Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: How to bet NFL Season O/U Wins Part II

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week in this space, I looked back at last year’s final NFL standings and discussed the impact of strength of schedule models on those results.  I differentiated between mainstream widely available numbers for the 2014 strength of schedule (simply adding up wins and losses for every opponent) and my own formula, relying on power rating numbers from the week that the game was played.

The goal was simple -- getting more accurate numbers to properly assess last year’s results in strength of schedule context as a starting point for 2015.

We’re done with last year now. This week, I’ll focus on the 2015 NFL strength of schedule as they relate to season win totals.  Once again, my goal is to differentiate between the mainstream numbers and the meaningful ones.

Google ‘2015 NFL Strength of Schedule’ and you’ll find countless charts exactly like this one.
1. Pittsburgh Steelers (.579)
2. Cincinnati Bengals (.563)

Las Vegas Outlaws forced to close up shop

08.10.2015     07:17 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
What a mess. The Arena Football League announced that both New Orleans and Las Vegas franchises have been dissolved. The Las Vegas Outlaws had qualified for the playoffs but obviously won't partake. The eight-team AFL playoffs feature teams with regular season records of 5-13, 8-10, and 7-11. Geesh.

The New Orleans VooDoo and Las Vegas Outlaws organizations have ceased operations effective immediately, the Arena Football League announced today. All players under a continuing contract with either Team shall be placed into the Offseason Assignment Process once a date has been determined.

Since no Team ownership is in place, there is no funding for an Outlaws playoff appearance. The AFL Board of Directors took this into consideration as it was voted that Las Vegas will not take part in postseason play. The Portland Thunder will move into the fourth position in the National Conference playoff picture and face the top seeded San Jose SaberCats during the AFL Quarterfinals on Friday, August 14 at 11pm ET.

Las Vegas bettors with new option to hedge bets

08.10.2015     07:10 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A new way to bet futures in Las Vegas.

“If you are a sharp bettor, you can win off inefficiencies in the markets,” Pergande said. “What you look like in Week 2 is who you are. But in the sports books and the public’s opinion, people overreact. And when people overreact, that means there’s volatility. And when there’s volatility, that’s when you can make money.”

“We talk about the concept of hedging or locking a profit,” said Ted Sevransky, a veteran Las Vegas handicapper known as “Teddy Covers.” “This turns that concept into a reality.”

NFL Handicapping: Las Vegas oddsmakers react to Deflategate

08.05.2015     01:42 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Las Vegas oddsmakers talk about Tom Brady's suspension and how it has impacted their lines as well as placing limits on New England's season over/under wins.

"Home team, capable backup [quarterback]," Rood said in explaining New England's favored status in the opener. "We've put some strong limits on it. If Brady plays, that number could jump to six."

"From what I'm hearing, Jimmy G is going to be more than a capable replacement and [Patriots Coach Bill] Belichick usually always gets his guys ready to go," Rood said about the 10 1/2 number.

"What I don't want to do is have a knee-jerk reaction."

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: How to bet NFL Season O/U Wins Part I

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
When looking at the entirety of the NFL futures market, Super Bowl odds and odds to win divisions or conferences only give bettors one choice – betting ON a particular team.  Then that team has to beat out all of their competition to win the division/conference/Super Bowl for you to cash, offering the potential for big payday longshot returns, but cashing a low percentage of the wagers that are made.

NFL Season O/U Win totals, on the other hand, offer bettors the opportunity to bet AGAINST teams in relatively low juice situations.  And with win totals, even when betting Overs, the team you are betting on doesn’t have to win anything big.

For example, the Buffalo Bills didn’t win their division last year; unable to get past mighty New England.  They didn’t win the AFC or the Super Bowl.  But they cashed every Over ticket that was bet on their season win total before December rolled around.  Buffalo’s 9-7 campaign offered a no sweat positive return-on-investment for a squad lined at 6.5 or 7 wins prior to the season.

In my opinion, NFL win totals remain among the most profitable set of wagers Read more

Casinos forced to deal with rule-breaking high rollers

07.31.2015     08:22 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Not surprising, but for all the stringent rules casinos have, those who enter with a suitcase full of cash can typically get away with anything they want. That includes acting like a spoiled six-year old who doesn't like it when they lose.

"All men are created equal except in the casino," Glen Costales, the pit manager, said at a hearing before a tribal gaming commission in May. Transcripts of the hearing were obtained by The Associated Press. "If it's a premium player, he gets away with a lot more than the five-dollar player would get away with."

"The casinos pretend they have rules that are set in stone, like going into a bank or dealing with a police station. Are they supposed to allow late bets? Absolutely not. Do they do it all the time? All the time," said Kaufmann, a dealer who sees plenty of crude behavior himself. "The abuse, the screaming, the cheating, the sexual harassment. Throwing things around. It's worse all the time."

Treasure Island to offer mobile app

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Las Vegas' Treasure Island casino and sportsbook is going the mobile app route.

“We continually evolve our race and sports book to bring the latest in technology to our customers,” Treasure Island’s race and sports book director Tony Nevill said.

“With mobile usage dominating the marketplace, creating an app was the obvious next step.

“Now, even when a guest can't be present in our race and sports book, they can still participate in real time, real money sports wagering in Nevada.”

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Breaking down the NFL's new offensive coordinators Part 2

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week in my Wiseguy Report, I wrote about a half dozen offensive coordinator changes in the NFL this past offseason.  This week, I’ll finish my analysis of the other half dozen offensive coordinator changes from around the league, with specific focus on how big of a change and how steep of a learning curve these offenses face.  Coordinators are listed in alphabetical order based on their new teams.

Kyle Shanahan, Atlanta Falcons - Shanahan’s dad was certainly a major factor in Kyle’s first few NFL coordinator jobs; none of which have been particularly successful.  Shanahan worked under Mike Shanahan protégé Gary Kubiak as OC in Houston in 2008-2009, and then worked under his dad for four years with the Redskins.  During that span, his team’s reached the playoffs only once – the ill-fated RG3 injury game against Seattle.  Last year’s debacle in Cleveland didn’t exactly bolster his Read more

Gambling Update: Fantasy Football company sues NFL

UPDATE

The NFL is being sued for $1 million in damages after they forced the cancellation of a fantasy football convention in Las Vegas.

"If we had known about the issue of the place or thought that was something that could've been an issue, the NFL could have told us right away," Romo said on ESPN's The Herd with Colin Cowherd. "The NFL never called me or my agency or the NFFC."

NBA Gambling: League won't place expansion team in Las Vegas

07.20.2015     08:31 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
An NBA expansion team in Las Vegas? Not likely.

"There are no obstacles whatsoever in terms of the city to us coming to Las Vegas," Silver said. "We had an All-Star Game here (in 2007). We chose to put our largest summer league here. We have never suggested the fact sports betting takes place legally in Las Vegas is an impediment to us coming here. The reception we have received from this community has been terrific.

"The ultimate issue is that we are just not in an expansion mode right now. It doesn’t mean that expansion will never be in our future, but it’s just not at the moment."
