Found this one from the archives. Dating back to the 2004-05 season, UConn is 1-6 SU and 2-5 ATS in its Big East openers (see below). Jim Calhoun noted prior to last year's opener against Pitt (Panthers won 78-63) that he didn't like having to play conference games prior to the New Year. Note that Calhoun will begin his
three-game suspension

I realize that Seton Hall's 11-1 start was aided by more than a handful of creampuff opponents. I'm also aware that the Pirates won in the Carrier Dome last season by 32 as 12.5-point underdogs. But those factors don't outweigh that we have a capable underdog catching +15.5 in a conference game. Syracuse has the look of an elite team but in five games against decent competition, the Orange weren’t exactly posting 20-point wins left and right. They beat Virginia Tech and Stanford by 11 and six respectively at Madison Square Garden and slipped past Florida by four. Marshall went to the Carrier Dome and lost by six and NC State jumped out to a big lead before the Orange went on a crazy 23-0 run in the first half. After an 0-6 start, Western Michigan has managed to turn the page with three straight wins including a 14-point victory over Duquesne. Unfortunately for the Broncos, a rash of injuries have left the team
short on depth
as they travel to face up-tempo Oakland tonight.
"I looked back behind the bench at one point and I see (former players) Ben Reed and Brian Snider back there, I thought about, 'Hey, you guys ready? I wonder if we can hide you and get you into a uniform.'
"We've got to figure out a way. ... This is as bad as I can remember feeling after a win.
"And then Brandon Pokley comes in ... and then he goes down. You talk about two kids that have just worked their tails off to get themselves to a point in time when they can really contend for playing time and be a Division I college basketball player and then it gets taken away from them, at least temporarily."

Few teams if any have improved more over the last few weeks than UTEP. It all started after the Miners lost to Stephen F. Austin at home 53-35. Tim Floyd decided with a host of inexperience and youth that the best thing to do was to shorten the game and play at a slow pace in order to just stick around. The move paid off as the Miners went to Oregon and lost by six and then beat New Mexico State after losing to the Aggies by 16 a month earlier. They then hung at UNLV in an 11-point loss and last night dominated Clemson 61-48. Kansas State has done nothing wrong this season with wins over Virginia Tech and Alabama and a double-OT loss to West Virginia. But in a neutral site setting, where laying this type of price can be extremely dangerous, I see no reason that UTEP can't grind its way to another spread cover.

, Anthony Drmic, is currently questionable for tonight's game against Iowa. Drmic sprained his ankle in Monday's win over Fresno State. He's the only player on the team that averages double-digits. BSU also lost Igor Hadziomerovic (40% 3pt, 7.1 ppg) last week to a broken foot. In three road games this season, Boise lost by 10 at Long Beach, 19 at LSU and 17 at Denver. Iowa unfortunately has a 16-point home loss to Campbell on its resume but did defeat in-state rival Drake by 14 last week.
Drmic’s injury comes a few days after fellow Australian Igor Hadziomerovic was lost for the season with a broken foot sustained in practice.
“The tough thing about losing Iggy is he’s one of those guys who makes everyone around him better,” Rice said.
