NBA Handicapping: Kings continue to not disappoint, abruptly fire George Karl's go-to assistant

02.19.2016     07:41 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It's your world, Sacramento Kings. We're just happy to be along for the ride. Prior to the All-Star break, we broke down what had been an absolutely crazy four-week stretch that involved playoff talk, a 1-8 slide, George Karl getting fired, and then George Karl not getting fire. As if not content to let a week go by without some sort of drama, GM Vlade Divac up and fired offensive assistant Vance Walberg, citing the team needed a shakeup. Karl said he was “disappointed and confused” by the move. Can you imagine what this team is going to be like the last month of the season when they're 15 games below .500 and out of the playoff hunt?

"Obviously (Karl) didn't like it," Divac said, according to The Bee. "But I felt like we had to do something to shake things up."

“Vance is a guy who has been intellectually influential in my thoughts on basketball, probably in my top 10,” Karl said. “He’s that good, he’s that talented, he’s brilliant in a lot of ways ...

NBA Gambling: Golden State Warriors -160 favorites to hit 73 or more wins

02.17.2016     07:49 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Westgate oddsmakers Jeff Sherman tweeted out this NBA prop bet yesterday: Will the Golden State Warriors win 73 or more games? Sherman priced the "yes" at -160 and "no" at +140. The Warriors are currently 48-4 and have 30 games remaining. They'll need to go 25-5 to hit the 73-win mark. Friday's game at Portland starts a six-game road trip for Golden State. Their remaining schedule features six back-to-backs spots and seven games (3 at home, 4 on the road) against the Clippers, Thunder, and Spurs.

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Buffalo Sabes at Ottawa Senators

Buffalo at Ottawa -145 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Over

Two Atlantic Division clubs battle in the Canadian capital as the Ottawa Senators host the Buffalo Sabres tonight. Both clubs have fallen on hard times as of late with the Senators losing six of their last eight contests. The addition of defenseman Dion Phaneuf hasn't helped with their blueline issues as Ottawa's opponents have scored three or more goals in 12 of its last 15 games. Their penalty killing unit is dead last in the NHL having allowed 48 goals thus far in the season, and their 181 goals allowed overall is also a league-worst. Buffalo has lost seven of its last 11 games overall and will be without forward Evander Kane, who is scratched due to oversleeping and missing practice after partying on Sunday after the NBA All-Star Game in Toronto. His benching obviously hurts what has been an inconsistent offense. Ironically enough, the Sabres have been outshot in each of their wins dating all the way back to December 14th. Ottawa has gone over the total in seven of its last 10 games while the Sabres are currently on a 3-1 O/U. Even with Kane out, the defenses for both squads is suspect enough to Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NBA Western Conference second half preview

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NBA All Star Game is in the rear view mirror now, leaving bettors with a two month window between now and the beginning of the Playoffs.  Just about every team has approximately thirty games remaining on their regular season schedule.  The Warriors remain the favorite to win the title when June rolls around, with Cleveland and San Antonio also priced in a 3:1 or lower range to win the championship.

But if you’ve been reading my Wiseguy Report for the last decade, you know that I’m not a big fan of future book wagers.  This week’s article isn’t going to recommend a change that long term betting philosophy.  In my opinion, the real money to be made betting the NBA is to find the teams that are being priced incorrectly by the betting markets and bet on (or against) those teams repeatedly; in every reasonable situation, until the betting markets catch up.

I’m going to focus on the Western Conference this week; next week I’ll break down the East.  As we come out of the break, I’ve identified my top ‘Bet-On’ team down the stretch for the West – the Denver Nuggets.  This Read more

NBA Handicapping: Regular Season Over/Under Wins Update

02.12.2016     07:35 AM     Printer Friendly
Let's take a quick look at the NBA's regular season over/under wins. We projected each team's outcome based on current winning percentage. It looks as if four or five teams except to be right on the number heading into the final week of the season. And kudos to the Portland Trail Blazers who at 27-27 have already matched their preseason number. Heading into the season, Portland was projected to have to league's biggest decline following 2014-15's 51 wins.

NBA Gambling Update: Sacramento Kings are a hilarious nightmare

02.11.2016     08:16 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Let's just recap the last two-plus weeks for the Sacramento Kings. On Jan. 23, they notched their fifth straight win with a dominant 108-97 victory over Indiana. Reaching the postseason, while far from certain, didn't seem all that far fetched at the time. Two nights later, they fell at home in overtime to Charlotte. Tough loss but no biggie. Then the Kings hit the road for a three-game swing which produced three straight non-convering losses. They bounced back at home with a win over Milwaukee but lost to the Bulls two days later.

Losers of five of six, the team was then tasked with a four-game East Coast trip before the All-Star Break. They tanked hard at Brooklyn, trailing 103-85 prior to the fourth quarter in what ended up being a 9-point loss. And then lost to Boston by an identical 128-119 score. Things really started to boil over after they got smoked by Cleveland 120-100. This is when news surfaced that players allegedly didn't show up for shootaround and George Karl was on his way out. Karl was somehow given a vote of Read more

NBA Gambling News: Sacramento Kings back to being Sacramento Kings

02.09.2016     10:48 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Just when you thought the "dumpster fire" jokes about the Sacramento Kings were getting stale, a 1-8 slide helped spawn rumors of players not showing up for shootaround and George Karl getting fired (they've apparently decided to keep him around?!?!). The Kings are now five games out of the 8th seed in the Western Conference and travel to Philadelphia on Wednesday for their last game before the break.

"Energy and effort is a huge part of the game, but I'm not going to keep blaming it on that," Cousins said. "We've got a bigger issue, and we need to figure it out as a team.

"I'd rather keep [problems] in house, but we definitely have a bigger issue than just energy and effort. That can't be the excuse every night. ... We're going to work it out as a team, and hopefully we can fix this."

NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Miami Heat at Charlotte Hornets

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Miami at Charlotte -3.5 O/U 192.5
Recommendation: Charlotte

To call this a flat spot for Miami is something of an understatement.  No team in the NBA has faced a more brutal scheduling stretch this season than what the Heat have just gone through.  Since their four game homestand ended with a win over New Orleans on Christmas Day, the Heat have played 22 games.  21 of those games involved a court change from the previous contest.  This will be their 14th road game in their last 16 contests overall.

The Heat have been riddled with key injuries throughout this stretch.  Four of their five starters have missed at least one game over the last month; and backcourt mates Dwayne Wade and Goran Dragic have both been dealing with a barrage of injury related concerns.  An ancient, creaking Amare Stoudamire sat on the end of the bench for the first two months of the season.  Over the past two weeks, he’s played at least 17 minutes in eight straight games, forced into action because Eric Spoelstra has very limited frontcourt depth these days.

This is the last game of the extended – seemingly Read more
