There aren’t many teams in the NFL that have been able to dominate the New England Patriots more than once in recent years. In fact, in the last five years, only two teams have more than one regular season double-digit victory over the Pats – their division rivals in Miami, and the San Diego Chargers, who they face this weekend. The Chargers beat the Pats 41-17 in New England in 2005, and beat them 30-10 in their most recent meeting in 2008.
There’s no question that San Diego is a hungry, desperate team after dropping back-to-back games at Oakland and St Louis over the past two weeks. This is nothing new or different for Norv Turner’s squad – they haven’t been above .500 after six games in any of his four years on the job. But San Diego’s track record following these slow starts has been extremely impressive in the Turner era, with a 23-7 SU record in their final ten regular season

Betting Preview: Michigan State Spartans at Northwestern Wildcats

If ever one could make a case for a “trap” game this would be it. Michigan State hits the highway carrying a load of hype behind them to face perennial bottom feeder Northwestern. The Spartans sit alone atop the Big Ten standings with a perfect 3-0 record. Ohio State just got beat by Wisconsin and the Badgers now travel to Iowa which could set up as an elimination game of sorts. And oh yeah, the Spartans travel to Iowa City next week, their biggest game of the year. Simply put, they control their own destiny and are starting to see a direct path to the conference title.
Getting ahead of themselves, however, may be damning this week. Let us not forget that this pageantry is extremely rare for the MSU program and obviously brand new to the current players. The ACC Coastal Division race is now in high gear as this weekend, the four-team competition faces what is essentially their first elimination game. At 2-1 in the division, neither North Carolina nor Miami can afford to lose this contest. With that in mind and with neither team coming off an emotional win or facing a look-ahead situation, expect maximum focus and effort here.
A cursory look at the fundamental aspects of this game would certainly lean toward an opportunistic UNC pass defense (10 INTs last four games) preying upon the mistake prone reputation of Miami quarterback Jacory Harris. Harris’ completion percentage is way down this season (52% as opposed to 61% and 60% his first two seasons) and if you exclude the Florida A&M game, his number drops to 49.7%. The first BCS rankings came out last Sunday night and the Sooners were ranked No. 1. Oklahoma is coming off its best game of the season last week, a dominating 52-0 win over Iowa State. The offense rolled up nearly 700 yards – running and passing for more than 300 yards each – while the defense collected its first shutout of the year. The closest the Cyclones came to scoring were missed field goals of 45 and 50 yards.
The Tigers are getting it done with defense. They boast the No. 2 scoring defense in the league and last week held a high-scoring Texas A&M team to its lowest point total since the 2008 regular season finale against Texas. Opposing teams have been able to move the ball against Missouri but the Tigers have excelled when needed as opponents have scored on just 53% of their trips inside the red zone (3rd best nationally). Earlier this week I posted a blog about the
strong betting trend Fresno State
shows when off a straight up loss. Simply put, the Bulldogs don't cope well with defeat and enter Saturday off a home loss against Hawaii. New Mexico State is unlikely to threaten Fresno from a straight up perspective, but the Aggies could give Fresno a little bit of a fight. The game line is currently +31 and while getting over four touchdowns against a team notorious for letdowns is juicy, I see slightly more value with the first half line of +17. For starters, New Mexico State has covered the +17 first half in every game but Boise State. Against Kansas, they were down 21-7 at halftime; against UTEP 21-10; San Diego State only 13-7. A couple of intriguing factors for Saturday's SMU vs. Navy matchup that suggest a potentially high scoring affair. Navy has yet to face a pass first offense: Maryland (102nd nationally passing yards per game), Louisiana Tech (64th), Air Force (115th) and Wake Forest (104th). As a result, Navy's pass defense numbers (3rd nationally, 141.4 ypg) seem really good. But in looking at Navy’s last game against Wake,
even sub-par passing units can have success
against the Midshipmen. The Demon Deacons threw for 326 yards and completed 37-of-53 passes. SMU meanwhile ranks 27th with 265.5 ypg.

We cashed an ‘easy’ Conference USA winner last night with Central Florida dominating Marshall 35-14 on the road and in the rain. We’ve had solid success on mid-week plays this college football season while winning and piling up some nice profits in the first half of the CFB season. We’re in action the next two nights in both Big East battles and the money has come in to support the underdog South Florida (+10) tonight. Watch and win on ESPN late night from Morgantown.

Last year, Wisconsin statistically dominated its meeting with Ohio State in Columbus, finishing the game with 22-8 first down and 368-164 yardage edges. But Ohio State had two interception return touchdowns, including an 89 yarder, and a 96-yard kick return touchdown. Ohio State was able to cover the 16-point spread, despite being outplayed for most of the game. Since losing three out of four meetings with the Badgers in ’01, ’02 and ’04, the Buckeyes have now won and covered all three recent meetings against Wisconsin.
Camp Randall Stadium is certainly no easy place for opponents to play on a Saturday night in October. The Badgers are 29-3 SU at home in the Brett Bielema era, winning all four of their previous home games this season. Two under-performing teams matchup at the Metrodome when the Vikings (1-3) host the Cowboys (1-3). The Dallas Cowboys offense is currently no. 1 in the NFC averaging 421 yards per game and 6.2 yards per play. Yet despite outgaining every opponent this season, including three teams by at least 100 yards, the Cowboys and have just one victory and along with the Vikings find themselves in a desperate situation Sunday.
Minnesota’s offense is still trying to find its way after such explosive results a season ago. Brett Favre got his deep threat with the trade of Randy Moss and the two hooked up for a touchdown Monday night in the loss to the Jets. Around this time of year, teams start to emerge as true national title contenders while other fall by the wayside and jockey around for winning seasons and second tier bowls. That certainly looks to be the case with Saturday’s Nebraska vs. Texas matchup. The Cornhuskers have done everything right this season en route to their 5-0 start. The defense is once against phenomenal and the offense, led by quarterback Taylor Martinez, now looks capable of winning games by itself. Texas meanwhile has essentially removed itself from the Big XII title picture – this after two straight years of fighting for a national title shot.
