College Football Handicapping: Kent State going with two QBs vs. Ball State

09.26.2012     08:15 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Ball State -1 at Kent State O/U 53

Due to a lack of production in the passing game, Kent State is expected to play two quarterbacks against Ball State on Saturday. Starter Spencer Keith is averaging a paltry 4.9 yards per attempt and had yet to throw a touchdown pass.

“I haven’t made a decision on which guy will start, but you’ll see them both some time on Saturday,” said Hazell. “On (Sunday) we practiced 20 periods and David took all the reps with the (starters). On Tuesday, Spencer’s going to get all the snaps with the starters. We’ll see how things go on Tuesday.”

College Football Betting: Tennessee going through growing pains with 3-4 defense

Tennessee at Georgia -13 O/U 60.5

Good article on 3-4 defenses in the SEC. It looks like Tennessee is experiencing the same type of struggles Georgia endured when it made the switch under defensive coordinator Todd Grantham back in 2010. During that initial season, the Bulldogs allowed 5.64 yards per play and 355.8 yards per game vs. the SEC. Last season, there was significant improvement (4.22 ypp, 247.9 ypg vs. SEC). Tennessee's 3-4 defense under first-year DC (and former Alabama LB coach) Sal Sunseri was gashed each of the last two weeks against Akron and Florida.

"From a coverage standpoint, we are pretty complex, and I think that you've got to get some reps in it," Grantham said of his system. "I think the best thing we've done is to maintain our consistency from day one here. As players develop and get that

College Football Betting: Tulane getting desperate at quarterback position

Louisiana-Monroe -18 at Tulane O/U 56

Thing have gotten so bad for Tulane that they are bringing players back who left the team in favor of a different sport. Quarterbacks Ryan Griffin and Devin Powell are banged up and may not be available to play Saturday. That leaves DJ Ponder who returned to the team in mid-August after a stint playing professional baseball.  Ponder has experience having saw action during both the 2010 and 2011 seasons. The only problem is he's not very good: 26-for-62, 216 yards, 0 TDs, 5 INTs. Head coach Curtis Johnson will determine who will start on Thursday.

“Yeah, I’m just excited to see him play. I want to see him play,” Tulane Coach Curtis Johnson said. “He looked good today, he had a great practice.”

“D.J.’s been here five years,” Griffin

NFL Betting News and Notes Week 3

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In this week's article, I examine the group of undefeated and winless teams heading into Week 4.

The 3-0 Club

Houston is the most complete of the remaining undefeated 3-0 squads. Quarterback Matt Schaub went on the road to Denver and outplayed Peyton Manning at his own game as he completed a pair of deep ball touchdown passes in the win. Their running game is strong with the Arian Foster and Ben Tate combo. The defense is good at all levels – DL, LB and in the secondary. J.J. Watt is making a strong case for being the best defensive player in the league. The Texans are simply getting things done on both sides of the football. They are a legitimate 3-0 team and a legitimate Super Bowl contender especially when they play at the level we saw from them on Sunday in Denver.

I do have some questions about the Arizona Cardinals and their 3-0 start but one thing can't be denied – their defense is flying around and making plays all over the field. We saw their ferocious pass rush make life miserable for Philadelphia quarterback Mike Vick. It's a defensive line with tons of playmakers including Calais Campbell, Darnell Dockett and Read more

College Football Betting: Illinois players not pleased with DC play calling

Penn State at Illinois -1.5 O/U 41.5

A few weeks ago we posted a blog on and how there was mass confusion with Illinois' defense during its 45-14 loss to Arizona. Following last week's 52-24 loss to Louisiana Tech, we now have players questioning the playing calling of first-year defensive coordinator Tim Banks. Last year under Vic Koenning, the Illini relied heavily on the blitz and it paid off as the unit ranked 7th nationally in total defense and 6th in sacks with 41. Head coach Tim Beckman defended the play calling saying that they were forced to adjust due to ASU and LT's up-tempo Read more

College Football Handicapping: First half betting trends to watch

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
While second half betting in football garners much more attention and money from bettors, there’s also money to be made on specific teams each season betting on the first half. Obviously there is much more speculation involved in playing first halves simply because you don’t get the benefit of watching an entire half play out before you make your wager. In examining all boarded teams that have had three first half betting results thus far, it’s interesting to note that there is only one team in the land that has gone OVER in all three. There are seven that have stayed UNDER the first half total in all three of their games. In this column I’ll take a quick look at the four teams with the most decisive results and then list the other four at the end. These four have been easy moneymakers:

1. Bowling Green – Where has the Falcons offense gone? Even with junior QB Matt Schilz at the helm and seven returning offensive starters, Bowling Green has produced a grand total of 17 combined points. The disheartening part for BGSU fans is that two of their opponents have been Toledo and Idaho who possess below average defenses. The lack of Read more

NFL Gambling Preview: Atlanta Falcons at San Diego Chargers

Atlanta at San Diego
Teddy Covers' Recommendation:
Atlanta
Sunday, 1 pm PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
San Diego -3 O/U 49
CRIS Current: San Diego -3 (-120) O/U 47.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: San Diego -1

It’s a tough spot for the road underdog as they travel West on a short week after hanging on to beat the Broncos on Monday Night Football. However, the spot is certainly factored into this pointspread. My power ratings show the Falcons as two points better than the Chargers right now, which should equate to a pointspread of San Diego -1 at Qualcomm Stadium – there’s line value with the road dog, if they can overcome the tough circumstances.

The Chargers haven’t opened a season with a 3-0 SU mark since Marty Schottenheimer’s first year as their head coach back in 2002. Under Norv Turner, this team has consistently underachieved coming out of the gate. Only once in his previous five years Read more

Sunday, 1:30 pm PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
Denver pk O/U 47.5
CRIS Current: Houston -2 O/U 46
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Houston -1

The exhibition season is officially over for the Texans after playing “warm-up” games against Miami and Jacksonville.  You can only play who’s on your schedule, and the Texans are now 2-0, but the test is much tougher this week against Denver.  The Texans pride themselves on their tremendous condition as a team, and with the Broncos off a Monday night affair, the Mile High conditions should be neutralized.  While holding the Jaguars to a franchise best 117 total yards last week, the Texans will feature a similar game plan in trying to control the clock.  The Texans ran the ball 48 times last week, which included over 43 minutes of possession time.  They are as complete and Read more

CRIS Opener:
Philadelphia -4 O/U 44
CRIS Current: Philadelphia -4 O/U 43.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Philadelphia -4

The Arizona Cardinals shocked the world with their win over Tom Brady and the Patriots last week. But they didn’t just win; frankly I thought their defense dominated the game and I for one saw nothing fluky about the victory. Now there are plenty of interesting stats that have been pointed out in this space before and some of them suggest the Cards have been lucky in their success. I can’t deny the stats but I can say having watched them last week that they at Read more

Bengals "D"-clawed
The Cincinnati Bengals were ranked 7th in the NFL last year defensively. They averaged 20.2 ppg allowed and 316.2 ypg allowed. Mike Zimmer's defense had a secondary capable of shutting down some of the better passing attacks and a front that caused havoc on quarterbacks. We haven't seen either of those two elements in their first two games of 2012. Cincinnati was absolutely torched by Baltimore in Week 1, allowing a staggering 44 points and 430 yards to the Ravens and their no-huddle offense. Despite coming away victorious on Sunday, they followed that up with a very troubling 27 points and 439 yards allowed to a Cleveland Browns offense led by a rookie quarterback who was nothing short of anemic in Week 1. Cincinnati has taken a steep decline defensively in just two games. The question now is this a blip on the radar for what was a terrific stop unit or a sign of things to come? If it's the latter, don't expect the Bengals to remain competitive in the AFC North against the likes of the Ravens and Steelers.
