Betting Preview: Hawaii Warriors at Boise State Broncos

Hawaii at Boise State -21 O/U 66
Recommendation: Boise State
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ESPNU

With last week’s 45-10 victory over Idaho, Hawaii has won and covered six straight games and accepted an invitation to the Hawaii Bowl. The Warriors have aspirations of winning the WAC title with the winner of this game in the driver seat.

As usual, Hawaii’s offense is among the nation’s leaders in a bevy of categories but their current run actually had more to do with defense than offense. Over its last six games, UH held opponents to an average of less than 300 ypg while forcing 21 turnovers.

The one issue I have with Hawaii however is its record when asked to step up in class. Looking back over the last three seasons in games against BCS conference schools (including Boise State) the Warriors have put up a dismal 2-9 record with both wins coming against woeful Washington State.

The Broncos come into this game playing lights out Read more

Second half kickoff list

That is going to wrap it up for today. Thanks for following. ANOTHER winning day with the halftime plays (5-3 ATS). That ups our season record to 38-20 66%. Great job by the Sportsmemo Handicappers. If you see one out tonight, pack him on the back. See you next week.

(3:20 PT) Notre Dame not only loses Crist for the year but falls to Tulsa outright. Four wins for the Irish with three to play: vs. Utah, vs. Army, at USC.

(2:30 PT) Nebraska QB Taylor Martinez listed as "?" for second half. Cornhuskers up 24-7 over Missouri.

(2:17 PT) Cal quarterback Kevin Riley doubtful for 2nd half. Cal originally listed as doubtful for the first half. Oregon State up 28-0 at the break. Read more

Michigan State +6.5 at Iowa O/U 50.5
Recommendation: Michigan State
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ABC

The Michigan State Spartans travel to Iowa City for their toughest remaining test of the season as they shoot to stay unbeaten and on top of the Big Ten standings. MSU is 8-0 for the first time in over 40 years and ABC television will carry the action as Iowa tries to rebound off a disappointing 31-30 home loss last week to Wisconsin.

We’ve cashed big on the Spartans with a pair of top 20* Big Drive bombers when Michigan State beat both Michigan and Illinois by big margins. Last week the Spartans made a remarkable second half come back to beat Northwestern on the road, 35-27, and rewarded their betting backers with an even more miraculous pointspread cover thanks to a late touchdown after Northwestern turned the ball over on downs.

The breaks, trick plays, fake kicks, punts and solid fundamentals are all working for the Spartans and while the pressure may be building, so too is Read more

Green Bay at NY Jets -6 O/U 42.5
Recommendation: New York

The injury list remains very long for the Green Bay Packers entering Sunday’s showdown against the 5-1 New York Jets. The Packers have had some of the worst luck in the NFL with injuries this year, especially on defense. There are six contributors listed as questionable on that side of the ball; Charles Woodson, Ryan Pickett, Al Harris, Atari Bigby, Derrick Martin and Cullen Jenkins. There are also four more defenders that are on IR and out for the year, along with tight end Jermicheal Finley and running back Ryan Grant; two key members of the offense. Bigby and Harris are important members of the secondary that have yet to play this season; their return would be a huge help to the Packers defense. Offensively, receiver Donald Driver also joins the list of questionable Packers.

At full strength, I felt like Green Bay was the best team in the NFC this year. However, with the roster in its current state, that is no longer the case. Read more

Arizona at UCLA +9.5 O/U 49.5
Recommendation: UCLA
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT

Two extremes are fresh in bettors’ minds when talking about UCLA and Arizona. For the Bruins, last Thursday on national TV, Oregon did whatever it wanted to do en route to a 60-13 victory. There weren’t a lot of positives to say about UCLA’s performance outside of them not being the first nor the last team to feel Oregon’s wrath. Arizona meanwhile was taking advantage of a good situational play as Washington traveled down to the desert off an overtime victory over Oregon State. The Wildcats jump out early and never looked back as they cruised to a 44-14 win.

As a result of what was last seen, I believe we are getting some decent value with the Bruins at home this weekend. Last season, Arizona was never favored by more than a field goal on the highway including their rivalry tilt against 4-8 Arizona State. And of their six road games, they won three by margins of four, three and five. This year, Read more

Missouri at Nebraska -7.5 O/U 55
Recommendation: Over
Saturday, 12:30 am PT – ESPN

Missouri is about as un-hyped as an undefeated college football team can be for late October. In fact, much of the betting world didn’t seem to be aware of the Tigers at all prior to their home underdog win over No. 1 Oklahoma last week. Money had come in against Missouri in all three of their conference games; and the books kept that money as Gary Pinkel’s squad continued to pull upsets and cover pointspreads.

The money has come in against the Tigers once again this week as they face their stiffest road test of the young season in Lincoln. An opener of +6 has been bet up to +7.5, crossing the key number of seven in the process. If Mizzou can hang within a touchdown of the Huskers, they’ll cash their supporters’ tickets.

Missouri’s stats don’t overwhelm bettors; ranked outside the top 30 nationally in both total offense and total defense. They didn’t Read more

Tulsa at Notre Dame -8.5 O/U 63
Recommendation: Pass
Saturday, 11:30 am PT – NBC

On paper this game has shootout written all over it. The Hurricanes come into this game with the nation’s eighth-ranked offense, averaging close to 500 ypg. The Irish defense has been more than suspect this season and was recently hit with the injury bug as nose guard Ian Williams is out 4-6 weeks and linebacker Carlo Calabrese is currently questionable with a hamstring injury. On the flip side, there is no doubt in my mind that the Irish will move the football. During the offseason Tulsa head coach Todd Graham preached defense and said his squad was going to be much improved. Unfortunately, this is essentially the same weak stop unit we saw all of 2009. The current numbers for the Golden Hurricane are not pretty; 108th total defense (443.2 ypg), 120th pass defense (330.1 ypg).

But as easy as it would be to pull the trigger on the over, there are a few things that concern me. The Irish Read more

Alabama -16.5 at Tennessee O/U 48
Recommendation: Alabama
Saturday, 4 pm PT – ESPN

It may seem like a decent spot to play Tennessee here with the Vols off a bye week and Alabama looking sluggish last week against Ole Miss – at least that was my first reaction. After all, last year Tennessee did give the Tide their toughest battle in a 12-10 defeat. In that contest, UT posted a 339-256 yard advantage and held UA to only 120 passing yards. However, after further research, there is just no way for me to take the points here.

Tennessee had a much more experienced team last year, led by Eric Berry on defense and quarterback Johnathan Crompton and running Monterio Hardesty on offense. They certainly had a trying season under Lane Kiffin, but they were able to turn it up a notch against their biggest rival on the road. This year’s team lacks that experience and talent, and has been overmatched in three of their four games against good competition. The Vols have been able Read more

Pittsburgh at Miami +3 O/U 40.5
Recommendation: Miami

Week 7 kicks off Sunday with the top play on the betting board featuring the Pittsburgh Steelers at the Miami Dolphins. There are nine NFL contests lined at less than 4-points this week including this game with the Steelers installed as a 3-point road favorite.

Both teams enter off solid wins, as Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger returned to action following his suspension and led the Steelers to a 28-10 victory over Cleveland – who was starting rookie quarterback Colt McCoy. The Dolphins won a hard fought game at Green Bay 23-20 in overtime as the Packers had some key players out with injuries.

The Steelers beat the Dolphins here 30-24 in last year’s season finale with a powerful ground game of over 200 yards rushing. Both these teams commit to the run and will not abandon it even if slowed. Pittsburgh leads the league in rushing play percentage at over 57%. That may change with Big Ben back, but the Vikings Read more

Nebraska -5.5 at Oklahoma State O/U 60
Recommendation: Under
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ABC

Last week, I noted the lack of defensive competition that Nebraska had faced heading into its game against Texas. But based on what Oklahoma State has squared up against, Nebraska’s slate was an absolute gauntlet. The Cowboys have gone toe-to-toe with Washington State (120th nationally total defense), Troy (88th), Tulsa (107th), UL-Lafayette (99th), Texas Tech (102nd) and Texas A&M (a very fraudulent 30th). This weekend, they are taking a huge step in class which makes it essentially pointless to analyze their season-long offensive numbers.

I’m not going to overreact to Nebraska’s loss to Texas. The Longhorns were in a great situational spot and had a great game plan. What it boiled down to was that Nebraska finally faced a defense that wasn’t going to allow them to move the ball at will. It was a smack in the mouth, something nearly every team in the country gets at one Read more
