NFL Handicapper Betting Preview: New York Jets at Buffalo Bills

NY Jets at Buffalo
Sunday, 10 am PT - CBS
CRIS Opener: Buffalo -6 O/U 43
CRIS Current: Buffalo -7.5 O/U 40
Recommendation: New York

The very first question I ask myself when I’m looking at an NFL pointspread is this: Does the favorite deserve to be favored in this price range? And my answer to that question when it comes to the Buffalo Bills in Week 1 is a resounding "no way!"

For this pointspread to be categorized as reasonable, two things must be true. First, the Jets legitimately must be one of the very worst teams in NFL history. And secondly, the Bills have to be capable of beating an opponent by more than a touchdown. I’m not convinced that either is the case.

Make no mistake about it – the Jets are currently being priced like the worst team in NFL history. Last year’s 1-15 Browns were power rated by the markets higher than this year’s Jets squad. The 0-16 Lions from 2008 – the only winless team in the modern era – were -3.5 point road favorites at Atlanta on opening day. I’ve lived in Vegas Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Appalachian State Mountaineers at Georgia Bulldogs

Appalachian State at Georgia
Saturday, 3:15 pm PT
CRIS Opener: Georgia -13.5 O/U 47
CRIS Current: Georgia -14.5 O/U 45.5
Recommendation: Georgia

A lot of respect being thrown Appalachian State's way with Saturday's pointspread a full touchdown less than last year's Week 1 game at Tennessee. Of course, the Mountaineers nearly pulled the upset as the Vols were lucky to get away with a 20-13 overtime win.

While I don't necessarily have Appalachian State on my list of "bet against" teams to start the season, Georgia certainly qualifies as "bet on." The Bulldogs return starting quarterback Jacob Eason who is primed to be one of the better signal callers in the SEC. Aiding in that progression is a plethora of skill position talent. Last season, Georgia averaged a modest 24.5 ppg. I project them to increase their scoring average by 4-5 points.

But more important is UGA's defense which has a chance to be an elite-level unit with as many as 10 returning starters including their entire defensive line. And the opportunity is there for them to put the clamps on Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Troy Trojans at Boise State Broncos

Troy at Boise State
Saturday, 12:45 pm PT
CRIS Opener: Boise State -12.5 O/U 57
CRIS Current: Boise State -10.5 O/U 63.5
Recommendation: Boise State

You likely don't think of the concept "buy low" when it comes to the Boise State Broncos; a team that despite not playing in a power conference has enamored bettors for years. And who can forget the old standby of betting Boise on the "Smurf Turf" no matter what the pointspread? Those days are seemingly over as the Broncos haven't covered a home game in their last eight tries dating back to 2015. And projections for this year are as low as they have been in over a decade as Boise is lined at only 8 wins; the same as MWC up-and-comer Colorado State. But despite last year's "disappointing" 10-win output and even more alarming 3-10 ATS record, their ability to dominate a majority of their opponents should remain. Keep in mind, playing in the far tougher MWC Mountain Division last year, Boise still outgained teams by over 1.5 ypp. Their biggest issue was an outlier -9 turnover margin; +9, +7, +3, +20, and +8 the previous five Read more

College Football Betting News: Florida suspends seven for season opener vs. Michigan

08.14.2017     07:05 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
One of the disadvantages of playing an actual game in Week 1 and not some patsy from the Sun Belt is that there's always a chance for some good old fashion offseason suspensions. Florida announced that it will be without the services of seven players including the team's top offensive weapon, wide receiver, Antonio Callaway. Frustrating situation for summer bettors as there was a lot of pro-Gator money. Michigan opened -5 and was bet down to -2.5 before sportsbooks took the game off the board.

"We have a small group of players that have made some choices that are extremely disappointing," head coach Jim McElwain said in a statement, though he did not elaborate on the reason for their suspension. "Action has been taken they have missed some practice and will miss the Michigan game. We will use this as a learning opportunity and we will have some players step up as we move forward."

NFL Preseason Gambling: Arizona Cardinals change play callers for second straight game

08.11.2017     07:58 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
The Arizona Cardinals will hand over play calling duties to quarterbacks coach Byron Leftwich for Sunday's game vs. Oakland. In their 20-18 Hall of Fame game loss to the Cowboys, the Cardinals scored 15 points in the first quarter and finished with 327 total yards. Offensive coordinator Harold Goodwin called plays in that contest. Arizona has taken a slew of money this week; +1 to now -3 at both offshore and Las Vegas sportsbooks.

“Byron doesn’t have a ton of, or much, history calling plays but just his knowledge of the offense, his knowledge of being the guy that is hearing it through his headset is going to serve him and give him some experience.”

College Football Handicapping: Coastal Carolina to make FBS debut

07.31.2017     12:35 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
There's a new kid on the block in college football with Coastal Carolina making is FBS debut after playing its inaugural season in FCS in 2003. The Chanticleers averaged nearly 11 wins over the past four seasons. Below is where they ranked nationally according to Sagarin. Unfortunately, Coastal will be without head coach Joe Moglia this year as it was announced he will take a medical leave of absence. Coastal, who will participate in the Sun Belt, opens the season at home vs. UMass. The last FBS opponents they faced was South Carolina, a game in which the Gamecocks won 70-10 back in 2013.

Year - Coastal Carolina Sagarin Ranking (notable teams ranked ahead of)
2016 - 101st (ahead of Arizona, Virginia, Illinois)
2015 - 118th (ahead of UNLV, Fresno State, SMU)
2014 - 68th (ahead of Navy, Houston, North Carolina, Texas Tech)
2013 - 96th (head of UNLV, Rutgers, Kentucky, Virginia)

NFL Gambling News: League reaches settlement with Las Vegas charity event

06.21.2017     07:41 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
The NFL has a long history of getting pissy any time its name get associated with a casino. Back in 2015, a kids charity event was put together with various players in attendance. The venue happen to be the bowling alley at Las Vegas' Sunset Station. The NFL nixed it but the charity wasn't about to be bullied and turned right around and sued the league. It looks as if the NFL waved the white flag as it recently reached a settlement with the charity.

“There's only one person that can tell us what's the difference between the non-approved venue and the approved venue (Goodell),” Pettit told a federal magistrate judge last month. “And he's this Oz behind the curtain, this person that the NFL will not allow us to talk to. And everyone points their finger at him, saying he's the only one that can make that determination.”

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Philadelphia Phillies at Atlanta Braves

Philadelphia (Lively) at Atlanta (Dickey) -120 O/U 9.5
Recommendation: Over

When FanGraphs published Philadelphia's "Top 33" prospects prior to the season, Ben Lively was listed under "other prospects of note." Lively has had some success at the Minor League level but the consensus is that he'll have trouble against MLB hitters. In his debut, he allowed only 1 run over 7 innings against San Francisco. He didn't fan a single batter however and had only five swinging strikes. All signs point towards Lively's ceiling being that of a lower-tier NL starter. RA Dickey's long career lookings to be coming to an end. Despite the switch back to the National League, Dickey's K rate is down over 2 per 9 innings (4.41) while his walk rate is a career-worst 4.68. And those numbers get even worse when you look at recent outings (L4 starts, 22.2 IP, 31 hits, 16 BBs, 10 Ks, 6.75 ERA). The Braves won six of his 11 starts but needed to score 4, 7, 9, 7, 6, and 6 runs to do so. And both bullpens grade out as below average, especially Philadelphia's that chose to use a position player in last night's 14-1 loss. The MLB betting markets have undergone a Read more
