Cleveland (Kluber) +100 at Tampa Bay (Odorizzi) O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Cleveland

I'll take the better starting pitcher in this matchup with Cleveland's Corey Kluber taking on Tampa Bay's Jake Odorizzi. Kluber is quietly developing into a top-of-the-rotation American League arm with the ability to miss bats and get groundballs. Since the start of 2013, Kluber's xFIP ranks sixth among qualified AL starting pitchers at 3.10. I was a fan of Odorizzi to start the season but have since cooled my stance after watching a few of his starts. Unlike Kluber, Odorizzi doesn't have swing and miss stuff and thus far he's been an extreme fly ball pitcher. A telltale sign these struggles could continue is that teams are 29-for-61, .475 the second and third time through the order. Also note that Odorizzi hasn't lasted past five innings since his first start of the year; putting extra pressure on a very questionable Rays' bullpen. Both offenses have scuffled of late which makes the starting pitching Read more

MLB Handicapping: Doug Eddings still churning out UNDERS at a high rate

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With all of the technological advancements in MLB – most notably QuesTec – we don't see many umpires stray too far from "neutral" when it comes to totals beyond a one or two-year sample. Tim McClelland (over ump) is out for the year and John Hirschbeck (under ump) has missed time due to the death of his son. But there are a few umps that bettors should still be aware of when behind the dish, in particular veteran Doug Eddings. Not including pushes, Eddings had produced 57% unders out of nearly 500 career games. And despite the evolution of the game over the last decade, he's been very consistent. Out of the last 11 seasons, Eddings has trended "over" the total just once – heavily assisted by a 7-1 O/U mark in games lined 7 or less. This season he's been extremely pitcher friendly with a 1-5 O/U record and a ridiculous 105-21 K-to-BB ratio. In six games behind the dish, there have been an average of 5 runs per game, and his strike percentage is 65.4%. Umpire trends can at times be random – favorable/unfavorable pitching matchups, weather, stadiums, etc. But Eddings has a proven track record and a few borderline calls through a game as Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Chicago White Sox at Cleveland Indians

Chicago WS (Carroll) at Cleveland (Masterson) -160 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Over

After scoring only 13 runs on their recent 0-6 road trip the Cleveland Indians broke out the sticks last night with 12 runs in a win over the White Sox. More production projected tonight as the White Sox sent career minor leaguer Scott Carroll. At 29 years old and a high 80's fastball from the right side, Carroll appears to be another Philip Humber. He threw well in his first start (7.1 IP, 1 ER) vs. Tampa but fanned only three batters and had a grand total of two swinging strikes. Also worth mentioning that during Carroll’s long minor league career, lefties have hit a startling .301 against him. Cleveland's Justin Masterson continues to struggle with his mechanics and velocity. And playing behind a poor infield defense can at times negate his groundball ways. A few weeks ago, Masterson was hammered for five earned runs in 4.2 innings against the White Sox. Chicago leads the American League in runs, Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Baltimore Orioles at Minnesota Twins

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Baltimore (Jimenez) at Minnesota (Nolasco) -110 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Minnesota

Ubaldo Jimenez remains an easy fade due to his reduced velocity and lack of command. In 27.1 innings, Jimenez has walked 17 batters and he's averaged only six swinging strikes per game (a 6% rate vs. 8% in 2013). And if walks are going to be an issue, Minnesota isn't a good matchup as the Twins lead the American League with 133 walks and rank second in on-base percentage. Meanwhile Ricky Nolasco toes the rubber for the Twins. Nolasco's overall numbers would make most bettors squirm but his groundball rate is actually a career best 50.5% – he's suffered some due to a sky-high .355 BABIP. Also note that of Nolasco's five starts only one has been in the pitcher friendly confines of Target Field and it was without question his best start of the year (8 IP, 1 ER vs. Kansas City). Also in our favor is the potential fatigue factor with Baltimore playing a double-header at home yesterday – the last Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: San Diego Padres at Washington Nationals

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
San Diego (Cashner) at Washington (Roark) -115 O/U 7
Recommendation: Under

Two of the weaker offenses in baseball, a pitcher's park, two solid starting pitchers, and Doug Eddings behind the dish point us towards the under in this afternoon's San Diego-Washington game. The Padres have scored the fewest runs in the National League...by 14. Even on the road, it is always a fight for this team to get to three runs. In 24 games, San Diego has topped three runs only seven times and three out of 11 on the highway. Washington's Tanner Roark is nothing special but in this spacious park, if he keeps the ball down he'll deliver a quality outing. Washington's offense is much stronger but they run into Andrew Cashner who coming from the right ride is a far better matchup vs. the Nats than lefty Robbie Erlin who got smacked around yesterday. And lastly all four of Eddings’ games this year have gone under (avg. 3.5 runs per game). Last game he was behind the dish (4/22 Fernandez vs. Wood) Read more
