Offshore sportsbook operator ordered to pay $7.7 million

06.13.2012     02:15 PM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

The brother-in-law of a US Congressman was ordered to pay $7.7 million for his role in an illegal offshore sportsbook that conducted business in several states. In case you were wondering, the sportsbook's name was Sports Offshore ("was" meaning it went to domain heaven). Amazing it didn’t stick around longer with such a catchy name.

Oddsmakers not expecting much from the UNLV football program in 2012

06.12.2012     12:47 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Is it too early to start talking UNLV football? Of course not. Bobby Hauck begins his third season after back-to-back 2-win efforts. The Golden Nugget lined three of UNLV's games: Washington State -17.5 at UNLV; Nevada -17 at UNLV; and UNLV at Boise State -35.5. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that 2012 is going to be a tough one. The Rebels return 13 starters (8 off, 5 def). We went back to 2000 and couldn't find a season in which the Rebels had a winning record against the spread.

MLB Gambling Free Play: Oakland A's at Colorado Rockies

Oakland (Colon) +105 at Colorado (Guthrie) O/U 10.5
Recommendation: Oakland

Colorado (24-35) is just 15-18 at Coors Field this season and winless in its last seven Interleague home games. They once dominated these Interleague games on their home turf in the light air going 45-19. But tough times have hit the Rockies as they have lost five straight games and boast MLB’s worst pitching with a 5.31 ERA and .297 batting average against (BAA).

I don’t back favorites with very poor pitching while they struggle to score and win. The Rockies continue to play without star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, and despite 8 runs scored Sunday, they scored just 2, 1, 0, 4, 3 and 2 runs in six of their previous seven games. Rockies starter Jeremy Guthrie is downright awful this season with poor skill sets and stats. He’s been very hittable with a .324 BAA and 69 hits allowed in 51 innings. He’s also allowed 12 home runs with just 23 strikeouts. Oh, and his ERA is 6.35 including Read more

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Nevada Gaming Control Board gave the initial go-ahead on William Hill's purchase of three local sportsbooks worth $55 million. Hill will take over American Wagering, Brandywine and Cal Neva. None of the locations are expected to close but rather see $3 million in upgrades prior to the upcoming football season.

Handicapper Teddy Covers' Wiseguy Report 6-4-2012

06.04.2012     11:27 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
I decided to give my weekly column a new name last week, calling it Teddy’s Wiseguy Report.  I did this because I’ve been getting a boatload of questions about wiseguy bettors – the individuals and syndicates that legitimately do battle with the books with a steady diet of four and five figure bets.  Wiseguys, also known as “sharps”, are guys who make their living beating the books and the betting markets.

In this week’s column, I’m going to explain the single biggest difference between the approach of wiseguy bettors compared to the vast majority of bettors here in Las Vegas and around the world – guys who are recreational players or “squares”.  Next week, in Part 2 of this article, I’ll delve deeper into the contrasts between sports betting amateurs and sports betting professionals.

Most casual bettors don’t make a profit from their sports betting hobby.  This includes bettors who are relatively sharp as well as those who couldn’t pick a winner if their lives depended on it.  That’s not a horrible thing either – if every Read more

NFL goes small college conferences, AFL for replacement refs

06.04.2012     11:12 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Does it excite you that the outcome of crucial late season game between the Ravens and Steelers could be in the hands of a Sun Belt back judge? Due to unresolved contract negotiations with the NFL's referee union, the league is has begun to look elsewhere for employees. And by employees, we don't mean handpicking the top refs from the Big Ten or SEC. BCS Conference refs are run by NFL officials and therefore off limits. We're talking about small college conference and arena football.

MLB Betting Alert: Chicago White Sox continue to tempt fate with Sale

06.04.2012     07:17 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Prior to this year, Chicago's Chris Sale had never started a game at the professional level. The White Sox though converted him into a starter during the offseason and in his first outing, he threw 100 pitches. After four straight starts of 100 pitches or more, Sale's elbow flared up and the White Sox decided to return him to the bullpen. That proved short lived as Sale was back in the starting rotation less than two weeks later. Everything seemed to be going smoothly with three solid efforts and fairly moderate pitch counts (103, 103 and 97). But then Sale decided to go and strikeout 15 against Tampa Bay – a performance that required 115 pitches. And in his next outing, albeit on an extra day of rest, Sale threw a 119-pitch complete game against Seattle. So just to recap, we have a reliever turned starter who complained of elbow problems and less than a month later threw 234 pitches in consecutive starts. This is probably not going to end well. Sale is slated to throw Saturday vs. Houston.

Sunday MLB Betting Free Play: Pittsburgh Pirates at Milwauke Brewers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Pittsburgh (McDonald) at Milwaukee (Fiers) -105 O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Under

Milwaukee will be weakened offensively once again as their main production source Ryan Braun is scheduled to sit out again with recurring Achilles problems and now a sore hip. Without him last night, the Brewers managed to run Pittsburgh lefty Erik Bedard in 3.2 by scoring five runs with the key hit being Brooks Conrad’s three-run homer in the fourth. Today against Pirates RH James McDonald, Milwaukee’s success figures to be far less. McDonald has been dominating opposing lineups the past month and a half going 4-1 while posting a 1.81 ERA AND 0.89 WHIP over his last seven starts. McDonald’s better than 4-1 K:BB ratio (57 Ks- 13 BBs) and 1.15 K per inning numbers during this stretch are extremely favorable against this Milwaukee lineup which has struck out 429 times this season, second most in the NL. For the host, righty Michael Fiers makes the second major league start of his career. Read more
