MLB Handicapper Free Play: Tampa Bay Rays at Detroit Tigers

Tampa Bay (Price) -115 at Detroit (Porcello) O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Under

Quietly, Detroit Rick Porcello is on pace for a fifth consecutive season of lowering his ERA. This year's numbers are good (3.12 ERA, 3.82 xFIP) even though he's doing it with some smoke-and-mirrors. His K rate is down from 7.22 to 5.22 and despite years of high BABIPs behind a porous infield defense, all of a sudden it's at .266. Last time out was perhaps the most mind-blowing outing of the year as Porcello hung a complete game shutout on the A's despite not fanning a single batter. Porcello is a very interesting case study because he's proven capable of success by pitching to contact but at some point the numbers will flatten out some. Tampa's David Price has been very Porcello-esque of late (2.12 ERA L6 starts) but he goes about it in a much different manner with 63 Ks in his last 46.2 innings. It is that ability to miss bats (and avoid the "due for regression" numbers) that has Price a road Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Texas Rangers at New York Mets

Texas (Lewis) at NY Mets (Colon) -130 O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Under

The stats aren't good for Texas' Colby Lewis as he sports a 5.71 ERA through 14 trips to the hill. And it wasn't until last time out that he recorded his first quality start of the season. But off back-to-back decent efforts (14 Ks, 0 BBs, 12.1 IP) Lewis walks into a favorable situation tonight in New York. For starters, the Mets will serve as one of the worst offense Lewis has faced this season – particularly at Citi Field were they are hitting .223/.649. And Citi Field will be a huge relief as Lewis sports a 6.54 ERA in Texas. Bartolo Colon continues to defy logic with fastballs that bend every which way. Over his last eight starts he sports a 2.20 ERA. Texas is no longer the offensive juggernaut they once were. In fact, only a few statistics suggest they are even American League average. Ultimately though, this game comes down to who is behind the dish, and that, bettors, is Mr. Doug Eddings. Eddings is one of the Read more

Cleveland (Bauer) at LA Dodgers (Ryu) -150 O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Under

If you've read these pages before you know that I am a big fan of Cleveland’s Trevor Bauer who is starting to show more consistency to go along with his swing-and-miss stuff. I think he'll benefit from pitching in a National League park this afternoon as well as it being the Dodgers first-ever look at the hard throwing righty. Hyun-Jin Ryu has been as consistent as they come churning out quality start after quality start this season. Asian pitchers are notoriously tough in first-look situations as not one current Indians player has an AB vs. Ryu. The Tribe has also had a difficult time hitting lefties this season with .244/.313/.350/.663 splits hence their 10-16 record vs. southpaws. This is a true getaway day situation with the afternoon start, LA headed to Colorado, and Cleveland with an off day on Thursday before returning home for a 10-game homestand. Let's play this one UNDER the total.

Colorado (De La Rosa) at Milwaukee (Gallardo)
Recommendation: See analysis

Three starts ago, Colorado's Jorge De La Rosa left early due to some sort of back issue and yet the Rockies continue to throw him on regular rest due to a depleted staff. Over those three starts (two of the three away from Coors), De La Rosa has allowed 20 hits, 13 runs, and shows an ugly 7-7 K-to-BB ratio. And while he's away from Coors this afternoon, he faces the powerful right-hand heavy lineup of Milwaukee – De La Rosa of course much weaker vs. the right-handed bat (.275 BAA, .808 OPS). Simply put, he isn't right and I've been active in finding ways to fade him. Yovanni Gallardo has been under-the-radar this season as he no longer flashes top-tier stuff. But the results have been solid (3.23 ERA, 3.62 xFIP). He's changed his arsenal some and it has resulted in a career-best 53.3% groundball rate. I still think Gallarado has been fortunate based on the diminished stuff but he’s obviously a more Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Atlanta Braves at Philadelphia Phillies

Atlanta (Santana) -115 at Philadelphia (Hernandez) O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Over

Atlanta's Ervin Santana's overall body of work is solid but we've see the boost of moving from the American League to National League wear off some of late. And not only is the league starting to catch up to Santana but he's showing some absolutely wicked R vs. L splits. Against righties, he's absolutely lights out with a 3.64 K/BB ratio, .210 BAA, and .560 OPS. Against lefties a much different story with a 2.31 K/BB ratio, .335 BAA, .946 OPS. And based on what I saw on the lineup card for today, the Phillies' first seven hitters will come from the left side. So with this being Philly's third look at Santana (second in less than a week), it appears they are in good position to plate some runs this afternoon. Roberto Hernandez's numbers are right in line with who he is as a pitcher at this stage in his career. The 4.41 ERA is real and so is the ugly 62-to-42 K/BB ratio in 79.2 innings of work. Read more
