Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: Who Has What It Takes to Win the Big Dance Part II

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In Part 1 of this article last week, I took a basic look at the profile of the past 16 NCAA champions.  From that profile, I was able to make a ‘short list’ of potential champs in 2014, consisting of the following 18 teams: Cincinnati, Louisville, Virginia, Syracuse, Duke, North Carolina, Kansas, Iowa State, Creighton, Villanova, Michigan, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Iowa, Arizona, UCLA, Florida and Kentucky.

However, since last week, two of those 18 teams have been bounced from consideration, including one of the co- favorites at any sportsbook in Vegas – John Calipari’s Kentucky Wildcats.  Kentucky lost two straight last week; Iowa has lost three of their last four.  Both teams are now above the seven loss cut-off line and can be eliminated.

The next step in the elimination process is to look at the team’s records away from home.
The NCAA championship is not won on a team’s home floor.  Even with a Read more

Kansas pk at Oklahoma State O/U 149.5
Recommendation: Kansas

Kansas clinched a share of the Big XII title in its last game at home against Oklahoma and go for the outright title this evening in Stillwater. The Jayhawks should be able to do so against an Oklahoma State team that has won two straight since the return of Marcus Smart, but is still not the team that everyone expected them to be at the beginning of the season. OSU snapped a seven-game losing skid in Smart's return against Texas Tech and followed that win up with a blowout win vs. TCU (combined 5-25 record in league play). The Cowboys are still a flawed team and had lost four straight games before Smart's suspension. They have very little depth and their defense has suffered without Michael Cobbins in the middle. Kansas will take advantage of the Cowboys in the paint and on the glass with Perry Ellis and Joel Embiid. Oklahoma State definitely has one of the strongest home courts in college basketball and should have an enthusiastic crowd but even a spirited effort won't be enough. Kansas has won in its last two visits to Stillwater and has beaten the Cowboys in six of the last seven Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Play: New Orleans Pelicans at Phoenix Suns

New Orleans at Phoenix -7 O/U 203
Recommendation: Phoenix

It doesn’t look as if Anthony Davis is going to be able to suit up for the Pelicans tonight after he hurt his shoulder in the first half of New Orleans ugly loss at Dallas on Wednesday.  Already without key starters Jrue Holiday and Ryan Anderson, as well as Davis’ primary backup Jason Smith, the Pelicans are tanking these days.

New Orleans is winless since the All-Star break and losers of seven of their last eight, the lone win coming at hapless Milwaukee.  Without Davis on the floor, they got outscored by 13 after halftime against the Mavs.  The last time Davis missed a game, New Orleans scored only 77 points in a double digit loss at Minnesota.  And New Orleans will be walking into a real hornet’s nest in Phoenix tonight.

The Suns have avoided losing streaks like the plague for most of the season, but they’ve lost three straight and six of their last Read more

College Basketball Betting: Nebraska Cornhuskers making money for their backers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Nebraska improved to 16-10 overall and 8-6 in Big Ten play with Sunday’s 76-57 win over Purdue as a five-point home favorite. Terran Petteway continued his stellar play by dropping 29 points on the Boilermakers. The win was the fifth straight for the Cornhuskers both straight up and against the spread. They have now won 12 of their 13 home games while going 11-2 ATS.

Tim Miles’ team remains perfect in single-digit chalk situations. With Sunday’s cover, Nebraska is now 9-0 in such spots. The Cornhuskers have covered the number at an 11-1 ATS clip in their last 12 games. Nebraska wasn’t even in the bubble conversation until it went into Breslin Center two Sundays ago and left East Lansing with a 60-51 triumph as a 14-point underdog. It hooked up money-line supporters with a payout in the +850 range (paid $850 on $100 wagers).

With a pair of blowout wins over Penn State and Purdue added to its resume, Nebraska’s profile is on the rise (currently #46 in RPI Rankings). It has only one home loss that came in a 71-70 decision to Michigan back on Jan. 8. Nebraska has a 6-7 record against the RPI Top 100 and only three of its defeats came at Read more

Samford -4.5 at The Citadel
Recommendation: Samford

The Citadel has been ridiculously bad this season and is currently in the midst of a 10-game span where they have not come within five points of their opponents. Overall, the average loss during this stretch has been 14.8 ppg with eight being by nine or more. While Citadel is locked into the #11 spot in the upcoming Southern Conference Tournament, Samford has an opportunity to gain the #6 spot with a strong close to the regular season. Samford owns the tiebreaker against NC-Greensboro by virtue of their 88-78 win back on Jan 23. The #6 seed becomes important because it faces the league’s worst team (#11 seed) in the first round which will be this Citadel team.

The likely #10 seed is Furman which Samford struggled with twice this year so earning the #6 figures to make a difference for them. The nine days off for Samford heading into this contest could benefit them as well in the form of fresh legs at a time of year (just 3-4 games left) where teams are somewhat fatigued. Fundamentally, each of these teams is smallish and has defensive troubles but the gaping difference between them is Read more

History shows us many things about what it takes to be a champion. I write this article every year, and every year except for one, I have been able to identify the eventual NCAA National Champion among my elite level teams.

Last year was no exception. Here’s what I wrote about Louisville in my ‘Who Has What It Takes’ article from 2013: “The Cardinals have star power, depth, experience and talent. They rebound, play defense and win games consistently away from home. Rick Pitino’s squad meets all the criteria that has been effective at predicting past championship. Plain and simple, Louisville has what it takes to win it all.” Louisville, of course, was the last team standing in the 68 team field last year, winning the national championship over Michigan.

Past predictions do not necessarily indicate future success, but I’ll stand by my track record in this article. Remember, as always, this gets written before the regular season is over, before the conference tournaments, before the seedings are announced and before a single tournament game has been played.

I’ve nailed the winner of the NCAA tournament four Read more

San Antonio -1.5 at Phoenix O/U 208.5
Recommendation: San Antonio

My clients and I have already cashed four winning bets supporting San Antonio on their annual ‘Rodeo Road Trip’. And we’ve got another prime opportunity to make money riding the Spurs as they close out their extended trip tonight in Phoenix.

The Spurs go through this February stretch every season, and just about every season, they make money for their supporters.  They went 7-2 SU on this trip last year, 8-1 SU on this trip in 2012 and 6-3 SU on the trip in 2011.  I could go back further, but you get the point.  It’s surely worth noting that the Spurs have closed out their successful trips with a victory in their last Rodeo Road Trip game in each of the last three years.

“Spurs head coach Greg Popovich gets the point too.  “This is a time when we always try to make hay. Historically, that ‘Rodeo Road Trip’; that time before, Read more

College Basketball Gambling: UMass tries to hang on to the basketball vs. VCU

VCU at UMass -1.5 O/U 147.5

Big game on tap tonight in the A-10 with VCU traveling to UMass. Saint Louis (24-2, 11-0) looks to be running away with the regular season crown but both the Rams and the Minutemen are eying a trip to the Big Dance. VCU won and covered both meetings last season; 86-68 at home and 71-62 in the conference tournament. The Rams forced 48 turnovers in the two games.

"You just can't (prepare for Havoc), because you don't know what they're going to throw at you," he said. "They're going to be looking to key in on certain players. They press and they put (junior guard Briante) Weber on the other team's best player."

"It's always difficult to prepare for it no matter what you do, just because they operate at a different speed," he said. "We've gotten a little better at it each time, but they do what they do, and they do it very well. They're one of the few teams nationally who press all the time and play their style no matter what.

Michigan State -5 at Purdue O/U 140

For the last month, Michigan State has traded off wins and losses as it enters tonight's game at Purdue off a 60-51 home defeat vs. Nebraska. Over the last two regular seasons, the Spartans are 10-2 SU, 8-3 ATS (one game was not lined) off of a loss. MSU has also been a beast on the road, covering seven of its last eight contests. Keith Appling was expected to miss extended time but played 19 minutes against the Cornhuskers. He's reportedly good to go for tonight.

“I have five Big Ten games left in my final go-round as a Spartan,” he said, “and I plan on playing in all five of them.”

College Basketball Handicapping: Minnesota's defense on the upswing

02.19.2014     12:26 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Illinois at Minnesota -7.5 O/U 129.5

Article on Minnesota's recent defensive improvements. Seasonally, the Gophers rank 10th in the Big Ten in points per possession allowed (1.06) but last time out they held Northwestern to 0.81 and also puts the clamps on Indiana (0.94). They'll still have issues with the better offenses in the Big Ten but against Illinois and Ohio State (Sat.), Minny is primed for more strong outputs.

“We’ve played much better defense,” Gophers coach Richard Pitino said. “The numbers may not indicate it as much, but … [on Sunday] that was the most fundamentally sound we’ve been all year.”

“Guys are coming together and realizing that if we want to win games, we’re going to have to defend,” he said.
