College Basketball Gambling: UMass installs zone defense to avoid fatigue

01.11.2012     07:15 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
-Charlotte- at Massachusetts -4.5 O/U 144

UMass has started to play more zone defense in order to keep players out of foul trouble and avoid sending opposing teams to the free throw line. The zone also helps the Minutemen with fatigue. Tonight's opponent Charlotte may be a good candidate for it as the 49ers have really struggled to shoot from the perimeter (30.8% 3-point).

"I think it helped keep some of our players in the game longer (Sunday),'' said Kellogg, whose team nonetheless lost three players to fouls.

"It's mostly a matter of making sure the players make the right rotations and wind up where they should be,'' he said.

NCAA Basketball Betting: Off big win, Michigan an -8 favorite over Northwestern

Northwestern at Michigan -8 O/U 133.5

Two "systems" at work tonight in the Big Ten with Michigan playing host to Northwestern. Both teams run unique offensive sets while playing 1-3-1 zone and man-to-man defenses. On Sunday, Michigan dominated Wisconsin start to finish, 59-41. Northwestern has a week off after losing to Illinois by one at home. The Wildcats have won three of the last four meetings – Michigan was just a 2-point home favorite last year (won 75-66).

“It’s hard to emulate the speed and just the precision of (the Princeton offense),” said senior guard Stu Douglass. “It’s hard enough for us to guard it, let alone the scout team picking it up in one or two days. … We’ve done a pretty good job with the short time we’ve had. I’m not too Read more

College Basketball Betting: Pittsburgh defense has been historically bad

Rutgers at Pittsburgh -8.5 O/U 133.5

Article on how poor Pittsburgh's defense has been compared to previous editions under Jamie Dixon. Under Dixon, the Panthers went eight years allowing between 0.84-0.93 points per possession (see chart below). This year, they are currently giving up 1.01 ppp (194th nationally).

"We don't guard the dribble real well," Dixon said afterward when asked to pinpoint his team's defensive deficiencies. "We don't keep it in front. Some of our turnovers lead to layups, which gives them a higher field-goal percentage. We just don't seem to guard the penetration well. There are some other things, but that's the main thing."

Fairway Jay is having another winning and profitable college basketball season highlighted by his top-rated Big Drive plays. With a unit rating of 1, 1.5 and 2.0, Fairway Jay’s Big Drives are his 15* and 20* selections.  His top-rated 20* CBB plays are 11-3 this season including 10-1 since December 1, 2011.  All Big Drive CBB selections are 20-4 since December 1 and hitting nearly 70% this season.

Big East play in action tonight with Seton Hall (-12) playing host to DePaul. The Pirates (14-2, 3-1 Big East) are a perfect 9-0 at home with an average margin of victory of nearly 14 points. Seton Hall cracked the AP top-25 poll on January 10th for the first time since 2001. DePaul (10-5, 1-2) is still rebuilding but are much improved after just seven wins last season. Still, the Blue Demons have not won more than ONE Big East conference game since 2007-08 and are 4-57 vs. conference opponents since the start of the 2008 season; including tournament games.

Both teams are making their betting backers money, as Seton Hall is 9-3 ATS and DePaul Read more

College Basketball Betting: Florida looks to bounce back after poor effort

Georgia at Florida -16 O/U 138.5

Following Saturday's 67-56 loss at Tennessee, Florida head coach Billy Donovan went the route of two-a-days in order to get his team's attention. The Gators sports the No. 1 offensive efficiency in the country (1.21 points per possession) but were held to 0.86 ppp against the Vols. Georgia put together a five-game winning streak after opening the year 4-5. The Bulldogs though were pounded by Alabama, 74-59, in Athens last weekend.

“He [Donovan] let us know it was going to be a tough day,” Florida junior forward Erik Murphy said.

“It was real intense. We just basically played defense and rebounded the whole time. We had the bubbles up on the hoops, so we had to rebound. No shots were going in.”

NCAA Basketball Gambling: Oklahoma State plays host to Oklahoma State

Oklahoma at Oklahoma State -2.5 O/U 131

It would be a real good game plan for Oklahoma head coach Lon Krueger and his Sooners to press a tired (very quick turnaround), beat up (starting guards operating with injuries) and depth-shy Oklahoma State squad tonight.

Back to that quick turnaround — the Cowboys are playing short-handed with a rotation of eight players. And they're limping into Bedlam, with Page and Markel Brown both slowed by bad wheels. And Page and Brown are the only Cowboys who have played in a Bedlam game.

“We always need a little rest with this basketball team,” said OSU coach Travis Ford. “But no excuses.”

College Basketball Betting: UConn lacks leadership, struggles to find identity

West Virginia at Connecticut -4.5 O/U 138.5

The return of Jim Calhoun didn't seem to help as UConn dropped its second straight game with a 67-60 loss at Rutgers on Saturday. Calhoun noted that while last year’s team struggled at times, it wasn't because of a lack of effort. This year's squad seems to have a little "championship hangover" and a lack of leadership.

"We struggled at times last year," coach Jim Calhoun said Saturday night after the Huskies' most discouraging loss yet, 67-60 to Rutgers at the Louis Brown Athletic Center. "But we never struggled like this. This is a different kind of struggle. We're struggling to give our best effort."

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Maryland Terrapins at NC State Wolfpack

Maryland +11 at NC State O/U 148.5
Recommendation: Maryland

I think when it is all said and done, the final season results of both Maryland and NC State won't be too dissimilar. The Wolfpack probably have a bit more talent but with the Terps adding a few pieces over the last few weeks, the difference isn't 11 points. Another part of my intrigue towards the underdog is that NC State cannot be trusted in the price range against comparable competition. I've watched this team multiple times this season and during the regular flow of the game, they look extremely good. But it all goes haywire when possessions start to mean something or they need a defensive stop. Maryland PG Pe'Shone Howard (broken foot) and center Alex Lin (eligibility) should be fairly settled in the rotation having played four and three games respectively. As a result, the Terps now have eight players who have averaged over 20 minutes per game of playing time. I don't think the betting markets Read more
