05.12.2011     08:38 AM     Printer Friendly
Tiger Woods withdrew from The Players Championship after shooting 42 on the front nine. Woods was playing in his first event since the Masters after recovering from knee and Achilles injuries. Heading into the tournament, Woods was priced at 14-1 to win, making his the slight betting favorite over Luke Donald and Phil Mickleson. Congratulations to Fairway Jay for the early round win as he recommended fading Woods with both Sunday, Phil Mickleson and Ben Crane.

MLB Betting Tips: Amazing home/road splits for Mike Pelfrey

05.10.2011     11:51 AM     Printer Friendly
One of the stronger and perhaps lesser known home/road splits in baseball. New York’s Mike Pelfrey is working on a fourth straight season of substantial dichotomy. Since 2008, his home numbers are staggering with a 3.11 ERA in 367.1 innings. But during that same time frame, the road has been very unkind to Mr. Pelfrey with 257.1 innings and a 5.80 ERA.

Obviously he spends much of his time on the road against the National League East. Not surprisingly, the numbers aren’t very good.

Pelfrey Career Road ERA vs. NL East (3-14 W-L career)
Citizen Bank (Phillies) – 31.2 IP, 9.38 ERA
Turner Field (Braves) – 42.2 IP, 6.75 ERA
Sun Life (Marlins) – 33.2 IP, 5.88 ERA
Nationals Park – 24.2 IP, 4.74 ERA

No NL East to worry about tonight but rather a trip to Coors Field where in three career starts, Pelfrey owns a 3.24 ERA. Go figure.

MLB Handicapping: Blanton grinds out win but has red flags

05.10.2011     08:39 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Despite earning the win, Philadelphia's Joe Blanton looks to be damaged goods following Monday's start against Florida. Blanton lasted only five innings, threw 66 pitches and failed to hit 90 MPH in his first start off the DL (elbow). We aren't sure what Philadelphia's plans for Blanton are moving forward. He is tentatively scheduled to throw Sunday in Atlanta. If Blanton continues to pitch, there will perhaps be value in playing against him given Philadelphia's inflated status in the betting market.

“It was OK,” Blanton said. “I’m able to pitch.”

“We’ll see,” he said. “He’s definitely not 100 percent. He says it’s pitchable. There are certain pitches he feels it on and certain ones he doesn’t. We’ll see what he feels like Read more

Betting on horse racing remains a tough sell

05.06.2011     08:08 AM     Printer Friendly
Great article from the Las Vegas Sun that discusses why betting on horses is quickly becoming a dying art. Despite some in the industry looking for ways to "upgrade" the sport, the current format is very archaic and simply not worth the time and effort to anyone under the age of 30. It also doesn’t help that the risk/reward is so blatantly poor.

“Instead of $85 or $87 of every $100 bet going to pay all the winners, it’s more like $80 today,” Kornegay said. “The tracks are trying to figure out how to make money. But this ends up hurting the players.”

“You don’t get value for the money,” said Astarita, 62. Bettors are “churned” by fees tracks build into their payouts, Read more

Cloudy days favor hitters, sunny days favor pitchers

05.05.2011     02:15 PM     Printer Friendly
Interesting analysis on baseball results for cloudy days vs. sunny days. The study took 15 years of data and determined that batting averages were higher on days with cloud cover. One of the theories behind it was that cloud cover provides less opportunity for glare and thus better vision for hitters.

Earned runs allowed by home pitchers were lowest on clear days at 3.93, climbing to 4.26 on cloudy days. For visiting pitchers the ERA was 4.50 in the clear and 4.68 under the clouds.

"I was also surprised with the increase in home-team winning percentage from cloudy day games to clear day games. While I had anticipated that the home team would be better equipped to compensate for any potential disadvantages caused by increased sunlight, I did not foresee the increase in winning percentage that resulted," he said.

On clear days, home teams won 56 percent of their games and visitors Read more

Seven NBA teams since 2003 have won playoffs series despite 0-2 hole

05.05.2011     06:38 AM     Printer Friendly
Since the NBA changed its playoff format in 2003 to seven games in every round, coming back from a 0-2 deficit has not been as difficult as some may think. Seven teams, the most recent San Antonio in 2008, have been down 0-2 and won their respective series. Perhaps even more amazing is three or those seven took the series 4-2 meaning they won four straight games. But of the seven teams only once has a team lost the first two games on its home court (hello Lakers!) and went on to win (Dallas '05). Down 0-2, Boston plays host to Miami on Saturday. The Celtics are a +580 series underdog. The Lakers (+200 series) travel to Dallas on Sunday.

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Florida (Vazquez) at St. Louis (Carpenter) O/U 7.5
Recommendation: St. Louis -1.5 +115

We cashed our 20* Big Drive National League O/U Game of the Month on Tuesday when the Houston Astros romped over the Cincinnati Reds 10-4. On Monday we nailed our 20* National League R/L Game of the Month winner when the LA Dodgers clobbered the Chicago Cubs 5-2. Wednesday we’ll fire for more green and shoot for a Fairway free play winner and take the St. Louis Cardinals on the run/line at the plus-price

The surprising Florida Marlins (18-10) are off to their best start in franchise history and trail the first place Phillies by just one game in the NL East. St. Louis (17-13) leads the weaker NL Central and despite just 7-7 at home this season, note that the Cards were 52-29 at Busch Stadium last year. Ace Chris Carpenter (0-2, 3.89 ERA) is winless in six starts but that’s about to change tonight in St. Louis.

Carpenter has five quality starts this season, allowing just 3, 2, 0, 1 and 2 Read more

Indoor plumbing and central air optional for this casino

In order to comply with state laws, a Las Vegas gaming company was forced to "rough it" for a few hours and take to the outdoors. Actually, it was under a tent, with a portable generator, a handful of video poker machines and a Porta-Potty. All in the name of a maintaining a gaming license!

Experts weigh in on poker in the United States

04.29.2011     07:01 AM     Printer Friendly
Article from the Las Vegas Sun discussing some viewpoints of the poker industry in the United States.

It was “silly” for the poker sites to put themselves at risk in the United States, Rose said.

“We knew about this eight years ago,” added one compliance expert about the efforts by poker sites to hide gambling transactions from U.S. banks. “The sites made it easy for the feds.”

“Why the Justice Department feels it can roll the dice and pick one form of gambling to ban over another is beyond me, and it is beyond the millions of Americans who are being denied their hobby and, for professional players, their livelihood,” former U.S. Sen. Alfonse D’Amato, chairman of the online advocacy group Poker Players Alliance, wrote in a Washington Post editorial after the indictment. “Congress should hold the administration Read more

MLB Handicapping: Can it get any worse for the Minnesota Twins?

04.28.2011     07:53 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In all reality, it is amazing that Minnesota Twins are 9-13 when you consider the current state of the roster.

Michael Cuddyer - Moved to second base because of an injury to Tsuyoshi Nishioka. Cuddyer has spent much of his career as an outfielder as well as first and third base.

Tsuyoshi Nishioka - Entered the season as the projected starting second baseman. On the DL with a broken leg.

Carl Pavano - Suffering from flu-like symptoms; start pushed back to Sunday.

Joe Nathan - Coming off Tommy John surgery. 9.82 ERA, 2 blown saves.

Joe Mauer - Only 34 at-bats. On the DL with bilateral leg weakness, viral infection.

Delmon Young - Just placed on the DL with a rib injury.

Jim Thome - Has been out since Sunday with an oblique injury. Expected to play Thursday.

Francisco Liriano - Clearly not right with 24 earned runs (9.13 ERA) and Read more
