College Football Betting Preview: Illinois Fighting Illini at Nebraska Cornhuskers

Illinois at Nebraska
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - BTN
CRIS Opener:
Nebraska -21 O/U 55.5
CRIS Current: Nebraska -21 O/U 54
Recommendation: Nebraska

It's homecoming Weekend in Lincoln as the Nebraska Cornhuskers play host to Illinois. Nebraska improved to 4-0 after a 24-13 victory at Northwestern last week. With the win, Nebraska entered the AP ranking at No. 20 for the first time since the end of the 2014 season. Quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr. had a monster game, picking up a 379 total yards while running back Terell Newby chipped in 69 yards and a touchdown.

Illinois is coming off a bye week after dropping a 34-10 decision to Western Michigan. The Broncos outrushed the Illini by a whopping 287-3 margin. Despite efforts in the first two games to spark their rushing attack, Lovie Smith's squad attempted 43 passes compared to 10 rushes due to playing from behind the entire game. Smith clearly has his work cut out for him moving forward. In blowout losses to North Carolina and Western Michigan, the Illini were outgained 899-624 (7.3 ypp-4.8 ypp). It's not a positive sign considering the Illini Read more

College Football Handicapping: Penn State defense hammered by injuries

09.28.2016     09:00 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Couple injuries of note for Saturday's Minnesota-Penn State game. Golden Gophers defensive end Tai'yon Devers is reportedly out (Sports Options lists him as questionable). Devers has three of the team's nine sacks this season. Meanwhile, the Nittany Lions are down to a stop sign and two lawn chairs at linebacker. The unit was exposed and some against Michigan as the Wolverines rushed for 326 yards. Three weeks ago, Pitt rushed for 341 yards. Penn State is currently a -3 home favorite.

"In my 22 years of doing this, I've never been a part of a team that's lost all three of our starting linebackers," Franklin said. "I've been around teams that have lost this guy for a game or lost this guy for two games or lost this guy maybe for a season, but to lose all of them for a significant amount of time at the same time, I've never been a part of that."

College Football Betting Preview: Wisconsin Badgers at Michigan State Spartans

Wisconsin at Michigan State
Saturday, 9 am PT - BTN
CRIS Opener:
Michigan State -6 O/U 45.5
CRIS Current: Michigan State -5 O/U 42
Recommendation: Michigan State

What on earth does Michigan State have to do to earn some real respect from the betting markets?   This team went 13-1 in 2013, 11-2 in 2014 and 12-2 last year, rising to elite program status in Mark D’Antonio’s tenth year on the job. But the Spartans suffered some significant graduation losses in the offseason, especially on offense where QB Connor Cook and three of the linemen protecting him went to the NFL.  And then Michigan State looked sluggish in their opener against Furman, never even sniffing the -37.5 point spread in a 28-13 victory.  The betting markets, as they do, dramatically overreacted to that sluggish showing, installing the Spartans as 7.5 point underdogs at Notre Dame last week.  They dominated wire-to-wire in a ‘not as close as the final score’ 36-28 romp.

But the betting markets that didn’t respect Michigan State in 2013 or 2014 (combined 19-8 ATS), and Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Tulsa Golden Hurricane at Fresno State Bulldogs

Tulsa at Fresno State
Saturday, 1:30 pm PT
CRIS Opener:
Tulsa -12 O/U 64
CRIS Current: Tulsa -14 O/U 66
Recommendation: Tulsa

The Fresno State Bulldogs showed steady improvement in head coach Tim DeRuyter’s first two seasons including an 11-2 campaign in 2013; Derek Carr’s final season with the program. Since then, however, it has been a sharp and steady decline with just six wins in 2014 and three last season. Fresno State has already been non-competitive in a pair of games against Nebraska and Toledo; blown out by a combined score of 95-27 and outgained by 497 yards. The offense has not been able to sustain drives consistently with redshirt freshman QB Chason Virgil at the helm. Fresno has not run the football effectively either with only 2.9 yards per carry. The Bulldogs defense has been unable to stop anybody surrendering 1,025 total yards against the Cornhuskers and Rockets. Even their win over FCS Sacramento State was unimpressive as Fresno led 10-3 at the half. Fresno State has not provided any evidence to this point they can hang with superior competition and I think they are poised Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Pittsburgh Panthers at North Carolina Tar Heels

Pittsburgh at North Carolina
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ESPNU
CRIS Opener:
North Carolina -8 O/U 70
CRIS Current: North Carolina -7 O/U 67.5
Recommendation: Over

I have successfully faded Pittsburgh with a free play the past two weeks and will pick on them once again at the Panthers travel to Chapel Hill. I detected a defensive weakness against the pass in their 42-39 victory over Penn State and discussed it in last week’s write-up selection vs. Oklahoma State. Money flocked toward Pitt but OSU set a multitude of offensive records against them last Saturday including Mason Rudolph’s 540 passing yards. In their last two games, Pittsburgh has given up 872 yards through the air on 50 completions for an average of 17.4. That number is alarming enough but when you add in the fact that Penn State rang up huge numbers in catch up mode with an average passer Trace McSorely, the concern becomes larger. Then take into account that pass reliant Oklahoma State threw for 540 yards with a ground game that is more of a below average diversion than true threat and you clearly see a problem.

College Football Betting Preview: Nebraska Cornhuskers at Northwestern Wildcats

Nebraska at Northwestern

CRIS Opener:
Nebraska -6 O/U 48.5
CRIS Current: Nebraska -7.5 O/U 48
Recommendation: Nebraska

Big Ten gets underway on Saturday as the Northwestern Wildcats host the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Last week, our free play selection cashed as Northwestern picked up its first victory of the season with a 24-13 win over Duke. Tied 7-7 at halftime, the Wildcats finally were able to get their offense going with 17 second half points. They finished with 320 passing yards (8.2 per play) and for the first time all year topped the 400 total yardage barrier. Now they will face a Nebraska squad coming off of a massive 35-32 home win over Oregon. The Huskers used a balance attack of passing and rushing to work over a suspect Ducks’ defense. They also picked up some big plays on special teams, notably De'Mourney Pearson-El's punt return at the end of the first half that led to a TD to help rally back from an initial 20-7 deficit. Oregon didn't help its cause with 13 penalties for 126 yards.

Last year’s meeting saw Northwestern pick up a close 30-28 Read more

Oregon at Nebraska
Saturday, 12:30 am PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Nebraska -3 O/U 70.5
CRIS Current: Nebraska -3 O/U 74.5
Recommendation: Oregon

If you look at the final scores of Nebraska’s first two games, this pointspread might make sense.  After all, the Huskers are coming off back-to-back dominating wins and covers against Fresno and Wyoming over the last two weeks, covering as a home favorite for the first times since a Week 2 win over South Alabama last year.

There’s only one problem with that assumption.  Nebraska didn’t dominate either game.  Both blowouts were completely fraudulent.  And Oregon’s team speed will be highly problematic for a Cornhuskers defense that hasn’t seen playmakers like these in year – they haven’t faced Ohio State or Michigan in Big Ten play in either of the past two seasons.

In Week 1, Nebraska entered the fourth quarter against Freson clinging to a 21-10 lead, but a pair of Bulldogs interceptions set up the Huskers down the stretch as they punched in three unanswered touchdowns in the Read more

Oregon at Nebraska
Saturday, 12:30 am PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Nebraska -3 O/U 70.5
CRIS Current: Nebraska -3 O/U 74
Recommendation: Oregon

From 2010 to 2014, Oregon closed as an underdog only once (53-30 win at 7th-ranked Stanford as +2.5 dogs in 2011). They were the clear class of the PAC-12 and garnered a ton of respect in the betting markets. Last season, however, was the first time since 2007 the Ducks failed to win 10 games. And what we remember last was an embarrassing bowl game loss to TCU in which Oregon blew a 31-0 halftime lead. Heading into this season, the Ducks weren't the first choice to win the PAC-12; in fact, they were priced third behind both Stanford and Washington. And through the first two weeks of the season, the downgrading looks to be correct with Oregon posting lackluster wins and pointspread failures against weaker foes Virginia and UC Davis.

Nebraska has that "well oiled machine" look after blowout wins and easy pointspread covers over Wyoming and Fresno State. The two wins have helped the Cornhuskers make a sizeable power rating jump. Last season, Nebraska Read more
