Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NFC Playoff Contenders

12.15.2014     08:12 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Week 15 of the NFL season is in the books and four teams have emerged as clear co-favorites to win the Super Bowl.  Green Bay and Seattle are at the top of the power ratings spectrum in the NFC while Denver and New England look poised for a rematch of last year’s AFC Championship Game.

In my Wiseguy Report over the next two weeks, I’m going to poke holes in every other team that is still alive in the playoff chase.  Can any of the fringe contenders knock off the favorites when January rolls around?  Read on to find out.  This week I’ll focus on the second tier contenders in the NFC, and next week, I’ll shift my focus to the AFC.

The Dallas Cowboys have looked good on national TV repeatedly this year.  They are a perfect 7-0 SU on the road, including impressive wins at Seattle and Philly.  But the Cowboys have at least one fundamental flaw – their defense isn’t much better than it was last year when the Cowboys ranked at or near the bottom of nearly every statistical category.

In 2013, the Cowboys stop unit was ridiculed nationally, allowing 6.1 yards per play (ranked #30 out of 32 Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Bowl season has history of controversy

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
There was always going to be controversy.  The system is designed to produce controversy or in 21st century parlance, to generate buzz.  And from the beginning, the college football playoffs were fraught with difficult decisions about which schools deserved to play for the title, and which ones would be on the outside of the process, looking in.

1998 was the beginning of the BCS Bowl era.  The 1998 Fiesta Bowl was the first official national title game; coming on the heels of the split national title between Michigan and Nebraska the previous season.  And while there wasn’t much controversy involving the two teams that played for the title (Tennessee and Florida State), the system itself was under fire from the get-go.  One loss Kansas State finished third in the final BCS standings, but the Wildcats were passed over by all the BCS Bowls, relegated to an Alamo Bowl matchup against Purdue.  To the surprise of no one, the system for choosing the BCS Bowl teams was tweaked the following year.

In 1999, Kansas State finished sixth in the BCS standings, yet they were passed over again.  Michigan got a BCS bowl bid over Michigan Read more

College Football Gambling: Sportsbooks post lines on semifinal playoff matchups

12.08.2014     07:11 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The college football four-team playoff is set with top seed Alabama facing fourth seed Ohio State in New Orleans and second seed Oregon taking on third seed Florida State in Pasadena. Once the matchups were announced, various offshore and Las Vegas sportsbooks were quick to post lines. Cantor was one of the first with Alabama -9.5 O/U 56.5 and Oregon -9 O/U 70. CRIS's openers were very similar with Alabama -9.5 O/U 58 and Oregon -8 O/U 71. The only significant move thus far has been on the Crimson Tide with the line now -10 across the board offshore. It will mark the first time since September 2011 that Florida State will play as an underdog.

College Football Conference Championship Betting: Bettors show early support for favorites

12.02.2014     02:51 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Seen a fair amount of betting market activity for this weekend's college football conference championships. We'll start first with Friday's PAC-12 title game (at Santa Clara) where Oregon opened -13.5 and got popped up to -14.5. Saw a similar move in the SEC Championship with Alabama opening -14 at CRIS, -13 at Pinnacle, but bet up to -14.5 across the board. Per usual, there was anti-Florida State money off the opener of -4. But the Seminoles at -3 was just too attractive to some bettors with the current number back to the original opener of -4. And another favorite being supported with Boise State hit up from -19.5 to -21 in the Mountain West title game vs. Fresno. Still a few -20.5's available both offshore and in Las Vegas. Also looks like Northern Illinois could be headed to -7 vs. Bowling Green after an opener of -6.

Monster October for Las Vegas sportsbooks

12.02.2014     06:40 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
October was a big month for Las Vegas sportsbooks as they raked in nearly $27 million in profits.

"It was our biggest month in the last couple years in terms of the amount of bets," said Jason Simbal, vice president of race and sports for CG Technology. "The average bet amount is the same, but there's more people betting."

"Sports betting is still a fairly small blip in the radar, but that may not stay the case in the years to come," Rood said. "There might be some winds of change coming down the road, but I see the trend continuing."

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Early season NBA betting trends

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We’re more than a month into the young NBA season, and there are numerous trends that have begun to rear their heads, offering the potential for continued returns throughout the course of the season.  In this week’s Vegas Wiseguy Report, I’ll be putting some of these early season teams and angles that have been moneymakers thusfar under the microscope, assessing their potential continued profitability as the calendar turns to December.

Let me start with a pair of totals trends that have been cashing winning bet after winning bet through the first month of the campaign.  The high scoring, no-defense  Houston Rockets are 14-3 to the Under, followed closely by Oklahoma City at 13-4 to the Under.  Oklahoma City’s Under run makes more short term sense – they’ve been playing without their two superstars Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant, although Westbrook returned to the lineup last w eek and Durant is expected to follow in the near future.  The Thunder have relied heavily on their defense, slowing down the pace and keeping opponents out of the paint with Serge Ibaka and seven footers Kendrick Perkins and Steven Read more

Florida State -10.5 O/U 52
CRIS Current: Florida State -7 O/U 53
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Florida State -10.5
Paul Stone's Recommendation: Florida

Turn the page back to lateThanksgiving 2010, and Will Muschamp was at or near the top of almost everyone's list of young college coaches on the rise and perhaps destined for head coaching greatness.

Muschamp, then the University of Texas' defensive coordinator and that school's so-called "coach in waiting," had earned the reputation of being a talented recruiter and hard-nosed coordinator who had demanded the best out of his defenses at high profile places such as LSU, Auburn and Texas.

After being named the Longhorns' coach-in-waiting in 2008, Muschamp was expected to succeed Mack Brown upon the coaching legend's still to be determined Read more

Mark Cuban makes fun of NFL's archaic stance on sports betting

11.24.2014     12:09 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Mark Cuban spitting knowledge...

“I agree 100 percent,” Cuban said Saturday, via Tim MacMahon of ESPNDallas.com.  “I think we’re the world’s biggest hypocrites when we say, ‘Oh, we don’t want you betting on our games,’ and then we get all excited about the sports betting line and people go to Vegas on trips won from the NBA or NFL.  I mean, it’s hugely hypocritical.”

“We’ll charge the casinos for information sources, video sources,” Cuban said.  “All you’ve got to do is look overseas.  You can go and legally bet on the NBA in the U.K. and a bunch of other countries, and they’re actually big customers of NBA video. . . .  So you’ve got a template already that’s legal in the rest of the world other than America.”

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NFL Power Ratings Movers and Shakers

11.17.2014     08:20 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Following the Week 11 results, for the first time since 2012, I have a team other than the Denver Broncos or the Seattle Seahawks ranked #1 in my NFL Power Ratings.  Seattle has been steadily declining in my power ratings for most of the season.  The Seahawks lack of defensive line depth was problematic in early season losses to Dallas and San Diego, both of whom wore them down in the second half and were able to run the football successfully throughout.  The loss of stud lineman Brandon Mebane only made those depth concerns greater prior to their game at Kansas City this past weekend; a game where the Chiefs ran all over the Seahawks defense.

Seattle also lacks consistent downfield playmakers at the wide receiver position since trading away Percy Harvin.  In their loss to the Chiefs, Seattle lost star center Max Unger to injury as well, truly an impact injury.  If the playoffs started today, the Seahawks would be on the outside looking in.  Clearly, this is not the best team in the NFL as we approach Thanksgiving and the December stretch run.

Denver has been ranked #1 or #2 in my power ratings in every single week since 2012, Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: AFC News and Notes

11.10.2014     08:43 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Cleveland Browns went into Thursday Night’s matchup at Cincinnati with a winning record, but without much respect from the betting markets.  Cleveland had spent the last month feasting on the weak, facing off against the likes of the Titans, Jaguars, Raiders and Bucs in their previous five games; arguably the four worst teams in the NFL.  The Browns didn’t blow out any of those squads; locked in tight, competitive games each time except their only loss during that span – a blowout defeat at Jacksonville.

Without pro bowl center Alex Mack in the lineup over their previous three games, the Browns offense became completely one-dimensional; a team that couldn’t run the football one iota.  Against Tampa’s shoddy rush D, it was 26 carries for 50 yards.  The week before, it was 25 rushes for 39 yards.  The week before that, it was 30 rushes for 69 yards.  That’s less than two yards per carry against weaklings.

So what did the Browns do in their step-up game on Thursday Night at Cincinnati?  Simple – they dominated on both sides of the football, start to finish, rushing for 170 yards and Read more
