Clay vs. Liston fight was supposedly fixed by mob

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Thanks to the Freedom of Information Act we get this cool story about the mob allegedly fixing the first Cassius Clay vs. Sonny Liston bout in which Clay won as a 7-1 underdog. It's like something out of a James Ellroy novel...gangsters, J. Edgar, Las Vegas gamblers, and a murder cover-up.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: Who Has What It Takes to Win the Big Dance Part I

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
History shows us many things about what it takes to be a champion. I write this article every year, and every year except for one, I have been able to identify the eventual NCAA National Champion among my elite level teams.

Last year was no exception. Here’s what I wrote about Louisville in my ‘Who Has What It Takes’ article from 2013: “The Cardinals have star power, depth, experience and talent. They rebound, play defense and win games consistently away from home. Rick Pitino’s squad meets all the criteria that has been effective at predicting past championship. Plain and simple, Louisville has what it takes to win it all.” Louisville, of course, was the last team standing in the 68 team field last year, winning the national championship over Michigan.

Past predictions do not necessarily indicate future success, but I’ll stand by my track record in this article. Remember, as always, this gets written before the regular season is over, before the conference tournaments, before the seedings are announced and before a single tournament game has been played.

I’ve nailed the winner of the NCAA tournament four Read more

Las Vegas Sands finally fixes hacked website

02.19.2014     12:55 PM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Remember a few days ago when hackers were messing with Las Vegas Sands' website? It turns out these dudes weren't messing around. They accessed employee SSNs as well as passwords for slots and player information. The hack was instigated by political comments made by CEO Sheldon Adelson. We were actually hoping it was some sort of pro-gambling coalition looking to mess with Adelson's idiotic anti-online gambling crusade.

“We have now determined that the hackers reached at least some of the company's internal drives in the U.S. containing some office productivity information made up largely of documents and spreadsheets,” a Las Vegas Sands spokesman said in an emailed statement. "We have seen the video and are continuing to investigate what, if any, Read more

Las Vegas sports betting pool gets taken down

02.12.2014     11:41 AM     Printer Friendly
Incredible read courtesy of Betting Talk about a massive Las Vegas sports betting pool not paying out its winners.

“I kept hoping that this guy who ran these great pools and was so responsive in his emails wouldn’t have screwed all of these people over like that,” said one contestant who asked to remain anonymous. “But then I thought what the hell does he have to lose? Of course he had about $600k in his possession of other people’s money, so why not just run with it?”

Hackers go after Sheldon Adelson's websites

02.12.2014     08:19 AM     Printer Friendly
Looks like the line of people who have a bone to pick with casino mogul Sheldon Adelson is very long. Yesterday a bunch of websites run by the Las Vegas Sands were hacked.

A day in the life of a Las Vegas sportsbook

02.12.2014     07:42 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Good article on FOX Sports that centers around sports betting in Las Vegas and LVH's head oddsmaker, Jay Kornegay.

“We basically sell integrity,” Kornegay said. “We have to have integrity of these games, because if we lose that, we don’t have a product to sell. …I’m not saying we’re best friends because we certainly have our differences, but we are on the same side. They want to protect their product and we want to protect their product. We want to make sure that these games are fair and true. If there’s any kind of tampering, we want to report it just as much as they want to.”

“There are similarities between the two, sure, but (with gambling) the rest of the world has already legalized it and there’s proof that people already want it,” Kornegay said. “In my eyes, it’s a safer way to handle sports gambling, because you can’t do it on credit. If you bet through a bookmaker on credit, that’s how you get in trouble. If it was legalized, Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: College Basketball Pointspread Underachievers

02.10.2014     07:56 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week I wrote about the four best pointspread teams in the country in college hoops this year – Cleveland State, Villanova, Wichita State and Utah. Between the four, they combined to go 7-1 ATS over the past week, continuing to cover spreads even after doing so consistently for the past three months. In other words, the markets still haven’t caught up with these teams.

This week, I’m taking the opposite approach; examining the very worst pointspread teams in all of college basketball. Why are they so bad against the spread? Will they continue to be money losers as February rolls into March? And what statistical profile do these teams have in common that will help us identify them as early as possible next year? Let’s take a look!

I did a version of this column last year at this same time (second week of February). At that time, the single worst pointspread team in all of college basketball was Indiana-Purdue Indianapolis, abbreviated IUPUI. This year, IUPUI isn’t the single worst pointspread team in college hoops only because they’re tied with South Alabama and LaSalle at the bottom of the ATS Read more

Las Vegas policy doesn't allow gambling on Olympics

02.06.2014     02:10 PM     Printer Friendly
Article courtesy of Linemakers on why betting on the Olympics is not allowed in Las Vegas. Meanwhile, you get down on anything from ice dance to curling futures at offshore sportsbooks like Pinnacle.

"Don't think that the Nevada Gaming Control Board doesn't want to be bothered," said Avello, "because they do listen and want to do what's best for the state, but they need to know every angle of each separate case. I would love to book (Olympic) hockey, and while I could probably prove that a large portion of the players are professional players, there are a handful of those players that are actually amateur that I might not be able to prove."

Steve Wynn teams up with Sheldon Adelson for anti-online gambling crusade

02.04.2014     07:27 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
So now we have not one but two filthy rich, old, delusional casino execs saying no to online gambling.

“This is not a good entrepreneurial opportunity,” Wynn, who knows a little bit about entrepreneurship, said. “Where is the business opportunity? The big problem I see is I don’t see the government letting us keep the money.”

“(Legalizing web gaming) can’t get through the House of Representatives,” Wynn said. “They can’t agree on anything, especially something this esoteric.”
