College Football Betting Preview: Fresno State Bulldogs at USC Trojans

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Fresno State at USC
Saturday, 4:30 pm PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
USC -22 O/U 58
CRIS Current: USC -21.5 O/U 57.5
Ian’s Recommendation: USC

Rematch of last year’s Las Vegas Bowl in which USC demolished a better Fresno State squad, 45-20. Fresno State’s success was contingent upon its offense behind quarterback Derek Carr. He has since moved on to the NFL and head coach Tim DeRuyter has narrowed his replacement down to either junior Brian Burrell or Duke transfer Brandon Connette. Regardless of who starts both are expected to play on Saturday. This uncertainty doesn’t bode well for Fresno State against a stellar USC defense that welcomes back one of the best defensive lines in the country with Leonard Williams, J.R. Tavai, and Antwaun Woods. And behind them, even with the loss of Jabari Ruffin to a season ending torn ACL injury, they are still very strong Read more

College Football Betting Preview: California Golden Bears at Northwestern Wildcats

California at Northwestern
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Northwestern -12 O/U 61
CRIS Current: Northwestern -11 O/U 60
Andrew's Recommendation: Northwestern

The thing to remember about Cal is if we go back to the early portion of head coach Sonny Dykes' first season there were signs of potential. In Week 1 Cal had Northwestern on the ropes in Berkley before two costly second half interceptions gave the far more experience Wildcats the 44-30 win. And in Week 3, Cal was eventually blown out but hung over 500 yards on a 12-win Ohio State squad. Then the wheels came off as injuries set in, their lack of depth was exposed, and Dykes' pedal-to-the-metal offense put a ridiculous amount of pressure of what would end up being one the worst defenses in the country. My point? If Cal was good enough to play with Northwestern and move the ball vs. Ohio State then a year later (wiser, stronger, and healthier) Read more

College Football Betting: Friedgen makes his OC debut for Rutgers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Rutgers vs. Washington State -8 O/U 63

Good article on Rutgers offensive coordinator Ralph Friedgen. The Fridge has been tight-lipped about how the Scarlet Knights will line up for Thursday's opener vs. Washington State (at Seattle). His Maryland teams were pretty balanced but head coach Kyle Flood said he wouldn't mind utilizing some form of the spread at times.

"I thought he would be a perfect fit for us because he was a pro-style coordinator that had a lot of flexibility in his run and pass, which is something I'm always looking for,'' Flood said, describing why he lured Friedgen out of retirement. "For Ralph to decide to come back to football, and to come back to Rutgers to do it, I couldn't me more excited. We've got one of the premier offensive minds of the Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Boise State Broncos vs. Ole Miss Rebels

Boise State vs. Mississippi
Thursday, 5 pm PT, Atlanta - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Mississippi -10 O/U 56.5
CRIS Current: Mississippi -10.5 O/U 53.5
Rob's Recommendation: Over

Intriguing non-conference, neutral field matchup between teams with something to prove. Ole Miss has drawn a lot of preseason enthusiasm but not enough to make the masses believe they’ll finish in the top three of the SEC West. Head coach Hugh Freeze and staff have recruited tremendously and the Rebels are out to show everyone they can take a major step up in the standings. They have 15 returning starters and 60 returning lettermen from last year’s 8-5 team including senior quarterback Bo Wallace. The return of second team All-SEC tieght end Evan Pilgrim is huge for the team as he was quickly becoming a security blanket for Wallace prior to his season-ending injury late last season. Defensively, this team has playmakers at every level Read more

College Football Gambling: Wisconsin remains noncommittal on starting quarterback

08.26.2014     07:27 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week, reports surfaced that Wisconsin was going to start former safety/JC quarterback Tanner McEvoy ahead of last year's starter Joel Stave. Now head coach Gary Andersen is saying neither one has been anointed the "No. 1 guy." Clearly McEvoy has better upside but Week 1's game vs. LSU is not an ideal environment for a rookie quarterback. At some point, the Badgers may need Stave's experience hence why Andersen hints both guys will likely see the field.

"At the end of the day we're right where we were," Andersen said. "We've got two quarterbacks that I think are going to help this football team throughout the year.

"And whoever takes the first snap doesn't necessarily say he is going to be the guy for the whole season.

"We've got two kids that want to compete and will continue to compete. That's where we're going to stay with it. "

"The offense is built around the offense, Read more

College Football Gambling Update: Tennessee wants offense to focus on tight ends

08.25.2014     12:49 PM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Virtually non-existent last year, Tennessee plans on utilizing its tight ends more in 2014. Head coach Butch Jones went so far as to say the offense would be "tight end-oriented." That sounds a bit extreme but also smart considering the Vols now have both talent and depth and the position. It will also in theory help quarterback Justin Worley’s development.

“We want to be a tight end-oriented offense,” Jones said last week. “... Now we have a little bit of depth, but we also have competition there as well, which is great to see. The competition has really elevated the play of a lot of individuals at that particular spot.”

“(Offensive coordinator Mike Bajakian) does a great job of adjusting year-by-year to the strength of the team,” Elder said. “As we play and as we play well, we’re going to be in more multiple tight Read more

College Fotball Gambling Update: CRIS reopens Ohio State -12.5 at Navy

UPDATE

A lot of talk over the last 48 hours about how oddsmakers and the betting markets would react to Ohio State's Braxton Miller being out for the year. The Buckeyes were 17-point road favorites at Navy for Week 1 before sportsbooks pulled the game off the board. CRIS just reopened the game -12.5.

CFL Betting News and Notes Week 8

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Here are my CFL Week 8 News & Notes as I take a look at each team from a betting perspective.

Toronto Argonauts (3-5 SU, 3-5 ATS)
Toronto had a busy Week 8 by playing two games in the span five days. They took advantage of their bye week by trouncing Winnipeg, 38-21, but the tables turned when BC took advantage of eight days off and really wore down the Argos late en route to a 33-17 win. Quarterback Ricky Ray and his new look receiving corps -- due to multiple injuries -- fired on all cylinders against Winnipeg as Ray tossed four touchdowns. But it was a different story against BC’s stout defense with the Argos scoring just a lone touchdown while also coughing up a few turnovers. Toronto can’t be held to too much blame for the BC loss as the schedule really conspired against them but it doesn’t get easier with a daunting road trip to Edmonton (6-1) on deck.

Montreal Alouettes (1-6 SU, 2-5 ATS)
The change to quarterback Alex Brink didn’t result in a win as the Alouettes notched only 11 points in the loss to Saskatchewan but I did spot some positives with Brink under center. He Read more

College Football Gambling Alert: Sportsbooks take Ohio State-Navy off the board following Miller injury

08.19.2014     07:02 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Ohio State's Braxton Miller reportedly re-injured his shoulder during yesterday's practice and is awaiting results on an MRI. During Braxton's absence last year, the Buckeyes didn't miss a beat with Kenny Guiton (14-2 TD-INT ratio) under center. Guiton however has since graduated leaving redshirt freshman J.T. Barrett as the team's top option. Barrett obviously has no game experience but saw plenty of work in spring practice while Braxton was recovering from offseason shoulder surgery. The Buckeyes open the season at Navy. Prior to Miller's injury, OSU was a 17-point road favorite. Most sportsbooks have since taken the game off the board.

College Football Gambling: Purdue names sophomore Etling starting QB

08.18.2014     12:57 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
There weren't many BCS conference passing attacks as bad as Purdue last season as the Boilermakers ranked 108th nationally in QB Rating (111.8). Rob Henry was nothing short of a disaster and midseason the Boilermakers went the youth route with freshman Danny Etling. Etling took his lumps but did close the season strong (67%, 670 yards, 6 TDs, 2 INTs) albeit against much softer competition (Penn State, Illinois, and Indiana). Second-year head coach Darrell Hazell recently named Etling the team's Week 1 starter vs. Western Michigan. The Boilermakers are currently 11-point home chalk.
