Not wanting to be left out, DOJ decides to jump on the anti-sports betting bandwagon

01.23.2013     06:44 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Heading into this week, our power ratings showed sports leagues to be a -2.5 (-120) favorite over New Jersey in the battle for the legalization of sports betting. We were forced to adjust our number to -4 when it was announced that the Department of Justice was upgraded to probable.

“I was told they weren’t going to intervene. Don’t know if my intel was wrong or they got a change of heart for some reason,’’ Lesniak said. “Regardless, bring it on. I’m still expecting our casinos and racetracks to be able to take bets on the Final Four. They will be packed with people, just like Las Vegas.’’’

Super Bowl XLVII betting handle could break all-time record

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Super Bowl XLVII between the San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens is expected to produce near-record betting numbers for Nevada sportsbooks. The highest handle ($94.5 million) came in Super Bowl XL; Pittsburgh defeated Seattle 21-10.

"It's an intriguing match up because the coaches are brothers," says Jay Kornegay, vice president of Las Vegas' Superbook, the world's largest race and sports betting book. "The Ravens, the hottest team, may not have a large fan base, but they certainly add an intriguing element. There's the fact Ray Lewis is retiring. It's one of the better teams versus the hottest team."

Publicly, the NFL is among one of the staunchest opponents of legalized gambling. Former commissioner Paul Tagliabue and current commissioner Roger Goodell were instrumental in getting the anti gaming ‘Illegal Internet Gambling Prohibition Act’ attached to the Port Security Bill. The NFL has taken this stance despite the fact that its enormous popularity is, in no small part, due to the prevalence of betting on games.

The hypocrisy of the NFL in regards to betting is almost laughable. The facts, as you will see, clearly show that the league was founded by gamblers for gamblers. From the NFL’s first television appearance in 1939 through the current TV deal that pumps more than three billion dollars per year into the league coffers, the NFL’s popularity rests upon the shoulders of those who wager on the outcome of the games.

Here in the 21st century, the NFL is the most popular and profitable sport in the. NFL owners are among the richest men in the world; franchises are bought and sold for more than half a billion dollars. However, the league’s humble origins were anything but the extravagant bonanza that is the NFL today. Read more

Sportsmemo's Teddy Covers featured in upcoming sports betting movie Life On The Line

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
I write about sports every week. Next week in this space, I’ll be writing about Super Bowl props. Two weeks from now, it’ll be all about college basketball through the end of March Madness. But not today. Today, I’m going to write about movies. Nobody needs two full weeks of Super Bowl hype!

There are no great sports betting movies –none. Hollywood has produced a handful of great gambling movies – The Sting, Casino, Rounders, The Hustler and Croupier certainly stand out. But when it comes to anything resembling realism in a sports betting movie, it doesn’t exist. Every bettor in a Hollywood sports betting movie is a compulsive addict; every bookmaker is evil and they always win.

There are no exceptions in this tried and true Hollywood formula. If Richard Dreyfuss isn’t uncontrollably gambling on every race in ‘Let it Ride’, then Matthew McConaughey is forcing his clients into bankruptcy and letting his entire career path depend on a coin-flip in ‘Two for the Money’. Even Bruce Willis, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Vince Vaughn couldn’t save last year’s ‘Lay the Favorite’; just Read more

Chip Kelly's departure from Oregon, arrival in Philadelphia causes stir in betting markets

Can Chip Kelly have success in the NFL? Bettors seem to think so. Philadelphia's Super Bowl odds dropped from 30-1 to 22-1 at Las Vegas' Wynn sportsbook. As for Oregon, its BCS Championship odds fell from 5-1 to 8-1.

Sportsbooks and bettors react to San Francisco 49ers, Kaepernick

San Francisco -4 at Atlanta O/U 48.5

Last week, with minimal line shopping, you could have bet the San Francisco 49ers -3 (+100/+105) at home against Green Bay. That seemed like legalized stealing considering as of this morning only a few sportsbooks are offering the 49ers -3.5 on the road at Atlanta for Sunday’s NFC Championship.

"We all knew they were pretty good," said Las Vegas oddsmaker Jimmy Vaccaro, public relations director for William Hill and its 75 Nevada sportsbooks. "Now you throw this kid in there who is energizing the process, and it just means more money on the 49ers. And rightfully so. How high can it go? I don't know."

"We act much quicker on these things than we once did," Vaccaro said. "We have the whole world betting these games, so you have to make them Read more

Who's up for trying to cheat a casino?

Great read by theverge.com on cheating in casinos.

"I don't know whether they're ever going to come up with a foolproof method where the house is always going to win," he continues. "And basically that's what a casino is supposed to be: every game in the house is rigged. Every game is rigged against the player. They're not fair — they're rigged. In every game there's a house edge they assume they have based on their analysis. And the whole thing a professional player is trying to do is figure where they made their mistake, what were they not expecting me to do, what did they think I wouldn't be able to see that I can see. There's just too many smart people in the world working to make money at the games, that protecting them is an impossibility."

NFL Handicapping: Why The Atlanta Falcons are +4

There’s a growing chorus in the handicapping/betting world that the line has over-adjusted in Sunday’s San Francisco/Atlanta matchup for the NFC Championship…with little apparent justification for the current number of San Francisco -4.

Let’s review a few keys.

*Sharps aren’t betting the 49ers at -4. But, they sure loved them at a field goal or less. It’s hard to know for sure from the outside how much of the moves beyond the three can be linked to sharp sentiment or square sentiment (the public). What’s clear is that sharps weren’t thinking the line should be pick-em or -1. Sharps had the 49ers at least 6 or 6.5 points better on a neutral field. Sharps stopped betting the Niners at a number that represented 7 points better on a neutral field.

*The advanced analytic stuff I’ve seen around the web supports that passion at an affordable price. Measures are showing that San Francisco has a much better offense when you adjust for Read more

Proposed Las Vegas stadium an ideal fit for NFL games/team

01.17.2013     06:24 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
So Las Vegas wants to build some sort of "Mega Events Center" similar to that of Cowboys Stadium. If built, said facility would obviously have the capabilities to host football games. What's funny is that those backing the plan aren't asking the NFL to do something logical like pull the plug on Jacksonville or go the expansion route. Instead, they're starting small, like playing host to a preseason game, or the pro bowl. If that works and Bill Belichick and Tom Brady aren’t involved in some elaborate point shaving scandal, then maybe the NFL would warm up to the idea of placing  a franchise in Sin City. The odds on that happening? Not good, according to some.

Wyoming Suspends Second-Leading Scorer Luke Martinez

Luke Martinez has been suspended indefinitely from the Wyoming basketball team as the result of a bar fight last month that left him with a broken finger.

According to the Star-Tribune, there were charges filed against Martinez this weekend as a result of the incident.

Martinez is the second-leading scorer for the Cowboys, a team that remained undefeated until last week and that has set themselves up nicely for a run at an NCAA tournament berth. There is no doubt that this injury — and the suspension — puts a dent into those plans.

Head coach Larry Shyatt has said that Martinez will not return to the team until the legal system has taken its course. For now, the Cowboys are going with a starting lineup consisting of three point guards and a pair Read more
