New Orleans Bowl
Saturday, December 22, 9 am PT - ESPN
East Carolina vs. Louisiana-Lafayette
CRIS Opener:
UL-Lafayette -4.5 O/U 63
CRIS Current: UL-Lafayette -5 O/U 65.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: UL-Lafayette -4.5

UL-Lafayette makes its second straight trip to the New Orleans bowl after defeating San Diego State 32-30 as 6-point underdogs last season. It was a pro Ragin' Cajuns crowd but the Superdome was only about half full and East Carolina should travel much better than the Aztecs. ECU returns to the postseason after finishing 5-7 last year. They were blown out by Maryland, 51-20, in the 2010 Military Bowl.

The turning point for UL-Lafayette was its road win over UL-Monroe. They benefited from the Warhawks losing quarterback Kolton Browning to injury late in the first half, but it was still a significant victory. The following week they nearly Read more

Las Vegas Bowl
Saturday, December 22, 12:30 pm PT - ESPN
Washington at Boise State
CRIS Opener:
Boise State -5.5 O/U 46.5
CRIS Current: Boise State-5.5 O/U 44.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Boise State -2.5

It's hard to imagine Washington practicing and getting ready for this bowl game with much enthusiasm after losing its last game of the season 31-28 to in state and PAC-12 Conference rival Washington State as a 14.5-point favorite. The team and coaching staff were embarrassed and must now game plan for Boise State a team who has been to and prepared for 11 straight bowl games including back-to-back Las Vegas Bowl winners. They won and covered both of those games defeating Arizona State 56-24 last year and beating Utah 26-3 in 2010. The Broncos are 4-0 in their last four bowl games straight up and against the spread.

CRIS Current: Fresno State -12.5 O/U 59.5
Rob Veno’s Power Rating: Fresno State -11

It was another up and down season for head coach June Jones the SMU Mustangs. They were the perfect definition of mediocre at 6-6 overall and 5-3 in C-USA play. They won back-to-back games only once but by all reports are motivated and excited to be traveling to the island for the Hawaii Bowl to take on the Fresno State. Jones on his team’s postseason berth: "Having been affiliated with this bowl since its inception, I know that it is one of the best bowl experiences in college football. I'm very excited for our players, staff and fans. This is a special experience." SMU has been to three previous bowl games under Jones going 2-1 SU Read more

Beef O'Brady's Bowl Betting Preview: Ball State Cardinals vs. Central Florida Knights

Beef O'Brady's Bowl - St. Petersburg, Fla.
Friday, December 21, 4:30 pm PT - ESPN
Ball State vs. Central Florida
CRIS Opener:
Central Florida -7.5 O/U 63
CRIS Current: Central Florida -7 (-115) O/U 62
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Central Florida -8

There’s an interesting but not uncommon dilemma for Ball State heading into this contest. Some players have openly addressed the very disjointed schedule they’ve been on since their regular season finale against Miami (OH). Final exams, the long layoff between games, sporadic practices, coaches intermittent appearances on campus due to recruiting trips, and talk of hitting the beach are all distractions from Ball State’s normal in-season routine. However, when you get down to the root of the team mindsets for this game it seems pretty clear. This invite is a great post season prize for Ball State and a Read more

Poinsettia Bowl Betting Preview: BYU Cougars vs. San Diego State Aztecs

Poinsettia Bowl - San Diego, Calif.
Thursday, December 20, 5 pm PT - ESPN
BYU vs. San Diego State
CRIS Opener:
BYU -3 O/U 50
CRIS Current: BYU -3 O/U 48
Rob Veno's Power Rating: BYU -3

This was somewhat of a down year for BYU off last year's 10-3 season as Bronco Mendenhall's squad found more ways to lose tight games than to win them. Four of their five losses came by six points or less, and the lone blowout defeat (at the hands of Oregon State) was a tight game into the fourth quarter before things got ugly. Much of their mediocrity can be blamed on quarterback injuries and ineffectiveness.

Mendenhall has not yet named a starter for the bowl game, and he's not expected to choose between multi-year starter Riley Nelson and late season sensation James Lark until game day. Lark, a senior, was buried on the QB depth chart for most of his career, but he started the Read more

Central Michigan vs. Western Kentucky
CRIS Opener:
Western Kentucky -6 O/U 60
CRIS Current: Western Kentucky -5.5 O/U 58.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Western Kentucky -9

In what might be a rare situation this college bowl season we’ve got a game featuring two teams that figure to be “hungry” to partake in the Little Caesar’s Pizza Bowl. Western Kentucky will be playing in its first ever bowl game while Central Michigan gets a short trip to Detroit which represents its first bowl appearance since 2009.

The stadium certainly won’t be sold out but a decent turnout is expected to add a little flavor here. CMU has a large alumni base in the Detroit area and the short drive for current students and fans should make an attractive destination for a Read more

Potato Bowl Betting Preview: Toledo Rockets vs. Utah State Aggies

Famous Idaho Potato Bowl - Boise, Idaho
Saturday, December 15, 1:30 pm PT - ESPN
Toledo vs. Utah State
CRIS Opener:
Utah State -10 O/U 57.5
CRIS Closer: Utah State -10 O/U 58.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Utah State -14.5

For as dynamic as the offense was at times, Utah State's season was defined by its defense. The schedule wasn't tough (92nd SOS) but only twice (vs. San Jose and Louisiana Tech) did the Aggies allow more than five yards per play. Note that they played a majority of those two contests with a significant lead. Toledo meanwhile wasn't nearly as proficient. The Rockets’ SOS was worse at 106th and yet they allowed 5.33 yards per play or more in every game but one – the season finale against a completely gassed Akron squad. Clearly, one team has the ability to force punts while the other does not.

From an ACCU-Stat perspective, Utah State again Read more

New Mexico Bowl - Albuquerque, NM

Nevada vs. Arizona
CRIS Opener:
Arizona -9 O/U 76
CRIS Current: Arizona -9 O/U 77
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Arizona -11.5

Run through all 70 bowl teams and you’d have a hard time coming up with many worse than Arizona when it comes to stopping the competition. However, it appears the Wildcats lucked out by drawing Nevada in this year’s New Mexico Bowl. Of teams playing in the postseason, only Baylor was worse than the Wolf Pack at stopping teams on third down. Keep in mind the Bears played the 4th toughest schedule in the country, while Nevada played the 113th. And in looking at Nevada’s schedule, only Fresno State compares to Arizona from a yards-per-game perspective and the Bulldogs hung 52 on the Wolf Pack.

The turning point in Nevada's season was the overtime loss to San Read more

Nebraska vs. Wisconsin
Saturday, 5 pm PT, Indianapolis – FOX
CRIS Opener:
Nebraska -3 O/U 49
CRIS Current: Nebraska -3 O/U 49
Rob Veno’s Power Rating: Wisconsin pk

The Badgers are back in the Big Ten title game this season after beating Michigan State last year 42-39 and advancing to the Rose Bowl.  This year’s edition of Wisconsin football is a far cry from last year’s dream season with quarterback Russell Wilson.  In fact, the Badgers backed into the title game due to Ohio State and Penn State being ineligible.  Meanwhile, the Cornhuskers will be excited to play in the second ever Big Ten Championship.  The Huskers do have a history of playing in conference title games having reached the Big XII’s version as recently as 2009 and 2010.

The Badgers were expected to take a step back in 2012 and they certainly did.  Still, not many expected a 7-5 Read more

Rob Veno's Power Rating: Tulsa -1.5

In what will be their swan song as part of Conference-USA, the UCF Knights will look to exit with the league crown as they travel to Tulsa to battle the Golden Hurricane in Saturday’s conference title game.

UCF wasn’t sure earlier this season if they’d even get the chance to participate in a bowl game. They were banned from bowl participation in August due to recruiting violations but the school elected to appeal the ruling and their fate won’t be decided until next season. The Knights finished 9-3 and 7-1 in C-USA play with their lone conference loss coming against Tulsa on this field a few weeks back, 23-21. Tulsa squeaked out the pointspread cover as a 1-point home and the game stayed under the total of 54. Tulsa finished with Read more
