College Basketball Betting: UConn's Calhoun returns, wants to see better defense

01.06.2012     11:49 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
UConn head coach Jim Calhoun returns to the sidelines on Saturday after a three-game suspension. The Huskies went 2-1 in his absence though Calhoun was none too pleased with his team's defensive effort in a 75-63 loss to Seton Hall. That could spell trouble for Rutgers who has struggled to score against quality competition all season.

"I was really surprised that we're just getting looser on defense," he said according to TheDay.com. "… We just played very poorly offensively. We're proving once again that we have some work to do. … We needed leadership out of the backcourt and we didn't get it. We needed some of the veterans, Alex (Oriakhi) and Roscoe (Smith) and Shabazz (Napier) to step up and that didn't happen. So that's disappointing."

Bettors treated to the old 6-on-5 during UL-Lafayette-Western Kentucky game

01.06.2012     05:54 AM     Printer Friendly
From watching the video, it didn't really matter, but how do you not notice six players on the floor if you are a ref/coach/player/fan/announcer/ball boy? In football, it always feels like there are two small armies running around but if a 12th man even thinks about stepping in the field, yellow flags are flying. Anyway, people started catching on after the the game was called final. And of course the 72-70 final (in OT) was right around the closing betting line. According to CRIS, ULL opened -2.5, was bet up to -3 but money came in on WKU and the line dropped to a pick 'em. Lafayette eventually closed as a 1.5-point favorite.

College Basketball Free Pick: Montana State Bobcats at Idaho State Bengals

Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Montana State at Idaho State -1.5 O/U 137
Recommendation: Under

The only way Idaho State is going to have success in the Big Sky this season is to shorten the game and play defense. The Bengals simply don't have the horses to trade scores on a nightly basis. Last time out, they went on the road and picked up a rare victory – a 57-55 win at Northern Colorado. The game featured only 53 possessions (and UNC likes to run typically). Montana State is off a rare performance as well as it hung 86 on Portland State. It was really the perfect storm for the Bobcats – weak opponent that doesn't play defense and likes to run. On the road, I don't think we'll see that type of outcome. The total in this series has never been higher that 135 (2-10 O/U) and in Pocatello, the game scores were 95, 133, 107, 113, and 125. Play it under.

NCAA Basketball Gambling: Pittsburgh tries to toughen up after three straight losses

Pittsburgh -4.5 at -DePaul- O/U 145

The Pitt Panthers are sure saying all of the right things following three straight losses, including two at the once impenetrable Petersen Events Center. Practices this week have reportedly been extra physical leading up to tonight's game at DePaul.

"It's definitely a must-win," Robinson said. "We are going to go out there hungry and try to get this thing back on track."

"A couple guys' mouths got bloody," he said. "I think we needed that. It's going to help us."

"We don't take (the physical play) personally," he said. "We know we are just trying to get each other better. One guy might not like it. But that's who we are going to sacrifice to get better."

College Basketball Betting: Arizona's guard-heavy lineup a chore for UCLA

Arizona at UCLA -1.5 O/U 129.5

UCLA returns home for PAC-12 action after going 0-2 in its trip to the Bay Area. The Bruins face the difficult task of trying to contain Arizona's perimeter oriented lineup. The Wildcats' tallest starter is 6-7 whereas UCLA has a host of players who don't sport much lateral quickness.

"Arizona is a very hard team for us to match up with," Howland said. "Basically we're playing against five guards."

College Basketball Free Pick: UTEP Miners at Marshall Thundering Herd

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
UTEP +12 at Marshall O/U 130
Recommendation: UTEP

Marshall is expected to contend for a Conference-USA championship and that in my opinion has them a little overvalued entering league play. The Thundering Herd are a talented and experienced team and we cashed with them earlier this season in their 62-56 loss at Syracuse (+15.5). A road win at Cincinnati and home win over Belmont shows some of the strength and potential of this Marshall squad. But UTEP (8-2 ATS) is improving and playing better after a 1-4 start with outright underdog wins on a neutral court against Clemson and Auburn and a competitive contest against top-25 Kansas State. Road losses at UNLV and Oregon were also competitive covers despite being 17-point underdogs. Senior forward Gabriel McCalley is an anchor inside and young forwards Bohannon and Lang are rapidly improving while leading the team in rebounding and hitting 52% and 69% of their shots respectively. Transfer point man Jacques Streeter Read more

College Basketball Betting: Gates returns for Cincinnatii following suspension

01.04.2012     07:52 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Notre Dame at Cincinnati -7.5 O/U 131

Cincinnati welcomes back power forward Yancy Gates and center Cheikh Mbodj from suspension tonight against Notre Dame. The Bearcats have reeled off six straight wins after the infamous Xavier brawl. With Gates out, the team changed its style, favoring more of an up-tempo game. They also weren't shy about firing away from deep with 173 three-point attempts (28.8 per game, 37%). Prior to that, Cinci averaged 14.1 attempts per game. With Gates back (13.1 FG attempts per game) there is the potential it could mess up the rhythm of the team's offense – which isn’t particularly efficient to begin with.

"It makes everything a little bit easier," said sophomore guard Sean Kilpatrick, who was named the Big East's player of the week on Monday. "We know a lot of (defenses') attention will be brought to the middle, and Read more
