Sportsmemo's MLB Betting Preview: Texas Rangers

Texas Rangers
2015 W-L:
88-74
2015 O/U: 72-80-10
2015 Profits: +29.5 Units
2016 O/U Wins: 84
2016 AL West Odds: +250
Projected Starting Rotation: Cole Hamels, Derek Holland, Colby Lewis, Martin Perez, Nick Martinez, (Yu Darvish expected back in mid- to late-May)
Key Departures:  Yovani Gallardo, Mike Napoli, Leonys Martin
Key Additions: Tom Wilhemson

Handicapper's Take: "The Texas Rangers were the single best bet in MLB last year, returning just shy of +30 units of profit for their backers, ranked #1 in MLB profitability.  Texas won the AL West with 88 wins despite opening up the campaign with an 8-16 record in their first 24 games; going 80-58 from mid-May on.  But the betting markets didn’t (and don’t) respect the fact that Texas finished the campaign with only a +18 run differential, nearly 100 runs worse than the second place Astros, helps explain the tepid support for Texas in the betting markets this Read more

Seattle Mariners
2015 W-L:
76-86
2015 O/U: 79-76-7
2015 Profits: -20.5 Units
2016 O/U Wins: 82.5
2016 AL West Odds: +400
Projected Starting Rotation: Felix Hernandez, Hisashi Iwakuma, Wade Miley, Taijuan Walker, James Paxton
Key Departures: Brad Miller, Logan Morrison, Mark Trumbo, James Jones, Danny Fahquhar, Tom Wilhemson.
Key Additions: Wade Miley, Adam Lind, Leonys Martin, Steve Cishek, Joaquin Benoit, Chris Iannetta

Handicapper's Take: "New GM Jerry Dipoto engineered a significant offseason makeover for one of the most disappointing teams in baseball last year.  First year, first time manager Scott Servais is a former major leaguer, but his previous experience has all been in the front office, first in Texas as their Director of Player Development, then in LA as the Angels assistant GM.  Servais is Dipoto’s buddy, having worked under him in LA; a curious hire.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Who Has What It Takes to Win the Big Dance Part II

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In Part I of this article last week, I took a basic look at the profile of the past 16 NCAA champions.  From that profile, I was able to make a short list of potential champs in 2016, consisting of the following 16 teams:  Miami, North Carolina, Virginia, Kansas, Oklahoma, West Virginia, Villanova, Xavier, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan State, Purdue, Oregon, Utah, Arizona and Texas A&M.

The next step in the elimination process is to look at the team’s records away from home. The NCAA championship is not won on a team’s home floor.  Even with a favorable location one weekend, a team is still going to have to win four neutral site games in order to cut down the nets in Houston on April 4th.  And the best predictive evidence that I’ve seen for future success in neutral or hostile environments is previous success is neutral or hostile environments.

In most years, we’ll find a sub .500 road Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Phoenix Suns at Orlando Magic

Phoenix at Orlando -13.5 O/U 215.5
Recommendation: Orlando

Sometimes a write-up is better in graphic form.  I’m going to open this write-up with a chart, detailing the Phoenix Suns on the road since their last road win – at Chicago on December 3rd.

copy_suns.JPG

That’s not just a bad track record.  That’s an off-the-charts bad track record for a hopeless, injury riddled team that is now 3-30 SU in their last 33 games.  It’s surely worth noting that MOST of the losses listed above came without the opponent even taking the Suns seriously, often resting starters against this sorry squad.

When the Suns meet adversity on the highway, they’ve done one thing consistently for the last three months – they crumble like a house of cards.  With an interim, lame duck head coach in Earl Watson, it’s hard to picture a legitimate character change for the Suns in hostile environments down the stretch.

Scott Skiles Magic have notched double digit wins in each of their last two home games.  They’ve got a West Coast road trip just ahead, Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Pick: UConn Huskies at SMU Mustangs

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
UConn +4.5 at SMU O/U 132.5
Recommendation: UConn

Yes, it’s senior night at SMU, with the Mustang trio of Nic Moore and Markus Kennedy and Jordan Tolbert getting their last home game.  With SMU ineligible for postseason play, and a chance to win the regular season conference title on the line, it’s not hard to figure out why the Mustangs are laying points in this matchup.  But laying points against UConn has been a moneylosing strategy all year, and the Huskies are primed to bring their A-game tonight, just as they did when they knocked off SMU in Storrs last month.

UConn is coming off a very disappointing home loss to Houston over the weekend, putting them right back on the Big Dance Bubble – this is a HUGE game for the road underdog.  And boy, UConn is a tough team to lay points against; a squad that has only lost four games by more than five points all season.  the Huskies don’t panic when trailing late and they take the ball to the basket instead of jacking up desperation three’s; exactly what you want from your mid-sized underdogs.

Huskies coach Kevin Ollie was not amused by Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Who Has What It Takes to Win the Big Dance Part I

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
History shows us many things about what it takes to be a champion.  I write this article every year, and in every year except for two, I have been able to identify the eventual NCAA national champion among my elite level teams.   Both exceptions were the same team – UConn – making miracle runs to win the title as prohibitive longshots.

Two years ago, Kevin Ollie’s Huskies were on the ropes in their tourney opener against St Joe’s, needing a late rally just to send the game to overtime.  Three weeks later, they cut down the nets as national champs at Jerry’s World in Arlington.  I didn’t see it coming.  Neither did the betting markets, with UConn priced in the 100:1 longshot range prior to the tournament.  And if a longshot like that wins every coinflip game in the tourney this year, I’m not likely to get it right either.

I write this article every year before the regular season is over, before the conference tournaments, before the tourney seedings are announced and before a single March Madness game has been played.  Obviously, there is room for a lot to change between now and the Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Denver Nuggets at Dallas Mavericks

02.26.2016     10:31 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Denver +5 at Dallas O/U 209
Recommendation: Denver

Very quietly, waaaay underneath the national radar, the Dallas Mavericks have been falling apart for the better part of the last two months.  To call the Mavs poor home favorites is something of an understatement.  The results don’t lie.  Dallas has played 13 home games since the calendar turned to 2016.  They have led at the end of regulation in a grand total of three of those games.

The teams Dallas has been able to beat comfortably at home are not exactly elite.  They’ve beaten the 76ers, Nets and Suns – three of the four worst teams in the NBA (along with the Lakers, of course).  Twice Dallas has escaped with OT wins over non-playoff teams (Sacramento and Minnesota); more ‘lucky’ than ‘good’ even when stepping down in class.

In fact, the Mavs haven’t really been beating any competitive teams on any floor of late.  They are 4-10 SU in their last 14 games, with the wins coming against Philly, Brooklyn, the LA Lakers and Memphis without Marc Gasol in the lineup – not exactly an elite quartet. Read more
