College Basketbal Betting Free Play: Furman Paladins at SMU Mustangs

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Furman at SMU -14
Recommendation: SMU

Furman is a bottom of the barrel squad with just one win over DI competition – 81-57 at home vs. Presbyterian (339th). In their eight other games, the Paladins lost by margins of 17, 14, 14, 24, 12, 21, 27, 27. The 12-point margin you see was against Jacksonville who like Presbyterian, is south of 300 according Ken Pom's ranking. So in this spot, essentially Furman is being asked to go on the road and be at least somewhat competitive against a somewhat decent squad. The Mustangs beat Loyola Marymount by 15 and Rider by 13 – two quality teams. And their last two games against sub-part competition they beat Hosftra by 26 and Alcorn State by 15 – both games away from home. At home off the holiday break, SMU gets a weak opponent it can easily handle. Lay the points.

Music City Bowl Betting Preview: NC State Wolfpack vs. Vanderbilt Commodores

Music City Bowl – Nashville, Tenn.
Monday, December 31, 9 am PT – ESPN
NC State vs. Vanderbilt
CRIS Opener:
Vanderbilt -6.5 O/U 51.5
CRIS Current: Vanderbilt -7 O/U 51.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Vanderbilt -5

Fundamentally, Vanderbilt is deserving of being a touchdown favorite in Monday's Music City Bowl against NC State. The Commodores sport the significantly stronger defense and are actually not that far removed from the Wolfpack offensively. NC State can sling it around with quarterback Mike Glennon but have had difficulty running the football (109th, 116.9 ypg). And Glennon isn't much of a runner which suggests if NC State is going to compete, they'll have to have a lot of success in the passing game. Statistics tells us that won't be easy. According to our ACCU-Stats, Vanderbilt ranks 10th in the country in yards per pass allowed. I go back to their Read more

Pinstripe Bowl Betting Preview: West Virginia Mountaineers vs. Syracuse Orange

Pinstripe Bowl - Bronx, NY
Saturday, December 29, 12:15 pm PT - ESPN2
West Virginia vs. Syracuse
CRIS Opener:
West Virginia -3.5 O/U 73.5
CRIS Current: West Virginia -3.5 O/U 71.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: West Virginia -4.5

Who is going to force more than two punts is the general feeling most bettors have heading into Saturday’s Pinstripe Bowl. I don't see either team with a significant motivational edge. Syracuse is obviously pleased to being playing in the postseason and within proximity to the venue. West Virginia may not be as giddy but I do give the Mountaineers credit for not completely packing it in the final few weeks of the regular season. They also have a little bit of revenge on their minds as these two teams met last season and Syracuse cruised to a 49-23 win as 14-point home underdogs. And in 2010, Syracuse again came up aces against the Mountaineers, Read more

Belk Bowl Gambling Preview: Cincinnati Bearcats vs. Duke Blue Devils

Belk Bowl - Charlotte, NC
Thursday, December 27, 3:30 pm PT - ESPN
Cincinnati vs. Duke
CRIS Opener:
Cincinnati -10 O/U 58
CRIS Current: Cincinnati -9 O/U 60.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Cincinnati -9.5

The way Duke ended the regular season presents an interesting situation for tonight's Belt Bowl matchup against Cincinnati. Two months ago, the Blue Devils got to six wins and clinched their first postseason berth since 1961. And not only that but they did so against in-state rival North Carolina who at the time was trending upwards after wins over Virginia Tech and Miami (FL). Duke's resume leading up to that victory wasn't eye-popping. A vast majority of BCS conference schools would have notched wins over Florida International, Memphis, NC Central, Wake Forest, and Virginia. And when asked to step up in class, the Blue Devils were blown out at Stanford and blew 20-0 lead against Read more

Military Bowl Betting Preview: Bowling Green Falcons vs. San Jose State Spartans

Thursday, December 27, Noon PT - ESPN
Bowling Green vs. San Jose State
CRIS Opener:
San Jose State -7.5 O/U 47
CRIS Current: San Jose State -7 (-115) O/U 44.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: San Jose State -7

San Jose State put together an impressive season. They kicked it off with a three-point loss at Stanford and scored wins over bowl-bound teams San Diego State, Navy, and BYU. They also defeated a nine-win Louisiana Tech squad. The only blemish was a 22-point home loss to Utah State who proved to be the class of the WAC. San Jose’s late season wins over BYU and Louisiana Tech were however a little sketchy. The week leading up to the game, the Cougars accepted their bowl berth and being independent had nothing to play for. And Tech was off a devastating home loss to Utah State and forced to travel cross country.  Still, the overall body of work was so impressive Read more

Duquesne at -ULLafayette -3
Recommendation: Louisiana-Lafayette

I think this is a difficult spot for Duquesne as they make an isolated road trip to UL-Lafayette before the holiday break. The Dukes are a talented but young squad that relies heavily of three-point shooting. With the exception of a 34.6% effort from three at Appalachian State (2-8), the Dukes have shot 27%, 25%, 24%, 18% and 17% from deep away from home. And of those five games, four featured 41% FG shooting or less. Also a concern should be their performance from that charity stripe with a season average of 62%. Lafayette is also very young but has had a few performances that suggest they are capable. Earlier in the year they lost by six at Boise State and lost by three at Michigan State. Last time out, they had a five-point lead in the second half against a quality Robert Morris squad but ended up falling short 66-61. Note that Robert Morris beat Duquesne by 22 two weeks ago. The Cajun Dome is Read more

New Orleans Bowl Betting Preview: East Carolina Pirates vs. UL-Lafayette Ragin Cajuns

New Orleans Bowl

East Carolina vs. Louisiana-Lafayette
CRIS Opener:
UL-Lafayette -4.5 O/U 63
CRIS Current: UL-Lafayette -5 O/U 65.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: UL-Lafayette -4.5

UL-Lafayette makes its second straight trip to the New Orleans bowl after defeating San Diego State 32-30 as 6-point underdogs last season. It was a pro Ragin' Cajuns crowd but the Superdome was only about half full and East Carolina should travel much better than the Aztecs. ECU returns to the postseason after finishing 5-7 last year. They were blown out by Maryland, 51-20, in the 2010 Military Bowl.

The turning point for UL-Lafayette was its road win over UL-Monroe. They benefited from the Warhawks losing quarterback Kolton Browning to injury late in the first half, but it was still a significant victory. The following week they nearly Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Oakland Grizzlies at West Virginia Mountaineers

Oakland at West Virginia -11.5 O/U 146.5
Recommendation: West Virginia

Reading the quotes from Bobby Huggins, practice probably wasn't easy for the Mountaineers this week. Various players are in the dog house while others were called out for not putting in extra work. This team has plenty of issues but the biggest one is not being able to put the ball in the bucket. Their effective FG% ranks 318th nationally while they are hitting less than 27% of their threes. Now this isn't the type of team that is going to shoot 50% from the floor on a consistent basis but there will be nights when the shots do fall. Entire the Oakland Grizzlies who don’t play a lick of defense. They sport the second worst 2-point FG% defense in the country at 61.1%. That means WVU should have plenty of easy looks and not be forced to rely on outside shots. The Grizzlies have also had a difficult time stepping up in class on the road. With the exception of the 10-point overtime Read more
