NFL Handicapping: Dallas Cowboys healthier after much needed bye week

10.11.2011     12:59 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Dallas at New England -7 O/U 55

Dallas' bye week couldn't have come at a better time as the team was able to improve the health of a number of key players. The secondary practiced together for the first time since early training camp and wide receivers Miles Austin and Dez Bryant are near full strength. The team also had a scoreboard installed at practice to better simulate late game situations. Good idea Big D.

“It’s definitely exciting to see what everybody’s going to do now that everybody’s back,” said Alan Ball, who has started once and played plenty but now slips back to being the fourth cornerback. “I think everybody is going to do just fine getting back in and getting into our system.”

“You guys have heard me Read more

NFL Handicapping: Injuries to Houston prompt betting interest on Baltimore

Houston at Baltimore -7.5 O/U 45

Reacting to the injuries of Mario Williams and Andre Johnson, bettors have steamed Baltimore up to as high as an 8-point favorite for Sunday's home tilt against Houston. Williams tore his pectoral muscle and will miss the rest of the season while Johnson is listed as "out" with a hamstring injury.

Baltimore comes in off a bye week. Under head coach John Harbaugh, the Ravens are a perfect 3-0 SU, 3-0 ATS after the bye. Baltimore is on a 47-22 ATS run as a home favorite including 15-7 ATS under Harbaugh.

Welcome to Teddy Covers’ unique look at the NFL. Teddy watches games all day on Sunday, typing furiously on his laptop while giving you the key info that the box scores and game recaps don’t necessarily have. This week: NFC Tidbits from Week 5 Part II. If you missed, Part I, click here.

New York Giants
This defensive line is just eating up Seattle's offensive line; a one-sided battle. They forced two key turnovers inside their own red zone largely because of their overwhelming pressure up front – keeping the team in the game when they could have been blown off the field. The Giants’ six sacks were just the tip of the iceberg – they were knocking down passes, blowing up runs in the backfield, forcing quick throws – everything you’d expect a dominant defensive front to do. But the secondary continues to be an extraordinarily weak link, both against the run and the pass. Read more

NFL Handicapping: Detroit Lions continue amazing pointspread run

10.11.2011     07:25 AM     Printer Friendly
Last night's win and cover over Chicago helped Detroit maintain one of the strongest pointspread runs in recent NFL history. Since the start of 2010's preseason, the Lions are 23-5-1 against the spread. Even more impressive is that based on the most common closing line, they are in the midst of a 13-0-1 ATS run (including preseason). Early lines show Detroit a -6/-6.5-point favorite for Sunday's home game against upstart San Francisco.

NFL Handicapping: Practice time now different during bye weeks

10.11.2011     07:07 AM     Printer Friendly
Because of the new collective bargaining agreement, practice time during the bye week is much shorter than in years past. Players are still allowed to work out, study film and rehab injuries but according to reports out of Tennessee camp, after Monday's practice, the team is technically off until Oct. 17.

“We’re very limited with what we can do,” Coach Mike Munchak said. “The bye week, when I played, was a long week. You practiced three or four days in pads and got after it pretty good. You didn’t look forward to the bye week. Now, it is different; guys look forward to the bye week.”

Detroit Lions now a touchdown favorite over Chicago Bears in Las Vegas

10.10.2011     02:02 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Chicago at Detroit -6.5 O/U 47

The Lions look to keep their perfect season intact as they host the Bears tonight on Monday Night Football. Most offshore sportsbooks opened the game Detroit -6 but the prevailing number this morning was -5.5. I didn't take long however for the game to creep back Detroit's way as -5.5 became -6 and then -6.5 (-115). In Las Vegas, there was a similar progression though the Hilton, Caesars, Mirage, Leroy's and Stations all moved to a flat -7. The Wynn and Lucky's appear to be the only Vegas books still dealing -6.5. Note that the Hilton priced this game Detroit -2 with its Game of the Year lines back in late May.

NFL Handicapping: Jags' Del Rio looks to be on borrowed time

10.10.2011     01:41 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Jacksonville at Pittsburgh -12.5 O/U 40

Looks to be the beginning of the end for Jacksonville head coach Jack Del Rio.

"Just put it on my shoulder; I'm not doing enough"
"Holy cow, you have to be s****ing me. It's unbelievable."
"Like I said, I hate it, I hate losing. I'm sick of sitting here and answering questions about why we're not winning."

“It’s like the same thing every week now,” said defensive tackle Terrance Knighton. “[Opposing] team gets a lead on us at the end of the game. Bad communication, bad substitution, the little stuff is killing us right now.”

Arizona
It's five weeks into the season and we're not seeing many signs of progress here. Arizona couldn't run effectively in Week 1 against Carolina; they still can't run now. Kevin Kolb lacked any sort of chemistry with his receivers today, and never developed any comfort level in the pocket whatsoever. He’s thrown more interceptions than touchdowns so far this season. Sure, he’s better than Max Hall or Richard Bartel, but this was supposed to be a significant upgrade. How hard can it be to chuck it up in Larry Fitzgerald’s direction and let him catch it? Given the weakness of this defense – a defense that really struggled after facing some early adversity here – the quarterback play here had better improve by leaps and bounds or the Read more

NFL Gambling Trends: Another weekend of offense and overs

10.10.2011     07:20 AM     Printer Friendly
Playing an NFL game under the total is currently one of the most dangerous bets on the board. With everything perfectly suited for offenses, producing points in the league has never been so easy. On Sunday, Seattle (and Tarvaris Jackson) netted 36 points on the road. San Francisco's vanilla offense hung a league-high 48 points on Tampa Bay. Even Indianapolis' Curtis Painter got into the act with 277 yards passing and two touchdowns. On the season, the league is 48-27-1, 64% O/U – or thereabouts depending on what numbers you use. Last week went 9-3 O/U and two of those losses were by 0.5 and 3.5. The only dead nuts under winner was the Sunday Night game between Green Bay and Atlanta (25-14 final, total of 53.5). No surprise as every total currently lined for Week 6 has been bet up off of the opener.
