College Basketball Betting Free Play: Stanford Cardinal at Arizona Wildcats

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Stanford at Arizona
Recommendation: First Half Over 66

Arizona looked like a well-oiled machine in Thursday's PAC-10 regular season title clinching win over Cal. The Wildcats fell one point short of 100 in the 99-60 route. There's no reason to think that UA's desire to push pace and score won't continue against a reeling Stanford squad playing its second road game in three days. The Cardinal had two chances to pick up much-needed resume building wins against Oregon and Arizona State and faltered both times. The inability to step up when needed has been a staple throughout Johnny Dawkins’ tenure. A win here, though very unlikely, would put them back in the NCAA Tournament picture so perhaps we see some fight. In the first meeting, there was plenty of pace (146 possessions) and points (171). While it'll be tough to top that offensive output, I project the pace to be fairly quick throughout. With perhaps less intensity, both teams playing on short rest, this has all the makings of a loose, up-and-down affair. The concern is should Arizona lead big late, the game has the potential to bog down. To avoid that, I think the best angle here is to step Read more

Memphis at UConn -7 O/U 128
Recommendation: UConn

Memphis’s track record is very clear.  When the Tigers step down in class, their athleticism and talent can carry them to victory; hence their 7-2 ATS mark in games where they’ve been favored by 7.5 or more points.  But as an underdog on any floor, the Tigers are 1-7 ATS, consistently failing to step up against quality foes.

Josh Pastner ranks among the Top 10 winningest coaches in the history of college basketball for his first six years on the job, with 147 career victories since he took over for John Calipari as an untested 31 year old.  Yet despite all of that success, Pastner is in real danger of getting fired this offseason.  Despite their talent, Memphis hasn’t survived past the opening weekend of the Big Dance in his tenure.  The Tigers are just 5-20 SU in 25 tries against nationally ranked foes under Pastner.  And Memphis isn’t developing NBA talent under his tutelage, recruiting only two players who were drafted during his tenure, one of whom was Duke transfer Elliot Williams.

Memphis has already matched their highest Read more

College Basketball Betting: Tennessee running out of gas

03.04.2015     08:26 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
After starting 4-1 in SEC play, Tennessee has dropped nine of 11 to fall out of the NCAA Tournament discussion. The Vols' defense appears to be running on fumes having allowed well over a point per possession in six straight contests including 1.22 and 1.19 in recent losses to Vanderbilt and Florida, respectively. UT travels to LSU tonight. The Tigers dominated the first meeting in Knoxville, 73-55.

"I don't know that our team has lost any intensity," Tennessee coach Donnie Tyndall said. "I think the biggest thing is we've lost some detail."

"I don't care who you are, how strong you are," Tyndall said. "Losing is not fun, and it can wear on you a little bit."

College Basketball Betting Alert: West Virginia may be without Staten and Browne vs. Kansas

03.03.2015     10:18 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
As of this morning, West Virginia's Juwan Staten and Gary Browne are listed as doubtful for tonight's game at Kansas. At 22-7, 10-6 Big XII the Mountaineers are a lock for the NCAA Tournament and don't play again until Saturday's regular season finale vs. Oklahoma State.

“Gary [Browne] and Juwan [Staten] understand – the worst thing about losing Juwan is that he knows. He knows where guys are supposed to come open and when they're supposed to come open. So he delivers the ball better. That's because he's been out there for three years. Gary is the next guy in line that understands because, again, he's been out there,” WVU head coach Bob Huggins said following Saturday's loss at Baylor.

Nashville at NY Rangers -120 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Under

Today is the NHL trade deadline and if you think we've seen the last of the big deals you are surely mistaken.  The New York Rangers were very active over the weekend making three separate trades to help bolster their playoff run in the short term.  They are expecting big defensive acquisition Keith Yandle to play tonight.  Nashville comes into New York looking to straighten things out after two straight losses.  The Predators have been the NHL's best team this season, doing it both from an offensive and defensive standpoint.  Nashville ranks seocnd in the league in goals against average so expect the Rangers to have a tougher time breaking through the defense than they have these past few weeks.  New York has really added another offensive element to their game this season with the immense amount of speed through the neutral zone, but expect the Predators to put lots of defensive pressure on the Rangers tonight.  Last meeting was a 3-2 win for Nashville in early February and not once has their last six meetings resulted in a score of greater than five Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Who has what it takes to win the Big Dance Part I

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
History shows us many things about what it takes to be a champion.  I write this article every year, and in every year except for two, I have been able to identify the eventual NCAA National Champion among my elite level teams.   Both exceptions were the same team – UConn – making miracle runs to win the title as prohibitive longshots.

Last year, the Huskies were on the ropes in their tourney opener against St Joe’s, needing a late rally just to send the game to overtime.  Three weeks later, they cut down the nets as national champs at Jerry’s World in Arlington.  I didn’t see it coming.  Neither did the betting markets, with UConn priced in the 100:1 longshot range prior to the tournament.  And if a longshot like that wins every coinflip game in the tourney this year, I’m not likely to get it right either.

I write this article every year before the regular season is over, before the conference tournaments, before the tourney seedings are announced and before a single March Madness game has been played. And I’ve nailed the winner of the NCAA tournament four times in the last eight Read more

College Basketball Gambling Update: Nebraska seeks better effort vs. Ohio State

02.26.2015     11:53 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Our favorite dysfunctional team is back in action tonight as Nebraska heads to Ohio State. The smoke has cleared from the much publicized locker room ban but the fact remains this squad has zero confidence offensively. We expect the "effort" will be there tonight but until the Cornhuskers find a player or two who can hit a shot outside of the lane, Tim Miles will continue to provide us with excellent blog fodder.

“One player said he thought he had his most fun practicing the day after the Iowa game,” Miles said. “I said, ‘Great, you should have tried that 20 hours earlier.’ And we practiced hard. It was not a fun practice, if you know what I mean.”

“I’ve seen people say, ‘Is Miles kicked out of his office?’ Well, we’re not equals. This is not a marriage. It’s like a

College Basketball Handicapping: Minnesota looks to get younger players more reps

02.26.2015     11:46 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
After three straight losses, (16-12, 5-10 Big Ten) Minnesota appears accepting that the only way path to the Big Dance is to win the Big Ten Tournament. But in the meantime, with three games left in the regular season, the Golden Gophers will continue to give their younger players more reps.

“I think the young guys are learning, and I think they’re picking up well,” senior center Mo Walker said. ”You’ve got to give them the court experience or they’ll never learn. … They’ll get better as time goes on.”

“As we’re moving forward, these young guys have got to get reps,” he said Saturday.

Texas +4.5 at West Virginia O/U 136.5
Recommendation: Texas

Going to step in play Texas at +4.5 (a few +5's available) as it heads to West Virginia this evening. Some bettors will undoubtedly point toward the revenge angle (UT won 77-50 in Austin) and the Longhorns' spotty play of late (back-to-back losses). But at the current price there is some value on the underdog as WVU enters off back-to-back upsets and doesn't match up particularly well against UT's front court. While Texas has plenty of weakness -- most notably a lack of consistency -- they do defend well in the paint. In their last two losses, Oklahoma and Iowa State shot a combined 28-of-77, 36.3% from two. What did them in what allowing 20 three-pointers. But unlike the Sooners and Cyclones, the Mountaineers don't have much of any outside shooting prowess. On the season, they've connected on only 30.9% of their three-point attempts. Another angle to consider is WVU's element of surprise, or lack thereof in this spot. In five "second meets" in Big XII pay, the Mountaineers have covered only once; against bottom feeder Texas Tech. Teams clearly know what to expect and while Texas Read more

College Basketball Betting: Nebraska wants to get season over with ASAP

02.23.2015     11:49 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Things continue to head south for Nebraska as always candid head coach Tim Miles banned his team from the locker room following Sunday's 74-46 loss to Iowa. Miles had already hinted the Cornhuskers wouldn't accept a bid to a secondary postseason tournament should they even qualify. They've now lost seven of eight. NU's only win and cover during that span was when it somehow managed to pop for 76 points in blowout win over Northwestern. In their other seven games, they averaged less than 50 ppg. They close out the regular season with road games at Ohio State and Illinois and a home finale vs. Maryland.

“You never want to throw your players under the bus, but that was just beyond disappointing,” Miles said. “That’s not what we represent. I told our guys, ‘when I was at Southwest Minnesota State, to pay for shoes we used to have to go to the Renaissance Festival in Shakopee, Minnesota for a weekend and pick up trash. We were the trash guys.

“And if
