College Football Betting: Florida International is probably going to be awful

08.28.2013     06:18 AM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Florida International at Maryland -22 O/U 49.5

You don't have to be a seasoned veteran to spot that Florida International is in for a world of hurt this season. The decision to remove Mario Cristobal and bring in Ron Turner has the potential to be on the Dan Hawkins-to-Colorado or Ellis Johnson-to-Southern Miss level. At 60 years old, with little to no track record of success at the college level (35-57 career record), Turner all of a sudden walks into a dicey situation where there is actually work to be done. The Panthers return only eight starters and are stepping up in class from the Sun Belt to C-USA. I'm obviously not the only one that has caught a whiff of this rotting corpse of a program. Last season, with 17 returning starters and off a program high 8-win season, FIU was catching +3 at Duke. This year, they Read more

NCAA Football Gambling: Louisiana Tech's Holtz tries to embrace unknowns

Louisiana Tech at NC State -13.5 O/U 62.5

Here's the transcript of Louisiana Tech head coach Skip Holtz's weekly press conference. There are a lot of good nuggets and Holtz isn’t shy about his team’s youth and inexperience.

"I think this is going to be a great learning curve for us. How it is going to play out with two new head coaches and a lot of unknowns in this game with new guys playing in this game on both sides of the ball. I think for us right now, it is all about putting our best foot forward and putting our best team out there Saturday and see where we are.

"They say the progress you make from game one to game two is normally the biggest jump you are going to make as a football team, so for me, I am excited to watch this team play. I am

College Football Handicapping: Colorado looks to go up-tempo

08.27.2013     01:56 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article on Colorado first-year head coach Mike MacIntyre's no-huddle, spread offense. At San Jose State, MacIntyre's offense averaged 446.2 ypg and 70 plays per game in 2012. But that was his third year on the job. In his first season, the Spartans averaged 315.1 ypg (101st nationally). As always, be sure to take a wait-and-see approach with these lower-tier BCS conference schools with poor defenses trying to make a go of it with up-tempo systems.

"I would like to think it's pretty modern with a little tradition mixed in," CU offensive coordinator Brian Lindgren said. "It's a good mix."

"I've always kind of described it as a multiple no-huddle, meaning that we don't just stay in one personnel group," Lindgren said. "We'll move personnel groups but we're doing it from a no huddle. We'll mix some shifts and motions in and you can kind of see different blends and elements. Some pro-style elements, some spread elements to it. I like to be multiple because we can take advantage of what we've got

College Football Betting: Offensive line concerns for Ball State

08.27.2013     08:05 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Offensive line concerns for Ball State with the team's lone returning starter, Jordan Hansel, questionable for Thursday's season opener against Illinois State (No. 10 preseason FCS). The Cardinals graduated four senior starters (14 sacks allowed) and if Hansel doesn't play, the unit will be down to just seven career starts. Note that Ball State has a rather tame schedule to open the season with Illinois State, Army, North Texas, and Eastern Michigan.

Mississippi State vs. Oklahoma State -12.5 O/U 60

Injury of note as Oklahoma State starting tackle Devin Davis tore his ACL and is expected to miss the entire season. The Cowboys came into 2013 having lost three senior o-linemen who started multiple games. Davis started two games last year leaving OSU with only 36 returning career starts.

College Football Betting: USC will play two quarterbacks vs. Hawaii

USC -21.5 at Hawaii O/U 53.5

Here we are with yet another team determined to start the season with a two quarterback system. According to USC head coach Lane Kiffin Max Wittek and Cody Kessler will both see time during Thursday's game at Hawaii.

"That really is how well both guys did," Kiffin told reporters after practice. "For us, we look at it as a great thing. We've got two guys that we feel great about. We don't feel like we have to limit our offense with either one of them in there."

"They've both done so well, made so many plays," Kiffin said. "It didn't show itself that one guy was above the other guy, so we do it all the time with other positions. We're not going to be stubborn and name a starter just because we're

College Football Handicapping: Estimated Power Ratings as of 8/26/13

08.26.2013     02:08 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Submitted by Stat Intelligence

We’ve seen some early week line movements for the debut of college football in 2013 this Thursday. I’ve tweaked our estimated Power Ratings from a few weeks ago as a result.

The numbers you see below assume 3 points for home field advantage. I create a couplet for each game based on the market spread adjusted for home field (or, left alone in the case of neutral site games), then try to place that couplet on “the big board” scale. So…if a team is a 12-point favorite on a neutral field, I make sure those teams are 12 points apart…then try to figure out where they would logically sit in the big picture based on last year’s final numbers…offseason changes…early numbers in the “game of the year” stuff in Vegas for upcoming matchups…etc. If a team is a 12-point favorite at home, then I make sure those teams are 9 points apart.

College Football Gambling Preview: LSU Tigers vs. TCU Horned Frogs

LSU vs. TCU
Marty Otto's Recommendation:
LSU
Saturday, 6 pm PT - ESPN (at Cowboys Stadium)
CRIS Opener:
LSU -3 O/U 50.5
CRIS Current: LSU -4 O/U 50

This is one of the marquee games of college football’s opening week and it’s being played on a monster stage. It’s Saturday night, on ESPN primetime, at massive Cowboys Stadium. The Tigers currently find themselves as 4-point favorites and I wouldn’t expect them to go off at anything less than that number barring a major suspension or injury.

Coaching
Les Miles enters his ninth season as head coach at LSU. His teams have managed to win at least 10 games in each of the last three years and in six of his previous eight seasons. John Chavis remains as the defensive coordinator. Cam Cameron is the new offensive coordinator after a long stint in the NFL.

TCU head coach Gary Patterson has been at the helm for 13 years Read more
