Betting against the Minnesota Timberwolves in April is not a bad idea

04.18.2012     06:09 AM     Printer Friendly
The last time the Minnesota Timberwolves won a game in April was back in 2009 (0-27 SU). The against-the-spread results during that span are also awful (7-20). These outcomes aren't that shocking considering that Aprils in the NBA are notorious for bringing out the best in "tank mode" from bottom-tier teams. This year's Minnesota squad however was looking to reverse that trend but a brutal schedule following the All-Star break and various injuries made it too difficult to overcome. The T-wolves play at Detroit tonight, host fellow "tanker" Golden State on Sunday, and close out the year vs. Denver.

NBA Betting Notes and Quotes 4-6-2012

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It’s been a few weeks since I’ve offered some notes and quotes from around the NBA.  The end of this hurried and abbreviated regular season is looming – the playoffs start next weekend.  It’s time for a 1500 word tour around the league in an effort to identify some “bet-on” and “bet-against” teams between now and the beginning of the postseason.

The Minnesota Timberwolves enter the stretch run of the season on their longest losing streak since their 15 game skid to close out last year.  Leading scorer and rebounder Kevin Love has no current timetable to return from his lingering concussion.  Point guard Ricky Rubio has been out for months, and his replacement, Luke Ridnour, is dealing with a sprained right ankle that has caused him to miss their last six defeats.

Center Nikola Pekovic made it very clear what Minnesota’s biggest issue is right now: “We need some other players to step up.”  But even with 20+ point efforts from JJ Barea, Michael Beasley and Anthony Randolph last Saturday against Oklahoma City, the T-wolves couldn’t snap their losing Read more

NBA late-season situational handicapping

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
I started a thread in the Sportsmemo posting forum about the late season playoff push and Western Conference teams playing for the final playoff spots. Here is a list of the teams battling for a playoff position and a top-8 spot along with their remaining schedules.

5. Memphis (35-25)... at Minn, NO, at Char, Port, Cleve, Orl
6. Dallas (34-27)...at Utah, Hou, GS, at Chic, at Atl
7. Denver (33-27)...at Hou, LAC, at Phoenix, Orl, at OKC, at Minn
8. Houston (32-28)...Denver, at Dallas, at NO, GS, at Miami, NO
9. Phoenix (31-29)...Port, OKC, LAC, Denver, at Utah, SA
10. Utah (31-30)...Dallas, at Port, Orl, Phoenix, Port

Phoenix holds the tiebreaker advantage over Utah while the Jazz have the tiebreaker edge over Houston and Denver.

The Nuggets beat the Rockets last night in Denver and play at Houston tonight in a home and away back-to-back. The Suns are a huge, adjusted favorite (-11) over the Trailblazers tonight after Portland saw their final outside chance at the playoffs slip away with a last second loss at Sacramento Sunday.

Utah has a huge game tonight at home against the defending champion Dallas Read more

MLB Betting Update: Los Angeles Angels continue to struggle

04.16.2012     07:41 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Slow start for the hyped Los Angeles Angels (3-6, -5.50 units) who are set to begin a seven-game home stand against Oakland and Baltimore. One scout said he found it hard to believe the Angels won't be in the mix considering the team's starting pitching depth. But, the bullpen has been shaky as has the plate discipline (.315 OBP).

"They can be pitched to, because they have so many free swingers. They have a lot of guys who like to swing the bat."

Even after adding patient hitters Pujols and Chris Iannetta, the Angels went into Sunday having walked in 6.5 percent of their plate appearances, putting them 24th in the league in that category. Vernon Wells, Peter Bourjos and Morales still haven't taken a walk. Decline, obviously, could also be a factor. The average age of the Nos. 3 through 6 hitters Friday was nearly 35.

Sunday MLB Free Betting Pick: Detroit Tigers at Chicago White Sox

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Detroit (Porcello) at -Chicago- (Sale) -105 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Chicago

I'm buying Chicago lefty Chris Sale, especially early in the season when fatigue isn't an issue and teams are getting their first extended look at him. Sale was one of the better middle relievers in the American League last season and is starting to develop some solid off-speed offerings. He looked sharp in his first start, allowing one earned run in 6.2 innings (and a modest 100 pitches). I enjoy watching Detroit's Rick Porcello but he's never going to be a front-of-the-rotation arm. He generally throws strikes and mixes things well, but without big time velocity or an outpitch, he has trouble going entire games without getting into trouble. The White Sox are obviously familiar with Porcello having seen him seven times (6.91 ERA). Let's also not forget that the White Sox are playing some good baseball having won four straight with a chance for the three-game sweep against the Tigers. I think it happens.

NBA Gambling Preview: Miami and New York clash on ABC

04.15.2012     07:34 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Miami at -3 at New York O/U 188.5

Possible first round preview with Miami taking on New York for an early start (10 am PT) today. The Knicks are currently tied with Philadelphia for the seventh and eighth spots in the Eastern Conference (NY owns tiebreaker). Defense seems to be the main reason behind New York's late season surge (13-4 SU/ATS run). On Friday the Knicks held Washington to 65 points. Only four teams during that 17-game stretch topped 100 points. The Miami-New York series has trended heavily towards the under at 0-5-1 the last six including this year's two meeting that went under by 14.5 and 8.5 points.

“We know they’re good,” Heat forward Chris Bosh said. “We know what they’re capable of. Any series, even last year, the two-seven matchup we had with Philly, it was a tough series. They were a tough team. You have to Read more

NBA Handicapping: Rockets playing better defense since moving Camby to center

04.13.2012     07:07 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Phoenix at Houston -4 O/U 200

Important game in Houston tonight as the Rockets and Phoenix Suns battle for a berth in the postseason. The Rockets have won four of five and are playing better defense since moving Marcus Camby to center.

In the first six games with Camby starting, Rockets opponents made 42.5 percent of their shots and 30.1 percent of their 3s and averaged 94.8 points.

Before the switch, opponents made 45.6 percent of their shots and 32.1 percent of their 3s and averaged 99.5 points.

“We’ve been getting better in pick-and-roll defense, and we have gotten better at guards breaking to the basket, so we have a solid base,” Rockets forward Luis Scola said. “I think we’re still good. It just wasn’t a good game (Wednesday) night.”

NBA Gambling Notes: Bulls and Heat square off in Chicago

04.12.2012     06:40 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Important game in the Eastern Conference tonight with Chicago playing host to Miami. Early reports say Derrick Rose (ankle) will play. The Bulls (8 games remaining) have a three-game lead over the Heat (10 games remaining) for the no. 1 seed. The teams split the first two meetings with Chicago covering both contests as an underdog.

“We’re chasing them,” Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said. “They’re the Eastern Conference Champions. We’re chasing them. That’s the way we’re looking at it.”

“One year we didn’t have the No. 1 seed and we won the championship and one year we had the best record in the league, and we didn’t get to the Finals, so I really don’t pay it any mind,” Hamilton said, referring to his years with the Pistons. “You’ve got to be playing the best basketball you can play going into the playoffs.”
