Nevada pushes for gambling on political elections

05.22.2014     07:53 AM     Printer Friendly
Seems like they've been talking about this for years but Nevada appears close to allowing bettors to wager on political elections.

"It's already going on," Segerblom said. Nevada could make money as the only state to permit the betting on presidential and other federal races. It would not apply to local state races.

NBA Gambling Consensus: Betting public split on Thunder vs. Spurs Game 2

05.21.2014     02:05 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Here are the consensus bets for tonight's Game 2 of the NBA Western Conference Finals between the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs according to Bookmaker. We’ve seen a small move toward the Thunder with the Spurs bet down from -6 to -5.5 earlier today at most sportsbooks. Still a few 6’s in Las Vegas. Note that the percentages are based on the number of bets made not total handle.

Side
Oklahoma City at San Antonio -5.5 (50.1%)

Total
Oklahoma City at San Antonio OVER 210.5 (71.3%)

Moneyline
Oklahoma City +210 (66.2%) at San Antonio

Eating a hot dog in Las Vegas is about to get a lot cooler

05.21.2014     07:11 AM     Printer Friendly
If you've ever been to Chicago and drank more than five beers in a sitting there is a distinct possibility you closed out your night at the famed Weiner's Circle. For those not in the know, it is hole-in-the-wall hot dog stand south of Wrigley Field that caters to drunk idiots by swearing at them and serving great food. The good news is Weiner's Circle is branching out with three new locations scheduled to open this summer in Las Vegas. Hopefully they will have a similar ambience to that of the Chicago location. FYI, the video is NSFW.

NFL Handicapping: Oddsmaker says Tampa Bay Buccaneers are sexy pick

05.20.2014     07:36 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
LVH Sportsbook director Jay Kornegay says the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the first "wise guy" team of the year. Last year the Bucs were lined at 7.5 wins but fell well short at 4-12. LVH opened this year's number at 7ov-120.

“The Bucs have improved tremendously,’’ said Jay Kornegay. the Las Vegas Hilton’s sports book director. “In fact, I called the Bucs the first ‘wise guy’ team of the year. They’ve made a lot of improvements with Josh McCown and Lovie Smith has signed plenty of defensive free agents. They are a solid team and have plenty of potential.’’

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Previewing the Western and Eastern Conference Finals

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Only four teams remain standing in the NBA Playoffs; one of whom will bring home the title less than a month from now.  For all the drama of the first two rounds, it’s an all-chalk Final Four, with the top two seeds from each conference battling for supremacy.

With both Conference Finals getting underway on Sunday and Monday, I’ll take a closer look at the two series.  The goal, as always, is to unearth hidden nuggets pointing towards future pointspread success while assessing pace and totals as well.

Predicting series success generally correlates strongly with predicting pointspread success when it comes to the NBA Playoffs.  But not as much as last year!  In 2013, the Final Four teams combined to go 31-11 (74%) against the spread in the first two rounds of postseason; each of the four teams cashing at a 67% clip or better.  The ‘surprise’ team of the four, Memphis, went 10-1 ATS through the first two rounds before covering only once while getting swept by San Antonio.

The ATS success of the Final Four teams in 2014 pales in comparison to 2013.  Between them, the NBA’s Final Four have turned a Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: NFL Draft has little impact on betting markets

05.12.2014     07:35 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NFL draft is a thing of beauty for those who appreciate hype without substance.   After months of hype – literally, months of it, more hype than we see for any Super Bowl – the first round of the NFL draft attracted 32 million viewers to the coverage on ESPN and the NFL Network.

That’s a massive 28 percent increase over the 25 million that watched the draft in 2013.  On digital media platforms, the draft drew more than 14 million visits, a 54 percent increase from 2013.  And I’m not convinced the ratings gold were all the result of Johnny Manziel‘s crossover publicity.  Fans and bettors alike seem to think that the draft is important.

The pre-draft hype is a series of smokescreens, with GM’s and personnel directors around the league unwilling to divulge any meaningful information to media types and those who communicate with media types.  We see mock drafts for weeks leading up to the real draft, with the likes of Todd McShay, Mel Kiper, Pete Prisco and Mike Mayock offering their informed predictions.

And yet despite multiple revisions of those mock drafts – even Read more

Ben Affleck pinched for card counting in Vegas

05.05.2014     11:16 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Ben Affleck was told his card counting skills were "too obvious" by Las Vegas' Hard Rock Casino and thus barred from the blackjack tables. If only Affleck could have put his alleged smarts to use during the development of the mind-numbingly awful Runner, Runner.

“You’re too good at the game,” Hard Rock security managers are said to have told him as they escorted the actor from the blackjack tables and found him and his wife, Jennifer Garner, the actress, a taxi back to their hotel.

“While playing at a table, Ben was asked repeatedly to stop card counting. However, he would not stop. The casino staff told Ben that he was being too obvious.”

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: A look ahead to the NBA Conference Semifinals

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The first round of the NBA Playoffs is in the books; a near perfect storm for underdog bettors.  Dogs emerged victorious in three series: Portland over Houston, Washington over Chicago and Brooklyn over Toronto.  The underdog – Dallas in every game – went 6-1 ATS in the Spurs – Mavs series.  Other series losers like Atlanta, Memphis and Golden State proved to be feistier than expected.  Put it all together and we saw dogs go 32-15-3 ATS for the full 50 games played in the first round.

Should we expect Round 2 to follow the same path?  All four series certainly look competitive on paper, although top seeds Miami and San Antonio are both significant favorites to knock off Brooklyn and Portland respectively.  The series prices for Washington – Indiana and LA Clippers – Oklahoma City are certainly indicative of tight battles to come.  In this week’s Vegas Wiseguy Report I’ll examine all four of these second round series, looking for potential matchup edges that could offer ATS value as the series progress.

Indiana was lucky to survive their first round test against Atlanta.  The Hawks Read more
