Generous marine takes home $2.8 million from Las Vegas slot machine

02.27.2012     07:40 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A marine who was stationed at Las Vegas' Nellis Air Force Base decided to kill a few hours at the Bellagio on Sunday and walked away with $2.8 million on a penny slot. Three days earlier, he was accepted as a bone marrow donor. Reports indicate that bone marrow donations having skyrocketed 350% nationwide following news of the win. He will receive roughly $100K a year for the next 20 years.

“They asked me if I was sure I wanted to go through with it, because it’s kind of painful, but what’s a little pain if it will save someone’s life?” the U.S. Marine said Friday. “I look at this as kind of good karma for that.”

“Dude, what just happened?” Degenhardt remembers asking his friend.

“You just won,” the buddy told him.

“Cool,” Degenhardt said.

Mike Tyson hosts stand-up show at MGM Grand Theater

02.27.2012     07:23 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Las Vegas Strip is about to get a new act in the form of Mike Tyson. Iron Mike is starring in his own one-man show, Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth - Live on Stage, starting in April at the MGM Grand's Hollywood Theater.

“The cops pulled me over one day. I was on coke; I was all drunk and high on cocaine, and I told the cops I was lost and couldn’t find my way around, and the cops drove me to the party,” he says. “Are you crazy? It was just before I went clean and sober. The cop who pulled me over, he says, ‘You were great in “Hangover,” ' and he drove me to the dope house, to a party.”

This isn’t to say all of those subjects will be broached every night. The show’s format is still in its infancy (Tyson doesn’t even start rehearsing until March 5). He might sing, as a pianist and a vocalist might well be in the final version of the show. He might take questions from the audience, too, opening up delicious possibilities of the boxing icon facing Read more

Grantland goes behind the scenes at LVH sportsbook

02.23.2012     06:49 AM     Printer Friendly
The Grantland Blog did a behind-the-scenes look at Las Vegas' LVH Sportsbook. Here are some of the highlights:

1. Nobody's bet on the Charlotte Bobcats. Nobody

2. A lot of people are betting on the Los Angeles Angels.

3. The book made a small profit on the Super Bowl, even though the combination of a Giants win with the under was its worst possible outcome.

4. Every sportsbook director in Vegas hated that safety.

5. The LVH can't win a coin-toss bet.

Las Vegas Hotel struggles during the post-Hilton era

02.17.2012     11:50 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article from the Las Vegas Sun on the former Hilton Hotel and Casino – now named the LVH (Las Vegas Hotel and Casino). Things aren’t looking too good these days both literally and figuratively.  The name change has also caused issues with its searchability on Google.

"The termination of the Hilton License Agreement, coupled with the fact that the property did not have the financial resources to purchase replacement exterior signage or to initiate a new brand advertising campaign to attract leisure travelers, has had a dramatic negative impact on hotel occupancy,'' his report said. ''Dramatically lower occupancy levels have, in turn, had a negative impact on other revenue departments (i.e. gaming, food and beverage and retail).''

Johnson also reported that the 2,950-room hotel-casino on Paradise Road needs $700,000 for exterior signage to replace the Hilton signs, Read more

Las Vegas' Heart Attack Grill lives up to its name

02.15.2012     02:33 PM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Back in November, we blogged about the opening of Las Vegas' Heart Attack Grill, which in a nut shell is a place people go to shorten their lives by a few days. Shocking that it took this long, but on Saturday, The HAG actually had a patron suffer a heart attack. Because the gentlemen reportedly survived the incident, feel free to let out a chuckle. But seriously, if you are going to eat there, make it a once a year event, and be sure to jog home afterwards. Actually, that may be a bad idea. Drive home, rest, let your blood pressure return to normal, and THEN go on a jog.

Las Vegas' South Point Casino does reality TV show on Travel Channel

02.08.2012     01:10 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Travel Channel will premier its new reality show, Vegas Stripped, tonight at 10 pm PT. The show will cover the inner-workings of Las Vegas' South Point Casino.

“It’s an inside look at what it takes to run a casino,” said Tom Mikovits, South Point director of marketing. “You’re going to see what happens in the butcher shop or on the loading dock, lots of stuff people don’t normally see.”

“We were comfortable being a locals’ casino, but having a brand like southpointpoker.com, that’s something we want to get out nationally,” he said. “It lets people know who we are and that we can play with the big players in Vegas, while still keeping that down home feeling.”

Super Bowl XLVI Gambling Recap: Sportsbooks hit hard by early safety

02.06.2012     07:06 AM     Printer Friendly
Las Vegas' MGM sportsbook started Super Bowl XLVI down $250K after Tom Brady's safety resulted in the first points on the game.

“Add that up and we started off a quarter-million in the hole,” said Jay Rood, sports book director of MGM Resorts International. “That wasn’t any good.”

Super Bowl XLVI Gambling: Public supports the Giants, big bets made on the Patriots

02.03.2012     07:48 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Las Vegas gears up for Super Bowl XLVI weekend. According to LVH oddsmaker Jay Kornegay, 62% of the tickets have come in on the New York Giants but the bigger bets have been on the New England Patriots.

“This creates so much traffic. It’s the biggest and most important week for Las Vegas in my eyes,” he said. “It’s about more than just the game anymore; it’s coming here to experience the whole weekend. From the Hoover Dam to the Strip, everybody benefits.”

“About 62 percent of our tickets are on the Giants so far. But the bigger plays have been on the Patriots,” Kornegay said. “This is the one event that the public, small money outweighs the sharp, big money.”

NFL Handicapping: 77-year-old Vegas man wins Station Casinos' Football Contest

02.02.2012     06:00 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article on Las Vegas resident Ernie Carey, who at 77 years old won this year's Station Casinos' NFL Contest. Carey finished 180-65, 73% straight up to claim the title. The grand prize was apparently a $225K house.

“In the first week, I had every team but the (New England) Patriots, who lost to the (Buffalo) Bills after being ahead at halftime,” Carey said. “That’s kind of the way the year went.”

“When we get that money, it will replenish my gambling fund,” Carey said. “My wife said she wants to buy new furniture, but I want to have a little extra to gamble.”

“I bet on the Patriots to win the Super Bowl at the beginning of the playoffs and I got 5-2 (odds). So if they win, I’ll get $183. Then, I put $90 on the Giants and am getting three points,” he said. “So, if they keep in close, I’ll win both sides.
