MLB Free Betting Pick: 2011 All Star Game

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
After all of the significant personnel losses to the American League pitching staff, have to side with the short priced NL side here. The star studded list of subtractions includes Justin Verlander, CC Sabathia, Felix Hernandez, Jon Lester, James Shields, David Price and Mariano Rivera. The extreme void left by those absences now makes the National League hitters look much more capable of scoring four or more runs. With the pitching rotation they can run out there, the task of scoring looks to be more difficult for the AL. NL starter Roy Halladay needs to throw well for the first couple of innings and then the NL can combat the left-handed dominant AL starting lineup with southpaws Cliff Lee and Clayton Kershaw. From there, Jair Jurrjens, Tim Lincecum and a lights out bullpen are strong enough to close the deal. Also find advantages with the National League reserve position players in overall hitting and base running speed. Chase Field familiarity could be a plus as well, especially for the NL staff which has thrown there before. The Read more

We advise Astros bettors to look away. If you've been out in front on the Pittsburgh Pirates you've pocketed some very nice profits! The regular schedule resumes on Thursday but for now, enjoy the All Star break.

MLB Betting Stock Watch: Jhoulys Chacin showing signs of regression

07.08.2011     12:52 PM     ER Sports     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Jhoulys Chacin – Over the last calendar year, Chacin has been one of the best starters in the National League with a 2.89 ERA in 164.2 innings.  When you consider 15 of those 26 starts were at Coors Field, his performance is truly amazing.  However, if we can find cracks in the armor it also represents an opportunity to fade the young gun and make some money betting against him.  In his last two starts, Chacin has really battled himself on the mound.  The numbers are highly questionable with 10 earned runs allowed in 10 frames.  In addition, and most troubling, is his 9/9 strikeout-to-walk ratio with four home runs allowed.  He admitted he’s a bit of a mess mechanically, which is certainly concerning for the groundballer.  He also had a start pushed back due to arm soreness.  That gives us plenty of reasons to fade Chacin moving forward.

MLB Betting Stock Watch: Barry Zito in good form since return

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Barry Zito – No question, Zito has largely been a disappointment since joining the Giants including last season when he had no impact on their World Series run.  He was however all set for a spot in 2011’s rotation but injured his foot in March.  The setback required lengthy rehab including four starts in minors.  During his time away from the club, an interesting sensation seemed to occur as he somewhat fell back in love with the game of baseball.  The time spent in the lower levels among young, hungry players that most likely will never garner the opportunity he was given made a huge impact. And perhaps more importantly, from a pitching perspective, the experience allowed him to refine his mechanics and create more forward, downhill movement towards home plate.

By all accounts, the transformation worked wonders as he continues to pitch for a chance to stay in this stellar rotation.  In his three starts since being recalled he’s allowed only three runs Read more

MLB Betting Alert: Vazquez finds success after velocity bump

07.08.2011     12:05 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Houston (Lyles) at Florida (Vazquez) -143 O/U 8

Amazing turnaround for Florida's Javier Vazquez with a 1.54 ERA over his last four starts. Early in the season, Vazquez was dealing with a lack of velocity as well as a death in the family. It resulted in a 7.09 ERA in 13 starts. The Miami Herald reported that of late he has been using his lower body more in order to pick up extra velocity. Check out his charts at FanGraphs and you'll notice the increase in fastball MPH. By throwing in the low-90's, Vazquez' off-speed pitches now become a lot more effective. He's clearly in better form than his overall numbers and should be a decent matchup against free-swinging Houston tonight.

MLB Handicapping: Umpire Crew P continues to churn out Unders

07.08.2011     11:09 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Back in early June we pointed out that the foursome (known as Crew P) of James Hoye, Bill Miller, Phil Cuzzi and Tom Hallion were all trending heavily towards the Under. Since then, though not as dramatic, the group continues to churn out profits with a 10-12-1 O/U mark. Overall, Crew P is an amazing 21-41-3 O/U on the season (Hoye 4-10, Cuzzi 5-11-3, Hallion 6-9 and Miller 6-11) and 581-727 O/U lifetime, good for 55.6%. Hoye will be behind the plate in Kansas City tonight.

Arizona (Kennedy) at St. Louis (Lohse)
Recommendation: Under 4 1st five innings

Arizona and St. Louis meet for the second game in their series after a 4-1 Arizona win last night.  Both starters looked solid on Thursday limiting both sides to just nine hits.  Tonight we get another solid pitching matchup with Ian Kennedy against Kyle Lohse.  Both starters have been somewhat of a surprise this season as Kennedy is 8-3 with a 3.38 ERA and Lohse has done more than his part for the Cards with an 8-5 record and 2.97 ERA.  Both starters also sport WHIPs under 1.15.  Arizona's bullpen has pitched 23.2 innings in seven games in seven days while the Cardinal bullpen has labored as well with 27.1 innings over 10 straight days/games.  I believe the smart play here is to take the 5-inning line and leave the bullpens out of the equation; not to mention both bullpens are in the bottom third of the league in ERA. Count on Kennedy and Lohse to get us through a clean first five.

MLB Betting Trends: Texas has pounded left-handed starters at home

07.08.2011     06:38 AM     Printer Friendly
Oakland (Gonzalez) at Texas (Wilson) -155 O/U 8.5

A fairly strong trend brewing in Texas when opposing teams send a left-handed starter to the hill. In 13 such instances, 12 went over the total and Texas posted a 10-3 record. The list of pitchers isn't exactly loaded with premium arms, but only John Danks and the White Sox could hold the Rangers to below five runs. Tonight, Texas plays host to Oakland with southpaw Gio Gonzalez slated to start. Last season, Gonzalez posted a 3.94 ERA in three starts at Rangers Ballpark. Back in May, he allowed two runs in 6.2 innings in a 7-2 win in Oakland.
