MLB Handicapper Free Play: Baltimore Orioles at Tampa Bay Rays

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Baltimore (Norris) +110 at Tampa Bay (Ramos) O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Baltimore

The first place Baltimore Orioles have scored 77 runs in their last 13 road games, showing the offensive potency that this lineup was expected to have coming into the campaign.  That’s how Baltimore has won eight of those thirteen ballgames, cashing each and every one of those winning bets at an underdog price.

And there’s no reason to think that Tampa spot starter Cesar Ramos is going to be able to shut down the Orioles lineup today either.  Ramos has been bouncing between the bullpen and the rotation.  He issued six walks in just 4.2 innings against Boston last Thursday, then came out of the bullpen against the Yankees on Saturday; a classic ‘likely to struggle finding a rhythm’ type start tonight.  The Rays bullpen behind Ramos has been overworked and ineffective of late – the Rays starters have completed six full innings only twice in their Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Minnesota Twins at Cleveland Indians

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Minnesota (Deduno) +125 at Cleveland (Tomlin) O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Minnesota

There’s not much respect for Twins starter Samuel Deduno in the betting markets.  Deduno pitched a handful of gems as a part time starter in both 2012 and 2013, but he really tailed off after the All Star break last year. Following shoulder surgery in the offseason,  he opened the 2014 campaign in the bullpen, and got hit hard in his first start of the season against the powerful LA Dodgers lineup just last week.

But for as inconsistent as Deduno has been, he’s got a solid track record against the Indians (.192 batting average against and 31 strikeouts in 36 innings).  And with the extended slump this Cleveland lineup is in right now, even mediocre pitching is shutting this team down.
The Indians scored 12 runs last Friday against the White Sox, but have combined for a grand total of 18 runs while losing eight of their other nine games over the past ten Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: A look ahead to the NBA Conference Semifinals

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The first round of the NBA Playoffs is in the books; a near perfect storm for underdog bettors.  Dogs emerged victorious in three series: Portland over Houston, Washington over Chicago and Brooklyn over Toronto.  The underdog – Dallas in every game – went 6-1 ATS in the Spurs – Mavs series.  Other series losers like Atlanta, Memphis and Golden State proved to be feistier than expected.  Put it all together and we saw dogs go 32-15-3 ATS for the full 50 games played in the first round.

Should we expect Round 2 to follow the same path?  All four series certainly look competitive on paper, although top seeds Miami and San Antonio are both significant favorites to knock off Brooklyn and Portland respectively.  The series prices for Washington – Indiana and LA Clippers – Oklahoma City are certainly indicative of tight battles to come.  In this week’s Vegas Wiseguy Report I’ll examine all four of these second round series, looking for potential matchup edges that could offer ATS value as the series progress.

Indiana was lucky to survive their first round test against Atlanta.  The Hawks Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: New York Mets at Colorado Rockies

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
NY Mets (Colon) at Colorado (Nicasio) -125 O/U 9.5
Recommendation: Colorado

The Rockies suffered a deflating loss in Arizona last night, blowing a ninth inning lead with  two outs and two strikes, wasting a scoring chance in the tenth, then losing on a walk-off home run.  But bullpen meltdowns have not been a habitual problem for this team, and normal closer LaTroy Hawkins is now rested after notching back-to-back saves earlier in the series.

Forget the starting pitching matchup for a moment.  The disparity between these two lineups is worthy of a -200 price tag, if not higher.  Colorado leads the majors in runs scored, hits, doubles, home runs, total bases, batting average, slugging percentage and OPS.  Sox of their eight position players are hitting .300 or higher, including Troy Tulowitzki, Justin Morneau and Charlie Blackmun, all hitting above .350.  D-backs manager Kirk Gibson: “They are a good-hitting ball club. They are hard to Read more

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Atlanta (Harang) at Miami (Eovaldi) +100 O/U 7
Recommendation: Miami

Just about every advanced metric stat in existence tells us very clearly that Aaron Harang’s MLB leading ERA is just a mirage; a hurler primed to return to earth following an exceptional April.  Harang has held opponents to a .143 batting average and his .409 opponents OPS is the best in baseball.  He’s the first pitcher since Pedro Martinez back in 1997 to allow a single run or less while lasting six full innings or more in each of his first five starts.  And Aaron Harang is no Pedro Martinez!

The advanced metric stats show us how lucky Harang has been.  Opponents’ batting average on balls in play (BABIP) is just .200, an unsustainable number.  Harang has an 89% strand rate, another unsustainable number.  His xFIP of 3.77 is a looooong way off from his 0.85 ERA.  And he’s put up those stats despite the lowest ground ball rate of his career, in large part Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Underdogs have owned the NBA Playoffs

04.28.2014     08:14 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Seven of the eight first round NBA Playoff series have proven to be competitive – only the Miami Heat have a commanding 3-0 series lead in their series over the Charlotte Bobcats.   After an opening weekend that saw underdogs go 6-2 ATS, 5-3 SU, the prevailing trend of upsets continued throughout the last week.

The current numbers are quite striking.  Pointspread favorites are a woeful 7-21-2 ATS through the first 30 playoff games.  In fact the favored team is just 14-16 SU – underdog moneyline bettors have been feasting over the first nine days of playoff action.  Therefore, it’s no surprise that the lower seeded team has the series lead in the Spurs-Mavs, Wizards-Bulls and Blazers-Rockets series, with potentially live underdogs still in play for Grizzles-Thunder, Warriors-Clippers, Nets-Raptors, and Pacers-Hawks.

What gives?  Why have the dogs covered at a 75% clip through the first 30 Playoff games?   Let’s start with the simple premise that the top seeds are more vulnerable than the markets expected while the lower seeds have proven to be no pushovers.

The #1 seeds (Pacers and Spurs) Read more
