NBA Handicapper Free Play: Detroit Pistons at Chicago Bulls

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Detroit at Chicago -9 O/U 197
Recommendation: Chicago

I expect a bounce back effort from the Chicago Bulls following a 95-91 defeat to the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday night. There is a game at Cleveland on deck which is a mild concern but I think you will get the requisite focus and intensity from the home favorite tonight especially after getting worked over by the Pistons 107-91 two weeks ago. It’s a game Tom Thibodeau remembers: "You can't let your guard down in this league," coach Tom Thibodeau said after Chicago blew a 19-point lead and was outscored 54-19 in the final 19 minutes of a 107-91 defeat to the Pistons on March 21. The Pistons deserve credit as they have shown a lot of fight despite being all but eliminated from the playoff race as they currently sit five games out of the eighth and final spot. But Wednesday’s 102-78 loss to Charlotte may have been the “tap out” on the season as this squad looks to be a prime “bet against” target. Detroit is also banged up with backup point guard Spencer Dinwiddie, who performed well in the absence of injured Brandon Jennings, listed as doubtful for Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Phoenix Suns at Golden State Warriors

Phoenix at Golden State -12.5 O/U 209
Recommendation: Golden State

The Phoenix Suns fought the good fight for most of the season.  But quite frankly, you can stick a fork into Jeff Hornacek’s squad right now, because they are done.  The injuries are piling up, with center Alex Lin and point guard Brandon Knight both expected to miss tonight’s game.  The losses are piling up as well, with the Suns now trailing current #8 seed OKC by four games in the Western Conference playoff standings; 2.5 games behind New Orleans.

The Suns have shown very little fight in recent losses.  The trend started last week with a home loss to lowly Sacramento; a wire-2-wire defeat.  They followed that up with a home loss to Portland.  Last Sunday, in a true circle the wagons game, Phoenix led OKC by 20 at home but ended up losing the game by double digits, completely outclassed in the fourth quarter.  The following night in Portland was every bit as bad; a game that was over well before the fourth quarter began.

The Suns upcoming schedule is truly brutal.  After tonight’s game they play Utah at Read more

New Orleans -8 at LA Lakers O/U 193
Recommendation: New Orleans

Determination of New Orleans to fight all out for the eighth and final Western Conference playoff spot is in full effect after back-to-back blowout wins over Sacramento and Minnesota. They face a third consecutive lottery bound opponent in the LA Lakers tonight. Hornets start PF Anthony Davis is leading the surge with his play and his words as he’s stated the importance of playing well during this stretch versus lower tier teams. With the Lakers coming back from the east coast after playing five games in seven days with a lineup full of reserves, it’s easy to imagine their tank being empty for this one. This has been a good match-up for New Orleans which is 3-0 straight up against the Lakers this season with the two most recent victories being by 17 and 16 points respectively. Each of those wins came with LAL SG Kobe Bryant in the lineup as well as the team’s #2 and #4 scorers Nick Young and Carlos Boozer. The Hornets Davis averaged 26 ppg in those contests and there’s nobody to guard him here tonight either. Lakers G Jeremy Lin could return to action here and it Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Bettors gear up for Final Four

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The dust has settled from the madness that is March, with only four teams still standing in the NCAA Tournament.  And frankly, since the insanity of that opening Thursday morning when top seeds were falling like flies (Baylor, Iowa State, SMU), this tournament has not seen a bevy of upsets.

In fact, the Vegas favorite advanced in 48 of the last 54 Big Dance games (48-6 SU, not ATS) since midday on the opening day of the tourney.  For only the second time this century, three #1 seeds reached the Final Four.  In this week’s Wiseguy Report I’m going to try to answer the question that everybody is asking: can anybody beat Kentucky; winners of 38 consecutive ballgames since the start of the season.

Since Kentucky is the most hyped team in recent memory, I’ll start with the Wildcats first.  Yes, this team won the title in 2012, going 4-2 ATS in the process during the Big Dance.  Yes, they reached the championship game last year; an undervalued commodity in March as they covered all four pointspreads on the way to the Final Four.

But this year’s Kentucky team has simply gotten too much Read more

First weekend in May promises to be huge for Las Vegas

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
If you're into sports betting and thinking about making a trip to Las Vegas the spring, the first weekend in May looks to be ideal. For starters you have both NBA and NHL playoffs in full swing. Then there's the Kentucky Derby. And to close out the evening one of the biggest fights in history with Mayweather vs. Pacquiao at the MGM Grand.

“Other than Super Bowl Sunday, the single day will be as big as we’ve written in years.  Look for May 2 to be approaching the Super Bowl handle on Super Bowl Sunday, and that’s saying a lot.”

NBA Handicapping: Washington Wizards continue wild ATS streaks

03.26.2015     07:41 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Washington Wizards have officially imploded. Last night's fourth quarter meltdown (outscored 33-25) against the Pacers marked their fourth straight loss. Head coach Randy Wittman was so frustrated he started to walk off the floor before the game even ended. The Wiz are in the playoffs but may miss out on homecourt advantage in the first round as they currently own the fifth seed. But what stands out is the crazy against-the-spread streaks this team has put together over the last two months. Check these out...

January 21-February 5: 0-9 ATS

February 7-February 11: 3-0 ATS

February 20-March 7: 0-9 ATS

March 9-March 18: 4-0 ATS

March 20-March 25: 0-4 ATS

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Philadelphia 76ers at Denver Nuggets

Philadelphia at Denver -11.5 O/U 209.5
Recommendation: Denver

Not a real good situation for Philadelphia who travels to altitude tonight after an all-out effort last night in Sacramento. The 76ers posted 70 first half points but managed only 36 after the break. The 107-106 loss extended their road losing streak to 16 games. Philly’s propensity for offensive droughts will likely be a factor against fast paced and well rested Denver. The Nuggets are also expected to get backup combo guard Randy Foye back after a one-game absence. With the 76ers playing their third road game in four nights, the opposing tempo, depth, and venue will take its toll. Since assistant Melvin Hunt took over the Nuggets as head coach they’ve scored 100+ 10 times and gone 9-3 against the spread. Rather than just playing out the string, the Nuggets have committed to playing hard for 48 minutes and expect the same in this spot. Philly’s -14.6 points per game road scoring margin shows how susceptible they are to being blown out away from home and in Denver’s three opportunities as favorites under Hunt, they’ve won by 19,11, and 28. The latter was Read more

NBA Gambling: Miami Heat now favored to win Meltdown of the Year award

03.25.2015     07:08 AM     Printer Friendly
On the meltdown scale, this one is up there with some of best/worst...depending on what side you bet. With 9:52 left in the fourth quarter, the Miami Heat led the Milwaukee Bucks 81-65 and looked well on their way to a nice road win and cover. But then problems started to occur. From the 9:52 mark until just over a minute to go, the Heat netted six points. This of course allowed the Bucks to climb back into the game. We don't have the vocabulary to describe the ending so let's go to the tape.

Gardner Webb +12 at Colorado O/U 158
Recommendation: Gardner Webb

The 2016 season starts here for Colorado which is going to get its youth involved tonight following star PG and leading scorer Askia Booker’s (17.2 ppg) decision to not play in this tournament due to sore hips. Booker will instead take time to rest and heal in preparation for the NBA Draft. Also missing from tonight’s game will be sophomore backup PF Dustin Thomas (16.7 minutes per game) who has decided to transfer. Each were part of the nine-man rotation that had an offensive surge this month as the Buffs averaged 81 points in their five March games. Without them, the rotation slims down to seven and the PG duties fall in the hands of freshman Dominque Collier who the team has high hopes for but has shot just 35% from the field, 27.1% from 3-point range and 57% from the foul line in 28 games this season. The CBI experiment with the 30 second clock figures to certainly test Colorado as they adjust to a brand new point man running their offense. CU’s dependency on Booker to not only run the show but take shots and score points (took 35.9% of the Buffaloes shots when he Read more
