MLB Handicapping: Chicago's Samardzija showing signs of wearing down

06.25.2012     07:57 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
We'll be keeping a close eye of Chicago's Jeff Samardzija over the next few weeks. His last four outings have lasted only 5, 3.2, 5.1 and 5 innings respectively. During that span, his ERA was 8.53 – though perhaps a tad unlucky with a .410 BABIP. Chicago claims everything is fine but with little to play for, the Cubs can ill-afford to damage one of their few prized possessions. Samardzija is slated to start Wednesday vs. New York.

‘‘One thing that we’ve done with Jeff more so than anybody — and maybe it’s something we also have to look at — is he’s not been able to stay on that five-day rotation because we’re trying to watch pitches,’’ Bosio said. ‘‘And maybe that is a disservice to him. There’s a lot to be said for staying on a regular routine. But when you’re talking about a special talent like Jeff, it’s hard to have it both ways. Do I see a pattern? No. I see a guy, along with the rest of the guys on the Read more

MLB Gambling Free Play: Atlanta Braves at Boston Red Sox

06.24.2012     07:37 AM     ER Sports     Printer Friendly
Submitted by ER Sports blog entry.
Atlanta (Minor) at Boston (Cook) -110 O/U 10.5
Recommendation: Boston

The Braves and Red Sox play the rubber match of a three-game set in Fenway Park Sunday afternoon. Atlanta sends southpaw Mike Minor to the hill and he’s found trouble at just about every turn this season, while showing a 6.04 ERA. The road has been tough sledding for Minor with a 6.55 ERA and 12 home runs allowed. The long ball figures to provide the left-hander with issues once again today. Pitching in Fenway against a patient and deep Red Sox lineup is simply too much for Minor to overcome with confidence a real issue. Meanwhile, Aaron Cook is expected to climb the bump for the Red Sox. Cook is looking forward to this opportunity after a dismal start for the Sox back on May 5. No question the groundballing Cook has toiled at the major league level going back to last season. However, he recently Read more

MLB Handicapping: White Sox send Humber to DL, recall Axelrod

06.23.2012     07:17 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Milwaukee (Wolf) at Chicago WS (Axelrod) -125 O/U 9.5

Add Chicago's Philip Humber to our list of starting pitchers on the DL. The way he was throwing of late, it may not be that big of a loss. In his place, at least for today, will be Dylan Axelrod. Axelrod made one spot start back in early May (4.1 IP, 2 ER at Detroit) and since then has been pitching in Triple-A (3.18 ERA, 68 IP, 66 Ks).

MLB Betting News: Carlos Zambrano out of whack according to Guillen

06.21.2012     07:24 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Miami (Zambrano) at Boston (Matusaka) -135 O/U 10.5

For as long as we can remember, there has been Good Carlos Zambrano and Bad Carlos Zambrano. Good Carlos had a 1.86 ERA in mid-June. Bad Carlos got smacked around for 11 earned runs in back-to-back starts. Based on Miami manager Ozzie Guillen's recent quote, bettors would be wise to expect some more Bad Carlos tonight in Boston.

"Carlos right now is a little out of whack," Guillen said. "He's flying out. His mechanics are very bad. His sinker is moving away too long. You cannot get behind people (in the count) all the time. With you and pitching, it's not about how hard you throw. It's about location and what you want to do on the pitching mound."

Vegas bettors show interest in Euro 2012

06.20.2012     12:13 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
According to various Las Vegas oddsmakers, Euro 2012 has been a popular choice for local bettors. The tournament is down to eight teams with Spain and Germany the co-betting favorites at 2-to-1.

“It’s a good time of year for it because there’s not much going on during the day,” said Jeff Sherman, assistant race and sports director who oversees soccer at the LVH Superbook. “It’s the second largest tournament we’ll book. It’s behind the World Cup, and it’s not close to the World Cup when it comes to handle.”

“Germany’s playing a little bit better than Spain and getting supported more at the betting window, too,” Sherman said. “Germany has been by far the most popular bet team on an individual game basis.”

Companies position themselves by creating free online poker websites

06.20.2012     11:23 AM     Printer Friendly
The owners behind Station Casinos are launching a free online gambling website later this week. Ultimate Poker will be available on Facebook as a free social game – eventually offering cash games once they become legal.

“We are trying to provide an authentic experience for people who care about the game,” Derossi said. “As we move from the social side of gaming to a real money space, we will have serious players.”

“We’re also going to utilize Station Casinos’ customer relationship model, which is very important in any online enterprise,” Prior said. “You need people to return to your product.”

“We view this as a global opportunity,” Breitling said. “When looking at online gaming, it’s going to be a domino effect with Nevada leading the way.”

MLB Handicapping: Oswalt nears return with Texas thin on arms

06.18.2012     01:14 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Bettors should expect to see Texas' Roy Oswalt toe the rubber soon. The Rangers have yet to announce a specific date but with the current state of the rotation (Feliz, Holland and Ogando all on the DL) it likely won't be long. Oswalt has made four minor league starts including a 100-pitch outing for Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday.

MLB Betting News: Matt Cain's pitch counts up over last three starts

06.18.2012     10:54 AM     Printer Friendly
San Francisco's Matt Cain makes his first start (at LA Angels) following last week's perfect game against Houston. Cain threw a season-high 125 pitches and has now racked of 358 pitches over his last three outings. Cain has shown little decline following high-pitch count games throughout his career.

"It's in your mind, obviously," Cain said Sunday. "But I'm not going to think about that. It's a hard thing to duplicate. ... Same as normal. We don't get in the 120s that often, but we do it once in a while."

MLB Betting News: Baltimore's Arrieta more confident after second chance

06.18.2012     07:43 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Baltimore (Arrieta) at NY Mets (Dickey) -160 O/U 7

As a result of Brian Matusz' freak accident while bunting, Baltimore's Jake Arrieta was given a second chance in the starting rotation and cashed in by having his best outing of the season (7 IP, 1 ER, 9 Ks vs. Pittsburgh). The confidence-boosting effort earned him the nod for tonight's game against the Mets.

"That's something that I've talked to Hammel a great deal about and one of the things that really helped him turn the corner," Arrieta said. "Instead of picking up the target and the hitter as one big area, he's started to refine his sights to even a small spot on the glove and even take the hitter completely out of the equation.

"In the past, I've placed too much emphasis and focus on the hitter. And by doing that, when your vision Read more

Donaghy cashes in on $1.3 million civil suit

06.18.2012     06:30 AM     Printer Friendly

Holy cow. Tim Donaghy wasn't lying when he called out his book publisher for stiffing him on some profits. Now he can go back to picking – but not betting on! – winners.

"The lady made my life a living hell and basically tortured me through the press by putting fictitious stories out there," Donaghy said Sunday. "I knew, at some point, my time would come. And my time was Friday."

"I watch a lot of these games and advise him," Donaghy said. "If the lines are way out of whack, I'll have a conversation with him."
