NFL Handicapping: Kansas City's Crennel out as defensive coordinator

Kansas City at Pittsburgh -12.5 O/U 43

Kansas City's Romeo Crennel will no longer serve as the team's defensive coordinator. He plans on spending more time with an offense that has scored 45 points its last four games. Amazingly, the Chiefs have yet to lead a game in regulation this season.

"We have a young team, you know? And some guys, their perception, all right, may be that I'm a defensive coach, or a defensive coordinator, and I don't care about other parts of the team, which is not true," Crennel said Monday. "They will see I'm concerned about the whole team."

Pittsburgh at New York Giants -3.5 O/U 47.5

Because of Hurricane Sandy, the Pittsburgh Steelers will fly to New Jersey on Sunday morning before facing the New York Giants at 4:30 pm ET. Over the last seasons, the Steelers are 3-10 ATS on the road.

"I don't think I have traveled and played a game on the same day since high school," Steelers linebacker James Harrison tweeted.

"Before we looked for another one (hotel), we decided we just didn't feel right about asking employees at any of the hotels down there to start making a bunch of extra efforts to accommodate us, when so many of them are having issues themselves," a senior Steelers official told ESPN's Rachel Nichols.

"There are a lot of very difficult things going on for a lot of people in that area. Us having to fly in and out on the same Read more

The betting markets are having a hard time pricing the Giants correctly this year. The defending Super Bowl champs have clear weaknesses. Their defense is leaky, allowing 6.2 yards per play against them – only the Saints and Bills have been worse in that advanced metric stat. And those weak defensive numbers have come against one of the weaker schedules in the NFL, facing only one opponent with a winning record all year.

The Giants have been outrushed on a yards per carry basis and it’s getting worse, not better – Ahmad Bradshaw has been held under four yards per carry in each of their last two ballgames. And the Giants seem to play better football away from home than they do in the new Met-Life Stadium. They are 1-3 ATS as home chalk Read more

NFL Gambling Notes: Pittsburgh Steelers banged up along offensive line

Pittsburgh -2.5 at Cincinnati O/U 45.5

Offensive line issues for the Pittsburgh Steelers heading into Sunday night's tilt against Cincinnati.

Right tackle Marcus Gilbert (ankle) has been ruled out and center Maurkice Pouncey (knee) is considered questionable, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin announced Tuesday. Rookie second-round draft pick Mike Adams will make the first start of his career while filling in for Gilbert, and Doug Legursky would start for Pouncey.

You can forgive Pittsburgh Steelers backers for being a little upset after Sunday’s game. The Steelers defeated the Eagles 16-14 but failed to earn the pointspread cover as 3-point home favorites. Pittsburgh outgained Philadelphia 343-246, had a 136-78 on the ground, and were +2 in turnovers but still could not get the ATS win. It was a frustrating instance where statistical domination did not take the cash.

Imagine the surprise for Denver Broncos supporters who might have turned off the game when New England led 31-7 thinking a +6 pointspread cover was impossible. Sure enough two consecutive Denver touchdowns followed by a New England turnover and it was suddenly 31-21 with the Broncos inside the red zone looking for more points. The air was then taken out of the balloon when Broncos running back Willis McGahee fumbled inside the 10 and it was recovered by New England. This was another version of an NFL teaser. New England ran its no-huddle offense at a pace that would have made coaches like Chip Kelly and Dana Holgorsen proud. New England ran 77 offensive plays in the game and if they can finish off drives as efficiently in the red zone as they did on Sunday, Read more

Teddy Covers' Wiseguy Report: A look back at NFL Week 5 action

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A full quarter of the NFL teams entered Week 5 at .500 and two more reached the .500 mark after notching victories on Sunday. I focused on five of those teams closely during this week’s NFL mayhem. Here are my notes from their respective performances.

Buffalo Bills - How bad is this defense? Well, they set an NFL record for futility – no team in league history had ever allowed 300 rushing yards and 300 passing yards in the same game. And that came just one week after they allowed 45 second half points on seven consecutive scoring drives against New England, making the Bills the first team since 1950 to allow 550+ yards in back-to-back weeks. Now that’s a struggling stop unit!

This pass D has awful fundamentals, giving up yardage in chunks. Every decent QB should have a field day throwing downfield -- there's no pass rush, and these cornerbacks are not shutdown guys. And there’s no question that this defense lacked effort throughout the second half here – they flat out quit.

We got the ‘bad’ Ryan Fitzpatrick today. Fitz continues to struggle with his deep throws, missing Stevie Johnson for a sure Read more

Philadelphia at Pittsburgh -3 (-125) O/U 43
Recommendation: Pittsburgh

The Steelers will be looking forward to getting back out on the football field Sunday after stewing about their loss to the Oakland Raiders for two weeks.  Yes, the Steelers will be off their bye week for this game, but perhaps more importantly will welcome back defense stalwarts Troy Polamalu and James Harrison.  When you’re talking about two of the last four defensive players of the year, you’re talking about real impact players.  With the Eagles vulnerable from an offensive line standpoint, the Steelers should add to their disappointing amount of just five sacks.  In addition, Rashard Mendenhall is expected to return to the field as well.  Pittsburgh’s running game is averaging 2.6 yards per carry with its longest run from scrimmage just 13 yards.  Look for the Steelers to hit a few big runs up the middle where the Eagles can be vulnerable.  The Read more

The reigning #1 defense in the NFL was torched by Peyton Manning and the Broncos passing game in their opener.  They got torched at Oakland prior to the bye as well, allowing the modest Raiders offense to score on each of their last five drives of the game.  And even Pittsburgh’s shutdown performance in their lone win this year against the Jets must come with an asterisk, because the Jets’ offense hasn’t moved the football since.  For a defense that jettisoned veterans like James Farrior, Aaron Smith and Chris Hoke in the offseason, there are clearly some questions right now.  Here’s Troy Polamalu’s quote: “This team changed more than ever because of Read more

Philadelphia at Pittsburgh -3 O/U 43.5

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mile Tomlin said that both Troy Polamalu and James Harrison are expected to play Sunday against the Eagles.

"Based on what I am looking at on how we worked yesterday, I think that is a safe assessment (that they will play)," Tomlin said Tuesday, according to the team's website. "We will watch these guys as we proceed throughout the week. All guys have performed well and were able to get through practice and we're optimistic that they're going to be full participants."

Pittsburgh -3.5 at Oakland O/U 45.5

We swear the AP wrote this article three years ago. It goes like this: Oakland coordinator (insert name) preaches patience due to new system. Over the last three years, Oakland has had three different head coaches, offensive coordinators, and defensive coordinators.

“Let’s keep things in perspective for a second here,” Knapp said. “We’ve played two games in the regular season on offense. We’ve had two different centers and a right tackle who played half a game last week. We need some patience. You can’t develop a scheme in two weeks in a regular season.”

“It will take a little while. It will take a little while,” Knapp said. “I don’t know Read more
