Pittsburgh at Carolina -2.5 O/U 34.5

On how much the starters will play in the final preseason game: We'll get a feel for that as we get into the game. Obviously, we'd like to see a couple of really good series and then go from there. On what he is looking for in the last preseason game: As the young group of players go, those guys that are all in the heated battles for the second and third Read more

Gambling on fantasy football apparently differs from betting on games

09.01.2011     07:01 AM     Printer Friendly
Article about NFL fantasy football becoming more gambling-centric. For some reason it is considered a "game of skill" and thus avoids getting lumped together with actual sports betting – isn't it the complete opposite?

"Everybody wants inside tips, who's hurt and all that," says Steelers linebacker James Farrior. "It's almost like a bookie asking you questions about the game. It's pretty weird, but, hey, it's a big business."

"If someone in our league had significant gambling debts of any kind, we'd be on top of that very quickly," Aiello said. "With that kind of financial problem, (a player) becomes susceptible to being corrupted."

NFL Preseason Handicapping: Steelers plan on testing out no-huddle

Atlanta at Pittsburgh -3 O/U 36

The Pittsburgh Steelers claim they will run some no-huddle offense the final two games of the preseason. Head coach Mike Tomlin added that the starters will play the entire first half against Atlanta on Saturday.

"I love it, and so do the wide receivers," Roethlisberger said. "I like the change of pace. I like the up-tempo, and it's hard for the defense to substitute."

"We want to establish ourselves and what we want to do," Roethlisberger said. "We may go some no-huddle, and if we do that then I would like to execute that well."

Atlanta at Pittsburgh -4 O/U 36

Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith hinted that his starters will get plenty of playing time during Saturday's game at Pittsburgh. Smith said the team will switch from training camp to regular season mode which will include actual game planning and film study. Thanks to Rob Veno for passing along the link.

“In terms of the amount of snaps that they are going to play, I don’t know that we’ve sat down and decided,” Smith said. “But we want to keep those [starting] units in there and get them as many exposures as possible.”

NFL Preseason Betting Notes: Eagles starters will play first half vs. Steelers

Philadelphia at Pittsburgh -3 O/U 33.5

Reports out of Philadelphia Eagles camp have the starters playing the entire first half of Thursday's game at Pittsburgh. There are however more than a few players not expected to play due to injury.

The biggest names, of course, are wide receivers Smith (knee) and Jeremy Maclin (illness) and defensive tackle Mike Patterson (seizure). Smith and Maclin haven't practiced with the team yet this summer and Patterson is still on a slow return after being hospitalized following a seizure he suffered on the field.

Also missing Thursday's game will be defensive end Brandon Graham (knee), tackles Ryan Harris (back), Winston Justice (knee) and Read more

NFL Preseason Betting Pick: Pittsburgh Steelers at Washington Redskins

Pittsburgh +2.5 at Washington O/U 33

Yes, Mike Shanahan has a solid track record as a preseason head coach. His teams in Oakland, Denver and Washington have gone a combined 44-28 SU, by far the best record for any active head coach. Shanahan has been a long term money winner as well, with a decent track record (39-31-2 ATS) covering pointspreads at this time of the year.

Shanahan’s long term success is about the only reason I can think of why the Redskins have taken so much money in their matchup tonight against the Pittsburgh Steelers. When we break down just about every other factor, it’s the road team that has the edge.

First, let’s not forget that Mike Tomlin has been a SU and ATS machine in the preseason with the Steelers, even though his track record isn’t as long as Shanahan’s. The numbers don’t lie – Tomlin’s Steelers have gone 13-4 SU over the past Read more

NFL Preseason Betting Preview: Pittsburgh Steelers at Washington Redskins

Pittsburgh at Washington -2.5 O/U 33

Good breakdown of both sides for tonight's Pittsburgh at Washington preseason matchup. According to Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, the starters will play about 10 snaps less than a normal Week 1 preseason contest. Pittsburgh's roster is pretty much set with only one free agent acquisition. Washington meanwhile must sift through its busload of free agent pickups. One thing that is for certain is that Tomlin and Washington head coach Mike Shanahan won't be sharing game plans with one another like other coaches in the league have been rumored to do.

"First of all, I don't think it's legal," Shanahan said. "Second thing is I've always been under the mindset that whatever the other team Read more

NFLX Betting Notes: Washington's Beck unlikey to play against Steelers

Pittsburgh at Washington -2 O/U 33

According to Washington Redskins tight end Chris Cooley, quarterback John Beck is unlikely to play in tonight's preseason opener against Pittsburgh. Beck has been hampered by a groin injury which leaves Rex Grossman, Kellen Clemens (signed July 27th) and rookie free agent Ben Chappell. Grossman recently made headlines by calling for the Redskins to Read more

NFL players take a pass on casino ribbon cutting ceremony

07.01.2011     06:53 AM     Printer Friendly
A casino just outside of Pittsburgh is having a ceremony for the opening of a high stakes gaming room with James Farrior and Charlie Batch slated to cut the ribbon. Perhaps influenced by the casino-investment-gone-bad situation of a few weeks ago, both players passed on attending the event for fear of being punished by the NFL.

"I wasn't planning on doing any gambling there," said Farrior, 36. "I didn't even think about it. After looking into it, I'm not going to do it. I don't want any ripples with the NFL. (NFL Commissioner) Roger Goodell already said if you break the rules during the lockout, you will get in trouble when we come back.''

"I had no intentions of going," Batch said. "You know to stay away from casinos Read more

Arena Football Betting: Open tryouts for once proud franchise

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Tampa Bay Storm have won five Arena Football League championships; more than any other team. At one point, they reached the playoffs in 19 consecutive seasons. Legendary head coach Tim Marcum is a Hall of Famer; the AFL’s all time winningest coach. Last August, the Storm played for another title in Arena Bowl XXIII, although they came up short at Spokane, losing to the Shock 69-57. Still, it was yet another impressive season for one of the league’s true ‘glamour’ franchises – the moral equivalent of the Pittsburgh Steelers or the Dallas Cowboys in the NFL.

Since the end of the 2010 campaign, the Storm have fallen hard and fast. Marcum was forced out this past offseason. The coach had suffered more than his share of controversy in the past – a well publicized DUI, an insurance fraud scandal, another scandal where he handed out Arena Bowl championship rings with fake diamonds to a dozen players, and a four-game suspension for salary cap violations – just to name a few.
