College Football Betting Preview: Appalachian State Mountaineers at Tennessee Volunteers

Appalachian State at Tennessee
Thursday, 4:30 pm PT - SEC Network
CRIS Opener:
Tennessee -22.5 O/U 56
CRIS Current: Tennessee -21 O/U 59
Recommendation: Tennessee

This will mark the third year in a row the Tennessee Volunteers play a strong mid-major to open the season and thus far, Butch Jones has made sure the Vols passed each test. In 2014, UT beat a 10-win Utah State team 38-7 and last season, cruised past high-powered Bowling Green, 59-30. Last year’s Sun Belt runners-up return 15 starters are a co-betting favorites with Arkansas State to win the conference title. Many think this will be a breakout year for Tennessee as the Vols are currently priced at -125 chalk to win the SEC East and the third betting choice (+420) to win the SEC championship.

Jones’ offense features two incredible playmakers in senior quarterback Joshua Dobbs and junior running back Jalen Hurd. Add to it a strong offensive line as well as talented depth at the skill positions and we have reason to believe the Vols will be able to move the ball with ease. And while Appalachian State will have edges on Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Oklahoma Sooners at Houston Cougars

Oklahoma at Houston
Saturday, 9 am PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Oklahoma -10 O/U 66
CRIS Current: Oklahoma -11.5 O/U 68
Recommendation: Over

My initial gut reaction here was to take a long, hard look at taking Houston plus the points.  The Cougars were no joke last year, finishing the season 13-1 following a resounding win over Florida State in the Peach Bowl.  Their lone loss came by a field goal on a cold, rainy November day at Connecticut when QB Greg Ward was sidelined for most of the game.

But after a thorough examination of the Houston defense, I think the Over is the superior play.  Houston is capable of putting points on the scoreboard, even against a quality defense like Oklahoma’s.  Head Coach Tom Hermann, who signed a contract extension to stay at Houston in the offseason, is the guy who designed an offense for third string QB Cardale Jones to hang 42 on Alabama and 42 more on Oregon when Ohio State pulled off back-to-back upsets to win the National Title back in 2014.  Last year, he took an unknown, unheralded former wide receiver in Greg Ward, and turned Read more

College Football Betting Preview: BYU Cougars vs. Arizona Wildcats

BYU vs. Arizona (Glendale)
Saturday, 7:30 pm PT - FS-1
CRIS Opener:
Arizona pk O/U 63
CRIS Current: Arizona -1 O/U 60.5
Recommendation: Under

Major changes going on at BYU with longtime head coach Bronco Mendenhall headed to Virginia and former Oregon State DC Kalani Sitake handed the reigns. Also new will be offensive coordinator TY Detmer who takes over for Robert Anae who followed Mendenhall to Charlottesville. Detmer has never coached at the collegiate level and plans to implement a more pro style approach compared to the spread, up-tempo attack ran under Anae. The move is interesting because it doesn't necessarily fit the skill set of veteran quarterback Taysom Hill who as we all know is ultra-dangerous using his feet. However, it may give Hill a better chance to stay healthy after missing time due to injury each of the last two seasons. Either way, the plan is to be more deliberate as stated by backup quarterback Koy Detmer Jr.

“Last year, we were trying to go real fast and catch the defense off-guard, trying to score a lot of points and get a lot of plays,” said backup Read more

College Football Betting Preview: San Jose Spartans at Tulsa Golden Hurricane

San Jose State at Tulsa
Saturday, 4 pm PT - CBSC
CRIS Opener:
Tulsa -6 O/U 63.5
CRIS Current: Tulsa -5 O/U 70
Recommendation: Tulsa

The Tulsa Golden Hurricane enter the second year of the Philip Montgomery regime and I think this team is poised for improvement following a 6-7 campaign. This program was a disaster area during Bill Blankenship’s tenure but Montgomery, in just his first year on the job, took the team from 2-10 to a bowl game berth. Senior quarterback Dane Evans is back to lead what should be a very good offense. Evans posted a 63% completion rate with 25 TDs and just 8 INTs and should be even better in 2016. The offensive line has four returning starters and they have plenty of playmakers at the skill positions to put up points in bunches. Tulsa is in need of improvement on defense which was their biggest issue last season. They return seven starters including four of their top five tacklers. The Golden Hurricane will no doubt be better against the run after getting carved up for 240 ypg. The d-line returns three starters and everyone starting along that unit is either a junior or Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Bowling Green Falcons at Ohio State Buckeyes

Bowling Green at Ohio State
Saturday, 9 am PT - Big Ten Network
CRIS Opener:
Ohio State -26 O/U 56
CRIS Current: Ohio State -28 O/U 64
Recommendation: Ohio State

The season kicks off in Columbus on Saturday morning as Ohio State hosts fellow in-state foe Bowling Green. The Buckeyes are looking to return back to the College Football Playoff after falling a field goal short of an undefeated regular season thanks to Michigan State. Urban Meyer's recruiting prowess is the key factor as to why many believe OSU is still one of the top contenders this season. The Buckeyes return only six starters on both sides of the ball but with tons of talented five-star freshman and many sophomores and juniors who know the systems well, this team should be able to pick up right where they've left off.

Bowling Green has a ton of changes heading into the year starting with first-year head coach Mike Jinks who was a top-tier prep coach for many years in Texas. He was part of Texas Tech's staff last season under Kliff Kingsbury. His familiarity with spread offenses will fit this up-tempo ball club that scored 591 Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Reevaluating NFL teams during the preseason

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
If you read my NFL previews over the summer months (eight different Wiseguy Reports, one for each division), you know that I had some pretty strong opinions about a good handful of teams prior to the start of training camp and preseason.  In fact, 15 of the 32 NFL teams were on my initial short list for potential season win total bets, just shy of half the league.  These were all teams that, on paper, looked better or worse than initial oddsmaker projections.

After watching three weeks of NFL Preseason action, most of my initial opinions have been reinforced, and the betting markets have agreed with the vast majority of the win total wagers that I’ve made and those I’ve advised my clients to make.  That being said, I’ve changed my opinion on a handful of those 15 teams, in several cases rather strongly.  In this week’s wiseguy report, I’m going to flesh out what I’ve seen in the Washington Redskins, Miami Dolphins, Chicago Bears and Baltimore Ravens that have me thinking very differently about those squads today compared to my opinion of them a month ago.

For the Redskins, the change in thought process is Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Kansas City Royals at Miami Marlins

Kansas City (Gee) +200 at Miami (Fernandez) O/U 7
Recommendation: Kansas City

I understand how well Jose Fernandez has pitched at home in his career, compiling a ridiculous 26-2 mark with a 1.62 ERA at Marlins Park.  His numbers have been steady and consistent throughout the 2016 campaign as well: 9-2 with a 2.07 ERA in Miami.  The betting attention that Fernandez has attracted during this long term run of excellence has resulted in prices like the one we’re seeing here, with Miami priced higher than 2:1 to win tonight’s game.

There’s one big problem with those long term, aggregate numbers – they don’t factor in current form.  Let’s not forget that Fernandez made only 11 starts last year and eight starts in 2014, dealing with the aftermath of Tommy John surgery.  He’s already thrown 141.2 innings this year, far more than in either of the last two seasons.  And Fernandez sure looks like he’s wearing down right now.  Miami is 0-4 in his last four starts (all as favorites, including a home loss at -240), and Fernandez has an ERA of 6.00 during that span.  Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NFL Preseason Handicapping Part II

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week, in Part I of my Wiseguy Report on NFL Preseason Betting strategies, I listed a handful of key mantras for winning in August. Don’t confuse a team’s regular season capabilities with their preseason goals.  Bet on teams in August that have a battle for their starting QB spot.  Know your coaches and their track records in various roles (and in various weeks).  And bet information, not opinions.

All of those stand as solid mainstream advice; the stuff the markets are paying attention to.  This week, in Part II — preseason advanced handicapping methods —  I’m going to write about the things that the markets don’t pay enough attention to...but they probably should!

Let me start with a bold statement: "3" is not the most important key number when it comes to betting in the NFL reason.  Neither is "7".  No, the most important pointspread number in August is the number "1."  Read more
