CFL Betting News and Notes Week 7

08.12.2014     02:50 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Here are my Week 7 CFL News and Notes as we examine each team from a betting perspective.

Toronto Argonauts (2-4 SU, 2-4 ATS)
Toronto comes off its bye week to host Winnipeg and BC this week, playing two home games in a five-day span. It will be interesting to see how the Argos deal with this odd scheduling quirk. They aren’t any healthier at wide receiver but perhaps the extra week to prepare and practice can allow veteran quarterback Ricky Ray to gain some semblance of chemistry and cohesion with his new pass catchers.

Montreal Alouettes (1-5 SU, 1-5 ATS)
Montreal simply can’t compete with any good team in the CFL right now until its gets some sort of traction offensively. The Alouettes lost 33-23 to the Edmonton Eskimos at home last week in a game that could have been much worse but Edmonton clearly took its foot off the gas pedal after a 30-8 halftime lead. Quarterback Troy Smith struggled but he’s not the only one to blame. They can’t run the football, no receivers are getting open downfield, the offensive line isn’t holding up, and their play calling has been atrocious. Montreal Read more

Sportsmemo Handicapper Erin Rynning talks LeBron and NBA Futures for ESPN Insider

07.14.2014     02:09 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Sportsmemo Handicapper Erin Rynning was featured in a recent ESPN Insider article about the state of the NBA betting markets now that LeBron James in headed back to Cleveland. As of late last week, LVH (which is now the Westgate Superbook – more on that in another blog), had the Cavaliers in the 3-1 and 4-1 range to win the title.

NBA Handicapping: Bettors play guessing game with LeBron's destination

07.08.2014     08:36 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
As nauseating as it is to follow the coverage of LeBron James' free agent saga it has had an impact on the betting markets. Anticipating a potential move back to Cleveland a few Las Vegas bettors jumped in on the Cavs to win next year's NBA title. The MGM reportedly took a dime bet that helped drop the line from 40-1 to (geesh) 10-1. A slightly less knee-jerk reaction at LVH with Cleveland's odds now 30-1 after opening 60-1. Note that the MGM was the same sportsbook that at one point had the USMNT at 10-1 to win the World Cup.

"They are our biggest liability right now," said MGM VP of Race and Sports Jay Rood. "We took a dime ($1,000) on them at 40-1."

NBA Gambling: LeBron James' next move impacts sportsbooks and bettors

06.25.2014     01:59 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Following news of LeBron James’ willingness to test the free agent waters, a few sportsbooks were quick to pull down their 2015 NBA future odds.

"When a player like LeBron decides to change teams, it not only affects the status of the Heat, but the entire NBA," said John Avello, the head of the race and sports book at the Wynn. "I have to close everything to evaluate. If he leaves the Eastern Conference, it makes an additional handful of teams a contender."

MLB Handicapping Free Play: Houston Astros at Tampa Bay Rays

Submitted by ER Sports

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Houston (Keuchel) +105 at Tampa Bay (Bedard) O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Houston

The Houston Astros will send southpaw Dallas Keuchel and his 2.63 ERA to the hill this afternoon. There’s nothing fluky about Keuchel’s stellar ERA this season (2.95 xFIP). He also sports a 3.6:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio and an MLB-best 63.7% groundball rate among qualified starters. The major reason for his massive step forward has been the development of a plus slider which has been his go-to strikeout pitch. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay’s Eric Bedard was roughed up in his last start against Baltimore – a common theme and one that can be expected to continue this afternoon.  Bedard obviously doesn’t have the stuff he once possessed with a fastball that barely tops out at 90 mph and a slider with minimal bite. He’s currently showing a 4.33 ERA but that number is really iffy moving forward. Note too that Bedard has been a fly ball pitcher for much of the season and yet Read more

Billy Walters: The sports bettor everyone loves to hate

06.17.2014     02:08 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article on the constant barrage of accusations thrown Billy Walters' way – everything from insider trading to having SEC referees in his back pocket. Interesting that the article quietly mentions that 2013 marked the first time in 39 years Walters failed to turn a profit betting on sports.

Sean Patrick Griffin, author of "Gaming the Game'' - an acclaimed book about the 2007 betting scandal involving NBA referee Tim Donaghy - said a few Las Vegas gamblers are "adamant'' that one or two football referees in the Southeastern Conference help Walters with his college football picks. Brian Tuohy, author of "Larceny Games: Sports Gambling, Game Fixing and the FBI," said via email, "Walters, from my sources, actually has waaay too close of connections to several big time college coaches for all of his bets to be legit. He's getting inside information from these guys without a doubt.''

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: Golden Nugget's College Football Games of the Year

06.16.2014     11:11 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The sportsbetting world here in Las Vegas has shifted into full summer mode over the past week.  The NBA and NHL Finals are now in the rear view mirror with the Spurs and Kings crowned as champions, leaving a modest sportsbetting void even in the midst of the World Cup.

Once the Finals end, my focus shifts towards the upcoming football season, and I’m certainly not alone in that regard.  Last week I wrote about NFL Season Win totals that have begun to proliferate in Las Vegas (still lagging behind offshore, though).  Part 2 of that article will come next week in this space.

This past Friday, we saw another clear sign that football is just around the corner, as the Golden Nugget released their lines on 200 College Football Games of the Year.  These GOY pointspreads were posted on about 10-15 high profile marquee games a week, beginning with the Texas A&M-South Carolina and Boise State-Ole Miss showdowns on Thursday, August 28th, while running through the likes of Oklahoma-Oklahoma State, Kansas State-Baylor and Army-Navy in December.

This is the eighth consecutive year that the Nugget has been the first place in Vegas Read more

NBA Finals Gambling Consensus: Bettors split on their opinion for Game 4

06.12.2014     07:53 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In a rare instance, the betting consensus for Game 4 of the NBA Finals between the Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs is divided. According to the Bookmaker, 51% of bets have been placed on the Spurs +5, 56% are on the OVER, and 50.3% on the Spurs' moneyline. The betting markets seem in agreement with the side with Miami still a 5-point favorite at most offshore sportsbooks. There does appear to be a small push toward the Heat with Pinnacle, Grande, and a number of Las Vegas books at -5.5. Also note that the adjusted series price of San Antonio -235 was bet down to as low as -210 – a seemingly correlated move with the aforementioned Game 4 money on the Heat.
