MLB Handicapper Free Play: Milwaukee Brewers at Colorado Rockies

Milwaukee (Estrada) +100 at Colorado (Bergman) O/U 10.5
Recommendation: Milwaukee

Colorado's Christian Bergman is 2-for-2 in the quality start department but there is plenty to be concerned with. For starters, he's a soft-tossing right hander who needs pinpoint control in order to succeed. In 554 minor league innings, Bergman fanned only 385 batters. Second, he's already showing signs of being a fly ball pitcher which is obviously a bad thing in Coors Field. In two starts, he's allowed 30 fly balls and 17 line drives. At home against Atlanta, he managed to keep everything in the park but the box score shows five "deep" fly outs. It’s all a matter of time before the home run ball becomes an issue and Bergman ultimately gets sent back down. Milwaukee’s Marco Estrada is the poster child for "extreme fly ball pitcher" with a ridiculous 18.7% HR/FB rate – a stat that has nowhere to go but down. But when Estrada does keep the ball in the yard, he's been Read more

Colorado (Matzek) +170 at LA Dodgers (Ryu) O/U 7
Recommendation: Colorado

Hyun-Jin Ryu's overall numbers look good (3.33 ERA, 2.90 FIP) but since returning from injury he's been hit around some and faced a very favorable schedule with games against the Mets, Reds (twice), and the Pirates. In two starts against Colorado, Ryu allowed 17 hits in 11 IP with only five strikeouts. I've also noticed a small drop in velocity with Ryu. The Rockies will be getting a third look against him and should be able to plate some runs. Colorado rookie Tyler Matzek looked very good in his MLB debut – 7 IP, 2 ERs, and 7 Ks in Coors Field against Atlanta. I'm a big fan of first-time lefties and while the Dodgers do have right-handed power, Matzek at night in Dodgers Stadium presents a good opportunity for success. Ultimately this is a value play. Ryu is being priced as a dominant starter vs. a lower-tier pitcher and team but I don't think that is the case. The Rockies aren't the same team away from Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Kansas City Royals at Chicago White Sox

Kansas City (Duffy) at Chicago WS (Noesi) -110 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Chicago

I don't think Chicago's Hector Noesi is as bad as his overall numbers (5.40 ERA) suggest. Remember, this guy is pitching for this third team this season which isn't exactly ideal for one's psyche. Now that he's settled in on the South Side, it appears that White Sox pitching coach/guru Don Cooper has made an impact with Noesi who shows a solid 3.86 ERA over his last seven starts. And it should be pointed out that if you take away two outings against powerful Detroit, Noesi has been nearly automatic in the quality start department. Bottom line is he’s a 6 IP, 3/4 ER guy but with the potential to be far better this afternoon facing one of the worst offenses in the American League. Kansas City's Danny Duffy is slowly getting back into form after arm problems cut short his 2013 season. At times Duffy has been effective but he's also flashing numerous red flags. For starters his K per 9 rate is a modest Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Colorado Rockies at San Francisco Giants

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Colorado (De La Rosa) +125 at San Francisco (Lincecum) O/U 7
Recommendation: Colorado

Tim Linceum has had a wild season with performances ranging from stellar to awful. We've seen a 12 strikeout, 24 swinging strike performance as well as an 8 earned run, 4 swinging strike performance. All told there isn't much fluky about his near 5.00 season ERA. And the schedule has been generous with eight of his 13 starts at home as well as starts against weak hitting St. Louis, Cincinnati, Chicago, New York, and San Diego. Colorado's Jorge De La Rosa meanwhile has been rock solid. After a rough start to the season he's settled down and produced a 2.78 ERA over his last 10 starts – six of those at Coors Field. And the four outings on the highway were stellar with 25 IP and only six earned runs. The value on this play stems from San Francisco's unsustainable start to the season and Colorado's well documented home/road splits. That has driven the price in this game to above -135 when the Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Houston Astros at Minnesota Twins

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Houston (Keuchel) at Minnesota (Hughes) -120 O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Under

At the start of the season, if you were to someone that Phil Hughes and Dallas Keuchel would be ranked 8th and 12th respectively in WAR among starting pitchers you would have been laughed at an accused of being drunk. But littered among all of the league's big names and arms are two unassuming guys that have figured out how to succeed at a high level. Hughes' story centers on throwing strikes and avoiding the home run ball. Clearly with Hughes pitching in Target Field as oppose to Yankee Stadium helps. It's led to a sparkling 3.12 ERA and 2.59 FIP. Keuchel goes about it in similar fashion ? miss a fair amount of bats (64 Ks in 76.2 IP) and keep the walks (15 BBs) and home runs (4) to a minimum. As a result, he currently flashes a 2.70 ERA and nearly identical 2.74 FIP. While the Twins and Astros have shown an ability to plate runs we're still dealing with two below average AL offenses in a pitcher friend park Read more
