NFL Betting Preview: New England Patriots at Seattle Seahawks

New England at Seattle
Erin Rynning’s Recommendation:
Seattle
Sunday, 1 pm PT – CBS
CRIS Opener:
New England -4 O/U 44
CRIS Current: New England -3 O/U 44.5
Rob Veno’s Power Rating: New England -6

The Seahawks and Patriots will present an intriguing clash of styles on Sunday afternoon.  The 2012 Patriots offense is looking as good as ever, which is saying something considering how potent the unit has been over the years.  Quarterback Tom Brady is still the straw that stirs the drink running the fast paced unit with immense precision.  Importantly, the Patriots have found their running game averaging 165 yards per game on the ground.  However, the Seattle defense, and especially on their loud home turf, will create disruption for the Patriots offense.  Athletically the Seahawks defense can man-up not only up-front, but with their secondary as well.  The Seahawks own Read more

College Football Gambling Update: FIU's Medlock practiced on Tuesday and Wednesday

UPDATE

Middle Tennessee State -3 at Florida International O/U 57.5

Here's the most recent update on Florida International quarterback Jake Medlock. Medlock practiced on Tuesday and one beat writer used Fred G. Sanford as a way of describing his mobility. But after yesterday's practice, there was a far more positive outlook.

Quarterback Jake Medlock practiced Tuesday. Not much and, watching him come off the field as we waited to

Not satisfied with 4-1 start and a healthy QB, Chicago Bears consider no-huddle

10.10.2012     07:16 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
You're 4-1 with wins by 20, 17, 16, and 38. Why mess with a good thing? Well for one, we're dealing with the Chicago Bears so common logic has a way of not always prevailing. Heading into the bye week, there are rumblings that the offense wants to use more no-huddle.

‘‘They give me two or three plays — a list of plays — and we have a package for each game that we like to go to,’’ Cutler said. ‘‘But you can catch defenses off guard, you really can, and you get into a rhythm if you’re a little stale, if you have a lot of three-and-outs, stuff like that, or you’re coming out of the half or after a turnover.’’

“[Quarterbacks] try to operate the game plan,” Tice said. ‘‘We did have some no-huddle the other day where we gave Jay some really, really good chances to do either-or, and I thought he did a great job with the no-huddle. We like him managing the no-huddle.”

College Football Gambling: Florida International offense may return key players

Middle Tennessee State -3 at Florida International O/U 57

A few reports indicate that Florida International could get back starting quarterback Jake Medlock for Saturday's game against Middle Tennessee. Sports Options has Medloock’s status as “doubtful” but one FIU blog said that he practiced today and head coach Mario Cristobal said, “...looks like he’s got a good chance to be ready to go.” The Panthers could also return running backs Jeremiah Harden and Kendrick Rhodes.

“We haven’t found a way to overcome injuries,” coach Mario Cristobal said. “This game won’t slow down for you. That’s a new hurdle for us. In our body of work as a program, we’re always

NFL Betting News and Notes Week 5

10.09.2012     11:23 AM     ICC     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
You can forgive Pittsburgh Steelers backers for being a little upset after Sunday’s game. The Steelers defeated the Eagles 16-14 but failed to earn the pointspread cover as 3-point home favorites. Pittsburgh outgained Philadelphia 343-246, had a 136-78 on the ground, and were +2 in turnovers but still could not get the ATS win. It was a frustrating instance where statistical domination did not take the cash.

Imagine the surprise for Denver Broncos supporters who might have turned off the game when New England led 31-7 thinking a +6 pointspread cover was impossible. Sure enough two consecutive Denver touchdowns followed by a New England turnover and it was suddenly 31-21 with the Broncos inside the red zone looking for more points. The air was then taken out of the balloon when Broncos running back Willis McGahee fumbled inside the 10 and it was recovered by New England. This was another version of an NFL teaser. New England ran its no-huddle offense at a pace that would have made coaches like Chip Kelly and Dana Holgorsen proud. New England ran 77 offensive plays in the game and if they can finish off drives as efficiently in the red zone as they did on Sunday, Read more

College Foobtall Betting: Another favorable matchup for Arizona State's defensive front

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Arizona State -22.5 at Colorado O/U 56.5

Arizona State's defensive front has been a huge surprise this season with 20 sacks and an NCAA-best 10 tackles for loss per game (50 total). Two weeks ago, ASU dominated Cal in the trenches with seven sacks in a 27-17 win. The Sun Devils face yet another weak offensive line on Thursday when they travel to Colorado. The Buffaloes have allowed the second most sacks (22) in the country along with a whopping 40 tackles for loss.

NFL Handicapping: Kansas City Chiefs expected to start Quinn

10.09.2012     06:43 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Kansas City at Tampa Bay

The Kansas City Chiefs are expected to start quarterback Brady Quinn against Tampa Bay. Matt Cassel (head) hasn't been officially ruled out but he remains doubtful. Last week against Baltimore, the Chiefs attempted to shorten the game (34:10 TOP) by running the ball 50 times vs. only 18 passes. It worked to a certain degree as KC was down three in the fourth quarter but four turnovers (3 by Cassel) proved to be the difference. Sportsbooks have yet to put a line on Sunday's game against the Buccaneers.

“They’re going to run several tests to see where he is. Generally, concussions are not good, but we’re concerned about the safety and welfare of the player and we’re going to give him an opportunity to get well. In the meantime, Brady Quinn has to get ready to play, and Ricky Stanzi has to be ready to

Teddy Covers' Wiseguy Report: A look back at NFL Week 5 action

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A full quarter of the NFL teams entered Week 5 at .500 and two more reached the .500 mark after notching victories on Sunday. I focused on five of those teams closely during this week’s NFL mayhem. Here are my notes from their respective performances.

Buffalo Bills - How bad is this defense? Well, they set an NFL record for futility – no team in league history had ever allowed 300 rushing yards and 300 passing yards in the same game. And that came just one week after they allowed 45 second half points on seven consecutive scoring drives against New England, making the Bills the first team since 1950 to allow 550+ yards in back-to-back weeks. Now that’s a struggling stop unit!

This pass D has awful fundamentals, giving up yardage in chunks. Every decent QB should have a field day throwing downfield -- there's no pass rush, and these cornerbacks are not shutdown guys. And there’s no question that this defense lacked effort throughout the second half here – they flat out quit.

We got the ‘bad’ Ryan Fitzpatrick today. Fitz continues to struggle with his deep throws, missing Stevie Johnson for a sure Read more

College Football Betting Trends: Sun Belt mid-week games continue to go UNDER

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Thursday marks another mid-week conference game in the Sun Belt with Troy playing host to Western Kentucky. A few years back I noticed that a lot of these non-Saturday affairs were going UNDER the total. In fact, dating back to the 2005 season, 17 of 22, 77% have cashed UNDER tickets (see chart below). The reason? I'm not exactly sure. Some of the games were played on Tuesdays which can't be good for timing/routines. The jitters/nerves/adrenaline of playing a "spotlight game" on national TV could lead to slow starts. For example, last week’s matchup between Arkansas State and Florida International produced only three first quarter points and the game ended up going UNDER by 2.5 points. In last year's three mid-week games, the first halves produced 10, 12 and 14 points. The second halves of those games (not including overtime) produced 30, 38 and 32 points.

NFL Betting Free Play: Philadelphia Eagles at Pittsburgh Steelers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Philadelphia at Pittsburgh -3 (-125) O/U 43
Recommendation: Pittsburgh

The Steelers will be looking forward to getting back out on the football field Sunday after stewing about their loss to the Oakland Raiders for two weeks.  Yes, the Steelers will be off their bye week for this game, but perhaps more importantly will welcome back defense stalwarts Troy Polamalu and James Harrison.  When you’re talking about two of the last four defensive players of the year, you’re talking about real impact players.  With the Eagles vulnerable from an offensive line standpoint, the Steelers should add to their disappointing amount of just five sacks.  In addition, Rashard Mendenhall is expected to return to the field as well.  Pittsburgh’s running game is averaging 2.6 yards per carry with its longest run from scrimmage just 13 yards.  Look for the Steelers to hit a few big runs up the middle where the Eagles can be vulnerable.  The Read more
