History shows us many things about what it takes to be a champion. I write this article every year, and every year except for one, I have been able to identify the eventual NCAA National Champion among my elite level teams. Last year was no exception. I pegged Kansas as my title team, and they made it all the way to the national championship game against Kentucky before falling short.
Past predictions do not necessarily indicate future success, but I’ll stand by my track record in this article. Remember, as always, this gets written before the regular season is over, before the conference tournaments, before the seedings are announced and before a single tournament game has been played.
I’ve nailed the winner of the NCAA tournament three times in the last six years, correctly predicting Florida in ’07, Kansas in ’08 and North Carolina in ’09. I did NOT predict Duke in 2010, and didn’t even have UConn in the discussion in 2011.

We’ll take a look at the Detroit Piston's plus the big points tonight against San Antonio. Injuries have started to really pile up for the Spurs with Stephen Jackson and Gary Neal doubtful and Boris Diaw and Tony Parker out. Parker is quietly having an MVP-type season with 21.0 ppg and 7.6 assists. The Spurs have been able to succeed when parts of the "Big Three" sit or are injured but without Parker as well as the other injuries, it becomes tough to cover big numbers like what we're seeing tonight. Detroit comes in rested after losing at New Orleans 100-95 on Friday. I expect this to be a lower scoring game which San Antonio has a tendency to win but not cover when laying big points. Look for Detroit’s Greg Monroe to have a big day in the paint and for the Pistons to cash as a +12.5 underdog.

March has its Madness. Late February college basketball doesn’t have anything to get excited about beyond the fact that it’s a “Prelude to March Madness.” As a result, this stretch of calendar historically has seen many subpar efforts from college powers. The kids can’t concentrate on their homework because Christmas is coming.
Tonight, the top two computer teams in the Jeff Sagarin and Ken Pomeroy rankings both lost outright as road favorites. One guy has Indiana #1 and Florida #2, the other has it the other way. Our estimate of market Power Ratings also had those teams as the top two last time we looked. The results don’t lie as the Crimson Tide enter tonight’s rivalry showdown against Auburn on a dreadful 0-6 ATS run in their six SEC home games as favorites. They had single-digit home wins against Tennessee, Arkansas, LSU and Texas A&M – none of which were enough for a pointspread cover as home favorites. Alabama was only able to beat SEC bottom feeders Mississippi State by 8 as 15-point home favorites and South Carolina by 10 as 12-point home favorites. The spot is not good either for the home team tonight. Alabama is coming off a wild triple OT thriller at LSU coming up just short 97-94 after blowing a 10-point lead with 2 minutes left. That isn’t the kind of loss that is easy to rebound from especially when you are talking about a team needing to win by a significant margin.

It’s late February, and there’s still two more full weeks of regular season action in college hoops before the madness truly begins. It’s too early to write about conference tournament betting strategies – I’ll save that for next week. But it’s not too late to write about the bevy of ‘dead’ teams that are populating the college hoops landscape right now; teams that are lethargically playing out the string of the regular season. Sometimes, the sharp move is to lay big points fading sorry teams.
Even bad teams have hope in November – the season is fresh and new; teammates aren’t sick and tired of each other or their coaches, and the nagging injuries haven’t started to pile up. And teams that get smacked around in non-conference play for two months get an opportunity to regroup against comparable competition when conference play begins in January.
But when things go south in conference play, it’s not easy for many of these squads to continue competing at the same level they were earlier in the season. By late February, the final few weeks of the regular season are a meat grinder for struggling

Take a piece of graph paper, and turn it sideways so you’re looking at it like it’s the same shape as the screen on your laptop (short and wide like a cutting board as opposed to tall and skinny like notebook paper).
Down the left side, right the names of the 30 NBA teams. I do it by divisions because it’s easier for me to think of the teams in clusters like that. You may prefer alphabetically because it’s easier to look for a certain team. Whatever. There should be at least 30 lines if you have a typical piece of graph paper. If you don’t…find one that has at least 30 lines so that each team will have a row going across.
Now, across the top of the paper, write the days of the month. You’re building a calendar. There’s room in each little box to write a number. You should know what month it is…so you don’t have to write F22, F23, F24 if it’s February. Just the numbers should do unless you’re a
