NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Oklahoma City Thunder at Sacramento Kings

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oklahoma City -8.5 at Sacramento O/U 227.5
Recommendation: Under

It will be interesting to see how Oklahoma City responds after the heartbreaking overtime home loss to Golden State this past Saturday. Up 11 with less than five minutes to go, the Thunder looked tentative down the stretch as Golden State relentlessly charged back to ultimately tie the game. Without Kevin Durant for the final four minutes of overtime (fouled out) OKC couldn’t hang on to a five-point lead. To their credit, the Thunder while disappointed with the result are pointing toward their defense which held the GSW to 103 points in regulation as a positive and the battle cry heading into tonight’s game is to continue playing 48 minutes of that type of defense in each of their final 23 regular season games. Sacramento provides a strong offensive test for the Thunder tonight so expect them to play highly energetic defense here. Helping Oklahoma City in this one could be the absence of Kings starting PG Rajon Rondo who’s thumb injury lists him as very questionable tonight. Also, injuries to starting SF Rudy Gay (shoulder-questionable) and starting C DeMarcus Cousins Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Denver Nuggets at Dallas Mavericks

Denver +5 at Dallas O/U 209
Recommendation: Denver

Very quietly, waaaay underneath the national radar, the Dallas Mavericks have been falling apart for the better part of the last two months.  To call the Mavs poor home favorites is something of an understatement.  The results don’t lie.  Dallas has played 13 home games since the calendar turned to 2016.  They have led at the end of regulation in a grand total of three of those games.

The teams Dallas has been able to beat comfortably at home are not exactly elite.  They’ve beaten the 76ers, Nets and Suns – three of the four worst teams in the NBA (along with the Lakers, of course).  Twice Dallas has escaped with OT wins over non-playoff teams (Sacramento and Minnesota); more ‘lucky’ than ‘good’ even when stepping down in class.

In fact, the Mavs haven’t really been beating any competitive teams on any floor of late.  They are 4-10 SU in their last 14 games, with the wins coming against Philly, Brooklyn, the LA Lakers and Memphis without Marc Gasol in the lineup – not exactly an elite quartet. Read more

NBA Gambling News: Houston Rockets on the brink of implosion

02.26.2016     08:04 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
If you thought the Sacramento Kings were a circus, wait till you read this about the Houston Rockets. Rumors are swirling that James Harden was a key cog in the firing of Kevin McHale and he also wants the team to ditch Dwight Howard. Of course, winning cures all as the Rockets, down 21 at one point, came from behind to win at Portland, 119-105, last night. Harden went off for 46. Despite the disfunction, Houston has covered all three games since the All-Star break and remains a half game ahead of Utah for the 8th seed in the Western Conference.

“It’s really bad for the locker room dynamic,” a person familiar with the situation told CBS Sports. “If everybody knows that James Harden can fire you or trade you, are you going to pass the ball to Dwight or are you going to pass the ball to James Harden?”

NBA Handicapping: Clippers quietly getting it done on defensive end

02.26.2016     07:45 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Good article about the changes made by the Los Angeles Clippers who following a rough start to the season have boasted one of the league's best defensive units. Nearly 58% of their games have gone under the total this season.

In the first 15 games of the season, the Clippers’ defensive rating was 104.0, 23rd in the NBA. In the 42 games since, that number drops all the way to 99.0, the second-best total in the league, trailing only the San Antonio Spurs (96.5).

NBA Handicapping: Denver's Malone peeved about team's lack of defense

02.23.2016     07:21 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Denver head coach Michael Malone hasn't been pleased with his team's defensive effort following the All-Star break as the Nuggets allowed 116 and 121 in losses to Sacramento and Boston, respectively. Denver plays host to the Kings tonight. No line yet due to the questionable status of multiple players.

"Guard your man," Malone said. "Take pride in guarding the ball. Contain the basketball. Anytime I've been around bad defensive teams, it always starts with their inability to guard the basketball. And if the ball lives in your paint, it forces you into rotations that open up the 3-point line. That's two games in a row now that we've given up 10 3s."

"I don't know what happened over break, if guys are still on vacation, but we have come out of the break with no sense of a defensive identity, and that's disappointing. We have to find a way to get that back."

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NBA Eastern Conference second half preview

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week in this space, I wrote about what I’m expecting from the Western Conference in the eight week stretch between the end of the All-Star Break and the beginning of the playoffs.  This week, I’m going to focus on the East, before my attention turns to March Madness for the next few Wiseguy Reports.

There’s no question that the Eastern Conference is finally getting better after nearly two decades of playing second fiddle to the West.  Since Michael Jordan (and everybody else) left the Bulls following their sixth title in 1998, the Eastern Conference has only won five championships, something the Lakers and Spurs have each done five times by themselves during that span!  Detroit won in 2004, Miami won in 2006, 2012 and 2013 and Boston won in 2008.

And from all indications in the betting markets, the East isn’t very likely to win a title this year either.  Cleveland is the only team in the East priced at less than 15-1 to reach the Read more
