College Basketball Betting Free Play: Northwestern Wildcats at Illinois Fighting Illini

Northwestern -1.5 at Illinois O/U 135
Recommendation: Northwestern

Second meeting of this in-state battle between Northwestern and Illinois. In the previous contest, two weeks ago in Evanston, the Illini walked out with a 68-61 victory so expect the NU group to be revenge-minded tonight. The Wildcats were minus star guard Scottie Lindsey in the initial matchup but he returned to the starting lineup Saturday and played 24 minutes. With Lindsay back, not only does Northwestern have the leading scorer (15.0 ppg) on the floor tonight but his presence also boosts their defense significantly. Lindsay combined with Vic Law gives NU arguably the best set of wing defenders in the Big Ten which should make life a bit tougher on the Fighting Illini’s perimeter shooting this time around.

Northwestern kept Illinois interior threat Maverick Morgan pretty quiet in the initial meeting holding him to 5-of-12 shooting and only two free throw attempts but the Illini nailed 42% (8-of-21) from three-point land. Have to believe Lindsay’s presence will help quiet the Illinois guards and wing players who accounted for 56 points last Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Washington Wizards at Indiana Pacers

Washington at Indiana +3 O/U 215
Recommendation: Indiana

I haven’t bet against Washington since the calendar turned to 2017.  But this is the spot to fade the Wizards, and the markets seem to be convinced that the Pacers are going to go into the All-Star Break in the midst of a six-game skid.  That gives us ample value to back Indiana as a home dog this evening.

In theory, this is a great spot for Washington.  The Pacers have lost five straight, including a defensive no-show in Cleveland last night; the fifth straight game that Indiana has allowed at least 110 points.  Meanwhile, the Wizards are rested and ready – they’ve only played once since last Friday, a blowout win over OKC that was garbage time by the middle of the third quarter.

But as we clearly saw last night with the Houston-Miami game, an extended rest BEFORE the All-Star Break is not necessarily a good thing – teams lose their focus.  The Rockets were in the exact same spot at the Wizards – coming off a rare, extended rest, having played only one game since last week, a blowout win.  Washington has been as Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Indiana's Crean calls out players

02.15.2017     09:36 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It's a fine line between constructive criticism and throwing your team under the bus. Indiana's Tom Crean appears to have accomplished a little of both following Sunday's home loss to Michigan. The Hoosiers have been hurt by injuries but it doesn't excuse the offense from failing to top 65 points in five of its last six games. IU heads to Minnesota tonight. They are currently +5 underdogs.

“I’ve never coach a team with this lack of maturity when it comes to being able to respond and rebound from when things aren’t going well for them personally. That includes the teams that have won six or eight games.” – Tom Crean, Indiana head coach

“Immaturity in the backcourt. We don’t play both ends of the floor with the same purpose that we have to play [with] when shots are not going down. That has to change” – Tom Crean, Indiana head coach

Penn State at Nebraska -4.5 O/U 141
Recommendation: Nebraska

Teams in this contest are on even footing from an overall talent standpoint but willing to take a stance with the home team Huskers tonight for a pair of reasons. Penn State has risen up the Big Ten power ratings ladder over the last couple of games registering an upset home win over Maryland followed an 83-70 win at Illinois on Saturday. However, their current 3-2 SU/ATS stretch could be more a product of a weak schedule rather than massive improvement. A close look shows four of the five recent Nittany Lions games have been against teams in the Big Ten’s bottom five. Maryland is the only team during this span with a record above .500 in league play. Contrary to that, Nebraska enters off of a difficult five game schedule where they faced four teams above .500 in conference action. Included in those contests are a home win over second place Purdue and a 70-69 OT loss at league kingpin Wisconsin. Tonight they get a very young Penn State team inside a sold out Pinnacle Bank Arena so figure Nebraska to play with extreme energy.

College Basketball Handicapping: If you've been betting on SEC road teams, you're probably rich

02.14.2017     08:53 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
By this point in the season, you are probably aware that the SEC isn't very good. Kentucky, Florida and South Carolina are all solid and sure-fire tournament teams but beyond that, it's pretty messy. And by messy, we mean a lot of mediocre basketball. One interesting stat in the SEC this year is how bad home courts have been. Last season, the SEC ranked second out of 32 leagues with a home straight up winning percentage of 69.8%. This season has been the complete opposite. Heading into tonight's games, home teams have won 43 of 84 games which is barely over 50%. Compared to the rest of the power conference world -- ACC (68.1%), PAC-12 (61.5%), Big XII (61.3%), Big East (59.4%), Big Ten (58.6%) -- that's horrific. And let's not forget the automatic win when Missouri rolls into town. But where it really starts to get noteworthy is the spread records of those road teams. How about 51-32-1 ATS or 61.4%!

SEC SU/ATS Road Record
South Carolina (5-1 SU, 3-2-1 ATS)
Florida (4-1 SU, 4-1 ATS)
Alabama (4-2 SU, 4-2 ATS)
Kentucky (4-2 SU, 2-4 ATS)
Arkansas (4-2 SU, 4-2 ATS)
Vanderbilt (4-3 SU, 5-2 ATS)
Tennessee (3-3 SU, Read more

Trump talks legalized sports betting

02.09.2017     09:14 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
President Donald Trump had this to say about the potential for legalized sports betting. It's a fairly boilerplate response; eerily sane compared to some of the other spew that has come out of his mouth since taking office.

GRAY: “You know quite a bit, as a former casino owner, and you have a particular insight — today an estimated $5 billion will be wagered, $4.8 billion, unregulated and untaxed illegally. What is your position and thoughts on making sports gambling legal nationwide?”

TRUMP: “Well, what I’d do is I’d sit down with the commissioners. I would be talking to them, and we’ll see how they feel about it. Some would not want it, and probably others — and I’ve read others maybe do. But I would certainly want to get their input and get the input from the various leagues, and we’ll see how they feel about it. I’d also get the input from lots of law enforcement officials, because, obviously, that’s a big step.

“So we wouldn’t do it lightly, I can tell you. It

NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Chicago Bulls at Golden State Warriors

Chicago +14 at Golden State O/U 223.5
Recommendation: Chicago

Betting the Warriors off a rare loss was a real moneymaker last year.  That has not been the case here in 2016-17.  Golden State is coming off their eighth loss of the season, at Sacramento last weekend. Following their first seven defeats, the Warriors won their next game by 8, 10, 29, 8, 10, 11 and 10 points.

Note the lack of big blowouts – only once in those seven contests did the Warriors win by enough of a margin to cover tonight’s spread.  And the Warriors 3-4 ATS mark in those contests must come with an asterisk. Two of the three pointspread covers came when Golden State was -9.5 in games they won by exactly ten points.  And with Draymond Green dealing with a bum knee while Zaza Pachulia and David West are both out, this Warriors front court rotation is awfully thin right now.

My clients and I cashed a pair of Big Ticket winners with the Bulls last week, in their blowout win at OKC and their wire-to-wire spread covering loss in OT at Houston.   And there’s every reason to think that the Bulls remain a bet-on Read more

Super Bowl LI Prop Bet Pick: Number of Atlanta Falcons With A Rush Attempt

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Number of Atlanta Falcons With A Rush Attempt: Over 3.5 -135
The Atlanta Falcons had four different players with a rush attempt in each of their two playoff games and I think we will see that trend continue on Sunday. Devonta Freeman, Tevin Coleman and Matt Ryan (who is athletic enough to make plays and scored a rushing TD against Green Bay) are likely candidates to carry the ball at least once and I think there will be a fourth player to get an attempt. Receivers Julio Jones, Mohamed Sanu and Taylor Gabriel are absolutely candidates to carry the ball on an end-around or double reverse type play. And trick plays certainly can't be ruled out of the equation especially with a creative offensive mind like Kyle Shanahan at the controls of the offense. Atlanta has a recent track record of 4+ players carrying the ball and it’s worth riding again on Sunday.

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Akron Zips at Northern Illinois Huskies

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Akron -3.5 at Northern Illinois O/U 140
Recommendation: Over

Northern Illinois has played an ultra-light schedule this season that featured only one power conference team (Minnesota). It's helped the Huskies look very capable on the defensive end as they rank 64th nationally in defensive efficiency and second inside the MAC. Tonight they face without question their toughest offensive opponent as Akron has had its way with the MAC thus far. The Zips have scored 83 or more in five of eight league games including back-to-back 90+ point efforts. It also looks as if Akron's love affair with scoring has hindered its defense. The Zips are a perfect 8-0 in league play but are allowing 1.07 ppp and in a number of those games, they held big leads but allowed the competition to stick around (hence their 4-4 ATS record). From a talent perspective, Akron is probably the most capable team in the MAC defensively. But it's hard to tighten the screws when the ball is routinely going through the basket and you're winning games. Northern Illinois features one of the weakest offenses in the MAC but at home it's reasonable to think they'll net a point per possession. Read more

Super Bowl LI Gambling: Atlanta Falcons saw little to no preseason futures action

01.30.2017     08:57 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
You would think sportsbooks would be exposed if the Atlanta Falcons win Super Bowl LI due to their big odds heading into the season (as high as 100-1). According to one Las Vegas sportsbook, Atlanta was the second-least bet team in terms of Super Bowl futures.

“We’d actually do better on the Falcons (winning) than the Patriots,” Simbal said. “In fact, before the season started, they were the second-least bet team. Only the Titans had less.”

“They’re not a real public team,” Esposito said. “Even after their hot start, there were still a lot of nonbelievers.”
