College Basketball Betting Free Pick: UConn Huskies at SMU Mustangs

UConn +4.5 at SMU O/U 132.5
Recommendation: UConn

Yes, it’s senior night at SMU, with the Mustang trio of Nic Moore and Markus Kennedy and Jordan Tolbert getting their last home game.  With SMU ineligible for postseason play, and a chance to win the regular season conference title on the line, it’s not hard to figure out why the Mustangs are laying points in this matchup.  But laying points against UConn has been a moneylosing strategy all year, and the Huskies are primed to bring their A-game tonight, just as they did when they knocked off SMU in Storrs last month.

UConn is coming off a very disappointing home loss to Houston over the weekend, putting them right back on the Big Dance Bubble – this is a HUGE game for the road underdog.  And boy, UConn is a tough team to lay points against; a squad that has only lost four games by more than five points all season.  the Huskies don’t panic when trailing late and they take the ball to the basket instead of jacking up desperation three’s; exactly what you want from your mid-sized underdogs.

Huskies coach Kevin Ollie was not amused by Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Pick: Texas Tech Red Raiders at West Virginia Mountaineers

Texas Tech +10 at West Virginia O/U 145
Recommendation: Texas Tech

The Red Raiders and the Mountaineers have surpassed preseason expectations with West Virginia (22-7, 11-5) picked to finish sixth and Texas Tech (18-10, 8-8) picked last in the Big XII. The Mountaineers are in second place in the season's final week while the Red Raiders are in seventh but in good position for an NCAA Tournament berth thanks to a strong RPI and strength of schedule. Tonight’s matchup is a rematch and the Mountaineers have taken five straight over the Red Raiders putting them at 8-1 in the all-time series with an 80-76 victory on Jan. 23. Texas Tech was up by four with under a minute left before allowing West Virginia's Tarik Phillip to score the game's final eight points. Jaysean Paige scored 22 and Phillip added 20 as West Virginia shot 51.0 percent. Tonight’s matchup features a hot Texas Tech team coming in 5-1 over its past six games which includes impressive wins over Oklahoma, Baylor, and Iowa State. Head coach Tubby Smith has his team alive for a NCAA tournament bid for the first time since 2007. While Morgantown is a tough venue, teams tend to be Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Florida desperate for defense as it plays host to Kentucky

03.01.2016     08:43 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Florida looked to be in good position to get to the Big Dance but three straight losses have the Gators in danger of not finishing with a winning record in SEC play. UF's defense has been non-existent as it allowed 87 to Vanderbilt and 96 last time out against LSU. First-year head coach Mike White claims that the team has done nothing but play defense in practice leading up to tonight's game against Kentucky.

“We got a little better offensively. But it took away from us being a good defensive team. We haven’t guarded the same way here of late.”

“Yesterday, 100 percent of the practice was defense,” White said. “And today, we’ll spend a lot more time on defense as well. I guess it’s always a balancing act, and we’ve got to get back to defending at a high level to give ourselves a chance.”

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Who Has What It Takes to Win the Big Dance Part I

History shows us many things about what it takes to be a champion.  I write this article every year, and in every year except for two, I have been able to identify the eventual NCAA national champion among my elite level teams.   Both exceptions were the same team – UConn – making miracle runs to win the title as prohibitive longshots.

Two years ago, Kevin Ollie’s Huskies were on the ropes in their tourney opener against St Joe’s, needing a late rally just to send the game to overtime.  Three weeks later, they cut down the nets as national champs at Jerry’s World in Arlington.  I didn’t see it coming.  Neither did the betting markets, with UConn priced in the 100:1 longshot range prior to the tournament.  And if a longshot like that wins every coinflip game in the tourney this year, I’m not likely to get it right either.

I write this article every year before the regular season is over, before the conference tournaments, before the tourney seedings are announced and before a single March Madness game has been played.  Obviously, there is room for a lot to change between now and the Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Pick: Arizona State Sun Devils at Colorado Buffaloes

Arizona State at Colorado -7.5 O/U 144.5
Recommendation: Colorado

In the not so distant future, Bobby Hurley will have Arizona State as a contender in the PAC-12. But it's pretty apparent that he and his current squad have tuned one another out. For starters, with two weeks to go in the season, Andre Spight decided to leave the program. It marked yet another player issue as injuries, suspensions, and now a departure have marred what was once a promising season (10-3 start). As for the play on the court, check out ASU's last three games: Lose by 13 at home to fellow bottom feeder UCLA, get destroyed by rival Arizona, 99-61, and trail Utah by margins of 30-2 and 64-19 en route to a 81-46 loss. The only thing Arizona State has to look forward to is the slim chance of a run in the PAC-12 Tournament. But before they get there, they'll have to play the second of the dreaded "elevation" trip of Salt Lake City to Boulder. They do get an extra day off having not played since Thursday but based on their current form, it won't matter. And we can expect a prime effort from the home side as Colorado (20-9, 9-7) can ill-afford a "bad loss." A Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NBA Eastern Conference second half preview

02.22.2016     09:02 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week in this space, I wrote about what I’m expecting from the Western Conference in the eight week stretch between the end of the All-Star Break and the beginning of the playoffs.  This week, I’m going to focus on the East, before my attention turns to March Madness for the next few Wiseguy Reports.

There’s no question that the Eastern Conference is finally getting better after nearly two decades of playing second fiddle to the West.  Since Michael Jordan (and everybody else) left the Bulls following their sixth title in 1998, the Eastern Conference has only won five championships, something the Lakers and Spurs have each done five times by themselves during that span!  Detroit won in 2004, Miami won in 2006, 2012 and 2013 and Boston won in 2008.

And from all indications in the betting markets, the East isn’t very likely to win a title this year either.  Cleveland is the only team in the East priced at less than 15-1 to reach the Read more

Recent court case leaves sport betting in New Jersey a big underdog

02.19.2016     08:36 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It's exhausting to watch New Jersey continue to fight the good fight with regards to the legalization of sports betting. Court case after court case, it continues to be very apparent that this ain't happening any time soon. And yet the pro-legalization camp remains as confident/delusional as ever. You could have an across-the-board “no freakin’ way” from the U.S. Supreme Court and New Jersey would still say it's all a matter of time.

"It's a squeaker," New Jersey Sen. Raymond Lesniak said after the hearing. "I think we're headed to federal regulation, which is fine."

"As we have reiterated time and time again -- the existing federal law is unconstitutional and arbitrary; it picks winners and losers, while continuing to deny New Jerseyans the right to participate in this billion-dollar industry," Pallone and LoBiondo said in a joint statement released after Wednesday's hearing. "We are hopeful that today's hearing signals the start of a new era in our state, and we

College Basketball Betting Free Pick: Rutgers Scarlet Knights at Illinois Fighting Illini

Rutgers at Illinois
Recommendation: First half Under 68

Rutgers, who has struggled to score for much of the season, will be without the Big Ten's top "usage" player in Corey Sanders (suspended). Sanders leads the Scarlet Knights in virtually every offensive statistical category and netted 39 points in the team's triple OT loss to Illinois two weeks ago. It's not just Sanders' point production that will be missed but also a player who dominates the ball throughout the game. I think a lot of Sanders' production is of the de facto variety but his absence will likely be felt. As for Illinois, injuries have become such a problem that the team is now experimenting with Malcolm Hill at point guard. Hill is Illinois' top offensive weapon and rather than playing him off the ball and working to get him shots, he's being asked to run the offense and score. The move didn't exactly pan out on Saturday as Hill failed to reach double-digits for the first time this season and the Illini were held to a season-low 56 at Northwestern. So why did this total get steamed from 141.5 to 145? Well, you have two of the league's worst defenses involved for starters. Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NBA Western Conference second half preview

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NBA All Star Game is in the rear view mirror now, leaving bettors with a two month window between now and the beginning of the Playoffs.  Just about every team has approximately thirty games remaining on their regular season schedule.  The Warriors remain the favorite to win the title when June rolls around, with Cleveland and San Antonio also priced in a 3:1 or lower range to win the championship.

But if you’ve been reading my Wiseguy Report for the last decade, you know that I’m not a big fan of future book wagers.  This week’s article isn’t going to recommend a change that long term betting philosophy.  In my opinion, the real money to be made betting the NBA is to find the teams that are being priced incorrectly by the betting markets and bet on (or against) those teams repeatedly; in every reasonable situation, until the betting markets catch up.

I’m going to focus on the Western Conference this week; next week I’ll break down the East.  As we come out of the break, I’ve identified my top ‘Bet-On’ team down the stretch for the West – the Denver Nuggets.  This Read more

College Basketball Gambling: Opponents not digging Maryland's balls

02.12.2016     07:56 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
More rumblings about opposing teams not liking the Under Armour balls Maryland plays with at home. Iowa complained about it following its 74-68 loss two weeks ago. In that game, the Hawkeyes shot 5-of-24 from three. Purdue practiced all week with them but ended up hitting only 3-of-25 from deep in a 72-61 loss. Saturday's opponent, Wisconsin, isn't a big fan either and vividly remembers last year's 38% FG, 53-point stinker in College Park. Now it's not as if Maryland doesn't have other factors in its favor like a strong home court and an above average defense. However, if you spend 95% of your time with a leather ball and then switch over to a different material, it do doubt feels weird and can easily throw off your shot. But while it probably is somewhat of an advantage for the Terps, who are undefeated at home, it hasn't resulted in any Read more
