MLB Interleague Series Betting Pick: Chicago at Arizona

Chicago White Sox at Arizona Diamondbacks
Recommendation: Chicago +115 Series Price

White Sox starting pitching is on a roll right now having thrown eight quality starts in their last nine games. The rotation has recorded a 2.69 ERA and 1.12 WHIP during this stretch. More importantly, Chicago’s trio of starter’s for this series (Edwin Jackson, John Danks, and Philip Humber) have combined for a 2.16 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in six starts since June 4th. Opponents have accumulated just 48 total bases in the last 41.6 IP by this threesome and Arizona’s offense tends to live and die by extra base hits. The Diamondbacks sticks have cooled off dramatically at home this month scoring 27 runs in eight games for an average of 3.38 per contest. Their bullpen has also been a concern here in June as indicated by their 5.44 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 18.97 PPI. They also figure to be without their top pair of relievers JJ Putz and David Hernandez for tonight’s contest since Putz pitched the past two nights Read more

MLB Biggest Betting Market Moves 6/17/2011

06.17.2011     11:10 AM     Printer Friendly
The two biggest market moves yesterday cashed with Boston/Tampa going under and Arizona beating San Francisco in extra innings. Today, the largest side move was in the Yankees/Cubs game with New York opening -130 and steamed up to -160. The betting marketplace doesn't seem all too confident in Doug Davis against an American League offense. As for totals, Tampa was bet heavily towards the under in all three games against Boston (0-3 O/U) but bettors have switched their stance with a huge move towards the over as the Rays play host to Florida. The game opened 8.5 but is now 9.5 across the board. Lines from Pinnacle.

Side Opener: New York (Garcia) -130 at Chicago (Davis)
Side Current: New York -160/Chicago +150

Total Opener: Florida (Hand) at Tampa (Davis) 8.5u-108

MLB Interleague Free Play: Detroit Tigers at Colorado Rockies

Detroit (Porcello) +115 at Colorado (Hammel) O/U 9.5
Recommendation: Detroit

Interleague baseball resumes as the Detroit Tigers (38-31) travel to Coors Field to take on the Colorado Rockies (33-35) Friday night. Colorado starter Jason Hammel (3-6) is not one to be trusted as a betting favorite over the first place Tigers. The Rockies have lost his last eight starts dating to May 5th and Hammel has gone 0-5 during that stretch. His ERA (3.65) and surface stats look okay, but Hammel has just 45 strikeouts in 81 innings and his xERA his last three starts is over 7.20. Note too that Hammel was removed from his last start with what was said to be a stiff back.

Detroit young right-hander Rick Porcello (6-4, 3.61 ERA) will pitch at Coors Field for the first time in his three-year career. He’s a groundballer who has been terrific in his last six road starts allowing just 1, 0, 1, 2, 1 and 1 runs. He’s definitely worth a 5-inning wager with the Tigers sub-par but recently improved bullpen Read more

Pittsburgh (Correia) at Cleveland (Tomlin) -140 O/U 8
Recommendation: Over

There was an expected regression from Cleveland's Josh Tomlin though perhaps not as much as we've seen. Tomlin has allowed 22 earned runs over his last 23 innings. His strikeout-to-walk ratio has been fine (16:2) it is just that he's simply not fooling anyone anymore (39 hits). Pitching to contact is a fine philosophy but when you are right-handed and tossing in the mid-80's, you walk a very fine line. Pittsburgh's Kevin Correia is similar to Tomlin in that he's managed to put up solid seasonal numbers despite relatively average stuff. But here's a guy with a 4.48 career ERA despite over half of his innings coming at AT&T and Petco parks. And if we look closely, though not as dramatic, we are starting to see a Tomlin-like regression. Over his last seven starts, Correia’s produced much more realistic numbers (43 IP, 4.60 ERA, 50 hits, 20 Ks, .765 OPS). The Indians have really struggled offensively – something Read more

MLB Betting Alert: Braves send rookie Delgado to the hill

06.17.2011     06:27 AM     Printer Friendly
Texas (Lewis) at Atlanta (Delgado)

You know you're old when someone born in 1990 just got a call-up to the Show. Atlanta is scheduled to start 21-year old rookie Randall Delgado tonight against Texas after scratching Tommy Hanson due to shoulder tendinitis. According to reports, Delgado is highly regarded and one of the top pitching prospects in baseball. He features a two-seam fastball, change-up and 12-6 curveball. He's averaged over a strikeout per inning (2.95-to-1 ratio) in nearly 500 innings of work in the minors. Here is a link (thanks Rob Veno!) with some video clips

MLB Biggest Betting Market Moves 6/16/2011

06.16.2011     12:37 PM     Printer Friendly
We had some technical difficulties in the office yesterday (the power was out) and were unable to post our biggest MLB market movers. Just as a recap, the biggest side move for a second straight day involved the Washington/St. Louis series with the Nats opening +122 and closing -105. The move was correct as Washington cruised to a 10-0 win. In the totals market, Baltimore/Toronto moved a full run; bet up from 8 to 9 right before game time. That move proved incorrect as the Jays won 4-1. Today, Arizona seems to have garnered the most betting attention; bet up from an opener of -110 to its current mark of -137 against San Francisco. The Boston/Tampa series has seen action on the under each of the three games as tonight’s 8 was quickly taken down to 7.5u-115.

Side Opener: San Francisco (Vogelsong) at Arizona (Kennedy) -110
Side Current: Arizona -137/ San Francisco +129

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Pittsburgh Pirates at Houston Astros

Pittsburgh (McDonald) at Houston (Lyles) -110 O/U 8
Recommendation: Houston

The surprising Pittsburgh Pirates (34-33) go for the road sweep at Houston today against the Astros (25-44). Getaway day and early start at Minute Maid Park and the Astros will send recently called up rookie right-hander Jordan Lyles to them mound.

The Astros left 14 men on base in yesterday’s loss and the Pirates pitchers threw 189 pitches. I expect a bounce back today as Houston completes a 10-game home stand. The Astros dominated the Pirates at home last season, going 9-0 are now 15-5 at home and 22-13 overall against Pittsburgh the last three seasons.

Houston manager Brad Mills has decided to keep Jordan Lyles in the starting rotation and return Aneury Rodriguez to the bullpen. Lyles is a key piece to the pitching future for Houston’s starting staff and will be given every chance to succeed. Lyles reached the Majors quickly after being selected in the supplemental first round of the 2008 Read more

MLB Betting Alert: Stewart makes debut for Toronto Blue Jays

06.16.2011     07:29 AM     Printer Friendly
Baltimore (Guthrie) at Toronto (Stewart) -115 O/U 9

After sending Kyle Drabek to the minors, Zach Stewart will make his MLB debut for Toronto this afternoon against Baltimore. The right-hander was a third round pick for Cincinnati back in 2008 (came over in the Scott Rolen trade). Originally a reliever, Stewart was capable of throwing in the mid-90s but since become a starter, his velocity sits 89-93 MPH. His strikeout numbers are not great (155 in 206 IP last two years at Double-A). Stewart's best attributes are his sinking fastball and slider. Reports state that while not having as much upside as Drabek, Stewart has much better command. Overall, he projects to be a third or fourth starter at the MLB level. Here is a video of Stewart – looks like a run-of-the-mill righty.
