College Basketball Handicapping: Last home games update

02.27.2012     09:00 AM         Printer Friendly
Submitted by blog entry.
Last week I provided a blog and reviewed information and situations surrounding teams playing their last home games. After adding in the Ivy League results, home teams with a winning record playing with same season revenge went a modest 7-7 ATS with a few close losses.

For the final week of the regular season, I’ve outlined this week’s teams playing their last home game with the additional parameters of winning home teams and same season revenge. These are games through Friday, March 2nd, and I’ll update the final weekend of last home games later this week.

Following a rough four-day stretch last week in our college basketball pointspread prognosis, we bounced back with a 6-2 weekend of winners highlighted by two Big Drive side play winners and capped by a pair of PAC-12 outright underdog winners on Sunday with Colorado and Oregon.  We’re now 5-0 our last five CBB underdog plays.

As you handicap and follow the last week of the regular season, perhaps Read more

Generous marine takes home $2.8 million from Las Vegas slot machine

02.27.2012     07:40 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
A marine who was stationed at Las Vegas' Nellis Air Force Base decided to kill a few hours at the Bellagio on Sunday and walked away with $2.8 million on a penny slot. Three days earlier, he was accepted as a bone marrow donor. Reports indicate that bone marrow donations having skyrocketed 350% nationwide following news of the win. He will receive roughly $100K a year for the next 20 years.

“They asked me if I was sure I wanted to go through with it, because it’s kind of painful, but what’s a little pain if it will save someone’s life?” the U.S. Marine said Friday. “I look at this as kind of good karma for that.”

“Dude, what just happened?” Degenhardt remembers asking his friend.

“You just won,” the buddy told him.

“Cool,” Degenhardt said.

Mike Tyson hosts stand-up show at MGM Grand Theater

02.27.2012     07:23 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
The Las Vegas Strip is about to get a new act in the form of Mike Tyson. Iron Mike is starring in his own one-man show, Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth - Live on Stage, starting in April at the MGM Grand's Hollywood Theater.

“The cops pulled me over one day. I was on coke; I was all drunk and high on cocaine, and I told the cops I was lost and couldn’t find my way around, and the cops drove me to the party,” he says. “Are you crazy? It was just before I went clean and sober. The cop who pulled me over, he says, ‘You were great in “Hangover,” ' and he drove me to the dope house, to a party.”

This isn’t to say all of those subjects will be broached every night. The show’s format is still in its infancy (Tyson doesn’t even start rehearsing until March 5). He might sing, as a pianist and a vocalist might well be in the final version of the show. He might take questions from the audience, too, opening up delicious possibilities of the boxing icon facing Read more

College Basketball Free Pick: North Texas Mean Green at Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans

North Texas at Arkansas-Little Rock -3 O/U 131.5
Recommendation: Arkansas-Little Rock

If a bettor had the foresight to back these two teams all year, he would be smiling all the way to the bank. North Texas has gone 15-5-1 ATS and just had an 11-0-1 pointspread streak snapped with a home loss to Louisiana-Lafayette. UALR has been even better, going 18-6 ATS for the season. The Trojans have been the biggest surprise of the Sun Belt with their 11-3 conference record that includes a win at North Texas in late December. They lead the West Division and can clinch it outright with a win tonight. Little Rock is playing at full strength again after freshman forward Will Neighbour was injured back in late December. He returned two weeks later, but went from playing 30 minutes a game to less than 20 in his first seven games back. He has averaged 30 minutes over the last four games – all wins – and chipped in 16 ppg. Look for the home side to complete the season sweep of the Mean Green tonight.

NBA Handicapping: Los Angeles Lakers hold players-only meeting

02.21.2012     01:35 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Following yesterday's 103-92 win over Portland, the Los Angeles Lakers reportedly had a players-only meeting to discuss the focus for the remainder of the season. With today off, the team preps for back-to-back road games against Dallas and Oklahoma City to close out the  first half.

Some players are upset about what they perceive to be an ever-changing rotation and the up-and-down distribution of minutes, sources said. Others aren't liking the long practices and shootarounds, while still others have bristled at Brown's heavy-handed approach, as opposed to Jackson's more laid-back style.

The players were not happy that after beating Phoenix at home Friday night and flying to Phoenix Saturday afternoon, they had to get up for a 10 a.m. shootaround Sunday morning. With Sunday's game starting at 6 p.m., it would've been more typical to skip the morning shootaround in exchange for a pregame walk-through. One player said the Lakers' body language and attitude at the shootaround was poor and that Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Cashing in on a Three Dog Night

02.20.2012     01:22 PM         Printer Friendly
Submitted by blog entry.
This past weekend was a Three Dog Night as we cashed three underdog winners on Sunday as part of a 3-0 day in CBB/NBA. Saturday we cashed four college basketball underdog winners and back on February 9, we also cashed three underdog CBB winners. Some of these plays are part of our late season situationals including revenge plays such as Oregon’s whipping of Washington 82-57 as a home underdog. As mentioned in this blog, we also have many last home game (LHG) situations upcoming the final two weeks, and we’ll try to continue our solid run through February and top play success; now 46-23 on our top-rated Big Drive plays in college basketball the past 80 days.

The opportunities ahead are tremendous in college basketball. We conclude the regular season over the next two weeks, and college conference tournaments (CCT’s) begin this month for smaller conferences followed by the postseason tournaments and the big dance, NCAA Tournament. This Read more

NBA Betting Alert: Chicago's Derrick Rose may play vs. Atlanta

02.20.2012     11:14 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Atlanta at Chicago -10.5 O/U 181

The Chicago Sun-Times is reporting Derrick Rose participated in full contact practice yesterday and could play tonight against Atlanta.

“He defended pick-and-rolls, he went one-on-one, he defended the post, played in the post, defended catch-and-shoot,” Thibodeau said. “He did a lot. We’ll see how he is [Monday]. It was the next step for us.”

“Our spacing is breaking down; we’re quick shooting the ball; we don’t have floor balance, which doesn’t allow us to get our defense set, so we’re giving up easy baskets,” he said. “We’re not making the effort that’s necessary with our smalls being back on the raise of the shot and our bigs sprinting back to get our smalls back out. In this league, if you take short cuts, Read more

NBA Handicapping: Against the Spread impact players

02.20.2012     07:49 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers blog entry.
Last week, I wrote about the pointspread impact of the numerous key injuries around the NBA. This week, I’m going to shift my focus to specific players, in an effort to identify and isolate the influence of individuals on their respective teams’ ATS results.

Spencer Hawes, Philadelphia
Hawes was considered a first round bust in Sacramento, failing to develop into an impact player after the Kings took him with the 10th overall pick back in 2007. Last year, in a backup role with the Sixers, Hawes was certainly not an impact player on either end of the court. But as a starter this year, the Sixers rode his solid defense and rebounding a lot early in the season: 13-1 ATS with him in the lineup. But Hawes has been battling a lingering Achilles injury, and the Sixers just aren’t the same team without him: 6-12 ATS in the 18 games that he’s missed. At 13-1 against the spread with him and 6-12 without him, Hawes is exactly the type of under-the-radar pointspread influencer that I’m looking to spotlight!

Wynn Casino severs ties with Japanese shareholder

02.20.2012     07:10 AM     Printer Friendly
Las Vegas' Wynn Casino just cut ties with its biggest shareholder, Japanese billionaire Kazuo Okada. Okada reportedly made improper payments to foreign gaming regulators which prompted Wynn to buy out his shares worth an estimated $1.9 billion.

"Freeh’s investigators uncovered and documented more than three dozen instances over a three-year period in which Mr. Okada and his associates engaged in improper activities for their own benefit in apparent violation of U.S. anti-corruption laws and gross disregard for the company’s Code of Conduct. These troubling discoveries include cash payments and gifts totaling approximately $110,000 to foreign gaming regulators,” Wynn’s statement on Sunday said.
