Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Bowl season has history of controversy

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
There was always going to be controversy.  The system is designed to produce controversy or in 21st century parlance, to generate buzz.  And from the beginning, the college football playoffs were fraught with difficult decisions about which schools deserved to play for the title, and which ones would be on the outside of the process, looking in.

1998 was the beginning of the BCS Bowl era.  The 1998 Fiesta Bowl was the first official national title game; coming on the heels of the split national title between Michigan and Nebraska the previous season.  And while there wasn’t much controversy involving the two teams that played for the title (Tennessee and Florida State), the system itself was under fire from the get-go.  One loss Kansas State finished third in the final BCS standings, but the Wildcats were passed over by all the BCS Bowls, relegated to an Alamo Bowl matchup against Purdue.  To the surprise of no one, the system for choosing the BCS Bowl teams was tweaked the following year.

In 1999, Kansas State finished sixth in the BCS standings, yet they were passed over again.  Michigan got a BCS bowl bid over Michigan Read more

College Basketball Betting News and Notes 12-6-2014

Quick hitter thoughts on Saturday's marquee college basketball games.

Virginia at VCU - Rematch of last year's game in which VCU waltzed into Charlottesville and escaped with a 59-56 win after trailing by 6 with two minutes to go. UVA committed 19 turnovers in the loss; something that is likely to be shored up even with this game taking place in Richmond. If VCU isn’t forcing turnovers and/or running/knocking down threes in transition, they become very beatable.

Gonzaga at Arizona - Interesting to see how the Zags matchup against Arizona's size and athleticism. They were completely overwhelmed in last year's 84-61 NCAA Tournament loss. I give them a shot however with Arizona simply not having the offense to pull away from top level competition: see close wins over Kansas State and San Diego State. Cats have a tendency to build leads, sit on the ball, and let the defense take over. Bound to backfire at some point.

Wisconsin at Marquette - Sloppy game by the Badgers in Wednesday's home loss to Duke. The Blue Devils are really good but once again, Wisky had issues against an athletic team. Give Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Ohio State Buckeyes at Louisville Cardinals

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Ohio State at Louisville -8 O/U 135.5
Recommendation: Louisville

This marks the first real test of the year for the young Ohio State Buckeyes. Thus far, the Buckeyes have feasted on weak competition at home, winning all five of their games by wide margins. Their stiffest test came against a rebuilding Marquette team on November the 18th, a game they won 74-63. This marks a completely different challenge, as they not only face the first team that is better than they are, they do so on the road in a very hostile environment.

Ohio State is relying heavily on two freshmen and a sophomore that didn’t play much as a freshman and a couple of seniors. Freshman guard D’Angelo Russell is their leading scorer but he could wilt in the face of the Louisville pressure. He had seven turnovers against Marquette and four against James Madison, the two most athletic teams he has faced, and the pressure of the Cardinals will be much, much more intense than those teams.  Senior guard Shannon Scott will be the primary ball handler for the Buckeyes, but he will have to have some help and none of the other guards on the roster have any Read more

College Football Gambling: Barrett's injury swings Big Ten Championship pointspread over a touchdown

Article on Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones who will start Saturday's Big Ten Championship vs. Wisconsin. Jones has attempted only 17 passes this season but has been a part of the offense at times with 26 carries for 206 yards (7.92 ypc). According to ESPN, the Westgate would have lined the game Ohio State -3.5 with JT Barrett under center. Instead, they opened the Badgers -4.

College Football Betting Preview: Auburn Tigers at Alabama Crimson Tide

Auburn at Alabama
Saturday, 4:45 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Alabama -9.5 O/U 53.5
CRIS Current: Alabama -9 O/U 54
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Alabama -8.5
Brent Crow's Recommendation: Alabama

The biggest rivalry game in the country once again has extreme national title implications, just as it has for the past three years. Auburn pulled off the miracle win last year and wound up in the national title game against Florida State. That field goal return for the winning score has stuck in the craw of Alabama fans for 365 days and the Tide would love nothing more than to seal the SEC West title with a win over Auburn.

Three or four weeks ago, it looked like this could possibly be for all the marbles in a winner take all affair, but Auburn’s two losses have reduced them to potential spoiler. Auburn did not play well in its loss to Georgia two weeks ago, and then struggled again last week in a win Read more

Colorado +115 at Arizona O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Colorado

Colorado heads to Arizona tonight with both teams underperforming in the standings.  The Avalanche have to be the bigger disappointment of the two as no one predicted the Coyotes to make much noise in the West.  Despite the teams taking up two of the last three spots in the Western Conference, one team is heading in the right direction while the other remains stagnant.  The Avalanche dug themselves into a pretty big hole early in the season, losing six of their first seven games.  But they look to have righted the ship with three wins in their last four games and perhaps a season defining moment in their come-from-behind victory on Saturday night against the Carolina Hurricanes.  I am always looking for positive momentum and confidence building situations with good teams, and it looks like we have just that after the Avs mounted a two-goal comeback in the second and third periods to win 4-3.  They are still playing without a few key players in their lineup, but they have been plugging and playing just fine with their call ups from the AHL.  Arizona has been Read more

College Football Betting Preview: USC Trojans at UCLA Bruins

USC at UCLA
Saturday, 5 pm PT -ABC
CRIS Opener:
UCLA -3.5 O/U 60.5
CRIS Current: UCLA -4 O/U 61.5
Rob Veno’s Power Rating: UCLA -2
Ian Cameron’s Recommendation: Over

USC and UCLA both control their own destinies heading into Saturday’s pivotal showdown. UCLA needs two wins against USC and Stanford to to clinch the PAC-12 South while USC needs a win and a single Arizona State loss in the Sun Devils’ last two games to clinch.

Both defenses appear to be wearing down here in the month of November as a result of lack of depth. USC is still feeling the impact of the scholarship reductions having allowed 24+ points in five of their last six games. The only time they didn’t was against Washington State when Connor Halliday was injured in the first half.

UCLA’s offense started off the season sputtering but we’ve seen Brett Hundley and the Bruins Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Minnesota Golden Gophers at Nebraska Cornhuskers

Minnesota at Nebraska
Saturday, 9am PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Nebraska -10.5 O/U 56.5
CRIS Current: Nebraska -10 O/U 56
Rob Veno’s Power Rating: Nebraska -9
Rob Veno’s Recommendation: Over

Pair of significant setbacks last week for each of these teams makes this a mental toughness test. Nebraska’s humiliating loss at Wisconsin where Badgers went on an incredible 56-7 run has many again questioning their defense and Bo Pelini. A convincing bounce back effort is mandatory for the Cornhuskers internally and also to try and restore their reputation outside the locker room.

Despite their home loss to Ohio State last Saturday, the Golden Gophers enter this contest with some confidence after losing control of the OSU game in the second half but then rallying to make things close at the end. It’s a long shot, but Minnesota could still win the Big Ten West by finishing with Read more

Charlotte vs. South Carolina -2.5 O/U 135
Recommendation: Over

If you've watch any college basketball this season you'll notice a lot of low scores and game going under the total. The betting markets are pretty much blind betting every game under the total off of the opener. Any rightfully so as slow pace, lack of fouls, and zone defense seem to be the new trend, especially in power conference play. This however presents opportunities to play overs on cheaper prices when you can find games that project to play fast with so-so defenses. I think we have the with South Carolina and Charlotte. The 49ers are the quintessential over team: good offense, fast pace, average defense. We saw it yesterday when they produced 166 points in regulation against Penn State (Charlotte won 106-97 in 2OT). The Gamecocks meanwhile have played three relatively slow paced, low scoring games against North Florida, Baylor, and Cornell. North Florida runs but doesn't match up well vs. bigger more athletic teams. Baylor and Cornell tend to play slow. Frank Martin's team typically play at an above average pace and while projected to be a better defensive team they still grade Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Northern Illinois Huskies at Ohio Bobcats

Northern Illinois at Ohio
Tuesday, 5 pm PT - ESPNU
CRIS Opener:
Northern Illinois -4 O/U 51
CRIS Current: Northern Illinois -2.5 O/U 50.5
Drew Martin's Recommendation: Northern Illinois

The Ohio Bobcats play host the Northern Illinois Huskies tonight on ESPNU. The Bobcat faithful will participate in a blackout at Peden Stadium at the team looks to become bowl eligible for the sixth straight year. The Huskies also have something at stake; a win this week and next week vs. Western Michigan will earn them a spot in the MAC Championship.

The Huskies have won 41 of their last 42 games when allowing 24 points or less; a stat that could come into play with the temperatures in Athens projected to be in the 20’s with a chance of snow flurries. The NIU offensive line, which features five players with 151 combined starts, has not allowed a sack in five games this season. They Read more
