College Basketball Betting Free Play: Manhattan Jaspers at Memphis Tigers

Manhattan at Memphis
Recommendation:
Over 69.5 1st half

Manhattan is a total mess with various departures and injuries. Head coach Steve Masiello has been very candid about not really caring about what happens during the regular season so long as his team peaks come MAAC tournament time. The Jaspers are 1-6 and have allowed 80+ on four occasions. They press, play fast, and can't defend which isn't an ideal profile for a road game at Memphis. The Tigers have exceeded expectations thus far with solid wins over Ohio State and Louisiana Tech. Their two losses (Oklahoma and UTA) are nothing to be ashamed about either. Their shooting has a tendency to be hit or miss (a lot) but considering Manhattan's defensive numbers (56.9% eFG) and propensity to foul, the Tigers should have their way on the offensive end tonight. And speaking of fouls, that's going to be a huge factor in this game. Memphis' offense is predicated on driving and getting to the free throw line. Manhattan meanwhile fouls like crazy as its opponents score 28% of their points from the charity stripe. This is going to be an ugly one to watch but there should be some pace to it. College Football Betting: Oregon loses offensive coordinator Scott Frost

12.11.2015     07:21 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A lot of moving parts with all of the post-regular season coaching changes. Some plan on sticking around before taking over at their new post while others are already out the door. Oregon offensive coordinator Scott Frost took the UCF gig and is wisely heading to Orlando ASAP in order to douse the Knights' dumpster fire. That leaves the Ducks in a position of needing a play caller. It sounds as if head coach Mark Helfrich will fill the void though he said "everyone" will be potentially be involved. The Ducks don't play until January 2 vs. TCU in the Alamo Bowl.

“Scott will not be involved in our game, which is unfortunate for him,” Helfrich said. “But obviously he has a full plate in taking over at Central Florida.”

“Basically, we do everything collaboratively, anyway, from an offensive standpoint,” Helfrich said. “Myself, (wide receivers coach) Matt Lubick, (offensive line coach) Steve Greatwood, (running backs coach) Gary Campbell and

College Football Handicapping: USC's Helton guts defensive staff

12.11.2015     06:45 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
What better way to establish dominance than to fire half of your staff a day removed from being promoted. Newly appointed USC head coach Clay Helton cut bait with a number of defensive coaches including defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox. The Trojans finished a respectable fourth in PAC-12 play with 5.88 yards per play allowed. However, in late season losses to Oregon and Stanford, the stop unit was gashed for nearly 1,000 yards at 7.8 ypp. USC is currently a -3 favorite for its Holiday Bowl matchup vs. Wisconsin.

"With the coaches we have on staff and with our graduate assistants, we feel more than confident in doing a great job with this bowl game," Helton said.

"This was entirely my decision," Helton said. "And one thing I appreciate about Mr. Haden is he's given me the right to run this football team exactly with the vision that I see, and I really appreciate that as a head coach. This is my decision as we move forward."

College Football Betting: Banged up Baylor looking forward to matchup vs. North Carolina

12.08.2015     06:58 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It's college football bowl season and that means trying to decipher the level of motivation for team relegated to lesser bowl games. A month ago, Baylor was thinking playoffs but after a slew of quarterback injuries and back-to-back losses the Bears find themselves playing prior to New Year's Day. The good news is their opponent, No. 10 North Carolina, has their attention. The bad news is they're down to their third-string quarterback who suffered a concussion in last week's loss to Texas. Baylor is currently a -3 favorite vs. UNC.

“We could go to a bunch of bowl games this year and we’d have a hard time finding many more quality opponents than North Carolina,” Briles said. “That’s the reality of it. They deserve where they’re at. I don’t think motivation is an issue at all.”

“Next Monday we’ll know a lot more,” Briles said. “He’s going to have a bone scan. If it shows where it’s healed, then I

College Football Handicapping: A look back at Season Over/Under Wins

12.07.2015     08:06 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A quick look back at some of college football's biggest under and overachievers from a regular season over/under wins perspective. Original lines courtesy of CG Technology.

Florida
Season Over/Under Wins: 7ov-130
Regular Season Wins: 10
Storyline: A couple of close wins and down seasons by a majority of the SEC East helped the Gators pop for 10 wins. They were only a modest +0.37 yards per play vs. SEC foes.

Georgia Tech
Season Over/Under Wins: 7.5ov-140
Regular Season Wins: 3
Storyline: A shoddy offensive line and decline in skill position talent led to Paul Johnson's worst season in Atlanta. After posting the nation's top third down conversion rate in 2014 (57.9%) the Yellow Jackets plummeted to 108th (34.9%).

Iowa
Season Over/Under Wins: 7.5un-120
Regular Season Wins: 12
Storyline: Buoyed by one of the easiest regular season conference schedules in the country (avoided Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, and Ohio State) and a +12 turnover margin, the Hawkeyes were one win away from making the Playoffs.

College Basketball Betting Free Play: South Alabama Jaguars at Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders

South Alabama at Middle Tennessee State -10.5 O/U 142.5
Recommendation: Under

Middle Tennessee State has always been a defense-first, slow paced team under long time head coach Kermit Davis. And they've struggled offensively this season (0.99 ppp) because they're without their best point guard, Jacob Ivory, who has been sidelined with a concussion. South Alabama likes to get up and down the floor but its numbers are certainly skewed having played two power conference teams (NC State and LSU) and Belmont -- all three have the ability to score big points, especially against an average mid-major team like USA. And that's exactly what they did as the trio averaged 88 ppg. But I put more stock in USA's game at Denver which had only 65 possessions and 125 points. MTSU isn't as deliberate as the Pioneers, but there's a similar amount of defensive acumen. Also note that South Alabama kicked gunner Taishaun Johnson off the team recently. Johnson was a double-digit scorer and the team's top player in terms of possessions used. Last season, Johnson attempted the most free throws on the team and hit 78%. MTSU was able to control the pace in last year's meeting Read more

NFL Betting News: Las Vegas sportsbooks breathe sign of relief after Ravens' MNF win

12.01.2015     06:21 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Funny how these things tend to work out. Heading into last night's Baltimore-Cleveland game, a few Las Vegas sportsbooks were reporting a comical imbalance of money on the Browns. Cleveland opened at a pick 'em offshore and -1.5 in Las Vegas and closed -6. The Ravens of course blocked the potential game winning field goal and took it to the house for outright win. Perhaps a lesson that when someone's reporting 99% of the action is one side, it's probably wise to take a gander at the team that has “no chance.”

"It'll easily be the biggest Monday night decision of the year," Rood said. "It's just a huge, huge decision."

"We have a ton of money on Cleveland," Simbal said Sunday night. "In fact, 99.3 percent of the money is on Cleveland so far."

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Denver Nuggets at Milwaukee Bucks

Denver at Milwaukee -4 O/U 200
Recommendation: Milwaukee

Neither team playing well right now as they each sit at 6-11 and in last place of their respective divisions. Denver has lost six straight and have had numerous injuries to deal with thus far especially to their big men. The Bucks have had some early season injuries as well but currently head coach Jason Kidd is trying to correct their leaky defense. In that regard, Kidd went to a different starting lineup yesterday in Charlotte and the switches did help as Milwaukee allowed just 87 points in the five-point loss. Beyond just replacing starting PG Michael Carter-Williams and PF Jabari Parker in the lineup, the larger picture is the message Kidd is sending to his team about the need to defend better. Off of a season where defense became the Bucks calling card, it has likely been more lack of effort rather than lock down ability and have to believe this group will build off Sunday’s result and step it up on that end. Kidd is still pondering what his best starting lineup will be but his message appears to have been received by the team.

NFL Gambling Preview: Buffalo Bills at Kansas City Chiefs

Buffalo at Kansas City
Sunday, 10 am PT
CRIS Opener:
Kansas City -5.5 O/U 42.5
CRIS Current: Kansas City -6.5 O/U 41.5
Recommendation: Buffalo

The Chiefs' four-game winning streak has been as much about the weakness of their opponents than any other factor.  Since their 1-5 start, KC has beaten the Steelers with Landry Jones making his first career start.  They faced the Lions in London when Detroit was in complete disarray on offense.  They knocked off the Broncos in what might be Peyton Manning’s last career start, a woeful four interception performance from the future Hall of Famer.  And last week, they knocked off a bottom tier, injury riddled Chargers squad in blowout fashion.

I’m not saying that Kansas City is a bad team, not by any stretch of the imagination.  But the Chiefs are a long, long way from being elite, and they’re an overvalued betting commodity at this stage of the campaign following this series of wins and covers.

The Chiefs offense is, most assuredly, a second tier unit.  They rank #22 in the NFL in red zone Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Wisconsin Badgers at Minnesota Golden Gophers

Wisconsin at Minnesota
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - Big Ten Network
CRIS Opener:
Wisconsin -2.5 O/U NL
CRIS Current: Wisconsin -2.5 O/U NL
Recommendation: Minnesota

It's a Big Ten classic rivalry match-up as the Minnesota Golden Gophers take on the Wisconsin Badgers in the battle for Paul Bunyan's Axe. The Gophers beat Illinois 32-26 at home last week and now need just one more victory to become bowl eligible for the fourth consecutive year. It's been a rough one for Minnesota with Jerry Kill forced to retire and countless injuries throughout the season. Quarterback Mitch Leidner said he will play despite injuring his hand and foot against the Illini.

Wisconsin comes into the game 8-3 after dropping a 13-7 decision to Northwestern in their home finale. The Badgers thought they had the game won but the would-be game winning touchdown was overturned. They were eliminated from Big Ten West contention prior to that game. Wisky's claim to fame this season has been its defense with some of the best numbers in the country. The schedule however (71st SOS) comes up light particularly in the Big Ten where Read more
