NFL Gambling Preview: Dallas Cowboys at Tennessee Titans

Dallas at Tennessee
Sunday, 10 am PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
Tennessee -3 O/U 47.5
CRIS Current: Tennessee -3 O/U 49.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Tennessee -1.5
Brent Crow's Recommendation: Tennessee

Much has been made of the Dallas Cowboys’ struggling defense and with good reason. They were terrible last year and lost several key players including MLB Sean Lee and DE Demarcus Ware in the offseason as well as CB Orlando Scandrick for the first four games due to a suspension. Last week they took another hit with weakside linebacker Justin Durant going down against San Francisco. He will be replaced by rookie Anthony Hitchens in the lineup this week against the Titans. Durant’s play-calling duties will now be handled by strongside linebacker Bruce Carter.

While the defensive issues are very much a factor for the Cowboys, the offense has come concerns as well. The expectation was that Dallas would be very Read more

UCLA vs. Texas (Arlington)
Saturday, 5 pm PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
UCLA -7 O/U 54
CRIS Current: UCLA -7 O/U 50
Rob Veno's Recommendation: UCLA -2.5
Ian Cameron's Recommendation: UCLA

We will try to provide a third straight college football free play winner this week with the UCLA Bruins laying a touchdown as they face the Texas Longhorns in Arlington. I’m not eager to support either one of these teams at the moment but the Bruins despite their shaky first two performances in closer than expected wins at Virginia and at home against Memphis are still the more talented and certainly the healthier team entering this non-conference clash.

Texas is dealing with plenty of injury concerns particularly on offense and those personnel issues showed in last week’s 41-7 drubbing at the hands of BYU. The Longhorns have already lost QB David Ash and without him, dating back to last season, the Read more

NFL Gambling Preview: Seattle Seahawks at San Diego Chargers

Seattle at San Diego
Sunday, 1 pm PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
Seattle -5 O/U 44.5
CRIS Current: Seattle -6 O/U 44
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Seattle -5
Teddy Covers' Recommendation: Seattle

The recent history of defending Super Bowl Champions has not been a good one.  No team since the New England Patriots following their 2003 Super Bowl title has even won a single playoff game the following season. The last two defending champs – the Giants and Ravens – failed to make the playoffs the year after their title.

But Seattle is a different animal compared to recent Super Bowl champs.  Three things make the Seahawks different.  First, their coaching staff didn’t get raided this past offseason, as they return both coordinators.  The historical norm is that Super Bowl winning teams tend to lose some of their coaching talent in the offseason, but there’s full continuity for the Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Tennessee Volunteers at Oklahoma Sooners

Tennessee at Oklahoma
Saturday, 5 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Oklahoma -20 O/U 54.5
CRIS Current: Oklahoma -20.5 O/U 54.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Oklahoma -17
OTTO Sports' Recommendation: Oklahoma

Not going to be many good opportunities to bet Oklahoma this season with heavy preseason expectations and two blowout wins in Weeks 1 and 2. The Sooners seems to be at their best from a betting perspective after a few losses and disinterest from the betting markets. However, in this weekend's matchup against Tennessee, the Sooners have a lot of sizeable advantages.

In terms of play in the trenches, this is a total mismatch. Tennessee entered the season with one of the youngest offensive lines in the country. It showed against Utah State and Arkansas State has the Vols had difficulty running the football. Against the Aggies, UT managed only 110 yards on 2.82 ypc. Against the Red Wolves, it was Read more

College Footbal Betting Preview: Arkansas Razorbacks at Texas Tech Red Raiders

Arkansas at Texas Tech
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Texas Tech -1 O/U 66
CRIS Current: Texas Tech -2.5 O/U 63.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Texas Tech -4.5
Andrew Lange's Recommendation: See analysis

In Week 1 against Central Arkansas, the Texas Red Raiders committed 15 penalties, threw two interceptions, and fumbled twice (recovered both). First game jitters, right? Wrong. In Week 2, despite out-gaining UTEP by over 100 yards and averaging over 8.0 ypc, TTU need a touchdown with less than three minutes to go to eek out a victory. One of the reasons for the margin not being three touchdowns like the box score indicated was Tech's 10 penalties for 90 yards. Bottom line is all of those "controllable" statistics that killed this team last season (-14 TO margin, 75.2 ypg of penalties) haven't left (-3 TO margin, 102.0 ypg of penalties). When you can't get out of your own way like Read more

College Football Gambling: Injury-riddled Minnesota prompts TCU steam

09.09.2014     01:58 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Big steam play in the college football betting markets with TCU played up from -8 to as high as -14.5 vs. Minnesota. Much of the move was based on Golden Gopher injuries. Starting quarterback Mitch Leidner is questionable to play due to a strained MCL. Redshirt freshman Chris Streveler (1 career pass attempt) is Leidner's backup. They have also lost five players to ACL injuries, including two starters. As a result, the team is expected to play a handful of freshmen vs. TCU. The Horned Frogs are coming in off of a bye week.

“Any time you have a knee [injury], you’re concerned,” coach Jerry Kill said Sunday, while awaiting an update from the medical staff. “We haven’t had a lot of good luck [with recent knee injuries].”

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Minnesota Twins at Cleveland Indians

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Minnesota (May) at Cleveland (Bauer) -170 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Over

The betting markets stop concentrating on baseball as football season begins, offering savvy bettors a prime opportunity to ride some strong Under-the-Radar team trends like this one.  Minnesota has cashed eight straight Overs, 14-3 to the Over in their last 17, exactly the type of trend that nobody is paying attention to in September.   They’ve averaged 6.2 runs per game on offense during this span but their suspect pitching staff has been torched routinely, both the starters and the bullpen.

My clients and I cashed an Over bet the last time Trevor May was on the hill, a game that produced 15 combined runs against the White Sox.  May is an easy hurler to bet against. He has allowed 23 runs in 21.2 innings in five starts since his call-up from Triple-A.  He has recorded a grand total of one out past the fifth inning in those five starts and his advanced metric numbers show Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Under- and over-reacting to early season football results

09.08.2014     07:50 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
I probably heard the same expression 20 times last week: ‘Don’t overreact to Week 1 results.’   It’s one of those handicapping mantras that we hear every year right around this time – the very beginning of football season.

In basketball or baseball there’s no week off between the first two games and the early season betting markets don’t react intensely off a single poor performance.  But for football – both NFL and college – the prevailing conventional wisdom is that Week 1 results are a thing to take with a grain of salt.

The concept certainly makes sense.  Coaches – especially college football coaches – will tell you that they expect their biggest improvement between Week 1 and Week 2.  Without the benefit of preseason games or even scrimmages against opposing squads, teams often ‘work out the kinks’ and ‘get up to game speed’ in their initial contest.  The team you expected to see this year (at least for bettors who do some homework and have opinions coming into the campaign) might not be the team you saw in Week 1, but there’s Read more
