SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Early reports out of Pittsburgh indicate that two rookie offensive linemen could start – something that has happened only three times over the last 45 years. The Steelers were 14th in rushing yards per game (118.9) and t-23rd in sacks allowed (42) last season.

Football Handicapping: The impact of travel in the NFL

07.03.2012     08:45 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Grantland's Bill Barnwell did some extensive research on the impact of travel in the NFL.

As you might suspect, the NFC West gets royally jobbed by their travel requirements every year. Of the 10 longest distances traveled by teams in a given season over the past 10 years, seven belong to either the Seahawks or the 49ers.

The Steelers played 15 of their 16 games in the Eastern time zone, with a lone trip to the Central time zone waiting for them against the Titans in Week 16. Part of that is a lucky out-of-division schedule, but the Steelers also benefit by playing in a division with three opponents who each reside within 260 miles or so of Pittsburgh.

Handicapper Teddy Covers' Super Bowl XLVI Gambling Preview

01.30.2012     10:34 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The 2011 Super Bowl was not a good one for the sportsbooks here in Las Vegas and offshore. They underestimated the groundswell of support for Green Bay and the Over. Money poured in on the favorite, driving the line up as high as -3 from a -1 opener. And money poured in on the Over; the closing total was as high as 55 at several key locations. When the Packers won 31-25, bettors cashed in on both the side and total. It was the worst Super Bowl result for the books since the infamous Super Bowl XIII, back in January 1979 when the Steelers beat the Raiders 35-31 in a game that bounced between -3.5 and -4.5 all week – a dreaded “middle” for the biggest game of the year.

The books will have a definite rooting interest in the Super Bowl again this year, because for the second consecutive season, the books underestimated the support for the hot team down the stretch. New England opened as a 3.5-point favorite over the New York Giants in many key locations, with one influential sportsbook – the Wynn – even hanging a -4 on the Patriots.

-3.5 or -4 was not the correct line, as determined by the betting markets. The books spent the first week Read more

Super Bowl XLVI Gambling: Biggest bets it Super Bowl history

01.27.2012     08:02 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A breakdown of some of the biggest reported bets in Super Bowl history.

$2.4 million
In Super Bowl XXIX, someone bet $2.4 million on the San Francisco 49ers to beat the San Diego Chargers (laying 8 to 1 odds to win $300,000) at the Mirage Hotel Sports Book in Las Vegas. Six Steve Young TD passes later, he won the bet.

$3.24 million
In 2002 a well-known Hollywood agent to the stars bet $1 million offshore that the underdog New England Patriots would cover the 14-point spread against the St. Louis Rams, and bet another $400,000 on the Patriots to win outright at 6 to 1 odds. Final Score: New England 20-17.

$1 million
In Super Bowl XXXI, a client of TheGreek.com took the Green Bay Packers for $500,000 to beat New England by more than 13½ points and the Patriots for another $500,000 to lose by fewer than 14½ points. The only way he could win both bets and avoid losing the $50,000 vigorish is if the Packers won by 14 points. Final score: Green Bay 35-21.

$1.65 million
The late legendary oddsmaker Bob Martin took a $1.65 Read more

A perfect match: Gambling and the Super Bowl

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Publicly, the NFL is among one of the staunchest opponents of legalized gambling. Former commissioner Paul Tagliabue and current commissioner Roger Goodell were instrumental in getting the anti gaming ‘Illegal Internet Gambling Prohibition Act’ attached to the Port Security Bill. The NFL has taken this stance despite the fact that its enormous popularity is, in no small part, due to the prevalence of betting on games.

The hypocrisy of the NFL in regards to betting is almost laughable. The facts, as you will see, clearly show that the league was founded by gamblers for gamblers. From the NFL’s first television appearance in 1939 through the current TV deal that pumps more than three billion dollars per year into the league coffers, the NFL’s popularity rests upon the shoulders of those who wager on the outcome of the games.

Here in the 21st century, the NFL is the most popular and profitable sport in the. NFL owners are among the richest men in the world; franchises are bought and sold for more than half a billion dollars. However, the league’s humble origins were anything but the extravagant bonanza that is the NFL today. Read more

Oddsmaker weighs in on this weekend's NFL Playoffs

01.06.2012     10:58 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Some quotes on this weekend's NFL Playoffs from Wynn oddsmaker John Avello courtesy of ESPN.

Cincinnati-Houston: "...The homefield can't be worth more than three for either side. T.J. Yates is a better option than Jake Delhomme. But when they play with him they never score more than 20 points. It's a tough call. We are at three minus-120 with the juice and I wont go further. My next move is to minus-3.5."

Detroit-New Oreleans: "...The Lions can score with anyone, too. I could see this game coming back down, some group will release this game as a play and everyone will play it."

Atlanta-NY Giants: "...I think the public thinks this Atlanta team is much better than the Cowboys and it is the same spread. Pretty soon I will go to 2.5."

Pittsburgh-Denver: "We are actually at 8.5, there will be a lot of teaser money, people will tease the Steelers down to one to win the game, that is why I opened it at eight. This game is going to be bet under, we are at 34 after opening Read more

NFL Gambling Preview: Baltimore Ravens at Cincinnati Bengals

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A number of playoff scenarios and implications headline NFL Week 17 action. Here is some of the good, bad and ugly for teams in this week’s match-ups. Note that all 17 games are divisional contests.

Baltimore -2 at Cincinnati O/U 38.5

Key AFC North showdown as Baltimore can clinch the AFC’s No. 1 seed combined with a New England loss. The Ravens will win the division and No. 2 seed with a win or a Steelers loss. But the Bengals are pushing hard for a playoff spot few thought they could achieve this season. Cincinnati makes the playoffs with a win, or a Tennessee win, NY Jets loss and Oakland loss. Both defenses rank top-6 in total yards and yards per play. Baltimore has been inconsistent despite an 11-4 record with struggles on the road including losses at Tennessee, Jacksonville, Seattle and San Diego. Cincinnati (9-6) has struggled against the stronger teams, losing to San Francisco, Houston, Pittsburgh (twice) and Baltimore (0-3 SU/ATS mark against some of Read more

NFL Handicapping: Playoff scenarios heading into Week 17

12.27.2011     12:43 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Even though there are only three of 12 postseason spots yet to be determined heading into Week 17, there are a slew of potential scenarios in terms of home field advantage and matchups.

AFC: New England (first round bye), Houston, Baltimore and Pittsburgh are all in. If New England beats (or ties) Buffalo OR Baltimore or Pittsburgh lose (or tie), the Patriots would clinch home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Ravens and Steelers still have a shot at the No. 1 seed but not only need to win but also have the Patriots lose. Denver can win the AFC West with a win over Kansas City or an Oakland loss (vs. San Diego). If Denver and Oakland both win, then the Raiders can make the playoffs with Cincinnati and Tennessee losses or Cincinnati loss and New York Jets win. The Bengals are in if they beat Baltimore. The Jets can get in but need to first beat Miami and have the Bengals, Tennessee and Denver/Oakland lose. Same type of crazy scenario for the Titans who must first win at Houston.

NFC: Green Bay (home-field advantage throughout), Read more

Monday Night Football Betting: Money starting to come in on Pittsburgh

12.19.2011     10:39 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Pittsburgh at San Francisco -2.5 O/U 38

Thoughts on tonight's Monday Football contest between the Steelers and 49ers from Hilton oddsmaker Jay Kornegay. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Ravens' loss to the Chargers put the Steelers back in control of the AFC North, hence the decision to play Roethlisberger.

Jay Kornegay says: "The 49ers and Steelers game was off the board all week due to the Ben Roethlisberger injury. We finally posted the 49ers a 3-point favorite on Saturday despite the sketchy news on Big Ben. There's a big difference between Roethlisberger and Batch. Last week, the St. Louis Rams slipped in Sam Bradford and the line dropped two points. If Bradford doesn't start, the line would have gone up to minus-11. How much is a quarterback worth? It depends on the backup.

"We'll proceed with caution on this game. I believe Roethlisberger Read more
