College Football Betting Preview: USC Trojans at Arizona Wildcats

USC at Arizona
Saturday, 7:30 pm PT - ESPN2
CRIS Opener:
USC -2.5 O/U 63
CRIS Current: USC -2.5 O/U 68
Rob Veno's Power Rating: USC -3
OTTO Sports' Recommendation: Under

The biggest thing I took away from the USC's game against Arizona State was that despite all the preseason talk about playing up-tempo the Trojans are actually looking to slow things down, especially in the second half of games when their defense is gassed due to a lack of depth. They've been suiting up a limited amount of players and the lack of depth was certainly exposed against the Sun Devils.

Defensively, with the exception of the somewhat flukey Boston College game (425 rushing yards allowed) and the two big plays from ASU late in the fourth quarter, USC's defense has been pretty good. They've gotten progressively better against the run holding Oregon State and Arizona State to 89 yards the last two weeks. That bodes Read more

NHL Handicapping: San Jose Sharks headed in wrong direction

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Sell the San Jose Sharks
The San Jose Sharks have been a powerhouse in the Western Conference (at least during the regular season) for the better part of the last decade but much like we’ve seen with the New England Patriots, we’re starting to witness chinks in the armor. San Jose has a lot of “bet against” qualities heading into the campaign: aging core, questionable depth, average goaltending, and questionable team chemistry. Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau were stripped of their respective captaincy titles in the offseason and even though they can still play at a fairly strong level, this decision, even though they won’t admit it, has to sting them a bit. Those two veterans along with Joe Pavelski, Logan Couture, and Tomas Hertl provide plenty of punch in their top six forwards but there is a significant dropoff in my mind from their top six to bottom six forwards.

Depth is not only an issue for the Sharks up front but on defense as well. They have only Scott Hannan, Matt Irwin, and Swiss rookie Mirco Mueller on defence, and only slightly more options up front. Tommy Wingels took a big step forward, speedy Matt Read more

College Football Betting: Wisconsin goes with two quarterbacks vs. Illinois

10.07.2014     07:54 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Despite Melvin Gordon putting up nearly a season's worth of yardage in five games (871 yards, 8.3 ypc) Wisconsin finds itself 3-2 after last week's loss to Northwestern. The lack of production from the quarterback position has been beyond bad as head coach Gary Andersen announced both Tanner McEvoy and Joel Stave would play vs. Illinois. Keep in mind in 2013 Stave threw for 2,500 yards and had a respectable 22-13 TD-INT ratio. This season, in four games against FBS competition, UW's quarterbacks (mostly McEvoy) have completed 45% of their passes with three TDs and seven INTs.

“They could possibly be on the field at the same time. I’m hoping that happens because I think that it opens up a little can of worms for people to wonder what’s going to happen, so we’ll see if that can take place for a couple plays and then we’ll also play them in different situations,” Andersen said. “We’re best served to able to play both those quarterbacks.”

NHL Handicapping: Buffalo Sabres offer value coming off of dismal season

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It’s October and a new NHL season is upon us!  With no work stoppages or Olympic breaks teams should be very focused throughout the course of the season. For today and tomorrow we'll focus our attention on a few teams in the Eastern Conference from a “buy” and “sell” perspective. And in case you missed it here are links to free season o/u points recommendations on the Washington Capitals and Florida Panthers from last week. Enjoy!

Buy the Buffalo Sabres
The Sabres are my biggest value play in the Eastern Conference heading into the season.  There is absolutely no chance they will be worse than last season’s 52-point total and -91 goal differential (both last in the NHL).  It’s easy to say the Sabres will be better based on a new year alone, but they worked hard to overhaul their lineup over the summer.  The books aren’t seeing much room for improvement as they have Buffalo lined at 64.5 points which is lowest in Read more

NHL Handicapping: Dallas Stars are a bet on squad heading into season

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NHL will drop the puck on the 2014-15 season later this week which gives me time to break down a few teams in the Western Conference from a “buy” and “sell” perspective. The conference was a beast last season and I expect it to remain highly competitive with several legitimate Stanley Cup contenders.

Buy the Dallas Stars
Head coach Lindy Ruff did a tremendous job in his first season behind the bench in Big D as the Stars played their best hockey down the stretch and in the playoffs where they gave top seed Anaheim all kinds of fits before falling 4-2. Expect them to continue to build on that success this season. The scoring was led by the incomparable duo of Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin, who each scored at least 34 goals and 79 points last season. Dallas’ biggest shortcoming was it lacked supplemental scoring but GM Jim Nill has done a lot to change that by trading for Jason Spezza and signing Ales Hemsky. Spezza is an injury waiting to happen but if he can stay healthy (a big if), he will add much needed secondary scoring to lend support to Seguin, Benn and Valeri Nichushkin who impressed in his rookie Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NFL has longstanding relationship with gambling

10.06.2014     12:25 PM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Publicly, the NFL is among the staunchest opponents to legalized gambling in the United States.  Heck, the league famously refused an advertisement from the Las Vegas Visitors and Convention Bureau for the Super Bowl, in an effort to appear like they are really anti-gaming.

Former commissioner Paul Tagliabue and current commissioner Roger Goodell were instrumental in getting the anti gaming Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act attached to the Port Security Bill in October 2006.  The NFL has taken this stance despite the fact that it’s enormously popularity is, in no small part, due to the prevalence of betting on games.

The hypocrisy of the NFL in regards to betting is almost laughable.  The facts, as you will see, clearly show that the league was founded by gamblers for gamblers.  From the NFL’s first television appearance in 1939 through the current TV deals that pumps nearly six billions dollars per year into the league coffers, the NFL’s popularity rests upon the shoulders of those who wager on the outcome of the games.

Here in the 21st century, the NFL is the most popular and profitable sport in the Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Kent State Golden Flashes at Northern Illinois Huskies

Kent State at Northern Illinois
Saturday, 2 pm PT
CRIS Opener:
Northern Illinois -21.5 O/U 57.5
CRIS Current: Northern Illinois -24.5 O/U 59
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Northern Illinois -20
Drew Martin's Recommendation: Under

The Northern Illinois Huskies will put their 27-game home win streak (the longest in the nation) on the line Saturday afternoon when they host the Kent State Golden Flashes. None of the players on NIU's 2014 roster have ever lost in Huskie Stadium. Kent State comes into this MAC showdown seeking its first win of the season.

The winningest program in Illinois and in the Mid-American Conference over the last decade, the Huskies have won two Mid-American Conference championships, four straight MAC West titles, and in 2013 made a MAC record sixth-straight bowl appearance. The Huskies' 49 wins since 2010 ranks third among all FBS teams behind Oregon and Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Oklahoma Sooners at TCU Horned Frogs

Oklahoma at TCU
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
Oklahoma -5 O/U 53.5
CRIS Current: OKlahoma -4.5 O/U 57
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Oklahoma -6.5
Paul Stone's Recommendation: TCU

Playing true to preseason projections, the Oklahoma Sooners have performed like legitimate national championship playoff contenders through the season's opening month.

However, like all teams hoping to ultimately land a spot in college football's inaugural version of the Final Four, the Sooners certainly have a handful of circled dates on their schedule. Those games that, at least on paper, pose the type of challenge that could derail the best laid national playoff plans.

One of those potential land mines comes Saturday when fourth-ranked Oklahoma travels to Fort Worth to tangle with the TCU Horned Frogs.

Under first-year co-offensive coordinators Doug Meachem and Sonny Cumbie, TCU, which is Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Iowa State Cyclones at Oklahoma State Cowboys

Iowa State at Oklahoma State
Saturday, 9 am PT - FS1
CRIS Opener:
Oklahoma State -17 O/U 62
CRIS Current: Oklahoma State -17 O/U 65.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Oklahoma State -17
OTTO Sports' Recommendation: Oklahoma State

If you run through Iowa State's scores, it would appear that the Cyclones are on the upswing with a near upset of Kansas State, a win at Iowa, and a spread cover/push vs. Baylor. Statistics, however, tell a different story. The Cyclones were badly outgained in their three losses to the tune of 1578-911 and on the season, ISU is -1.77 ypc and -1.29 ypp. Only against Iowa’s anemic offense was ISU able to play a team "even" from a box score perspective.

I don't downgrade Oklahoma State at all with Daxx Garman under center. He's struggled at times with his accuracy but makes up for it with his big play ability (10.7 ypa). It's a good matchup against Read more
