NCAA Basketball Gambling: PAC-12 ranks behind three mid-major conferences

01.12.2012     11:35 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article discussing how poor the PAC-12 has been thus far. According to Ken Pom, the PAC-12 is the 9th rated league behind the Missouri Valley, Atlantic-10, and Mountain West.

One NBA scout who demanded anonymity said of the Pac-12, "They ought to play all games at 5:45 because it is, in fact, the JV league."

"It's not that there's less players on the West Coast than before," another NBA scout said. "It's just that UCLA and the Pac-10 aren't hoarding them like they used to."

NC-Wilmington at Georgia State -12.5 O/U 132.5
It will be interesting to see how first-year head coach Ron Hunter’s Panthers handle this home game after going through a three-game CAA gauntlet. Tough struggles with fellow league kingpins Drexel, VCU and George Mason resulted in  2-1 SU and 3-0 ATS records but can GSU bring the same energy and focus tonight at home against fast paced NC-Wilmington? The Seahawks will be without starting forward Donte Morales who is averaging 22 minutes per game. Star forward Keith Rendelman (56.6 FG%, 15.2 ppg) picked up his second CAA Player of the Week award this past week.

Arkansas-Little Rock -2.5 at UL-Monroe O/U 118.5
Without their leading scorer, rebounder and three-point shooter, 6-10 Will Neighbour (Sun Belt POW Dec 25-31), the Trojans offense mustered just 91 points during his two-game absence. Granted those contests were versus SEC power Kentucky and defensive minded conference foe Florida Atlantic, but UALR shot 30% and 31% from the field. Neighbour is listed as Read more

NCAA Basketball Handicapping: Fouls and scoring on the downswing

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
I was researching teams and pace of play recently when I came across this article on the number of fouls being called in college basketball games this season and the impact on scoring.

According to statistics provided by the NCAA, there have been 18.35 fouls called per game per team this season. That is the lowest since 1963, when the average was 18.20. Not surprisingly, this has had an effect on scoring. Overall team scoring average is 68.88 ppg, and that number may well drop as conference play continues.  It appears the refs are clamping down on physical play, making it a bit it's easier for players to dribble, pass and shoot.
Yet according to my research of O/U results on over 1,500 college basketball games this season, the OVER is winning just 49.1% of the time, which is right at the average the past four seasons (note: results may vary due to totals market moves). As teams play more conference games against familiar opponents and coaching staffs, the games tend to have less scoring overall with stronger defensive intensity. You still Read more

College Basketball Gambling: Wisconsin looks to snap three-game losing streak

Wisconsin at Purdue -2.5 O/U 112.5

Fantastic article about Wisconsin's struggles of late. The Badgers (1-3 Big Ten) recently lost back-to-back games at the Kohl Center and while the team's three-point shooting has been strong (37.3%), when the outside shot isn't falling, points have been very hard to come by.

Shot attempts in Ryan’s system are a de facto zero-sum game, so if one type of shot isn’t working, they should ideally shift some of those attempts inside. Instead, they’ve been shooting more from long range: almost 25% of their total three-point attempts on the year have come in the last three games.

NCAA Basketball Betting: Arizona State tries to move on after dismissal of PG

Oregon at Arizona State pk O/U 132

The dismissal of starting point guard and leading scorer Keala King marked the eighth Arizona State player to leave the program since 2009. Head coach Herb Sendek suspended King, Kyle Cain and Chris Colvin last week. Cain and Colvin have been reinstated. Sendek claims the attitude of the team is great – that was King's issue. Trent Lockett has moved over to the point guard spot – playing the position for the first time in his career.

"The effort was terrific and I just thought the guys came together in a special way," he said. "If any of you guys could've been with us in the locker room or at our team meals, if you could've shared the bus rides with us, you would've felt good about college sports. Even Saturday, when we didn't win, if you would've been Read more

NCAA Basketball Free Pick: Dayton Flyers at St. Bonaventure Bonnies

Dayton at St. Bonaventure -3.5 O/U 129.5
Recommendation: St. Bonaventure

Dayton has gotten off to a tremendous start in Atlantic-10 play, knocking off heavyweights Saint Louis and Temple in its first two conference games.  But the injury bug has bitten the Flyers hard, leaving them extremely short handed for their trip to St Bonnie's tonight. Last week, Dayton lost big man Josh Benson for the season with a knee injury.  Benson was second on the team in scoring, third in rebounding and the only legitimate shot-blocker on the roster. Now they've lost Chris Johnson to a concussion in practice on Monday, another key low post contributor: third on the team in scoring and second in rebounding. A third key low post contributor, Luke Fabrizius, suffered a fractured nose at Temple over the weekend, and will have to play with a mask for the first time in his career tonight.  That leaves the Flyers with only eight healthy scholarship players in their Read more

NCAA Basketball Betting Update: Pitt open to the idea of playing zone defense

01.11.2012     10:40 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Rutgers at Pittsburgh -8.5 O/U 133.5

Can't stop anyone? Why not play a zone? That's always a good sign when for the last decade your entire program has been predicated on tough man-to-man defense.

"If a zone is going to work, I think we should definitely try it," sophomore forward Lamar Patterson said. "If it works, stick with it. Whatever it takes to get a 'W' right now."

"We've worked on it and tried different things," he said. "Our zone hasn't been very good in the games we've used it. It's something we work on every day. It's something we want to play. We have to get more out of it than we're getting."

College Basketball Free Play: Kentucky Wildcats at Auburn Tigers

Kentucky at Auburn +18 O/U 135.5
Recommendation: Auburn

Even though Kentucky is a completely different team from a year ago, the make-up of the team is very similar – a load of talent and not a lot of experience. Going on the road with freshmen can be difficult on any team and Kentucky is no exception. Last season, the Wildcats went 2-6 SU on the highway in SEC play – a group that was two points from playing for the National Championship. Despite back-to-back horrendous road showings (29-point loss to Florida State and 30-point loss to Vanderbilt), I trust that Auburn is going to play much better at home against an opponent that won't be difficult to get up for. The Tigers weren't very good last season yet in SEC play, their home losses were by margins of 7, 5, 10, 13, 17 and 2. Over the past week we've seen both Georgia Tech (vs. Duke) and Illinois (vs. Ohio State) perform better than they have all season – at home vs. a top rated opponent. With Read more
