army was the only option team they Read more
