MLB Handicapper Free Play: Oakland A's at Seattle Mariners

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oakland (Gonzalez) -143 at Seattle ( Furbush) O/U 7
Recommendation: Oakland

Good spot for A’s lefty Gio Gonzalez to snap out of his two game funk as he faces a team that he has defeated four consecutive time heading into today. All of those outings have been quality starts which resulted in a 2.28 ERA. Seattle’s offense has been especially dreadful the past couple of months against left-handed pitching; since June 1st, the Mariners have gone 1-10 versus southpaw starters scoring a total of 18 runs in those 11 games. During this span they own a .186 BA, .236 OBP, .236 SLG and .471 OPS. Seattle’s current batters own a .217 BA and .275 SLP with 0 home runs in 69 at bats against Gonzalez.

The A’s offense has only six total at bats against 25-year-old lefty Charlie Furbush but the rookies’ first two starts in the majors indicate Oakland could be productive in this contest. Furbush’s starts have seen him last less than five innings (7.1 total) in each while Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: New York Yankees at Chicago White Sox

New York (Burnett) at Chicago (Floyd) +100 O/U 9
Recommendation: Chicago

I'll back the White Sox with Gavin Floyd on the mound today as they try to avoid a sweep by the Yankees. Despite being just 52-56 on the season, the White Sox are still in the AL Central race; just 5.5 games out of first place. Floyd has decent marks for the season, but has really turned it on of late. In his last three starts he has allowed just two earned runs in 22.1 innings, with 16 strikeouts and a minuscule 16 base runners. Historically, he’s been up to the task against the Yankees with four straight quality starts including an 8-inning, 2-earned run, 10-strikeout performance in New York back in April. Chicago's offense continues to struggle, especially with Paul Konerko out of the lineup, but they should put up some runs against an inconsistent AJ Burnett. Burnett has allowed four or more runs in five of his last 10 starts. He’s also had just two quality starts on the road this year in eight tries.

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Arizona Diamondbacks at San Francisco Giants

Arizona (Marquis) +138 at San Francisco (Vogelsong) O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Arizona

The Diamondbacks have to be feeling good following their 6-1 win as big underdog over Tim Lincecum and the Giants Tuesday. Arizona is now tied with San Francisco for first place in the NL West after taking the first two games of the series and will send newly acquired right-hander Jason Marquis (8-5, 3.95 ERA) to the hill. Marquis is a competitive and consistent veteran that should help the Diamondbacks in the closing two months, and he’s capable of handling the pressure in his opening assignment with his new team.

Marquis was solid in his last two road starts at LA and Houston, and the former Nationals hurler pitched a complete game shutout against the Giants in late April; allowing just five hits, no walks and seven strikeouts. His career numbers against the Giants are very solid with a 2.47 ERA, .206 BAA in 11 starts. His solid sinker should serve him well against the Giants at AT&T Park. Read more

MLB Betting Alert: Houston Astros' lineup one for the ages

08.02.2011     01:10 PM     Printer Friendly
Have you seen the roster/line-up of the Houston Astros lately? Simply amazing. Even more humorous is the editorial explaining how it all went down. Classic lines include, "Carlos Lee, your cleanup hitter, is tied for the most home runs (five) hit at Minute Maid Park this season, which sounds great until you realize (a) he is tied in that category with Lance Berkman and (b) Berkman is on the Cardinals." Or this absolute gem, "In other news, Ed Wade likes to try to win 5K's by slicing his own Achilles tendons with a Ginsu knife."

And to make it even more entertaining, The Lineup, as it will forever be known, was part of a rare victory last night. If eliminate Carlos Lee and Clint Barmes, tonight’s The Lineup (see below) is comprised of six guys with a combined 500 MLB at-bats and TWO home runs. Not surprising, for a second straight day we see the betting market fading the Read more

MLB Betting Trends: What happened to the Oakland we used to know?

08.01.2011     12:18 PM     Printer Friendly
A thread started in the Sportsmemo Posting Forum last week (here's the link) pointing out Oakland's recent trend of high scoring games. Since July 8, the A's are on a 15-2-2 O/U run in which the offense has averaged 5.8 runs per game with splits of .299 BA/.828 OPS. The pitching staff has struggled with a 4.91 ERA while the defense accounted for 12 unearned runs. The trend is an obvious departure from the style of baseball Oakland has played for much of the season – good pitching, awful hitting. The betting market however doesn't seem eager to get off the train just yet with tonight’s total in Seattle bet up from 6.5 to 7 at most sportsbooks.

MLB Betting Trends: Games lined 8.5 or lower at Coors Field

08.01.2011     11:48 AM     Printer Friendly
Philadelphia (Hamels) -135 at Colorado (Chacin) O/U 8

Some numbers to consider for tonight's game in Colorado: Totals 8.5 or lower are 18-6 O/U this season, including 5-2 O/U at 8. In those 24 games, there was an average of 11.2 runs per game. For the year, games at Coors Field have averaged 10.6 runs per game and the ballpark ranks third (.782) behind Boston and Texas in terms of OPS. Colorado's Jhoulys Chacin has accounted for four of the six "under 8/8.5's" but has gone over the total in each of his last two home starts (11 IP, 10 ERs combined). Games line 9 or above are 13-14 O/U.

MLB Betting Notes: Arroyo continues to get pounded with lackluster fastball

08.01.2011     07:49 AM     Printer Friendly
Cincinnati (Arroyo) -118 at Houston (Norris) O/U 8.5

There always seems to be something bothering Bronson Arroyo these days though the veteran right-hander says all if fine...physically. Manager Dusty Baker was suspicious following Arroyo's last start (6 IP, 4 ERs) and pleaded for a truthful answer regarding the dramatic decline in velocity and effectiveness. Since tossing an 8-inning, 1-run gem against Toronto back on June 19, Arroyo's numbers are: 36.2 IP, 48 hits, 13 HRs, 7.36 ERA. Below is a chart of his game-by-game average fastball velocity since 2007.

"I talked to the trainers and they said that he's fine," Baker said. "Sometimes you're just not pitching Read more

MLB Betting Notes: Wang returns for Nats after two-year absence

07.29.2011     06:39 AM     Printer Friendly
New York (Gee) -115 at Washington (Wang) O/U 9

Have arm will travel. Chien-Ming Wang makes his MLB return after the Washington Nationals took a shot and signed the 31-year-old last season. Wang last pitched in the majors back in 2009 for the Yankees before being shutdown due to shoulder problems. He made six rehab starts with a 3.14 ERA, 17 Ks, 4 BBs in 29 innings. Nationals’ manager Davey Johnson said he'll be on an 80-90 pitch count tonight against New York.

“His first start up here after a couple years, he’s going to be a little more hyped,” Johnson said. “It’s going to take some more out of him.”

“Rather than rearrange everything, he’ll be kind of insurance,” Johnson said. “The almighty trading deadline is coming. We may do something there. Read more

Seattle's losing streak explained by use of moneylines

07.28.2011     08:37 AM     Printer Friendly
FanGraphs uses baseball moneylines to better explain the probability of Seattle's 17-game losing streak which was snapped yesterday in New York. According to the numbers, the odds of losing 17 straight games given the parameters was about 0.01 percent. The Mariners were underdogs in 15 of the 17 games with two in the pick 'em price range depending on what sportsbook you go by.

MLB Betting Alert: Lincecum schedule to start, Vogelsong ready to fill in

07.28.2011     07:38 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
San Francisco (Lincecum) -115 at Philadelphia (Kendrick) O/U 7.5

Tim Lincecum was scratched for a second consecutive day on Wednesday due to flu-like symptoms. According to reports, Lincecum lost some weight and felt pretty weak. If he's unable to go tonight, Ryan Vogelsong would fill in and throw on regular rest. Lincecum hasn't pitched since July 20th.

Cain's start was advanced a day because of Tim Lincecum's illness. As Lincecum returned to work Wednesday he said he had lost a few pounds but felt better. He went through light baseball activities. Bochy said he would wait until today to decide between Lincecum and Ryan Vogelsong for tonight's start.

"We hope he's going to be able to get his strength back and be able to go," Bochy said. "If not, we're covered with Vogelsong. Obviously, we don't want to pitch him if he's washed out. We'll rely on Timmy and the Read more
